Scout Report – Jose Angel Crespo

Cordoba defender Jose Angel Crespo became Aston Villa’s fourth defensive recruit of the summer, after arriving earlier today for a reported fee of just £500,000. The 28-year-old follows Mark Bunn, Micah Richards and Jordan Amavi to the Midlands as Tim Sherwood continues to restructure his first-team squad.

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Sherwood revealed he’s a long-term admirer of the new recruit:

“Jose is a player who has been on our radar for some time and we’re really pleased to secure his signature. He is an experienced player who has played in La Liga and Serie A, two of the strongest leagues in Europe, and from speaking to him I know he can’t wait to play for Aston Villa.”

The History

Born in Andalusia, Crespo worked his way up the youth ranks at Sevilla after joining them as a 15-year-old. After two years of training at their academy, he made his senior debut for Los Rojiblancos midway through the 2005/06 La Liga campaign. Crespo managed a further two league starts that term, spending the remainder of his time turning out for their reserve outfit.

Crespo earned just 23 first-team appearances at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán over the next three seasons while tallying three goals in 73 outings for the B team. In pursuit of a regular starting berth, the Spain U21 international then made the switch to Racing Santander for the 2009/10 campaign. Unfavoured during his stint with the Cantabria club, Crespo notched just 13 appearances over the course of the season.

Having been released by Sevilla in the summer of 2010, the Spaniard plotted a route to Serie B side Padova, where he chalked up one goal in 43 appearances. He then transferred to Serie A outfit Bologna the following summer, recording just seven appearances (three starts) during his debut campaign with the Red-Blues.

Crespo dropped down to Serie B for the 2012/13 season, carding 14 appearances in a year-long loan spell at Verona. With a return to Bologna harvesting only 10 appearances throughout the 2013/14 campaign, Crespo went out on loan to Cordoba last summer. Despite failing to register a single goal or assist across 27 appearances, Crespo signed a permanent deal with the Spanish club earlier this month before making his move to Villa.

At international level, he made a total of 15 appearances for the Spanish U19, U20 and U21 sides but has never been selected for senior duties.

The Prospects

The versatile Crespo offers Sherwood an option right across the back-four slots. Last season at Cordoba, he started 26 times – 14 as a centre-half, nine at left-back and three of the right of defence – whilst in his final year with Bologna, he primarily lined up on the right of midfield.

Whether he can do enough to justify a starting berth is another matter entirely. Crespo averaged less than 15 appearances per season over the past four years, with his most recent stint at Cordoba marking just the second time in his career that he’s been afforded a prolonged run of starts. Having accrued just 83 outings in the top tier of Spanish and Italian football, he may well prove no more than back-up in a defence that was hit hard by injuries in 2014/15.

Certainly, new boy Jordan Amavi looks nailed-on at left-back, given the significant outlay, and with Micah Richards and Ciaran Clark currently shaping up to be the Villains’ favoured centre-back partnership, one would imagine that Crespo needs to displace Alan Hutton at right-back to earn a spot in Tim Sherwood’s starting XI. Given that Leandro Bacuna also offers an option for that position, it looks by no mean certain that Crespo will find his way into the starting XI.

In terms of fixtures, Sherwood’s side have a decent start, with showdowns against Bournemouth, Palace, Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the first six. The fact that Villa conceded 57 times last term – the third worst defence in the top-flight – suggests investment may be hard to come by for Sherwood’s backline regulars.

Setting you back 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Crespo is identically priced to Richards, though the former City defender looks a far more secure pick if you’re looking at cut-price options.

For those prepared to shell out more, Amavi (5.0) netted four goals last term and crafted more key passes (32) than all but seven Premier League defenders. Bacuna, meanwhile, has been stationed on the right of midfield in pre-season and could offer us an out-of-position option – the Dutchman racked up five assists as a right-back in just 983 minutes at the end of last term and also has a share of set-pieces.

Given that the likes of Southampton’s Cedric Soares and the West Brom defence are also available for 5.0, though, it looks very unlikely that many will be prepared to splash out on a porous backline that has plenty of convincing still to do.

So how many players do people now have that they'd say are 100% nailed in their team for GW1 barring injury?

I've got 8 at the moment that will be in my team with no doubts..

    Ruddy
    Merte - Huth
    Ozil - Walcott - Hazard - Wanyama

It's the strikers that I'm really having a tough time on deciding this season!

What's everyone's prize structure in their minileagues? Mine has always been 1st, 2nd and 3rd places and that's it. We've decided to increase the entry fee this year and have more prizes. One idea was to have a prize for the highest individual gameweek score of the season. That way, even those near the bottom still have something to play for. Anyone got any ideas for other prizes?

Most of ours normally have silly prizes spread out randomly for like 8th, 12th etc to keep those completely out of it playing.. Other than that normally just 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

You can throw in a manager of the month prize, that usually goes down well. And FPL can let you filter points by month too.

We just do a 10 entrant £10 ML with £80 for the winner and £20 for the runner-up. However, we do get those lagging near the bottom half way through losing interest. Thinking maybe £10 for runner up and £10 for highest scoring GW?

Don't have any more Bournemouth, other than Francis.

My defence is shaping up to be

      Azpi // Huth // O'Shea // Francis // Holebas

Is that too weak? If I got Wilson, I would probably upgrade the latter two to Cedric and Williams.

    GK: Ruddy / Butland
    - Good rotation, save point potential

    DEF: Mings/Huth/Azpilicueta/Ward/O'Shea
    - Not Sure about that. Azpilicueta will be in the team for the others I have to wait for the end of pre season.

