Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Pre Season

A goal for Jesse Lingard and lots of praise for Anthony Martial as Manchester United see off Real Madrid after a penalty shoot-out of many more misses than hits.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s single pre-season match.

Manchester United 1 Real Madrid 1 (United win 2-1 on penalties)

A decent goal, an almost comedic penalty shoot-out, Ronald McDonald…Manchester United’s friendly with Real Madrid had a little bit of everything, not all of it good.

The best came from Jesse Lingard, who put the Red Devils ahead on the stroke of half-time after brilliant work by Anthony Martial.

Lingard now has a goal and three assists from a pre-season programme in which he has been consistently favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Against Madrid, he played as part of an attacking trio in a 4-3-3 formation, but he has also been employed as a wing-back as the United manager clearly seems to want to feature the 24-year-old heavily in his various plans.

Should he remained favoured once the season starts, the 6.0-priced midfielder could yet attract considerably more than the 0.8% of Fantasy Premier League managers currently with him in their squads.

The same cannot be said for new signing Victor Lindelof (5.5). The centre-half had a torrid time of it after coming on at half-time for Eric Bailly, and his struggles peaked when he gave away the penalty that led to Madrid’s equaliser.

The Swede is not looking comfortable in a United shirt, although Mourinho has yet to play him alongside Bailly – the presumed ideal partnership that has persuaded 16.1% of FPL managers to plump for Lindelof over the proven but pricier Ivorian.

The teams were led out onto the pitch by Ronald McDonald; a farcical start to a match that finished in similar fashion, with just three of ten penalties scored in a penalty shoot-out that even a burger-loving clown would have improved.

By then, Mourihno had more serious issues to chew on, particularly the precious few second-half minutes Ander Herrera managed before going off injured.

The United boss remained relatively upbeat about it post-match.

”I just feel sorry for one more injury which I hope is not important. For Ander to come off after 10 minutes, it has to be painful. But sometimes painful doesn’t mean there is a real problem, so let’s wait.”

And Mourinho was full of praise for Martial, an 8.0-priced midfielder in FPL who has not always enjoyed the public backing of his manager.

”Obviously we want more consistency in his talent. I think today was positive for him, that is why I left him for 90 minutes on the pitch. He was enjoying it, he was trying new things, and it is important in these friendly matches to try new things, which he did. That is important for his confidence. I can say that he is training better than before, he is working harder than before, his ambition is to try to bring his talent in a consistent way.”

United’s eye-catching early schedule – home matches with West Ham, Leicester City, Everton and Crystal Palace and trips to Swansea City, Stoke City and Southampton – almost demand our FPL investment.

Their summer remains hectic, with three more friendlies and then a UEFA Super Cup date with Madrid still to come, but should give us further pointers as to Mourinho’s early-season intentions.

At present, the stock of both Lingard and Martial is in the ascent, while our confidence in Lindelof has suffered a knock.

Manchester United XI: Romero (De Gea 46); Fosu-Mensah (Blind 46), Bailly (Lindelof 46), Jones (Smalling 46), Darmian (Valencia 78); Carrick (Herrera 46 (McTominay 51)), Fellaini, Pereira (Pogba 46); Lingard (Mkhitaryan 46), Martial, Rashford (Lukaku 46).

Keep up to date with all the summer action with our Pre-Season Guide available here.

Best defence I can come up with if looking to wildcard before the second international break:

    Foster - Myhill
    Cedric - Trippier - Bailly - Daniels - Dunk

Should be able to pick 4 defenders every week that avoids top 7 opposition.

Daniels will play against 3 top7 sides that term: City, Arsenal and Everton

My same back 5 with the same plan. Might gamble with Cook as a differential over Daniels. I had Lindelof in place of Bailly but that doesn't seem a safe bet for regular starts at this point.

Okay, so Lindelof looks a bit shaky. Are we losing confidence?

Where is your United defensive investment going? Are you prepared to spend on Valencia? Is Bailly the safest and most economical or are you prepared to ride it out on Lindelof and hope that he sees off Jones to start. Would you even turn to DDG in goal.

Or, heaven forbid, are you completely overlooking Mourinho's rearguard regardless of those fixtures?

It's this morning's Hot Topic and I'll launch a poll to extend it further.

Never had confidence in Lindelof. Bailly all the way for me. Valencia isn't in the Alonso or Milner class of getting attacking points so the £0.5m saving is worth it for me.

DDG is not a good option imo, last year Romero was given Europa Duty, but this year Mourinho can easily give the fixture before CL match to Romero and start DDG in CL.

Bailly/Valencia look like the best option, Fantasy miracle would be Shaw nailing his spot in the team.

Surely in this case, DDG takes PL and UCL. Both tournaments are the priority. Romero will likely get League Cup and FA Cup. Still DDG sucks up a lot of money as a GK. With baps likely going to the attacking players in the line up.

daley blind if possible. him playing through injury at the end of last season was like cat-nip for mourinho, and that's ignoring the huge actual performances he put in alongside bailly. looks like him or darmian for the left back spot too.
but yeah super cup should tell us more, no point guessing.
my guess before the pre-season games actually started was bailly and blind would start the season as the CBs, then lindelof would be phased in. doesn't appear to be the case though, jones and smalling getting plenty of chances to impress

I'm not tempted by any of them to be honest. Mourinho has said in the past Valencia can't manage two games a week, so that worried me. Bailly should be nailed but no attacking threat.

