Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 33

Our last poll was dominated by two players, Sergio Aguero and Dele Alli, who garnered more than half of all votes.

This latest run-down is set to be another close call, with two Golden Boot-chasing strikers looking like stand-out captaincy picks for their favourable home encounters in Gameweek 33.

Romelu Lukaku’s (10.4) sensational form in front of his own fans carried on at the weekend, with his brace against Leicester City meaning he has scored 12 goals in his last seven Goodison Park encounters and 23 in total this season – more than any other player.

Next up is a visit from a Burnley side that has conceded 30 times and kept just three clean sheets in their 16 league road trips, which should ensure the 45.4% owned Belgian is among this week’s frontrunners.

Prior to a three-match injury lay-off, Harry Kane (11.3) was also on a hot streak, finding the net six times between Gameweeks 24 and 27 to bring his season total to 19.

With a promising 30-minute run-out under his belt in Tottenham’s 4-0 rout of Watford on Saturday, he looks primed for interest for the visit of an obliging Bournemouth defence to White Hart Lane this weekend – the Cherries have shipped 14 goals and kept just one clean sheet in their last six away matches.

Already more than 36,000 FPL managers have brought in the England striker and his 9.6% ownership is set to rise further before the next deadline.

But while Kane looks likely to be the main attraction among Mauricco Pochetinno’s troops, Spurs’ midfield trio of Dele Alli (9.1), Christian Eriksen (8.8) and Son Heung-min (8.4) are others likely to feature prominently.

Against Watford, Son was outstanding, with a 19-point haul from two goals, an assist and maximum bonus returns. Should he be retained in the starting XI to support Kane as expected, the South Korean looks a strong bet to add to his 11 goals for the campaign. Since Saturday he is the most bought asset, with more than 53,000 new FPL managers.

Alli also got on the scoresheet, bagging his 16th goal of the season against the Hornets, while his Danish team-mate also demands attention with five goals and nine assists in front of his own fans.

Sergio Aguero (12.8), who pipped Alli to the summit of Gameweek 32’s poll by just 2% of the vote, also looks an enticing armband option ahead of Manchester City’s trip to Southampton. The Argentine’s strike against Hull City on Saturday was his fifth in six starts. The Saints, however, have proved resilient at home in recent weeks, with two clean sheets in their last four St Mary’s encounters.

In addition, the City marksman has not been an explosive option of late, with his last double-digit FPL points haul coming in Gameweek 13.

Liverpool’s fatigued Brazilian duo, Philippe Coutinho (8.4) and Roberto Firmino (8.6), were preserved away at Stoke City, but with a goal apiece from the bench, they are among other strong candidates in our poll’s chasing pack.

They take on a West Brom side incapable of keeping a clean sheet at The Hawthorns of late, with their last shut-out on home turf arriving against Stoke in Gameweek 24.

A trip to Middlesbrough would have ensured Alexis Sanchez (11.6) competed for the summit – if it had taken place earlier this season when he was fielded as a central striker. But being stranded on Arsenal’s left wing over his last four matches has curtailed his threat markedly and he’s scored just once across that period. Potential backers will be keeping a close eye on the 26.8%-owned Chilean’s performance at Crystal Palace tonight to see if he can revive his output.

Theo Walcott (7.4) and Mesut Ozil (9.4) are two more Gunners’ assets that will be closely monitored at Selhurst Park after impressing in recent matches. The German playmaker has registered a goal and assist in his last two, while Waclott has two strikes over the same period.

Both are also strong differential options, given they have an ownership base below 10%.

Interest in Chelsea duo Diego Costa (10.5) and Eden Hazard (10.3), as well as Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.4), is likely to be tempered when they face each other in a tricky clash at Old Trafford on Sunday.

This could see some voters instead decide to back a differential, with Troy Deeney (6.9) among the best options as he prepares to host a Swansea City side that has conceded 10 goals in their last six. The 7%-owned Hornets’ talisman has scored four in as many home starts and being reduced to a bench role against Spurs on Saturday should mean he’s well-rested for the Swans’ visit.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 33 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article, offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Thanks mate, that's exactly it, and it also seems mad to be thinking of selling Kun if he's scoring goals week by week. Will def get rid of him for Ibra, but surely Kaku needs to stay for the game v. West Ham!

I'd probably hold; you've hopefully got sufficient Spurs coverage in place already.

Plus, you might want Ibra for the DGW. Holding Kun for this week means you can make an easy Kun>Ibra transfer next week, and not have to bother with back-to-back striker switches.

Hey mate sorry got busy with work, thanks for the reply! WC went well.. on 75 with Sanchez and Zaha to go!

