The ScoutCast – Episode 211 – Beleaguered

It’s quite ironic that, in an episode that focuses on our experience and strategies of mini-league management, my long-term rival on that score goes awol.

Granville is waylaid by “homework” and misses out, but Luke crashes in mid-cast to join Jonty, Andy and myself as we deliver an 80-minute episode, which includes our dubious insights on navigating a team to mini-league glory – mind games and all.

Once again guided by your community questions, we take on the Diego Costa fall-out, the rising stock of Spurs on form and Everton on fixtures, while finding time to wade in on the demise of former darling Sergio Aguero under the stewardship of Pep Guardiola.

This episode of the ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What happened to the revamped scoutcast this week? I was expecting Jonty to go all 'Al Gore An Inconvenient Truth' in this episode and PowerPoint the Goals Imminent table.

Great to see Luke autosubbed into the show. He always adds a lot to the discussion and his tales of FPL Woe are hilarious (don't forget he triple captained Bolaise last season 😆 ) Could you ask him not to click so much, though? 😉

The old lady told a funny story. She was in a pub during WW2 and the sirens went off and a bomb exploded near the pub. The bomb blew her through a door and she woke up in a room with white tiles.

She thought she was in the morgue and that they had made a mistake and Pronounced her dead. Turns out, she was in the gents! 😆

On 28 May 1989, Cooper participated in a recording of the ITV gameshow Bullseye. Footage from the show was later used to match him to witness descriptions. Cooper remarked to host Jim Bowen that he had an unusual hobby of scuba diving, with Bowen remarking that Pembrokeshire was the ideal location.[5]

    Alonso - Baines - McAuley - Ake - Amat

Worth a hit to get a playing defender on the bench after the Baines news.

Nah, but if you fancy shifting Ake this week to get it over and done with, then go for Chambers or Friend (Fabio if you're feeling punts). Decent home fixture as a backup for Your starting 3.

Isn't Friend "the punt" instead of Fabio? Karanka seems to prefer him more.

Fabio replaced Club captain Friend when George got injured, he's done well but Friend most likely to nail LB but Fabio might get moved to RB imo.

Karanka quote a month ago before he was back from injury was Friend is a player a manager loves to have as gives 150% He played them both as wing backs last game. No reason he doesn't continue playing both

        3. Twisted Saltergater
          • 14 Years

Nah, Fabio has been playing when Friend was injured, then moved over to RB when Barragan was out. Yes, Fabio kept Friend out for a couple of games due to his performances, but Friend is a leader in the team and the Boro fans forums don't expect Fabio to take his place. Barragan or Fabio for the RB spot (Fabio more attacking).

@Twisted Saltergater Would you get Friend or Chambers now? I like Friend more because of all the croSes he put in, and according to the Boro fans he will be nailed...

Current Defense is Alonso-VVD-Gibson-Brunt-Evans who all have good fixtures and are performing relatively well... was looking at Baines but is there any of these that you would justify using a transfer on to upgrade to Baines? Or just hold FT if defense looks ok

Looks decent. Think I'd have a different keeper to valdes seeing as you have friend plua he seems a little injury probe. But theee is a lot of value in boro defence.

Only other possible change would be friend and cout to rose and Pedro. Benching headaches and cout has a decent fixture but just food for thought.

My most reasonable way to afford it is to sell Hazard.. Not sure if that is reasonable. Stats aren't amazing so probably better value in someone like Mirallas with the form and fixtures, and is 4 something mil cheaper.

Three of Kane, Costa, Ibra, Lukaku looks very profitable. Throw Giroud into the mix short term too. Basically 3-4-3 is the new 3-5-2 that previously replaced the old 3-4-3.

    DEFENCE STAT DUMP

    1. Penalties 2016/17

GW1-8 there were 31 PKs awarded; 3.87 per gameweek.
GW10-21 there were 38 PKs awarded; 3.17 per gameweek.

The number of penalties is high this season compared to previous seasons. But it was especially high in the first 8 weeks and seems to have moderated somewhat since then. I have excluded GW9 because there were no penalties that week and to add it to either side would artificially skew the picture.

