Scout Notes – Kane Falters in Dismal Double

Double Gameweek 22 finally brings to a close a frenetic period of Fantasy action, but it’s an unhappy end for those who go big on Spurs striker Harry Kane.

Picking through the bones of Spurs’ 1-1 draw with West Ham last night makes for depressing reading for most, if not quite all, FPL managers.

Chief draw of the double Gameweek was Kane, who went into it with back-to-back hat-tricks and came out the other side with three measly points from 112 anti-climactic minutes.

Illness hit the striker over Christmas, but that didn’t dissuade close to 428,000 managers making him the second most popular buy of Gameweek 22.

More than 24% then captained him and 121,000+ played their Triple Captain chip – leading figures for both – only for Kane’s inconsistent Wembley form to bite one and all.

His eight goals in 11 home appearances looks strong, but he’s actually failed to find the net in seven of those matches.

When he scores at Wembley, he generally scores big. But not last night – despite having seven shots, five of which came in the area, against the Hammers.

All is not lost for his 43.5% ownership as Spurs entertain Everton and then travel to Southampton next.

Those match-ups have persuaded more than 100,000 managers to bring him in already, making him the second most purchased player ahead of Gameweek 23 even though the FA Cup third round has to be endured before that.

A spiteful three-match run (MUN liv ARS) then follows at the end of January, which will most likely require a re-evaluation of the various Spurs assets brought in to capitalise on Gameweek 22’s double fixtures.

Kane might well survive that purge, but the chips blown and transfer hits taken to bring him in this week have hurt many now, and could have knock-on effects.

Son shines bright on the night

Across the two teams with double fixtures, no player scored more points than Spurs midfielder Son Heung-min.

His equalising goal against West Ham earned him two bonus for nine points on the night and 12 for the Gameweek.

Andy Carroll, with a brace in Tuesday’s 2-1 win over West Brom, was the only other double Gameweek player to score so many points, but his 0.6% ownership meant the effect of all that was negligible.

Not so Son, who was Gameweek 22’s most bought player, with 498,000 transfers-in.

That took him to 12.6% ownership, and his ever-growing army of managers have certainly reaped the benefits of some excellent home form.

Son has now scored in six of his last seven matches at Wembley and is also enjoying a consistent run in the team, starting in nine of the last ten fixtures.

While the availability of Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama gives Mauricio Pochettino the option of shifting to a 3-4-2-1, potentially putting Son’s start at risk, the idea of Spurs lining up without the in-form South Korean seems remote.

Son (8.1) is up to 99 points for the season, which puts him just outside the top ten scoring midfielders and only three points shy of team-mate Dele Alli, who is 0.9 more expensive.

The England international blanked last night, as did Christian Eriksen, but both are in strong enough form – the Dane has produced returns in six of his last eight matches, Alli has two goals and four assists in four – for managers to hold onto them for the next two attractive fixtures at least.

At the back, Spurs have kept back-to-back clean sheets just twice all season, and West Ham’s one shot on target put paid to their chances of that happening again on Thursday.

Those upcoming Everton and Southampton fixtures look like an excellent opportunity to make it third time lucky, but Spurs’ defenders remain relatively expensive for the returns they’re delivering.

The cheapest among them, Kieran Trippier (5.3), is also the most vulnerable to rotation, and so it proved last night as the ex-Burnley man was rewarded for his nine-point showing in Tuesday’s win at Swansea City with a place on the bench against the Hammers as Serge Aurier once again took his place.

Their most owned defender, Ben Davies (13.4%), started consecutive matches for the first time since Gameweek 16, thanks to an injury to Danny Rose.

Fantasy managers will be hoping that situation continues for the next two Gameweeks, if not much further forward than that.

Injury terminates Arnie’s hopes

Spurs players dominated the transfer market for Gameweek 22, with Marko Arnautovic the only West Ham fly in that particular ointment.

