Moving Target – Andrew Robertson

Having bolstered their attacking options with the signings of Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke, Liverpool moved to strengthen their defence with the capture of Hull City left-back Andrew Robertson.

The 23-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee, which could reportedly rise to £10 million, and has signed a long-term contract at Anfield.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp expressed his delight over the options he now has available to him at left-back:

“This addition gives us fantastic competition in the left full-back position now. Obviously, James Milner did very well for us last season there and can play most positions on the football pitch. Alberto Moreno looks really good in pre-season, and we have Jon Flanagan back, who can play left or right full-back. This signing strengthens us at full-back, and I’m really pleased about this.”

The History

Born in Glasgow, Robertson started his youth career at Celtic, before joining Queen’s Park after being released by the Scottish giants.

Robertson broke into the first-team at Queen’s Park during the 2012/13 season, and made 34 league appearances, registering two goals and three assists, before moving to Scottish Premiership side Dundee United in June 2013.

He enjoyed another successful campaign, producing three goals and six assists in 36 matches, with his performances catching the eye of Premier League side Hull City.

The Tigers paid £2.85 million for the left-sided player in July 2014, but while he featured regularly in the top flight – claiming two assists in 24 outings – the Tigers suffered relegation to the Championship.

Robertson stayed at the KCOM Stadium, though, and was a crucial member of the side that earned promotion back to the Premier League, registering three goals and five assists in 45 appearances.

Although Robertson was again a consistent performer last season, producing one goal and two assists over 33 matches, he suffered a second relegation.

After featuring four times for Scotland U21s, Robertson made his senior debut against Poland in March 2014.

He has made 15 appearances for his country, with his only goal coming in the 3-1 defeat to England in November 2014.

The Prospects

While James Milner filled in admirably at left-back last season, the fact that Liverpool will be stretched this season should they qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stages meant that there was a need to strengthen.

Alberto Moreno has struggled to make an impression since moving to Anfield, so Robertson looks set to battle it out with Milner for the starting role.

While Robertson has played some matches on the left side of midfield, and as a wing-back, he is a natural left-back.

The 23-year-old is strong technically, with the ability to combine effectively with team-mates down the flank, while he also has the stamina required of a modern day full-back.

His crossing is admired, and he possesses the dribbling ability to offer a real attacking threat.

Indeed, the major advantage he has over Milner is the fact that he is left-footed, offering greater balance to the side, with the former England international always having to cut back inside on his right foot, allowing less space for his team-mates.

Although Robertson is an accomplished defender, with strong positional sense, he will probably need to improve that side of his game to become the first-choice at Anfield.

However, that is unlikely to phase the new signing, who seems determined to take his opportunity to push for a first-team role.

“I want to be a starting XI player at Liverpool. I don’t want to come here and think I’ll just be happy on the bench or I’ll just be happy being in a 25-man squad. That’s not the type of person I am, I want to play. I know it’s going to be hard work, the hardest work I’ve ever done, but I’m up for the challenge, and it’s hopefully one I can succeed in.”

Comparing Robertson’s underlying statistics to Milner’s last season, the Scot only averaged a key pass every 144.05 minutes, far inferior to Milner (56.43).

Milner also offered far more of a goal threat, producing a shot every 87.78 minutes, far better than Robertson (391).

While you’d expect Milner’s numbers to be more impressive given he played in a far more successful side, and benefits from taking penalties, the data, particularly in terms of goal attempts, suggests that Robertson is unlikely to threaten goals.

In terms of the defensive statistics, Robertson registered a clearance, block or interception (CBI) every 18.88 minutes, marginally superior to Milner (21.07).

Perhaps more significantly, Robertston lost just 23 challenges – events which measure how often he was beaten one-on-one – averaging one every 118 minutes.

In contrast, Milner failed with 49 challenges and, although he played more often, he lost one every 64.4 minutes. To put that into perspective, Clyne lost just 23 challenges at right-back – one every 144 minutes.

