Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Europa League – Thursday

Arsenal rely on a wonder goal from Olivier Giroud as Jack Wilshere shines, while Everton’s toils continue – this time on the European stage – as pressure mounts on Ronald Koeman.

Here’s the notes from Thursday’s two contests.

Giroud and Wilshere stake their claim

Arsenal earned a late 1-0 victory in Serbia to top Group H in the Europa League with three wins from three.

The Gunners stood up to the intimidating atmosphere of Red Star Belgrade’s Marakana stadium, stunning the home crowd with an outstanding late winning goal.

Theo Walcott’s nodded pass was flicked acrobatically into the corner by Giroud, after incisive play from Wilshere opened up the home defence.

Wenger had set his side up with a three-man backline that included Mathieu Debuchy and Mohamed Elneny, while youngsters Reiss Nelson, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Joe Willock were given opportunities to impress.

But it was Wilshere who stood out, as the driving force behind Arsenal’s attacks time and again.

The performance led to the inevitable clamour for Wilshere to get a first Premier League start of the season, with Wenger indicating post-match that this was now close.

“He will get a chance in the Premier League, don’t worry about that. I think at the moment it’s going like that. He got a big kick in the first half on his ankle but he managed to get through the 90 minutes and games of that intensity will, of course, help him a lot.”

But the Fantasy implications appear minor.

Wilshere is a 5.4 asset in Fantasy Premier League who has rarely threatened to supply goals and assists. However, Wilshere’s rise could impact on Mesut Ozil, who continues to remain on the periphery and currently is just not a factor in our season.

As for Giroud, his performance in Thursday’s contest was eye-catching only for his goal. He failed to convince throughout.

Nonetheless, he made the vital and spectacular intervention, and he will go on eating into Alexandre Lacazette’s minutes, reducing his compatriot’s Fantasy stock in the process.

Everton’s struggles continue

Everton’s chances of making Europa League progress suffered a further blow after the home defeat to Lyon.

The Toffees have now made the worst start to a Europa League group stage by an English club.

Ashley Williams had given the Merseysider’s hope on the night, having clawed them back into the contest, heading home a pinpoint free-kick from Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Koeman shuffled his pack with Arsenal’s visit to Goodison Park looming on Sunday.

Kevin Mirallas was a notable inclusion on the left flank – he gained his first start in more than two months. Elsewhere, both Phil Jagielka and Wayne Rooney were omitted from the squad, perhaps hinting at starting roles on Sunday.

But Morgan Schneiderlin may be an early doubt for the Gunners visit; he was forced off on 57 minutes with a knock.

Sigurdsson’s omission from the starting line-up, with the pace of Mirallas and Nikola Vlasic preferred, was perhaps interesting and demonstrated that Ronald Koeman is desperately attempting to stumble upon a solution in attacking areas.

But that makes the task of trying to identify some Fantasy potential in this Everton squad all the more difficult.

Koeman’s line-up seems unpredictable from back to front and, while the fixtures remain in their favour following Sunday’s clash, there appears little incentive for us to take a risk on an Everton asset given the current levels of form and confidence.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm still not convinced Pep will be too keen to throw Kun to a couple of centre halves who will be sticking their elbows in his ribs at every opportunity

Sterling. More confident of his minutes than Jesus, and more explosive than Silva. Only other real option this week is Kane, and he's not getting trusted with the armband again until he scores in the PL at Wembley.

If I had Lukaku he'd be the obvious dullard choice...but I don't and I don't want him for the next two....

...so that leaves a City asset or Kane.

        Problems for both.

City assets have a slight rotation risk but more importantly any could be hooked at between 45 and 60 minutes. For a captain I want 70-80 at least.

Liverpool's defence is far better against better sides historically and they have a good record against Spurs. Often Klopp's and Pochetinno's styles end up cancelling each other out - which is why their encounters have been low scoring and why Spurs haven't scored more than a goal against them since Klopp took charge.

So that leaves possibly a new recruit in for Kane. Morata may still come in but Chelsea's form looks dicey and Watford's away form is actually very good.

So currently a reluctant flip of a three sided coin with the armband on one of Sterling, Silva or Jesus or Kane out for Morata (c).

Or if I wanted to disregard all long term planning just do Kane to Lukaku (c)...and sleep more easily in GWK 9, while ignoring GWK 10-11's fixture list.

Or could this be the fixture Kane rips up current 'home' form and history and scores well against Liverpool?