    MID: Yaya/Walcott/Fabregas/Richie/Wanyama
    - Yaya for that price looks good enough to me, walcott and fabregas are save to start, richie as a punt, wanyama on the bench

    FOR: Costa/Rooney/Pelle
Costa will score the same, cant see that falcao will be a serious competition.
    Rooney plays up front again
Pellè nice fixtures and strong against weaker teams.

As an Option Depay+Benteke for Rooney+Richie will have to see some more from depay but he looked good in pre season. not sure about benteke...new team, not much of pre season..

    any comment appreciated

Pretty decent team mate, i wouldnt go for Ward due to their opening fixtures. I would see some other option at 4.5. Also i would do Mings > Francis. But thats preference.

I think Yaya will sit very deep, but he always has the potential to bring points. I am personally going with Silva, and im WC in GW4. Maybe look into Mane instead of Yaya and you will have 0.5 to work with somewhere else maybe upgrade a 4.5 Def to a 5.0 like Cedric.

      Forwards are good to me.

Thanks...I just put ward in there to fill the team...will review that... dont know much about mings/francis but one of them will make the team..

I agree about yaya, but i hope they play him in the hole against strong teams. As I have allready pelle, i cant double up with mane otherwise i think he would be a good pick. not sure if the 5.0 are worth the 0.5 this year.

any thoughts about depay+benteke for rooney+richie? will benteke play the first game?

I am not convinced with the Ruddy/Butland rotation, as Stoke defence was poor last season and Norwich is a newbie to the league, so could ship goals. For the same money (9.0m GKs) I am taking a bit of a risk and going with Stekelenburg (5.0) + 4.0, as I prefer SOU's first 5 GWs to Nor/Stk rotation. Will prob transfer to another GK from GW6, prob Myhill if he is no.1 for WBA.

bloody hell, the knives are out.

Jose Mourinho has accused Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez of "destroying the best team in Europe" when the Spaniard replaced him at Inter Milan in 2010.

The Chelsea boss spoke after Benitez's wife joked her husband was "tidying up" another Mourinho "mess" at Real.

As well as Real, Benitez also managed Chelsea - although he did not directly replace Mourinho at either club.

"The lady is a bit confused," Mourinho, 52, said after Chelsea's International Champions Cup win over Barcelona.

"Her husband went to Chelsea to replace Roberto Di Matteo and he went to Real Madrid and replaced Carlo Ancelotti.

"The only club where her husband replaced me was at Inter Milan, where in six months he destroyed the best team in Europe at the time.

"If she takes care of her husband's diet, she will not have any time to talk about me."

Comparing Rooney to Kane is ridiculous. Rooney was good value even when playing in midfield, and has been consistent for years. Kane has had one good season, and if defences let him get away with what he did last year then they should be ashamed of themselves.

Sanchez started 50 games for Arsenal in all competitions last season, which is a nice round number. So, I thought that looking at Arsenal's attacking options over their last 50 starts for the club would make for a neat comparison (of course, its only useful if you're able to successfully predict the line up!)

    Theo Walcott - 31 Goals, 19 Assists
    Alexis Sanchez - 25 Goals, 12 Assists
    Olivier Giroud - 25 Goals, 11 Assists
    Aaron Ramsey - 16 Goals, 12 Assists
    Santi Cazorla - 9 Goals, 15 Assists
    Mesut Ozil - 7 Goals, 13 Assists

Variable factors in each season, however, Sanchez did this in one season and Walcott did it in three, your looking for the person who will score the most in one season right?

            • 12 Years
            8 years, 10 months ago

Well you're looking for the one that will get you the most points when he's playing. Obviously more to it than that and being able to play the week after is helpful.

You're looking to get the most points over the season - Sanchez being the highest individual scorer doesn't mean that you'd get the most points by having only him for the whole season. At a very basic level those stats suggest that Walcott until he gets injured and then switching to Sanchez would return more points.

Of course, that's taken at a very basic level. Is Walcott worth the headache? You'll have to use a transfer/ points to replace Walcott at some point. Not certain on starting spot, could well just last 13 minutes of a game before picking up an injury etc.

There have been times when Walcott has not been nailed during that time which means he has mostly been starting against the lesser sides due rotation.

I would have to look into PPG but I'd say that a nailed Walcott is almost if not as good as a fit Aguero captain option

Aguero has 43 goals and 12 assists in his last 50 starts for City. That's actually a lower PPG than Walcott though, without factoring bonus or CS points.

        Walcott - (31x5) + (19x3) = 212
        Aguero (43x4) + (12x3) = 208

          Not really, no.

36 in the Premier League, 6 in the Champions League, 6 in the FA Cup, 2 in the League Cup, 9 as a striker.

That seems quite balanced actually. I do have Walcott at the moment as I think that from a fantasy perspective he's a brilliant player if he plays and from here we get to the other point which is that in real life he's very average. One of those selfish players who actually cares more about his own tally than the teams. Doesn't really know how to defend or contribute to the overall game that Arsenal like to play so I would expect that he will be drop as soon as Sanchez is ready to play.

There seems to be a bit too much being made about Cillessen having an injury and possibly missing tonight's CL qualifier, as if it has been engineered in order that Man Utd can sign him and him not be cup-tied.

If he's fit after the final training session he'll play. I can't see him leaving after Stekelenberg & another possible replacement went elsewhere.