There’s a perception that Milner’s versatility wasn’t exposed too often, but those statistics make it clear that he was targeted by opponents on occasions. Robertson could again prove stronger in this area, and that could eventually sway Klopp’s thinking.

Having been re-classified as a defender for 2017/18, Milner – who is available at 6.5 – has emerged as one of the leading premium options.

He’s currently sat in over 10% of FPL squads, with the combination of spot-kick duties and defensive returns a tantalising prospect.

But Robertson’s arrival certainly makes rotation far more likely, something Klopp has already stated will be prevalent this season.

Nathaniel Clyne, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip all come in at 5.5 in FPL, though Robertson has arrived in FPL for 5.0. That certainly opens him up as an option should he show signs of ousting Milner over a sustained spell.

Liverpool’s opening fixtures (wat CRY ARS mci BUR lei) are mixed, though, so Reds defenders aren’t expected to be seen as a priority.

Last season, Klopp’s side kept 12 clean sheets, although they did rank joint-ninth for big chances conceded (58).

Premium assets from Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United may be in more demand, then, with the latter pair presenting more favourable early schedules.

The addition of Robertson could well mean that we are now forced to look to the likes of Clyne and Matip when considering the Liverpool defence, with that duo looking more secure starters.

In saying that, there’s also a possibility that Milner could occasionally alternate with Clyne on the right if Klopp wants to limit his tinkering.

Milner picked up a thigh injury in today’s Asia Trophy clash with Leicester but, if fit, he remains the favourite to start the season. However, the prospect of owning a 6.5-priced defender who could be prone to rotation undoubtedly dents his appeal.

Pre-season matches will hopefully provide some insight as to how much faith Klopp has in Robertson, and if he impresses, it could have serious repercussions as to how Milner is viewed.

Ultimately, unless we’re afforded clarity from Klopp’s summer teamsheets, the uncertainty caused by Robertson’s arrival now forces a reassessment of the pecking order in Liverpool’s backline.

It's funny seeing all these teams with Alli trying to 'cover' Kane's points.

Won't stop Harry banging in his hat tricks 😉

but can Son cover Alli? That's an interesting question. 9.5 vs 8.0. Not fan of using the word 'cover' myself btw 😉

That depends on how Pochettino rotates around CL.

He might go with the 3-4-2-1 the whole autumn and let Son handle the easier CL games. In that case Alli is obviously more worth it.

If the focus is more on 4-2-3-1, then I would rather have Son at 8.0 than Alli at 9.5. Alli seems to perform a lot worse with Son in the team.

It's still a bit early to tell since Son is out injured. Son is probably best avoided until GW4 at least.

The question is more of is the Kane money better spent elsewhere?

      For me:

      1) Kane and Sanchez needs to get 6.5 pts per 90 mins to justify their value.
      2) Lukaku and Aguero need to get 5.75 pts per 90 to justify their value
      3) Morata, Lacazette, Jesus, KDB and Hazard need to get 5.25 pts per 90 to justify their value.

Kane may be able to do it.

Given we're likely to WC no matter how hard we try, there's no point in worrying about City rotation too much atm, I'd say. There's points to be had at the Etihad if we're willing to hold our nerve

Exactly. Same with other CL teams, there won't be rotation in the 1st few GWs. I've set a team up to try maximise points for 3 GWs only, then WC.
It worked really well for me last season.

I would worry about Sané/Sterling/Jesus/Agüero getting rotated before CL starts. Guardiola did rotate the wingers last year in the first 3 GWs. The rest of the team remained more or less intact.

Sane seemed immune from rotation since he broke through. However, I remember Lescott looking nailed on in the summer of 2012 post title win, but Mancini then went on to rotate him with Nastasic

The same thing could be said about Sterling before GW27. I think Sterling was simply overworked last season, which made Sané nailed on.

Agüero/Jesus/Sané/Sterling were the front 3 for most of the second half of the season. Jesus was injured for 8 games. Agüero got injured for 2 games at the end of the season. Sterling didn't even get subbed on in the last 2 games.

