Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Aaron Creswell

Having racked up two goals and 14 assists for Ipswich in 2013/14, Aaron Cresswell’s raiding displays persuaded former West Ham boss Sam Allardyce to splash the cash last summer. Immediately nailing down a starting berth, the left-back was one of only four outfield players to feature from start to finish in every one of his side’s league fixtures in the previous campaign.

Cresswell’s displays saw him named as the Hammer of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year in his debut top-tier campaign and his performances were noteworthy enough to attract reported interest from Premier League big boys Manchester City and Chelsea.

Having opted to sign a new five-year deal at West Ham over the last couple of weeks, Cresswell will be keen to push on under new boss Slaven Bilic this time around as the Hammers prepare for their final season at Upton Park…

Key Factors

    • Cresswell’s haul of attacking returns last term (two goal and four assists) was more than respectable yet didn’t quite do justice to his impressive underlying statistics. Comparing his goal threat to fellow defenders, only Branislav Ivanovic (11) fashioned more attempts on target than the Hammers full-back over the course of the previous campaign. Furthermore, Cresswell sat joint top – alongside Seamus Coleman – with regards to shot accuracy (47.4%) among those defenders that fired off at least ten attempts. Turning our attention towards his creative influence, Cresswell served up 34 chances for his team-mates, which was just two shy of Ivanovic’s total and only bettered by three other defenders.

    • Having tallied 129 points last time out, Cresswell has retained his 5.5 starting price. Only three teams (Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United) accrued fewer clean sheets than the Irons (nine) in the previous campaign, so unless Bilic’s arrival engenders a substantial improvement on the defensive front, Cresswell’s value lies in his attacking potential. The fact that the former Ipswich Town man never pushed past the 5.7 mark last season and ended with a mere 5% ownership suggests he could become a differential to watch in that mid-price bracket, should he be overlooked once again.

    • Beyond a flirtation with the top four berths at the halfway point of the season, West Ham’s promising campaign fell apart. Their greatest shortcoming was a severe lack of goals, given that the final 16 league matches of Sam Allardyce’s reign harvested just nine. With Bilic at the helm, however, the Hammers are likely to be adopt a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 set-up – crucially, the former Croatia manager, who’s been stressing the importance of attacking with fluidity and numbers, favours inverted wingers, which should afford Cresswell license to maraud forward and provide the width, thus enhancing his attacking prospects.

    • Notwithstanding a trip to London rivals Arsenal in Gameweek 1, West Ham’s start to the new campaign throws up some enticing match-ups. Visits to Liverpool (Gameweek 4) and Manchester City (Gameweek 6) should also prove stern tests, yet the remaining six fixtures up to Gameweek 9 (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR, sun, cpl) all present decent opportunities for clean sheets.

Ibe is a tricky one. He played a few at wing-back last season, but Clyne should secure that spot this season. Depends on the system really. If Firmino starts well, then I can see Markovic fighting it out with Ibe for game time.

JWP should get a fair share of minutes, and even if he doesn't he gets an assist like every match even if he just plus for 10mins. Not worth the price though

Be looking at pre season alot ...but I expect Milner to be in the centre with Henderson and be the more attacking of the pair. He's very consistent as a FPL option when he plays so I think he's a good bet for points.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Top 4 Heavy hitters to start with in FPL.

Depending whether you want a balanced team or not the maximum optimum number of heavy hitters in Gameweek 1 is around four.

I've tried to shoehorn a fifth in and it ends up costing me dearly in defence and requires non playing 4m players.

Given that I consider a heavy hitter anyone in the 8.5m and above category - who are your four?

    Who is going for more?

Who is loading up with ultra premium players and only getting just three heavy hitters (most likely Haz, Aguero and one of costa or Sanchez.

For me I've gone for balance with a good defence, midfield and forward line so four is the most I can get. I've also looked at fixtures of which Arsenal and Manchester United have the best. Chelsea can't be ignored either so am happy to start with two of their strongest players.

