The Community Round Up

The Fantasy Premier League launch is looming, as the Fantasy Football Scout community eagerly look back at previous seasons to deduce the likely launch date. Ahead of the big day, our community writers and posters have cast an eye over the potential heavy-hitters, budget options and rotation strategies for the next campaign.

We look back at their efforts, whilst dropping in on our resident Sky Sports Fantasy game expert, who has been offering his tips for success following the launch this time last week. Not surprisingly, we also round off the community’s World Cup reactions and congratulate the winners across the various community competitions based on the tournament.

The Community Submissions

Earlier in the week, we asked for your votes for the best community article during the month of June. There was plenty of excellent articles to choose from but we’re delighted to announce that Portsmouth Bubblejet’s detailed look at Premier League Home and Away rotation stood out and claimed our community article of the month prize of a £20 Amazon gift voucher. Well done to the Pompey printer hybrid.

To be in with a chance of winning July’s prize, you can submit your article for consideration here. The Sarjeant’s detailed look at how players coming up with promoted sides are set to perform under the Fantasy Premier League’s Bonus Point System is already an early contender..

The Boose13 was another community writer active this week, he’s looked ahead to the new Premier League campaign, with this assessment of Tottenham’s prospects. It includes some pretty forthright opinions on Spurs’ transfer activity prior to the last campaign.

Meanwhile, Balotelli’s Bib and Innsie continued to focus on the final matches of the World Cup and a big thanks must go out to them for their efforts over the course of the tournament.

Balotelli’s Bib rounded off his lessons learnt series, before steering us through the final two matches with a look back at the semi-finals.

Elsewhere, Innsie’s helped out Fox managers with his guide to the available players for the semi-finals and beyond.

The Hottest Topics

With the World Cup giving way to another domestic season, the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) start date was already dominating our thoughts. According to The Sarjeant’s look at previous FPL launch dates, he reckoned that we’re a just a days away from getting stuck in. Daniel was another to predict an imminent launch, having also studied previous season’s dates.

The raft of newcomers to the Premier League are already tempting some, even before the FPL player list is revealed. Archie, however, urged caution when picking new faces, reminding the community of Wigan’s misfiring Italian hopeful Mauro Boselli, a notorious name around the community, who promised so much and delivered so little.

There’s no such pessimism surrounding Arsenal’s new stellar recruit, Alexis Sanchez. In Heydudes13’s discussion on where the Chilean forward will fit into the London side’s lineup, the consensus is he will shine as either a central striker or a winger. We’re now just waiting on that all important price tag.

Our options up front are, of course, plentiful, as explored in our discussion on the potentially pricey FPL prospects. With fixtures in his favour, Robin van Persie will be in big demand from the off, while Luis Suarez’s departure has made Daniel Sturridge an obvious early target. There are sceptics amongst you, however, with Baines on Toast stating that Van Persie may have lost his mojo and may not be the points machine of old. Fitness concerns worry him in this hot topic where he also reveals that Wayne Rooney could be an overlooked gem.

Whilst big money will doubtless be spent in our forward lines, Christina was mulling over potential FPL third striker options, with Hull’s Nikica Jelavic among those in the sights.

Among the burning questions we’ll all be pondering when FPL launches is whether to opt for one pricey keeper or go for a pair of rotating shot stoppers. Lionel’s Messy Boxers explored some of the best rotations available, with Burnley’s keeper and his counterpart at either Hull or Crystal Palace, emerging as one of the favoured options.

No discussion about the FPL would be complete without dreaming up some potential rule changes. This week EdenoftheEast wondered whether it was time to consider a mid-season re-classification to tweak players who have emerged as being out of position. Those interested in drafting in Tottenham’s full-back Danny Rose, who spent last season classified as a midfielder, will certainly be among those hoping such a rule change is considered. For Carrick Deserves More Mata, more points for slick midfield passers tops his list of rule tinkering.

The final FPL related hot topic in our round-up takes a look back at the past, as Innsie asked the community to recount their track record in the game, including highest rank, years played, as well as aspirations for next season.

There’s been a slightly shorter wait for those playing the Sky Sports Fantasy game, which has already launched. At first glance the pricing looks tough but luckily our resident expert D1sable set up his advice surgery earlier this week to help us search out some bargains, allowing us to focus on acquiring the heavy hitters.

Finally, last weekend saw some of the Fantasy Football Scout team attend our annual get-together in London. For those who want to see what the likes of Applebonkers, Evs and FPL winner Tom Fenley look like during a night out in London there’s a link here.

The Community Tournaments

The Fantasy Football Scout community dominated the final leader board of the Fox game, with 17 of our league members in the top 50 overall rankings.  The winner of our league was Alba Esque, who finished  seventh overall. Meanwhile, Arvin Velu topped the Fox FFS Deadzone league and Spencer won the FFS moderators and contributors league.

Frip69 not only topped the Scout League in the McDonald’s backed Official World Cup game: he also finished first in the overall ranks. Congratulations on an excellent effort.

The winners of the  FFS UEFA World Cup team competition, which is using the Official FIFA Fantasy game, were Nigeria. Full details can be found here.

