Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Tuesday

Big players perform and big teams progress as October’s international break finally comes to an end with World Cup triumphs and tears in full flow.

Eden Hazard, Gabriel Jesus and Romelu Lukaku all score, but the half-time substitution of Sead Kolasinac prompts further concerns over Arsenal’s already threadbare backline.

Here are the notes from a big Tuesday night across the world.

Big names make big news

A week might be a long time in politics, but the last 24 hours has produced some seriously significant Fantasy developments.

Hot on the heels of the news that Sergio Aguero is back in light training for Man City just 11 days after his Amsterdam misadventure, his team-mate and fellow striker Gabriel Jesus was reminding us all of why he’s the second most purchased Fantasy Premier League asset ahead of Gameweek 8.

Jesus scored a brace for Brazil, one of which was set up by Willian’s industrious five-minute substitute appearance, in a 3-0 win that killed off Chile’s hopes of qualifying for next year’s World Cup finals in Russia.

The result leaves Alexis Sanchez to concentrate on the league with Arsenal – or maybe City should he jump ship in the January transfer window.

Meanwhile, in Europe, Belgium’s 4-0 win over Cyprus came courtesy of a double from Eden Hazard as the 3.6%-owned Chelsea star bigged up his differential credentials ahead of a trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The match also confirmed the availability of Romelu Lukaku, who played the last 24 minutes and scored his 16th goal in all competitions since the start of the season. The striker powered through a hapless Cypriot defence, muscled his marker off the ball and struck a sublime low drive into the corner. It was the mark of a confident and fully fit player.

That will come as a huge relief to his 59.4% ownership ahead of Man United’s Saturday lunchtime trip to Liverpool, although the trend is to sell the big Belgian – 101,000+ have done just that his week, whereas just over 67,000 have brought him in.

Jesus, by contrast, is undeniably in demand.

Close to a quarter of a million managers have secured his services as Pep Guardiola’s men prepare to host Stoke City, although it will be a surprise if he lasts the entire match having put in two 90-minute shifts for Brazil over the international break. Indeed, he has yet to make it past the hour-mark at the Etihad this season.

The 16.7% who own Kevin De Bruyne will be feeling rather more confident of their man’s minutes as the midfielder only came on for a late cameo against Cyprus, replacing Hazard.

Thibaut Courtois, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Nacer Chadli all played the full match against Cyprus, with Simon Mignolet, Kevin Mirallas and Steven Defour unused subs.

Kolasinac sparks new Gunners scare

Sead Kolasinac was substituted at half-time as Bosnia and Herzegovina won 2-1 in Estonia.

There are currently mixed reports as to whether the move was tactical or in response to an injury. Thursday’s press conference with Arsene Wenger may well be the first opportunity to get clarity on that.

Shkodran Mustafi already limped out of Germany’s 5-1 win over Azerbaijan earlier in the international break, and with Laurent Koscielny missing the Gameweek 7 victory over Brighton with ongoing Achilles problems, an already-stretched Gunners’ defence can barely afford to lose Kolasinac.

Rob Holding is already looking highly likely to start the weekend trip to Watford, but Arsenal’s defensive resources are thin enough that should the big Bosnian be injured, Wenger might have to change formation, with Nacho Monreal moving to left-back in a flat back four.

Liverpool centre-half Ragnar Klavan started and finished the match for Estonia, with Asmir Begovic doing likewise for the visitors, while Muhamed Besic was an unused sub.

Key assets rack up the minutes and miles

The traditional end to an international break brings with it the guessing game of who might miss out domestically thanks to their gruelling schedule for their countries.

Top of the list might well be City centre-half Nicolas Otamendi, who played 180 minutes for Argentina, including last night’s 3-1 win in Ecuador – at altitude – which confirmed La Albiceleste’s place in Russia. However, with Vincent Kompany still to return to full fitness, Guardiola may not have the defensive options to preserve Otamendi.

Man United back-up keeper Sergio Romero also put in a full shift, while his team-mate Antonio Valencia had the night off as he was suspended for the hosts. Despite a long-haul flight, that should strengthen his chances of starting at Anfield in the early kick-off.