    2. Clean Sheets and Averages Per Season

    2016/17 106 (Average 25.2%) after 210 games
    2015/16 215 (Average 28.3%)
    2014/15 224 (Average 29.5%)
    2013/14 232 (Average 30.5%)
    2012/13 200 (Average 26.3%)
    2011/12 206 (Average 27.1%)

The clean sheet average is still down this season although it is creeping back towards par. Over the first 8 weeks there were only 36 CSs (22.5%); since then there have been 70 in 13 weeks (26.9%). Defender PPG will undoubtedly have been suppressed by this, especially in the early season.

    3. Teams Achieving 40% or better Clean Sheets

    2016/17 Chelsea, Spurs (2) after 210 games
2015/16 Arsenal, United, City, Leicester (4)
    2014/15 Chelsea, WBA, Southampton (3)
2013/14 Chelsea, Arsenal, City, Everton, Southampton (5)
    2012/13 City, Liverpool (2)
    2011/12 United, City, Newcastle (3)

Over the last 3 seasons, at least, there have been more teams hitting the 40%+ level for CSs than in this season so far. And they have generally included at least one team with cheaper defenders for FPL purposes (Leicester 15/16, WBA 14/15, Southampton 13/14). The nearest this season are Middlesbrough on 7 CSs (33.3%); they also have good defensive stats and a team built to be solid so maybe they are a good bet for the last 17 gameweeks.

The lack of performing cheap defender options so far would be another reason for a depressed defender PPG in many FPL teams.

    4. Defender PPG

It has been very hard to get a decent average on defender PPG this season. Top teams in previous seasons commonly achieved 4.5 PPG from defenders and the best (or luckiest) often beat 5 PPG. That is one of the reasons I have been looking at these numbers because my defender PPG is way off those levels (currently 3.55 PPG).

It may be thought that these differences are insignificant but they really aren't. If you are undershooting a rival by 0.5 PPG on defenders (average) that's 57 points over a season. It's a hefty chunk of points.

Anyway, it seems to me that the extreme trends at the beginning of the season are gradually equalising. And I am very convinced that improving defender PPG in the last 17 gameweeks will be an important key to success. Often managers are bedazzled by the headline-making attackers with their intermittent hauls. But having defenders - individually or as part of a good rotation - that can tick along with regular points are just as valuable to a FPL team. And potentially a big differential.

Useful analysis. Is it not fairly common that there are more clean sheets in the second half of the season? As you say though, the stats might suggest that a reversion to the mean could be on the cards.

            • 9 Years

Well, you can get a reversion simply as a result of a bigger sample - things evening out as it were. But I think the rate of penalties earlier in the season (maybe partly caused by the 'holding in the box' clampdown and the uncertainty it caused) also had something to do with the lack of clean sheets in the first 8 weeks. That's kind of why I looked at those.

It is also the case that some of the better defensive managers (Mourinho, Koeman, Conte) were at new clubs where it would maybe take some time to bed in. And others (Dyche, Karanka) were at the same club but coping with a new division.

I don't know. I'm not even trying to say that there will be a reversion. I'm just interested in how to improve defender PPG really. My current tactic is simply to invest more in the defence and to prioritise it more in my thinking.

Yeah I understand you have invested interests in seeing an improvement in defence because of your strategy this season. I guess I'm dubious we will see an improvement. Its such an interesting season where the top 6 are so dominant and evenly matched. Somehow I think this season is different.

I was 4-4-2 for a while and did fine with it. The only reason I reverted was the value of Phillips against a 5.5m defender. Fitting him in meant a switch to 3-5-2.

I guess thats the thing. There is always a cheap mid about that looks good value. The idea of benching two attacking players on the regular works if there isn't any value under 6m.

Depends on when. You have to look at fixtures when you consider defenders. They don't gain clean sheets on their own, their team has to do it.

Nicely done, my defence has certainly let me down this year and the lack of 'bargains' (15/16 - Vardy/Alli/Mahrez etc.) throughout has hampered me chronicly in my ability to invest at the back, which ultimately has led to a lower OR for me. I'm not sure that the investments in a 'top heavy' front 7 has balanced out the lack of points from my 4 *(4.5) (+Alonso) defenders, the likes of Friend/Amat/Evans just haven't been anywhere good enough.
I'm saving this week to asses and hopefully trying to add someone like Rose/Walker/Baines/Coleman to assist Alonso in my defective quest.
Thanks for the stats Ruth but I already had my mind made up on my next bit of strategy but it's nice to see my thinking measured, backed up even in an analytical form.

      Nice analysis, thanks.