The midfielder was third for transfers-in (368,000+) on the back of a consistent spell of form under David Moyes during which he’d scored five times in as many matches.

Arnautovic kept things ticking over with an assist in the win over West Brom, only for a hamstring niggle to rule him out of last night’s match and scupper the double Gameweek plans of 8.8% of FPL managers.

But unless the issue is a serious one, his form and West Ham’s fixtures (hud BOU CRY bha WAT), make the Austrian one to keep for now.

Pre-match, his manager had this to say:

“Marko has got an injury as well. He’s been really important to us, but he’s not fit to play tonight.”

The fact that Carroll was unable to cope with the quick turnaround in matches suggests that the target man’s minutes could be managed by Moyes, with Arnautovic again used as the central striker over at least some of those favourable fixtures. Carroll has played four successive matches just once this season – between Gameweeks 4-7.

Another midfielder who enjoyed a surge in ownership this week was Manuel Lanzini.

Some 68,000+ managers bought into him, more than doubling his ownership, and he produced an assist for Pedro Obiang’s spectacular opener last night.

The Argentine now has five assists from his last six starts and is another well-placed to capitalise on the Hammers’ forthcoming fixtures.

At the back, Angelo Ogbonna and Arthur Masuaku both enjoyed decent Gameweek 22 investment, but produced only four and three points respectively.

It was left to goalkeeper Adrian to bring in slightly better returns, his seven saves at Spurs helping him to six points from the two matches.

He now has three clean sheets and seven save points from his eight appearances since replacing Joe Hart.

At 4.3, he remains a very viable rotation partner for Burnley’s Nick Pope, particularly when the Clarets host both Manchester clubs across Gameweeks 24 and 26.

    WC Jan or DGW?

WildCards are getting triggered all over the shop. Requests for advice are dutifully met by the experienced managers stock response: DON'T, wait for the big DGW. And in many cases it's good advice; Inexperienced managers are asking about making 3, 4, 5 sideways changes, and it’s good advice is to hold the WC and use FT’s or hits. Personally, some years I wait and some years I blast the WC straight out in January. But it does also seem to be received wisdom that a big DGW is optimum for a WC? It’s an interesting one, because unlike at the start of the season where an early WC is based on very little existing data, at this stage in the season we know much more and the WC’s potential to make reliable changes is much greater.
    Here’s a few thoughts about qualitative pros/cons

    WC: Early

    Pros
    • Set out your squad for an extended run of good fixtures
    • Set out your squad according to good player form
    • Capitalise on some price hikes
    • Avoid some price drops
    • Adjust your team according to the prevailing optimum formation
    • Hire and fire in accordance with the transfer window activity

    Cons
    • Strict, careful planning necessary if you plan to take advantage of DGWs
    • Can't be a responsive to short notice fixture changes
    • Valuable FT's in the lead up to DGW
    • Probably Lower DGW score/satisfaction

    WC: DGW

    Pros:
    • very difficult to quantify this but when played along with a BB chip the WC might earn you approximately 150% give or take 20%
    • Can be very responsive to short notice fixture changes

    Cons:
    • You're left with a team of players selected optimally for the previous week, not the remainder of the season
    • Potential advantage conceded to early WCers re squad ajdustment to form, fixtures, injuries, transfers etc

I don't find this at all black or white. An early WC'er can still put out 5-10 or more DGW’ers by disciplined, careful planning and existing DGW players. They can potentially half the advantage gained from a WC. And as we've seen time and time again, DGW WC'ers sacrifice form players and suffer in the weeks that follow, sometimes even during the DGW itself.
There’s three conclusions I arrive at from thinking it through

    1. It’s almost impossible to predict the value of an early (January) wildcard. It’s not even easy to work it out in retrospect

    2. The APPEARANCE of gains from a DGW is guaranteed because you know your DGW score will be higher than the average SGW. It’s simple and can be pointed to as evidence of success. But it’s not simple at all and it’s not evidence of it as a successful strategy

    3. I believe FOMO (fear of missing out) is responsible for the experienced manager’s tendency to not explore other options. It’s really tough to see everyone score 95 when you got 60. Conversely, it’s probably FOMO responsible for it being played early by the inexperienced manager

Does anyone have any anecdotes that support any of this. Anyone ever recorded the effects of a
January WC and attempted to assign a value to a WC. Is it even vaguely possible?