We are basically judging Sané to be nailed on because he started 7 out of the 8 games that Jesus/Agüero/Sané/Sterling were available. 2 of those games were Jesus's first game after injury/coming to City. 3 of those games Agüero was stuck to the bench. 2 of those games Sterling didn't even get subbed on. The one game that everyone definitely were available for was against Middlesbrough. Both Sané and Sterling got subbed on after 50 minutes in that game.

Yeah, your post confirms my inclinations. He's not a particularly good GK imo, whereas Bego is a class above 4.5. We tend to overlook the skill level of the actual GK when picking one, rather than focusing on the team in front of them.

        Bego/Fabianski
        Forster
        DDG

Depending on how much you're willing to spend.

Early on I am looking primarily at fixtures. Gomes has skill and put up 157 in 2015/16. So he's a solid shot stopper and Watford could be more solid defensively, just feel there are other keepers who will see more shots and potential saves with better chances for CS. Begovic has a good track record as well. If I spent 9.0m on keepers I like that duo, but I need that 0.5 elsewhere, so for me its Foster/Elliot to start.

I like how WHM is coming together, should be a solid team. I think Hart only improves that defense. Also a big fan of Cresswell, could be a solid option at 5.0; gets forward, good for a few goals and assists. 133 points in 2015/16 and 129 in 2014/15.

He is popular because if you go Kane and Lukaku upfront it's hard to have Jesus or Kun also, so I think he is there almost by default and the .5 difference helps too.

          • 7 Years

Sane was 7.5 last season and was proving to be much better value. Still would be at 8.5. And De Bruyne only got assists last season which is risky to count on. If Sane appears to be nailed during pre-season, he's got to be much better value.

Yeah but the about of assists was crazy. An assister is an assister in just the same way a proven goal scorer is a goal scorer. You think less chance of replicating assist output? If anything KDB might do it and add some more goals too. Sane would be exceptional value if nailed.

Although his chances created to assists was quite high. Something like 17%. Other top players were around 10%.

You can build 12.5-11.5-10.5 FWD line but it is really tempting to get Lacazette. If he scores 2-3 goals in GW1&GW2 he will become 'a must' for GW4-GW8, reliable (C) option in 3 of 4 GWs that term.
With Kane-Luk-Laca it's KDB who seems to be the best pick from City. Jesus may play wide and I am bit worried about his conversion rate this season. Of course he is great FPL asset.
Kane-Luk-Laca-KDB sounds better for me in comparision with Kane-Luk-Jesus-Alli/Coutinho.
Kane-Luk-Laca gives you great (C) every single GW.

          1. Cok3y5murf
            • 7 Years
            6 years, 10 months ago

Well not everyone is going with 3 big hitters up front (wrecks the midfield). And not everyone is going with Kane. So in other teams, all of Alli, Eriksen, Coutinho, Salah, Mane and Sane would seem better value than KdB.

            1. FotnikPL
              • 6 Years
              6 years, 10 months ago

I won't argue that Alli is better value than KDB. Kane is new Aguero so he is 'a must' for me. Alli/Eriksen won't 'cover' Kane and he is way better (C) option. I really want to start the season with Laca. I watch Ligue1 for couple years and he is great finisher. I don't like term 'cover' in FPL but it is bit of cover to be honest.
I want to have City&Arsenal player from GW1 on but the only one from The Gunners is Laca. So he will fill my 3rd slot and it is all about KDB/Sane. I will monitor pre season but KDB seems more safe pick than Sane.

Mids around that price don't seem to offer huge value or potential, but Kane is Kane & otherwise I'm on Lukaku and Jesus.

They both offer good value (probably better than Kane), but they aren't the captain pick Kane is, and it's in the armband that gives Kane his "must have" status.

My boys, my boys, my boys - I really can't decide on what pairing is better out of Pogba & Lukaku, Sane & Jesus (+0.5).