Here's my four based on that

      Hazard
      Mata
      Ramsey
      Costa

I'm wagering I can live without Aguero until gwk 4.

Lukaku is under 8.5, but I think on paper he should be a big hitter for GW1. From all three newly promoted sides i think Watford are the most vulnerable at the back. I can see a 4-0 win for Everton.
Other one would be Costa, scored 5 goals against Swansea last season.

Which five? I think if you have a few 8.5s its very possible to have a good balanced team. Although it does reduce your ability to be flexible. So for example having one or two mids and attackers over 8.5m means you can quickly get a 8.5m player who rises in price and emerges as a standout fast. But if you have lots of non price rising 8.5ms then its tricky to make that quick switch.

There are lots of great 8.5m options this year though, but I'd probably advise keeping .5m in the bank if you are going down the lower end of the premium price route to allow an easy switch.

  6. First Half of the Season Wildcard

Is planning for the first 4 game weeks only going to be a set up for fail?

I see that a lot of people are planning for first 4 weeks and then looking to wildcard because of the way they've been split up into 1 in each half of the season.

As someone who never gets past GW4 without using the wildcard this was going to be the season I saved it. I still might. It feels as though we've all been moaning about having to use that second wildcard in Jan transfer window and now we're planning it so we almost certainly might have to.

If you're planning to wildcard so early is that because you are also planning to use second one around same time as Jan transfer window? If not why plan to use your first one so early. Could work well towards December to set up and get those guaranteed starters in. Then get through Jan and have a wildcard for a juicy double.

Or do the launch of the new chips make WC DGWs less attractive? (as you'd have to plan beforehand).

    Be interesting to hear thoughts

I'm doing exactly that. The likelihood is I'd be WCing after GW4 anyway (based on previous experiences) and now, the one that could've held me back from doing so (a huge DGW), I can cater for with my 2nd half WC.

I think it's a little too early to start planning for the WC.

At the start, you want to have balance, so that you could save your transfers as much as you can. There are always a few surprises at the start and it takes time to finally assess which team looks good and which team looks doomed for the season.

Planning for a WC already while we can still have any team we like is a little too much. Maybe you'll use tit in GW4, but then again, I would want to setup a team for long term at the start.

I think holding onto December is a smart move...really take advantage of those christmas schedule.

I'm really pleased about the wildcard rule - I always hated playing it in January and would love to have used that for the doubles instead later on.

Tend to agree, there are a few other strategic times to use it. Prep for December rotation as you mention, fixture shifts around GW10 and early.

Weren't people bemoaning WC-ing in the international break last year because there was little to no price changes?

International break always used to be the 'best' week to WC in order to increase TV - more Wildcards meant more transfers, which in turn meant more price volatility. But now we suspect (strongly) that WC transfers are not included in price changes it actually becomes one of the worst weeks for TV - although that doesn't mean that you shouldn't use it then as I believe that the knock on effects for TV in subsequent weeks is still good.

I think its tricky to plan. Things rarely plan out the way you want in Gameweek 1. I try and minimise risks - go for reliable players, cut out lots of punts and be flexible. Best time to wildcards I 've found are the international break in gwk 8-9 ish...or like last season when there was a big fixture change and Southampton's fixtures turned poor in early December - I used mine then to great effect.

I think the main factor here is whether you start with Agüero or not. If not, I can see a flurry of GW4 wildcards purely to get him in, others will be making wild hits. I personally plan for the first 4 weeks from an attacking perspective to get the best possible start then used the added points(take hits) to bring in those likely to kick on in the next mini phase.

I think it is worth leaving £ in the bank for any changes needed to avoid unnecessary hits just to get the money.
I wouldn't wildcard just to get one expensive player in, big waste imo Andy.

However, I don't think I have ever ever ever had a good start to a season whichever game I was playing. I don't know why, I don't think I went over heavy with punts it just worked out my heavy hitters have GW1 off.
They also have most of the other 37GWs off, but that is a separate matter.

      -WC now

    REPOST.
    Draft 1 of 50,000.