(full disclosure, I WC’d early this year to restructure to a 4-5-1 DDgea (Elliot), Jones, Ota, Azpi, Alonso (4.5), Salah, Sterling, Rcharlison, Mahrez, Lingard, Kane (Ayew, A, Quaner). I typically finish between 20,000 and 100,000.

Think the free-hit chip may make an earlier wc more appealing.
I did well from gw36 wc last year, but still played it too late through stubbornness.

Nice comparison. It will always be hard to compare and it depends a lot on the team you're WC-ing. Last season (my first) i listened to the folks here and did it before DGW. 120 points. Probably gained 40 points with it, week after maybe a few more still. This season I WC already, gained 31 points. Decision was made because my old team could hardly field 11 (turned out 11 with KDB) and now i have 14 starters+Pereira as 2nd gk. As you said: To make 3,4,5 sideways moves don't. Otherwise it can be the way to go for your team.

Maximising the window of time you get a boost from the wildcard is certainly crucial. Someone floundering around GW28 could make up a lot more if they wildcarded then instead of saving for the DGW.

Very nice post, have an upvote.
I see the reason you restructured!

There's a third option, which is to wildcard about 3-4 weeks out from the DGWs (i.e. if everyone wildcards in 33 for BB 34, you go in GW30-31) and plan your way forward.

A lot of the time, I tend to find that individual needs (as you saw with your team) and team value are the two big things which dictate your decision making:
o Needs wise, if you're down in the millions and need the boost to get to respectability then it makes sense; you can also catch some price rises, though I think it's a misconception that we'll see catapulted rises over the course of a gameweek - a 0.2 rise is for the odd couple of players, a 0.3 only in extraordinary circumstances
o Team value wise, if you want a team for the DGW but can only afford it in GW30 at 0.0 (I'm mostly talking about premium players that cost, say, 8.0 now but will go to 8.5 due to a nice DGW on the horizon), you should probably pull the wildcard early and make a plan to get to the team you'll want for the double. It requires a little cognitive effort (which many who play FPL lack, let's be fair) but it's highly doable - I got from the doldrums to 21k through this strategy last year, tho tbf the year before I used the wildcard at 33 for 34 BB and ended up 2k.

        Anyway, great post.

good point, it could easily be the case that the team you fancy in wk 30 is at least 0.8 more expensive come wk33.

For sure - I put a team together when the DGW participants become known and keep track of it. If it gets to a point where key men need to be bought or I can't afford anymore, I just go for it.

And so it begins. I'm a proponent of do it when you need it - lots will need it within the next few, some will be lucky enough to hold until DGW usage. I don't think either will mandatorily get you more points.

I myself think I'll be doing it around the end of the transfer window - a couple of weeks earlier or after, depends if my team gets worse or not. If Couts stays I'll probably hold for a while.

Great post. Nice to see some different thinking. Is it worth pointing out that if you improve your score even by just 20 points over what you would have got pre-WC then you could, with you 2 FT, make 7 transfers immediately before a DGW and still break even. The assumption would be that you'd make much more than 20 points as well I guess?

I'm pondering it, going to leave it this week to gather more information but week after I'm sorely tempted.

What holds me back more than the DGW is having blown my free hit chip, and the uncertainty around the likely blank gameweeks. May need to WC then instead and then plan transfers moving towards the end of season DGW - did that last year over conventional wisdom and it worked great.