Kolarov to Roma is all but confirmed. Shame really, would've been class if he went to a mid-table PL club

I see a lot of mention or GW3 wildcards and played my WC at that point last year.

Is not more sensible to save up 2FTs and if needed use them and a single hit as a mini-WC at that stage? Even by week 3, there can be a lot of cases where form appears to be class and isn't.

Mine went brilliantly last season. It's all about setting up a very short term team and following through with the plan.

Then revisit all this pre season prepping with a lot more knowledge on starters and tactics etc

I liked his views. Very forthright and always challenged the template. I remember him going triple Saints defense (Bert, Clyne, Toby) one time.

I usually don't get too worked up about posts and in his case, he had decent discussions for the most part. They add to the forum. Lol @ them when it doesn't work out for them, grit your teeth and doff your hat if what they've been going on about turns out right. Come to think of it, Waxys (may have the name wrong) posts a bit like him. Funny how easily people get annoyed.

I am planning on GW7 for the WC and HOPE to roll a FT to give me two at the start of the season. But we know how that often goes and planning is out the window and we start jumping on the bandwagon (Capoue) early.

The worst scrnario is when you've planned for the long term but you're "forced" to WC within a few GWs. Lose lose.

Could be after an international break or when your premium players have poor match ups in a single week or a week where very few teams play.

Not been on for a few days!

      New team thoughts?

      De Gea
      Bertrand - Kompany - Trippier - Ake - Rangel

      KDB - Salah - Zaha - Phillips

      Lukaku - Lacazette - Mounie

I think this might be the hardest GW1 team to pick in years. The number of forward options, the numberless ways to incorporate (almost eqaully) exciting players from all the top six teams, the tempting defenders at 6.0m and up. I can barely agree with myself on two or three definitive players in my GW1 lineup. And I genuinely feel that it's a coin toss on who's gonna blank and who's gonna haul out of all the Lukaku/Kane, Lacazette/Morata, Aguero/Jesus dilemmas. Or between the premium assets within each team, like Alli vs Kane, Alonso vs Willian, Bellerin vs Ramsey. And on top of that, I'm pretty sure we're all overlooking some assets from the smaller teams. There's plenty of mid price options who might as well explode.

Am I overthinking things, or is it harder to put down a (at least on paper) pretty "safe" team for GW1-3?

Right now, I'm torn between the urge to have Kane/Kaku/Kun upfront, and the more sensible thought of flexibility being the key. I think those of us who lend a thought to how to convert from the ice cold player we went for, to those firing early in will be really glad come september.

        No one knows..

Play it safe pick 11 decent players that will 100% start, and make sure money is split around the 3 areas, so you can tweak asap to get in the hitters.

Fixtures and proven players is how I am starting. Would much rather go with the template based players with a high TSB% than new boys on the scene; Lacazette or Morata. Not that they won't be a success in the EPL, but we know what players like Kane and Lukaku can do. So while my early planning is through GW6, I expect things will change before that period. Best case scenario it doesn't but I do leave myself with options. If that third forward doesn't come to fruition, then with a bit more in the budget, adding a Aguero or another big forward would be warranted.

        Agree with much of that.

In a world of many potential options, have looked to put together a team that is:

        a) flexible
        b) full of established EPL performers
        c) low on "punts"
        d) has strong captaincy options

On the one hand, it's the same every year in terms of dilemmas. BUT the longer you play, the more information to deal with and the more tempting various options become. You can send yourself nuts trying to avoid the mistakes of yesteryear. Why is this hear perhaps more difficult than ever? Spurs to sustain progress even at Wembley. Years of vomiting cash ever going to come to fruition in Manchester. Chelsea expensive, underwhelming fix, Conte rumours, Costa+Lukakugate. Pool with Europe to contend with. Sanchez expensive with Arsenal's Lacazette and morale unknown. Serial flakers Redmond and Zaha with great fix but new managers, respectively.