Even though the first GW of the season is important. I consider what one does after that far more. Going safe is a trend I use and doubtless most experienced FPL managers.

For me DDG or Bailly for fixtures. I think Bailly as goalies tend to come out in the 1st few weeks.

Whilst United will surely rack up the clean sheets I believe there is better value elsewhere.

We have Trippier at 5.5m who is heavily involved in attacking play and will rack up assists and CSs. There's Cedric at 5.0m with terrific fixtures. And there's a wealth of premium options in attack that we need to keep funds back for.

Cedric not even returned to the squad yet due to Confed Cup action- for me he is a doubt to start the first game.

Cedric has not been included in the party going to France this week for a training camp in Evian as per below link.

As a fixture scorned Valencia owner from last season, I don't have any confidence in him being nailed on when CL comes around. He was regularly rested around EL games. Expect Lindelof to be straight in next to Bailly, it's up to him whether he retains the spot. £5.5 is potential value.

      None.

Lindelof shaky, don't want to spend 5.5 in a GK, Bailly too expensive to my liking, Valencia too (don't have any 6.5 def in my team atm) because of my three big hitters up top. Better value elsewhere imo considering Cedric or Dawson's fixtures for instance

Baily for start security. Lindelof will be rotated around European games. Baily is Jose's main man, his new JT. If he's fit, he starts.

What you're missing is that a gap big hole in the middle of the defence compromises ALL the defenders, gk included. If Lindy's dropped the prospect of Smalling or Jones filling in doesn't inspire confidence. I had doubled up on a United defence - now I've got none and re-prioritized with Kaku and Mkhi.

Avoiding Mourinho's defence, this season, with those fixtures, would seem very risky and inexperienced. For me that is not an option. But with my DDG disappointment last season, I feel obliged to choose one from the defence. Lidelöf existed in my team until I read the above. Now I am tempted to go for Valencia and risk the additional cost. For me Bailly is to much neither-here-nor-there. If I do not see Lindelöf in the team by 11 August, I feel I have to choose Valencia. It's the beginning of the season and choosing a player that will not play the 90 minutes would hurt...

Shouldn't pick a player simply because of the shirt they're wearing.

Valencia is the only worthwhile United pick.

For 6.0, Kompany, Bellerin, Alderweireld offer more than Bailly.

And for 5.5, Trippier, Bertrand, Monreal offer more than Lindelof.

This is because attacking threat must be considered alongside CS chances.

Valencia is the only real option - and a very good one at that, because he gets forward.

Personally, I'm not willing to spend £6.5 on a defender atm, so so far, no United defenders have made it into any of my drafts. Lindelof has always been a bad pick - people are late catching on.

Lloris got the most points from any Spurs defender last season. Do you really expect Trippier to get more than 130points?

Back four got injured at various pts of the year. Rose wld have gotten more than 130 I'm sure. Trippier only started the last few games.

Same amount of CS, less goals and assists. Other good 5.5m keeper picks, not so many defender 5.5m alternatives.

Because you can get a nailed 4.5 keeper but can't be so sure about defenders of that price I suppose
Plus attacking returns from Trip and Lloris probably not going to get many save points

Possible heavy top line? Will probably rotate between 4-3-3 and 3-4-3:

    Foster
    Cedric • Trippier • Daniels
    Coutinho • Willian • Phillips • Lingard
    Kane • Jesus • Lukaku
    (Elliot • Carroll • Mee • Yedlin)

Dodgy midfield there. I doubt Phillips will be prolific and Lingard will mostly get you useless 1 point sub cameos.

      Lingard isn't nailed.

United are in the transfer market for a winger and Mou has repeatedly been saying he needs a bit more in the transfer market. Even the Inter boss said that if a United come with a serious offer Perisic can leave.

The other thing I noticed with Lindelof is that he's playing on the right side of the centre back pairing - the same side Bailly has, does, and probably always will play on...

If he were being moulded for a partnership with Bailly, would Jose not put Lindelof on the left given the choice?

Hmm, my faith is currently low. Baggies are sniffing around Smalling but Lindy's start prolly means Mou will definitely hang on to Smalling whilst he too is unsure about Lindy.

Boosts up your 11 though. Could be a risk worth taking. Can always do a double switcheroo and get a nailed-on cheap defender if things don't work out.

Nice idea but I disagree. You have to bear in mind the permissible formations in FPL. If you go three at the back and one of your defenders doesn't play you have to draw a sub defender from the bench. If it's a non-starting 4.0 you automatically lose potential points.

    2. So Troublesome

Why not go with Monreal over Kolasinac. Then you can upgrade your 4.0s.

Midfield is good, but I'd have Coutinho ahead of Alli and agains save 0.5 for defence.

Morata is a risk in my view. Why not wait a few weeks.