Lots of potential benefits to the early wildcard. I wouldn't do it now though, after GW25 or GW26 would be the earliest I'd consider because:

        * We will know which teams blank in GW28
        * We will have a lot clearer idea who is likely to blank in GW31
        * There's a chance we might know of any early DGW surprises (Man City and Stoke DGW27 last season springs to mind)
        * Transfer window will be shut and squads fixed for the remainder of the season
        * 3 GW's more info over right now

Of course if you've got 8 players or something injured/dropped/suspended right now then definately wildcard, but other than that extreme example, I'd be very tempted to hold off for now.

        nice analysis

by way of an example I will give you this from last season when my main rival in a mini league used his WC in January to restructure his team for the next couple of months - he continuously ignored DGW players and blanks as the fixtures when on - instead maximising his 11 each week (odd hit here and there)

he outscored me by over 100 points in the run up to the doubles and then took a 24 point hit whilst I proudly played my wildcard

he ended up winning by around 50 points all told, despite a late surge from me

despite this, I will still be advising people to save it to later as it's so powerful - but I used it wk 32/33 last year (can't remember exactly) where as this time I'm thinking of doing it straight into 36/37 to minimise the disruption after it

I don't understand this, you just gave an example of this strategy not working for you but then still advising it? Obviously it's not that powerful as you just said he gained 100 (-24) on you.

It all depends what state your team is in and how prepared you are.

I think he got a bit lucky (I didn't want to write an essay) - he stuck with some players who I thought would tail off with difficult fixtures and they didn't.

I think a balance is always needed. I always preach that the best times for chips is what is likely to maximise returns for your own team, not others - so there should be no hard and fast rules.

For example, don't take someone out with two average fixtures "just because it's a double" over someone with a very good fixture. I think a lot of people have learnt that with West Ham this week. Owning their defenders over say, a Chelsea one, was ultimately very silly.

Again I don't understand the last comparison. The only Chelsea defender to return was Alonso? If you had Cresswell over one of the others you gained 6 points! Ogbonna at 4.4 is not comparable to Alonso at 6.9. If you did do that it depends on what you did with the 2.5m.

It is difficult to believe that the reason for your rival's victory was that he played his wildcard early and that you played yours late.

I think it is more likely to be because his strategy of ignoring DGW players and blanks worked out better than yours of taking too much notice of them.

Also, this season should be different, since we now have a Free Hit chip to deal with the biggest blank game-week.

The rest of the season could be as follows:

        21 - Blank
        22 - Double
        28 - Blank
        31 - Blank
        34 - Double
        35 - Blank
        37 - Double

If you have your free hit you could wildcard prior to 28 to set yourself up for ten weeks once all FA cup ties are known/likely and use the free hit in the week you will have the least players. Should also help in terms of value and planning transfers.

Then if you still have BB or TC use them when it looks like the best week - 34/37

This is my eight season ... I virtually always play my first WC for GW2 and the second one early too
This year's a bit different as I have just used the FH and ideally shouldn't be using my WC now

However its a long time until GW23 and if I use any more hits I might have to WC this week
I wouldn't use the WC unless it was to avoid something like -24 or more of hits - think a lot of people over-state the cost of hits and end up using the WC when a little bit of cost could cure a lot of their issues

For the big DGW, I tend to use my TC chip ... at that late time off year I really want maximum value for my 11 players and it seems unwise to have excess spending on the bench ... need to be a lot nearer to the time to make the final call

Personally I like to plan for a DGW, bringing in players prior to the game week and a hit usually the week of the DGW. I then wildcard the week after- it allows me to benefit of the short term punts leading up then a good restructuring going forward.

Hey, great post! I really think its team depended.

I almost got the same team as you without using WC 11/15 players and planning to take out some DGW players to others.
I also play 4-5-1 and wonder what to do with Aguero after the LFC match.

Its either ignore him get another city mid, change him with Kane or change formation to 4-4-2 with Aguero, Kane and a cheap mid.

What are your thoughts about that? I'm actually leaning towards transfering Kane out from 24-27 and then get him back for Aguero. I really want to keep my formation because I just finally got it around 2-3 weeks ago.