Is there a factor we overlook (especially with defences) - it's not just about the bald numbers, but also about how predictable those numbers are? As in, is it a relegation-fodder team that starts off getting clean sheets when nobody expects them? Or is it (say) Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs and Man U doing most of the legwork in achieving those clean sheets? Cos that will cause a major difference in how fantasy managers respond. You touched on it with how there's usually a cheaper team to utilise for clean sheets, and it may we'll be Boro this season, but is there a wider question on how predictable they are?

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

Yes, indeed. Predictability of clean sheets and points in general is one of my big considerations, especially with defenders.

I think that most FPL managers under-invest in defence. Not necessarily in terms of budget (although that's a tendency) but certainly in terms of thinking and prioritisation.

There's a thing on FFS about not wasting FTs on defenders. Well, if you want to run a cheaper defender rotation you MUST adjust it regularly for fixtures. Or alternatively you need to put more budget into defence and have 3 (ideally) predictable premium defenders. One or other I think. Otherwise you'll never be competitive on defender PPG.

Predictability is huge. Back when I had more time on my hands and there weren't so many folk posting awesome, easy to digest stats all the time I occasionally dabbled (in a hamfisted way) with stats myself. I did a little analysis on clean sheet predictability which only scratched the surface but it kind of makes the point (I think): http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/7846734

Average ppg of 4.5 from defense suggests 170 pts in total, which sounds high? Do you know many defenders exceed 170 pts in total per season?

Having a premium defender at 4.5 ppg (170 total) and 2 value attacking defenders at 4.0 ppg (150 total) looks more realistic?

But agree that defense is a key differentiating area for remaining 17 games. Great post as usual and thanks again!

      1. Ruth_NZ

I have looked at top 100 teams over the last 2 seasons at the end of each season using the Statistico tool. The vast majority beat an average 4.5 PPG from defenders. Many beat 5.0 PPG.

Greenwindmill finished 67th a couple of seasons back. He had 4.4 PPG from defenders but he had a huge captaincy average (almost 8 PPG doubled) to compensate. Trust me, 5+ PPG as a defender average is doable, I have seen it many times.

Incidentally, you don't need to have 3 defenders scoring 190+ to do that. You can use rotation. It's the average of your playing defenders each week that counts.

At the risk of sounding pedantic. I don't think balances the first set of tables, if anything it just backs it up.
Looking at fixtures I expect WBA to be in the top 6 (opposite end of current tables) of stat tables after the next 4 games and could be in top 2.

What do you think the score will be?
    a. MCI-TOT
    b. WBA-SUN

FPLwise, I just feel Rondon will score more points than Alli.
    Am I wrong?

    Grant
    Alonso Brunt Baines
    Sanchez(C) Lallana Pedro Phillips(VC)
    Rondon Lukaku Ibra

    subs: Heaton Alli Friend Ake

    3. Friend (West ham home)

Please kindly enlighten me on picking 2 for this gameweek. Serious headache...

not certain but "should" play yes

although last time he was a doubt he went missing for about a month

Should based on what? I've heard nothing to counter Koeman comment which in plain English suggests his not available. Dutch mis-translation?

Blimey. It really doesn't suggest any such thing.

Maybe it's because I lived and worked in Holland for a while and am accustomed to how Dutch people speak English. But what he said means that he expects him to be fit.

Sorry KV but you seem to be hearing something completely different to everyone else.
From what I hear although he doesn't confirm he will start, it does more than likely.

That's exactly what happened. I finally dropped him then.

Even though i just picked him up again, i got a chuckle from this post.

If no injury flare up will play and Wenger said he was back training midweek

I'd be more worried about Wenger chucking Welbeck in from time to time tbh. Wenger likes him.

75% to start this week but I think Giroud owners will be looking over their shoulders soon.

If Spurs win comfortably would it justify calls for Pep getting the sack?

No, he's got to be given a season and half at least.

Sacking a manager is justifiable regardless of the circumstances in modern football . Sacking a manager after half a season after spending the last decade trying to recruit him doesn't make a lot of sense to me .

Never been this indecisive about a game week. If you just got a narrow lead in your cash league, what would be your move with this team?

    Alonso Walker Daniels (Amat Nyom)
    Sanchez Eriksen Siggy Phillips (Allen)

Thanks for the reply TM. Yeah those are my points of concern.

Issue really is who to get Siggy out for. Thinking either Stanislas/Pedro which will allow me to upgrade Origi in a big way.