    RMT:
    Fabianski - Schmeichel
    Azpilicueta - Jagielka - Martin - Okore - Coloccini
    Hazard - Depay - Walcott - Grealish - Anya
    Aguero - Rodriguez - Sakho
    0.0m itb

I'm pretty happy with my keeper and would only change to save money.
The NOR/AST/NEW 3 way rotation is looking really good (and cheap).
Walcott and Depay are risks but could both pay off big time.

I like Jagielka a lot, but the fixtures are horrible from GW2-10. Walcott, Depay, Grealiah, Rodriguez... It's a risky side to start off with, though could pay off as you say. I think Anya will be a bit part player, for what it's worth, would swap for a boring but nailed on 4.5m mid.

Is anybody looking at setting up a team solely for 4 weeks given the new wild card rules? There seems no obvious point to play one after that so you’d only be saving it for an injury crisis really.

Considering having 4m non playing keeper, 4m non playing defender and a 4.5m midfield to max up for best players for best four fixtures.

    Thoughts?

You don't happen to have his google doc bookmarked do you? (I just realised my original plan won't be possible considering all the data is gone now (obviously)

They are struggling to give 7.0 price tag to a Palace player. I hope they don't manage to do so. 6.0-6.5 should be enough, he's a CM, may end up playing in the double pivot, and has hardly played for 1.5 years.

so we reckon he ll be 6.0-6.5 ? Currently have punch in my team and not sure cabaye is much of an upgrade ?

It will be tough to price him correctly.

First there's the Palace price structure. It's seen as a rather mid table club, at best, with decent attack, but a CM who was sure starter and on penalties ending up scoring 5 goals and getting 3 assists in last season, Jedinak, is priced 5.0.

Then, there's the nearby history. Cabaye comes from a really big club, but never established himself there as a starter and has a woeful record there. He's certain to start, though, and will be in some set pieces for sure, and more attacking player than Jedinak. But that alone would not warrant a price higher than 5.5, if that.

But then there's the factor that he was very highly valued asset when at Newcastle, and got a great record there, ending up with a price above 7.0 in his last season.

The question really is how much weight they give to that last factor. If they price him at 7.0, they are only thinking of that factor, as they are pricing him above all the attacking midfielders who will play higher up on the pitch than him and have less defensive duties. If they price him at 6.0, it's in the half way. If 5.0-5.5, then they are dismissing that as ancient history.

I think we should look at the pricing of Sigurdsson at Swans last season to get a cue. That suggests that Cabaye is definitely going to be priced lower than 7.0, and in my opinion likely 6.0.

If Jedinak is 5.0 with 5 goals and 2 assists, Puncheon 6.0 with 6 goals and 7 assists, and Bolasie 6.5 with 4 goals and 12 assists, then Cabaye's last Newcastle seasonal record (4+8, 6+2, and 7+3, with real, not FPL assists, however) is decently weighed in by giving him price of 6.0. Anything above that is overpricing him seriously.

            Would you still go

            Bolassie> Cabaye / Punch > Cabaye though ?

              If he's valued at 6.0 ...

In that case I might go for Cabaye. It's a tough choice, though. But at 6.5, let alone 7.0, I will avoid at first.

Have only seen Kane in one RMT so far.

From what I've seen the most popular forwards are: Aguero, Costa, Rooney, Sakho, Deeney & Wilson.

In mine, but might have to go when Aguero comes back. I'd rather keep him, but something's got to give.

Best 5.5 or less DEF to play every week?
    Looking at Skrtel atm

I'm not sure any of the 5.5s are worth it. Possibly Mertesacker?

Mertesacker or Jones, as things stand.

Skrtel isn't the best play every week option as their first seven away fixtures are horrid. Sakho could be a great rotation option at 5m, funnily enough though.

I would say either Fonte or Mertesacker.

Bellerin and Kolorov, but both are a bit punty. Jagielka maybe, dunno what other opinions are.

Cedric at 5 is very likely to start and scored recently.