Hi, guys, I just wanted to ask if i should use my WC now. I am starting to lose the first spot in my mini league. I have one FT and 1.3 ITB. Kabasele to Jones and probably Arnautovic/Richarlison to Lingard will be my transfers if I dont use the WC.

        My team:
        Fabianski - Begovic
        Otamendi - Christensen - Ogbonna - Kabasele - Kenny
        Arnautovic - Salah - Richarlison - Eriksen - Sterling
        Kane - DCL - Firmino

        Suggestions?

It's always good to see this kind of post, thought out and questioning perceived wisdom.

I'd say the WC is still best for a DGW because you don't know who you'll need for that week.

Right now, most good players will already have the key ones like Alonso/Otamendi, Sterling, Salah, Kane and other good options like Firmino, Son and Arnautovic.

A WC now would have to be taking all these players out to be worth it. Going for big differentials, but this is far too much of a risk for me and doesn't fit the 'playing safe' style.

A hit or two with FTs over a few gameweeks should be able to get you your team. A WC is so much more powerful.

If it weren't for the horrible injury record, I'd be okay with this. Fingers crossed Chelsea's doctors can continue working wonders. It's a bit costly, but if the club wants to pay it...

Carroll can head well and is actually a decent finisher - it's the fitness that's the problem.

As a Morata owner I am a little wary as I think this means Morata could be hooked earlier-on. Conte doesn't rate Bats and therefore hasn't done that as often.

I think this "TC fail, my season is over" stuff on here is a bit overblown.

If you think about it, the TC chip is not actually "worth" a huge amount of points. You're probably going to use it on a "premium player" in a DGW. Let's say (best case scenario) you get to use it on Salah (no guarantee you will I'll be able to) in a DGW - his PPA is 8 so you're expecting 16 points more than people just captainining him over a DGW - and that's ignoring the increased chance of a rest or reduced minutes given two games in close proximity or the chance he gets injured or suspended in the first game, so let's discount that to, say, 15.

Kane got a miserly 3 points so you're, on average, an "expected" 12 points down against someone who uses it on Salah - and that's if Salah is even an option - remember people ended up using it on Andy Fecking Carroll a couple of years ago!

Not the end of the world!

I'm saving it for Fraser Forster on the last day of the season. Saints needing a point to stay up and he pulls a worldie saving 2 penalties and 14 saves for a cool 23 points -> 69 =D

Yeah for sure - it's always a gamble, it's very much about the individual player, the TC, and luck/contextual factors conspiring in your favour.

Schadenfreude is firing a lot amongst non-TCers, which I don't like (I didn't TC but the shoe could easily have been on the other foot), and the self-pity is understandable but I wouldn't call it season-defining.

Remember: a few years ago we all waited and some mad people ended up TCing Andy Carroll

But even in your case, you picked up 27 points on him through the TC. The rest was just you playing the game well. 27 points between now and seasons end is nothing. Plenty of game left for those who TC'd Kane.

Correct. Even if you use the chip well and get 25pts x 3, thats only a gain of about 1% of your entire FPL points total come the end of the season. The chips are useful of course, but its the bread and butter of FPL management throughout the course of the season that is responsible for approx 97% of your score.

add to that there are 121000 others in same position, many of them will be serious players. So you wont lose any ground to them and even in Andy's worst case scenario above everyone wont put it on that player.

Still a real chance many people will still TC Kane in later DGW.
Really aren't many options for players capable of producing large hauls with guaranteed starts.
City will have won the league early and if still in Europe expect key player rotation.
Needs a big change in performance to look at Chelsea or Utd.

I used TC on Caroll 2 season day ago and still finished at 714 OR, so agree not the end of the world, it’s a potential spike for one week, like most of the chips but beating the average most weeks is a better goal.
Personally I think the first wildcard is most important chip-the timing and the players you bring in and getting those choices right are a big ‘steer’ in having a good season week in week out.