Ozil could florish this season when interacting with speedsters like sanchez and wallcott, it became too static for him last season. I am expecting a fair price for him aswell, though I am initially planning with ramsey and/or sanchez

I don't understand how you can pick Ozil given his consistently poor displays for club/country over the past few months. He might begin the season well again if he's refreshed after summer break but it is unlikely that he will be able to reverse such poor form so quickly.
      So Silva.

Ozil had a decent World Cup I thought. He seemed to be returning to some sort of form until he got injured again too. WIth more attacking options at Arsenal's disposal, he can be used more sparingly and thus, effectively unlike last season where he was clearly burnt out.

I disagree. He was pretty average for me and I think he could do with a long break. Didn't help that he was playing on the wing though. Top quality player when on form.

I actually thought he did well for Germany, barring that very badly missed chance. He's never been a fireworks type of player, rather he is just the utter best at quietly going about his job to perfection. He's not about half volleys from 30 yards or blistering pace, but doing things simply and right.
I won't deny he's got more to come to earn his price tag, for sure, but I don't think he's going to suddenly bag braces every other week.

This. Silva rested, Ozil logged a lot of minutes and never looked better than pedestrian. Schweinsteiger taking a few pounds of his flesh when Ozil missed the goal is a vivid memory and I think he will underperform at Arsenal without a similar disciplinarian on the field. Mert tried it last year but didnt have the same effect.

Possibly. Could be a million or so out. Would need a £4m goalie and depends on Sanchez price. Thinking of similar team with double Man U goalie/defense, cheap rotating defenders, Snoddy, Haz and Tadic over Nasri plus Arnie and non-playing last mid. Contemplating Jello over Crouch and Studge rather than Sanchez.

Just a tip: watch out for Bacuna this year. He offered good value (points per £) last season (was about 30th overall for value) but he started 75% of his games at full-back (despite being down as a midfielder). If he's down as a defender, he's a bargain. He'll be on penalties with Benteke out, and with no Albrighton, he'll be on more freekicks (+he's on all direct freekicks anyway).

It's about 50/50 whether he'll be a defender or a midfielder, but I'd say he's Villa's first choice RB right now.

        A bit mental.

Start with sto, NEW, HUL, but then...

liv, ARS, che, MCI, eve 😆

But because Bacuna will take a lot of freekicks, penalties, and play a lot in midfield, he's not a bad option to have in these games.

All relying on being a defender, of course.

The only option otherwise at the back for Villa will be Okore. But that's a whole new post.

Vidal - "I'm not thinking of where I'm going to go, I want to take advantage of my holidays with the people I love. Right now I'm thinking of other things. Afterwards, when I arrive in Italy, I'll see. I'm already at a great team, Juventus, so I will be just as calm if the Manchester United option falls through."

So there is a Man Utd option 😉 Not all media BS after all.

Though his signing would be great, I personally think he's slightly overrated. We can manage with a cheaper alternative or dare I say with no alternative at all.

Not replacing him at all? Not impossible, really. Playing with three CM's and having a surplus of them still, you could just put Marchisio to starting lineup and promote youngster to bench, and it also is a completely feasible plan to build around Pogba, and you should do it too. But I wonder how many games Pirlo still has in him. If he doesn't have that many, you are practically losing two main players from same part of field, and that's bad when you try to compete in CL too.

But that is an option - a back three with Vlaar (and Okore) in isn't all that bad. We had the best record against the top 4 out of all non-top 4 sides last season, so we are capable. And this was with both Baker AND Clark playing. 😆

Vidal deal looking ever closer, agent apparently pushing for a move and Vidal himself has admitted that he 'would love to play for one of the world's biggest clubs'. £35million reported fee, will be tied up when Vidal returns from his holiday most probably.

Great news with Di Maria- he's apparently rejected PSG. Although we lead the race for him the whole deal is hinging on whether or not we can convince him to go without CL football for the 2014/15 season.

I still think we will be lining up with both Vidal and Di Maria in our side at some point next season, although it depends if Van Gaal and Woodward are willing to pursue both once we sign one of them.

United have spent £96m on 3 centre midfielders in the past 12 months - all 3 of whom mainly attacking in nature
Another £30m+ on Vidal just doesn't make sense at this point

Those midfielders are probably worth about 45m combined now though.

Herrera is a posh water carrier / box-to-box - looks really good
Mata plays in the opposition half

Fellaini is a write off but not the rest of the midfield

In addition, the centra half partnership that the great team of 2007-2013 was based on have just left the club together and neither have been replaced.

        Centre half is top priority

vidal was a centre back for chile only about 3 years ago, played centre back for juventus a few times too. you'd never do that as a mainly attacking mid. he is about as complete as any midfielder i've EVER seen

Can anyone remember what the template team was the last pre-season? or there abouts?

I remember there being one or two good bandwagons but some really poor ones aswell like Lukaku who played every pre-season game so apparently was sure to start according to alot of people here (look at how that turned out) & of course Mirallas, neither worked out well at all.

I recall Zaha was in alot of people's teams aswell cos he played alot of pre-season games for utd. That being said I think I'll pay little attention to pre-season friendlies this time, they don't really mean anything if last season was anything to go by.

    Oh & Anelka crikey

What about good ones? the only one I can remember was Coleman but he was an obvious choice if you remembered his fantasy form before his injury.

No, a cheap punt until Spurs buy a decent striker. I'm expecting to mostly play a 4-4-2 with the GKs, last 2 defenders and last 2 midfielders rotating.
