Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – International Round Up

Sergio Aguero scores twice and provides three assists as Argentina thrash Bolivia. Mesut Ozil recovers from illness to turn out for Germany, Anthony Martial is handed his senior debut for France, whilst Gareth McAuley bags a brace for Northern Ireland.

Aguero Runs Riot against Bolivia

Sergio Aguero played a part in five of Argentina’s goals in a 7-0 home win over Bolivia last night. The City striker scored twice and laid on three assists before being replaced on 80 minutes. Everton new boy Ramiro Funes Mori played from start to finish in the heart of defence, keeping the likes of United’s Marcos Rojo, along with City pair Martin Demichelis and Nicholas Otamendi, on the bench.

The Scout Says: Having struggled for form in the opening four Gameweeks, Aguero’s display suggests he’s building up his match sharpness over the international break after returning to training later due to his Copa America exertions. A disappointing blank at home to Watford last time out took his tally to one league goal so far and has persuaded over 15,000 FPL managers to sell the 13.2-priced frontman since the end of Gameweek 4, but last night’s showing suggests they could regret that decision. Still sitting in over 32% of sides, there’s plenty of reason for optimism once he returns to domestic action, as the league leaders prepare for a superb run of opponents (cpl, WHM, tot, NEW, BOU, mun, NOR, avl) in the next eight Gameweeks.

Martial Handed Les Bleus Debut

Anthony Martial’s week to remember continued last night after the United new boy earned his debut during France’s 1-0 win over Portugal. Martial was initially named amongst the subs but replaced Karim Benzema up front with 16 minutes remaining.

The Scout Says: Whilst he failed to get in the goals, last night’s step up in status will surely be a confidence boost for the youngster ahead of his debut for the Old Trafford outfit. Didier Deschamps is clearly a big fan, calling him “a huge talent” and now looks set to integrate the youngster into the France senior squad ahead of next year’s Euro 2016. The French now host Serbia on Monday evening and Martial could even be poised for a first start as he looks to stake a claim for a starting berth for the Red Devils ahead of next weekend’s home encounter with bitter rivals Liverpool.

Ozil Back in Action

Having missed Arsenal’s Gameweek 4 trip to Newcastle, Mesut Ozil recovered from illness to play the full 90 minutes in Germany’s 3-1 win over Poland last night.

The Scout Says: The playmaker’s return is good news for the Gunners, who have yet to fully fire in the first four Gameweeks. Arsene Wenger’s side have managed just three goals, with Ozil earning an assist, though one look at the underlying stats indicates they’ve been more than unlucky – Arsenal lead the way for shots (83) and efforts inside the box (56) but have found the net with just 3.6% of their chances. Ozil has been sold by over 43,000 FPL managers since missing out at St James’ but now looks set to return to the first-team fold ahead of a mixed schedule which pits the north London club against Stoke, Chelsea, Leicester and United in the next four rounds of fixtures.

McAuley Double Earns Ireland the Points

Gareth McAuley bagged a brace for Northern Island as they moved to the top of their Euro 2016 qualifying group courtesy of a 3-1 away win over the Faroe Islands. West Bromwich Albion team-mate Chris Brunt turned provider for McAuley’s second header of the night.

The Scout Says: McAuley’s brace arrives at a time where the Baggies are prepared for a strong run of fixtures (SOU, avl, EVE, cry, SUN, nor, LEI) in the upcoming Gameweeks. Owing to injuries and rotation, predicting the exact composition of Tony Pulis’ backline has been a futile endeavour so far this season. Craig Dawson (5.0) has been the only ever-present among their full roster of defenders, starting the season at centre-back, before shifting over to right-back to replace James Chester. Brunt, who recovered from a hamstring problem in time for last night’s match, looks set to claim control of the left-back berth with Joleon Lescott out of the picture, which leaves two centre-back slots up for grabs. McAuley and Jonas Olsson have partnered up for the West Midlanders’ previous three match-ups yet the arrival of Jonny Evans (4.8) looks bad news for the latter, given that McAuley has been selected for every league match he’s been available for by Pulis. Although West Brom have shipped six goals in their last two home ties – albeit against Chelsea and Manchester City – two clean sheets in the last three suggests they are rediscovering the resilience that served up 16 shut-outs in the season gone by.

Long in the Goals

Shane Long nodded home the final goal as the Republic of Ireland recorded a 4-0 win over Gibraltar, having replaced man of the match Robbie Keane at the 71-minute mark.

The Scout Says: It’s been a tough start domestically for the Southampton striker, who has been named in the first XI in only one of the opening four Gameweeks. With Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mane excelling on the flanks in a 4-2-3-1 set-up against Norwich last time out, and lone striker Graziano Pelle also netting against the Canaries, Long looks unlikely to break into Ronald Koeman’s starting line-up anytime soon. A testing run of upcoming matches (wba, MUN, SWA, che) is likely to deter most from considering the Saints’ regulars, though potential suitors may wish to revaluate Southampton’s main men from Gameweek 9 onwards, with a view to capitalise on a favourable run of matches (LEI, liv, BOU, sun, STO) thereafter.

Not sure why people are using chips so early. I'd rather watch other people use them first to figure out a better strategy for when to use them. I would also rather save them for later to help my team gain ground on 1st or pull away from the herd iny minileague.

    1. That FFS is populated by a lot of managers who come here to get the lowdown on the "clever" moves, especially pre-season, is a self-evident fact. I'm not talking about the regulars or the longstanding members. I'm talking about the "RMT, I want the FFS Template" brigade. I'm talking about the ones that appear on Friday and Saturday before deadline. Not those (those few) that are here in the middle of the summer or in an international break.