Not sure on lukaku or morata. Man U not creating a lot right now and morata looked well off the pace on Wednesday night...gw14 is time for morata or hazard.

Lukaku scores against weaker sides . He's a very predictable reverse troll in that regard. Huddersfield will not be able to deal with him. I have no doubt about that.

But his fixtures are awful again until GWK 12....and we know he is poor against better sides.

As we re both out of a WC using a transfer now is extremely annoying but the landscape is changing too quickly and not being able to adapt fast enough will cause a fall in OR imo

City asset minutes I don't see as a problem tbh, Andy has/had that same concern with Jesus but he seems to get his points in the first hour anyway. Can't see the score being 0-0 after 60 minutes, but say by some miracle it was, can't see Pep hooking people tbf.

I'm feeling a little crazy these days when it comes to Fantasy. This season has thrown us so many curveballs already that a dullard captain choice this week will almost certainly end in failure me thinks.

So the obvious choice of Lukaku or Kane is off the table for me. I want Aguero in and captain him, but I will wait for the press conferences to try and decipher something out of that first.

Also on my short list for potential captaincy options are:

Morata - Chelsea are a bit off at the moment while Watford are flying. So it would be typical for this to turn into a 4-0 for Chelsea.

Salah - Involved in everything for Liverpool. And Tottenham showed a lot of strength against Real Madrid midweek, meaning they will probably cock this game up completely and lose...

KDB - Best player in the league by a mile right now. hogs the Baps, will highly likely supply one or two asists and possibly pop up with a beautiful long range effort.

        Sneaky punt:

An Arsenal attacker. WHy? Because Everton are a shambles at the moment and Williams will probably get a red this weekend!

Sterling, because there aren't any stand-out options.

I think Aguero will hinder Jesus somewhat and Kane can't be trusted at Wembley.

This week's post (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/16738688) points me towards Chelsea and Man City assets. My only choices in that regard are Alonso, Silva or Sterling so gone with Raheem.
Man City in great form, scoring goals for fun and they have the "easiest" fixture of the week as you can see, Burnley clean sheet odds (the lowest I've ever seen) at 4%...

Tough one I've Jesus Kane Lukaku at the moment. Captained Jesus and hoping he doesn't come off too early. Concerned Lukaku could troll me!

Sterling. Form and fixtures. The smart move would be to start him here and rest him midweek. But with Pep no one knows. Not even Pep knows.

Lukaku hasn't scored in a while and away from home he rarely scores more than one goal. in fact, that would be an interesting stat. My guess is it's 1 in 20 away games where he actually does get more than one goal.

Aguero / Jesus too risky. Chelsea poor league form. Kane poor at "home" and Liverpool have a good record for them.

Sterling is the clear captain for me.

If I had Lukaku he would be my captain. Can't decide between Jesus and Kane.

Actually thinking of going maverick and captaining Lacazette at Everton. Merseyside blue are in trouble and Arsenal need to bounce back after losing against Watford.

Hazard at Stamford Bridge on the back of an excellent showing against Watford. There aren't many better options in my view. Thinking of taking the risk for now.

Between Sterling and Lukaku for me. Sterling and Man City in great form, and I'm worried that Jesus will be rested. They will beat Burnley, but I think only 2-0 or so - Burnley will just carry on defending even if they go behind early on. Lukaku and United are not in great form, but have an excellent fixture.

This GW surely has thrown down the biggest conundrum/dilemma in picking the most profitable (C)

        Jesus
        Aguero
        Sterling
        Lukaku
        Kane
        Morata

I'm pretty sure most managers have at least 2 of the above players
Each have their plus points for the captains arm band

Personally I have it on Jesus with Lukaku vice ....
This is such a crucial decision which can reward us all with a mighty green arrow or create a miserable GW9

All I can say is good luck with your choices 🙂

Hazard for me. He is fit and sharp and played very well on Wednesday. Conte has admitted that he got the tactics wrong so we will probably see the 3-4-3 back and that suits Hazard too. I am a little cautious about Chelsea's form and Hazard may be a risk because of that. But he is a risk with a very high upside potential.

If I didn't go with Hazard it would be Kane. I think he will do well against Liverpool who will be the first PL team to visit Wembley this season and set out to attack. I think it's a very good fixture for Kane anyway and wouldn't dream of removing him.

@ Jonty - I was at the game on Wednesday and Morata didn't look 100% fit to me. They just about got him back but he hasn't trained much and didn't play well. 90 minutes will have helped him but I think your feeling that it may be a little early for him is right.