He will likely face Liverpool stars Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino, who were both involved in the Brazil win, the former playing 87 minutes before being replaced by the latter.

The pair now appear likely to start against United now that Sadio Mane has been ruled out for up to six weeks with a hamstring injury.

City midfielder Fernandinho was given eight minutes at the end of the match, while team-mate Danilo was an unused sub and club-mate Claudio Bravo played the full 90 minutes in the Chile goal.

Among the other much-travelled South and Central Americans, West Brom’s Salomon Rondon started and finished Venezuela’s 1-0 win in Paraguay, David Ospina and Davinson Sánchez did likewise as Colombia drew 1-1 in Peru, but West Ham striker Chicharito had the night off as a much-changed Mexico lost 3-2 in Honduras.

Elsewhere…

Olivier Giroud started, finished and scored as France confirmed their World Cup finals place with a 2-1 win over Belarus.

Hugo Lloris also played the full match, Moussa Sissoko was given a 12-minute run-out from the bench, while Alexandre Lacazette was an unused sub.

Holland beat Sweden 2-0, but it wasn’t enough to stave off their World Cup elimination.

Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Aké and Daley Blind played the full 90, while Georginio Wijnaldum was given 71 minutes before being replaced by Davy Klaasen, with Daryl Janmaat coming on at the same time.

Maarten Stekelenburg and Wesley Hoedt watched from the bench.

Portugal consigned Switzerland to the play-offs with a 2-0 win in which Man City’s Bernardo Silva provided an assist.

José Fonte, Cédric Soares and Silva played the full match, while Swansea City’s Renato Sanches was an unused sub. Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri completed 90 minutes for the Swiss.

Brighton keeper Mat Ryan started and Huddersfield’s Aaron Mooy came on after 11 minutes as Australia beat Syria 2-1 to confirm their place in a play-off with Peru for a place at Russia 2017.

DeAndre Yedlin played 90 minutes, but Geoff Cameron stayed on the bench, as the United States crashed out of next year’s finals following a shock 2-1 loss in Trinidad and Tobago.

Spurs’ Son Heung-min scored a penalty and played 80 minutes of South Korea’s 3-1 friendly loss to Morocco. That offers some reassurance to Ben Davies’ owners concerned that Mauricio Pochettino may again elect to deploy Son at left wing-back, resting the Welshman with the midweek tie with Real Madrid in mind.

Finally, Palace’s Chung-long Lee played the full 90, though Swansea City’s Ki Sung-yeung was afforded just 28 minutes following his recent injury.

Ghana won 3-0 in Saudi Arabia in another friendly, with Leicester City’s Daniel Amartey captaining the visitors.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Eden Hazard

Eden Hazard is looking back to his best. He faces the Premier League's worst team this weekend, ahead of an excellent run for Chelsea.

On penalties and may even have a central attacking role in Morata's absence.

Yet his ownership is tiny and many wildcarders are ignoring him?

Are you tempted by Hazard, or is his 10.5 price tag simply too much?

What would it take for you to draft him in - a hattrick against Palace?

I was pretty set on him since yesterday. Waking up today to find he scored a brace just backed up my plan

Looks an incredible differential.. I admit I find myself questioning why he's not in my wildcard team.

This is the perfect time to get him in, who is in your midfield instead? He's coming into good form, is low owned, has a great run of fixtures for about the next 21 weeks, is on penalties, and the only other Chelsea player capable of matching his output is injured.

I'm taking a -4 to swap Sanchez (don't ask) out for Hazard.

Sanchez was an earlier WC punt that never did really take off. Hazard is on pens, is captain-able, has the fixtures, and has been priced reasonably.

As you've mentioned before Jonty, unless Hazard does something very special the value at Chelsea is with Morata and [possibly] Fab atm. Think I lose too much elsewhere and he doesn't quite fit for me.

I reluctantly had him in my wildcard team. Feeling a bit more confident about it after last night, though I'm not sure I should be after a brace against Cyprus in a dead rubber game.

The plan is Morata for Jesus and Salah for Hazard in a couple of weeks.

Certainly tempted, but the inclusion of Hazard can't be considered in isolation. A partner needs to be considered.