Agreed, I think the first WC is the most important. I've had 10 green arrows in a row since using my first WC: it enabled me to get Salah and Otamendi, 2 key players I wouldn't have been able to get otherwise.

The fact that he is English helps Chelsea deal with the homegrown UEFA rule.

On top of a maximum 25 players for the List A, clubs had to designate a minimum 8 players that were trained by clubs from the same national league, with 4 of them are from the club own youth system.

Chelsea just need some English bench fodder to help them comply with the rules.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on their frontline moving forward. Judging by comments on here, injuries and form over the Xmas period it seems to be narrowed down to Kane, Kun, Firmino and/or a cheap FW.

What are people looking to do?

          A) 3 heavy hitters....e.g. Kane Kun Firmino
          B) 2 heavy hitters and cheap FW.....e.g Kane Kun DCL
          C) 1 heavy, 1 mid-price, 1 cheap FW....e.g. Kane/Kun, Firmino, DCL
          D) Something else

Feel like I don't know what formation to go now and have 3 Spurs assets to deal with and unsure the best path forward. Thoughts?

i have kane + firmino+ quaner, don't see the point in a cheap playing forward as will always prefer to play spare defender or mid if needed

if cash was no issue i'd consider kun, but prefer those funds in the midfield atm

Up to Gw14 I was playing 2 heavy hitters (kane / Morata) and the likes of Niasse.

I sold Morata for Murray and went 451 / 541 bolstering midfield and defence with the spare funds.

My rank has gone from 1.6m to 300k. Coincidence ? maybe

Considering chelsea double up in DEF alonso and christiensen thoughts? Very good fixtures.

Also who which DGW players are people removing? Don't think spurs will batter everton so want to get rid of either son or ali soon.

Will be on Haz, Salah, Sterling, Lingard, Arnie next week

I don't like an expensive double up as so easy for random conceded goals and Chelsea haven't exactly been amazing defensively in recent weeks.

tbh I'm not that hurt on the TC chip.

I spent 8, and though that ended up only justified by 5pts, its still paid for.

Have moved from 550,000 > top 40k in 5 GWs

Never ever ever done that well over xmas.

I've gone from 1.2m to 350k over 5 GWs here - popped from 1.2m to 400k in 3, then have treaded water a bit the last two.

I haven't. Their defensive form has dropped off a bit as of late although he is on my watchlist. Also, I can do a straight swap to Bavies whereas with Jones, I'd need to find 0.2m. The only player I would debate using the cash on is Aguero from Morata and he hasn't done that well either last 2-3 games. Really stuck for forwards this year.

              Very tough.
Do you have literally nothing else you can do, with 2FT and a "use it or lose it" situation?
              If yes, do it!
If not, I'd suggest dealing with other fires first. An Azpi to Morata goal bound to happen sooner or later, just depends on the latter re-learning where the goal is!

Tough one. I own Alonso and have done since the start of the season. He does score (that brace in GW2 was amazing) but even if he does score, he doesn't get as many BPS as you would expect for a defender scoring as he is playing basically as an attacking midfielder so doesn't get interceptions etc. but on the weeks he does score and gets a CS, the points are amazing. He has singlehandedly saved my GW on numerous occasions, especially when Kane hasn't been firing. He is also on free kicks.

On the other hand, Azpilicueta doesn't get many goals but does occasionally get involved with an assist and also is a BPS magnet so could provide more consistent returns. The guy that eventually kicked me out of the cup had both.

I don't think you can go wrong with either. Can you utilise the 0.2m somewhere else? If not, personally I would go with Alonso unless they bring in cover for him (Sandro, for example). He is the leading points scorer for defenders in the game for a reason and is only just behind Kane and is ahead of Aguero (although Aguero has been rotated a lot) as well as being ahead of all but 4-5 midfielders.

Would you do Eriksen or Son to Pogba?