If anyone wanted a differential punt this week I'd take a look at Pedro. He made a huge difference on Wednesday when he came on and I'd be very surprised if he didn't start on Saturday.

Lastly, a bit of pretty meaningless trivia. Chelsea's last 6 home games (all competitions) against Watford:

        Chelsea 4-0 Watford (1/2004)
        Chelsea 4-0 Watford (11/2006)
        Chelsea 5-0 Watford (1/2010)
        Chelsea 3-0 Watford (1/2015)
        Chelsea 2-2 Watford (12/2015)
        Chelsea 4-3 Watford (5/2017)

Lots of Chelsea goals there. 🙄

Thanks for your insight regarding Chelsea and Hazard Ruth, its comforting to hear as a Hazard owner!

The only query I would have of your post is Liverpool. I think they are certainly capable of attacking, but I am seeing a little more restraint from them this season. They aren't pressing quite as much as they did last year (possibly a by product of more fixtures), and in their last fixture Klopp resisted the urge to overcommitt to trying to win the game, which was grudgingly respected by Mourinho in his post match press conference. Links below.

          https://statsbomb.com/2017/10/what-has-happened-to-the-klopp-press/
          https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2017/oct/15/jurgen-klopp-tactics-liverpool-manchester-united

We could see a similar low scoring scenario play out at the weekend, possibly aided by the effect of Wembley, and by the fact Klopp and Pochetino tend to cancel each other out, as referenced by Jonty above. An early goal for either side will probably open up the game somewhat, however.

These are my reasons for placing Kane somewhat far down my list of potential captaincy candidates this weekend.

I came to that same conclusion...also Klopp historically is really good at keeping spurs at bay...it seems he is Pochetinno's kryptonite. The Argentine just can't get the better of him - at home, away, cup or league.

That's useful, thanks. But I do think the floodgates will open for Sir Harry at Wembley sooner rather than later. Maybe Palace in GW11 will be the one. He'll certainly be my captain then.

No worries 🙂 I agree, I think once they have Rose back the balance of the side will be better at Wembley. They've already got the hoodoo off their back of not winning there in the league, the feeling of it being home may slowly start to come, which can only help Kane of course.

Can't argue with you on GW11! There aren't any other clear Captaincy options that week either. I think in a way, despite not owning Kane, I wouldn't mind him scoring a goal on Sunday. It would give me the confidence to bring him in and captain him for GW11.

Kane. He has had the armband every week since GW1, and will retain it until he is injured... A deliberate preseason approach, as my picks have usually failed in the past. That said this strategy is being tested this week! (So tempted by Hazard)

Just a few observations on Burnley.

        - Burnley haven't conceded more than 1 goal since GW1 (2-3 win at Chelsea).
        - Despite this defensive record, they rank 17th for shots conceded in the box; only 4 behind Crystal Palace who have the worst record.
        - Surprisingly, Burnley rank 20th for chances conceded centrally.

So, while Heaton and Pope have been performing wonderfully, the signs look good for Silva and De Bruyne to have success threading the eye of the needle.

Nemesis has Aguero on the bench (Captained Kane and has Lukaku) from GW8

Pretty certain he has forgotten the GW9 deadline BUT 100% sure he wanted to captain Aguero GW9

Kind of depends if any hints from the presser but tactically should I give him heads up on the deadline...want to gain the most out of this situation, as he is 100% believing Aguero will play and may not even take heed of any indications in the presser

Basically I think Aguero is a trap for this GW9 and if Nemesis inadvertently forgets to transfer him in then he is actually doing himself a favour

Look forward to the lunchtime presser, pls keep us posted

Would you make a move here or save the FT?
Kolasinac may need to go (I'd prob go a good bit cheaper if selling).

      Elliot.
      Kolasinac, Yoshida, Jones.
      Choupo-Moting, Sterling, Eriksen, Atsu.
      Kane, Lukaku (c), Vardy (vc).
      Fabianski, Carroll, Mbemba, Mee.

      Thoughts on this lot?

      Forster
      Walker, Cedric, Trippier, Davies, Maguire
      Sane, Hazard,
      Kane, Morata(c), Vardy
      Bench: Elliot, Carroll, Surman, Carrick

      Areas for concern:
      1) Davies, Trippier double up
      2) Sane rotation

Would you consider -4 to fix either 1) or 2)?

      Daniels + Sterling