Yeah that's exactly it, plus I'll have Eriksen © who has a good record in assisting Kane, plus Kun in scoring form to boot. 2 FTS prior to dgw is probably better. Can even do Rojo for Valencia and then Kaku to Ibra if needed, but will probably keep Kaku for whu

What looks like the best move(s) for DGW34 at the moment with 1FT?

    A) Aguero (MAN) > Ibra
    B) Origi (CPL) > Benteke
    C) JWP (che) > Zaha
    D) Firmino (CPL) > Zaha
    E) Eriksen (cpl) > Zaha
    F) Siggy (STO) > Zaha
    G) Brunt (BLNK) > Boro def
    H) GK > Valdes/Hennessey

Well that's a decision you need to make... it would be a shame to literally burn a FT and then Kane scores a hatty giving you a severe red arrow that you could've perhaps avoided...

in GW 32 Kane only had a 2.6% ownership in the top 10K, while Lukaku's was 86.8%. (overall 9% vs. 45%).

Kane's will grow, but he can't be as highly captained as Lukaku, no?

Hi there, I am doing quite well with 79 pts plus Sanchez and Zaha tonight but I am not very happy

I got a minus 12 to build the team and couple of moves were very bad:

I was obsessed bringing Eriksen for Coutinho and I had to get Valdes for Heaton to enable that and in the end Coutinho outscored Eriksen and Heaton outscored Valdez so... -8 to get less points...

Not only that but I also placed Mawson (2 pts) ahead of Stephens (9 pts) in the bench...

I could be with 99 pts right now 🙁

got no idea when to use my TC chip.

Would Sanchez or Ibra in a DGW even be better than Kane or Lukaku this week? Lukaku seems to have everything going for him, amazing home form and a great fixture against a side with a horrible away record.

Which DGW is the question too, last year I remember it was better to TC in the week that most Benchboosted, Sanchez or Aguero would have got you 75 iirc

    2. MANGE TOUT RODNEY
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 2 months ago

I have the same issue. As soon as you suggest TC on a single gameweek player on here you get shot down...

Ibra in 34 does not look great, and Sanchez in 35/36 not great either.

I am very tempted with Kane/Lukaku TC this week! Hat trick would mean 50 or so pts.

      Worth a gamble?

Everything points to a Lukaku or Kane explosion this weekend, you would not bet against Lukaku's with his home form and I think Spurs could score 4 or 5 again.

Personally I would love to play it on Sanchez or Aguero/Jesus in 37 with Arsenal having stoke and sunderland and city leicester and west brom

    3. Big Mac 24
      • 11 Years

Son triple would've given a healthy 57 points in a single week so of course a one week haul is possible . I also failed with Aguero TC. I think if you get 45 points or more with TC you can be happy.

Sorry, typo, meant 55 or more. On the other hand, a pair of discreet 2-0 wins with a midfielder like sanchez getting a goal and an assist gets you 84! double gameweek player it is!!

Both Lukaku and Kane offer great captain (and triple captain) options this week, and both have around 51% goal involvement for their teams. To separate them, I've been looking at how vulnerable their opponents are to conceding against 'big' teams and strikers. To do this, I've gone down the results section on the BBC for BUR and BOU away from home this season, and jotted down the positions of the scorers against them. I could have missed a game or two, but I think that both sides have conceded in 13 away games this season, totaling 30 and 32 goals respectively.

Positions of scoring players are (subject to my own subjective judgement and knowledge):

    Scoring against Burnley :
    Center Backs: 2
    Full Backs: 3
    Midfielders; 6
    Wingers; 7
    Strikers 10
    OG; 1
    Pen; 1

    Scoring against Bournemouth:
    Center Backs: 4
    Full Backs: 1
    Midfielders; 4
    Wingers; 9
    Strikers 13
    OG; 1
    Pen; 0

    Results against the top 7:

    Burnley: 3-0, 0-0, 2-1, 2-1, 2-1, 2-1 = 11 total
    Bournemouth; 4-0, 3-1, 3-0, 6-3, 1-1, 2-2 = 19 total

Based on this, it seems to me that Burnley are more vulnerable to conceding to players coming from deep (mids and full-backs), with Bournemouth more vulnerable to conventional attacking players and set plays. Added to that, Burnley seem to be surprisingly resilient against the big teams away from home.

    Kane Triple Captain it is!

Only doubts surround how long Kane will be on the pitch for. You'd imagine if it's 3,4-0 then he'll be off after 70 minutes or so, whereas Rom will play for as long as he wants.

I searched the same thing yesterday.Just to say that Burnley in their last 3 away games:against Liverpool conceded by two mid(Can and Wijn),against Swansea conceded two goals by a forward(Liorente),same against Watford by two forwards(Deeney,Niang). So maybe Burnley are also vulnerable to conceding goals from all sides?