    2. That this large group (200k hits on the site in the 24 hours before GW1) acts by default in the way of a herd is also self-evident. The large number of "what should I do, who should I have" posts, especially in the last week of pre-season, makes that obvious. I have no doubt that this was once a community composed in the main of FPL managers trying to exchange good ideas. Maybe you didn't catch up with the fact that it is now well-known enough to have become the resort of a lot of people who just want "the cheat" or the magic bullet for FPL success and only come here to get it.

    3. The fact that this "herd" tends to stampede from one "in the know" selection to the next if they don't immediately perform is also self-evident. Bojan to Naismith to Ulloa to the next "must have" last season (mostly after the points had been scored) was a clear example, only rescued by the eventual landing place in Kane.

    4. The fact that this causes exaggerated price fluctuation and volatility is also self-evident. Walcott this season is a blatant example as described in my post. I don't have the data to prove it but I don't need it because it is so damn obvious. My post explained the mechanics behind it. In addition the repeated "xxx is about to fall/rise in price" posts that appear on here only add fuel to the fire.

    5. The alternative explanations offered such as "people buying players from clubs they support" are fanciful. If some do that (and I know they do) they are not likely to stampede to dump the player when he gets a couple of blanks. They are more likely to look at their team on Saturday morning, scratch their head and wonder why Mané has fallen by 0.2 in price.

    6. The managers driving extreme price volatility are the FPL equivalent of "day traders" and every Walcott or Naismith is a mini "dot.com bubble". These "day traders" (or at least short-term traders) are a heavy component of the FFS herd. They are not the casual manager picking (and probably keeping) players from the team he/she supports. And they are mostly not members of this site, they mostly don’t pay a penny and they mostly contribute very little in other ways either.

    7. I know you don't like me focusing on the "FFS herd" and the "FFS template" but they are an inconvenient truth. They do exist and they do have a deleterious effect on the FPL game by driving exaggerated price volatility. Other sites may contribute to the syndrome but FFS is the biggest and most influential.

    8. If you cared about the game wouldn't you even want to consider this possible problem? Ascertain to your own satisfaction if it is actual or just apparent? If it is actual, to do something about it? That’s what I was trying to do in my post.

    9. Instead you have dismissed my comments as some kind of deprecation of FFS and decided to defend it. That is a real shame. I was pointing to a clear and apparent mechanism and suggesting that something be done to take account of it and/or modify its effects. That's all.

“Too many ‘herd’ RMTs (especially pre-season) = too many low-ownership but high FFS-ownership players = big price volatility if they don't perform.” That's what I wrote and the mechanism is as plain as day. If you are talking about rapid price falls for a player with 150k owners (like Walcott) the 3.3m FPL managers aren’t relevant. Only the 150k are. And if even a third of those are “FFS herd” then that’s plenty to get the wheels in motion.

Contrary to what you wrote yesterday, I have never disputed the wisdom of getting rid of Walcott sharpish (although in pre-season I did dispute the wisdom of selecting him at all). In actual fact I recall the Scouts recommending a “hold” in GW2 even after he wasn’t selected in GW1, so the reverse is the case. The "herd" effect wasn't in the dumping. It was the inclusion of him in so many FFS squads in the first place.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/08/12/the-weekly-shop-gameweek-2/?hc_page=2#hc_comment_10861685

What I was using the example to demonstrate was the effect of a FFS low-ownership bandwagon gone wrong. If and when 30%, 40%, 50% of the owners of a player are FFS herd (or the equivalent) then his price will take an almighty hammering if he fails.

    10. I think you are personally on the defensive about Walcott and have just interpreted my post as a veiled attack on the supposed bad advice offered on this site. It wasn't that at all. Not at all. It wasn't about good players, bad players, good advice or bad advice. If was about a mechanism that creates the opportunity for herd behaviour, leading to stampedes to buy and sell players, leading to price volatility that potentially damages the game. Experienced managers can cope with it, of course they can. That doesn’t make it desirable.

    11. Making this case courteously and rationally, as I did, and suggesting a possible solution (to change the way RMTs are dealt with, especially pre-season), would be seen as constructive in most environments. Not in this one, apparently. 28 upvotes, 127 responses and not a hot topic? You don't want people to see it, maybe?

    12. To be honest, I feel pretty insulted by the way you responded. I expect snide comments from some users of this site. But I didn't expect them from you. "Go and do a degree project about it" indeed. 😕

Before chucking around the 200k hits stat, I'd find out unique visits vs pageviews.

The way the comments work on this site means a single active chatty user will count for hundreds+ of the 'hits'

Ruth - I know you genuinely have good intentions and you often make very good points which are often wrongfully dismissed instantly because of who you are rather than what you are saying, which I imagine is frustrating.

I really don't get though what you are trying to achieve by saying what you are saying in point 12 - really, what is this comment going to gain you? It reminds a bit of someone who doesn't like their job and instead of just getting a new job or even going quietly to HR with their grievances, instead makes a big public show of their unhappiness (and we all know loads of people like this), which every single time gains them absolutely nothing.

If you are that unhappy with how you have been treated (which I am not saying has been correct or incorrect), just leave - what have you lost (apart from £12.50?)? - I have done similar before on other sites where they/someone has peeved me off, and believe me in the long run it is the right thing to do for your own sanity 🙂

In all the points you make, I only support no. 11. It should have been a hot topic fair and square. However, everything else is wrong, imo. Thing is even though Jonty is defending his counter-view, what if the site does actually effect prices like you said? You say yours is a reasonable logic even though you cannot prove the exact numbers. So? The site even if not right now as Jonty says, will definitely get larger and influence prices even more in the coming days, but it is the purpose of this site to increase its members. No?
What I feel is that your response should concentrate on the RMT separation and the mechanism of how to control it. We have already seen that guidelines do not stop RMT spamming, if you could point to a better system, then it would be more useful a comment for this site.