For example. I currently have Morata and Brady (10.3 + 5.5) Morata to Jesus (who also scored a brace) would retain the Brady partnership. If I were to bring in Hazard, who would be his 5.5 partner – Joselu? Which may or may not be a better partnership.

Lots to consider. But I am certainly tempted.

The issue for me is the cheaper alternatives - Eriksen managed 218 in 3159 minutes last season - he is on 45 from 8 games already. Coutinho with 171 points from only 2228 minutes last season is 9.0. He already has 25 points from 3 starts. Hazard gained an impressive 224 points last season, but Chelsea look worse off this season with the extra European football and better investment from most of their competitors, and I'm not confident that he will outscore either Coutinho or Eriksen, or Salah for that matter.

Very good points. I often say that we forget the price hikes when considering the super-premium players. Unless you are going to regularly captain Hazard then is he really worth over a million more than the likes of Alli, Salah, Coutinho, and nearly a million more than Eriksen?

That said, his fixtures look good and he is in my WC draft. I can always downgrade.

Agree on the good point front. But: fixtures+ownership+no morata=very very tempting esp for the next 3.

owning Hazard means downgrading to eriksen/pool mid is very easy once their fixtures shift. upgrading to hazard is trickier in one shot if your budget is maxed and my guess is many of our budgets are maxed with all the premium FWDs knocking em in.

Really good point of this season chelsea. If first quarter of season is any indication, its Manchester clubs who look stronger than them now..Will bet good money on Coutinho/Salah + Jones giving more points than Hazard + 4.5mn defender long term

      • 9 Years

For me, it's likely to be either Haz and Duffy (or similar 4.5m def), or Azpi and Silva.

The first option is tempting given Hazard's differential appeal and the fact that he looks a better captain choice than anyone else in gameweek 10 (Chelsea have Bournemouth away, whereas City are away at West Brom and Spurs play United). However, I'll probably plump for the latter as I'm not convinced that he's fully up to speed just yet.

Could be a differential if the points come yes... But still a risk, when you can have you money on Kane, Kaku in front.. Regulars in mid like Salah,Couti,Mikhi, Silva who cost less.. And wing backs bringing a lot of points for much less also.. Sanchez and him need to start scoring before coming back in contention

He's on my watchlist but I want to see some PL form first. He offered little against City last time out. I know he has Palace next but even they are a step up from Cyprus. Plus it is at Selhurst Park and Hazard's away form has never been reliable.

Also I want to see how Chelsea line up without Morata (if they are). The assumption is that Batshuayi will start, but when Costa was unavailable last year Conte went without a striker and played Hazard, Pedro, and Willian. I think the absence of Morata could limit Hazard's points potential so I could maybe wait until he returns.

I've already wildcarded (don't ask). I'm looking at shipping out Mkhi for a city midfielder this week and don't want a -8 to get Hazard in too (would need to ship out Kolasinac to afford him). Hoping to wait a week and take a -4 if he hits form v Palace. He would replace Alli who has a nice fixture this week before the Liverpool and United so that seems the ideal time to make the change.

      Dilemma:
      Alonso 7.0 + Sterling 7.9 + Silva 8.5 = 23.4ml
      Jones 5.2 + Sterling 7.9 + Hazard 10.5 = 23.6ml

Both options allow Jesus to Aguero ITB in the future.

Frankly I see A outscoring B over the next 6 though.

If you're on à WC now it's pretty tempting to get him and downgrade after a few games if he disappoints.

But I need a -8 to get him in now and be happy with my team, so I will pass. + despite the obvious penalty bonus, the Chelsea attacker I want long term is Morata. So if he plays vs Roma and looks good, or if everything points to him. Ring ready vs Watford, it's Morata I'll bring in next week, not Hazard.

To my mind he's just a fantastically risk-free pick.

If he strikes form you have a top class, captainable FPL pick with great fixtures as a serious differential. You also know that any of your rivals who want him in will probably have to change the structure of their team to get him.

If he doesn't hit form? Easy downgrade in a few weeks. Maybe bring in a Liverpool mid when their fixtures improve and free up cash to bring Lukaku back at the same time.

      Easy.

Is nobody taking a chance on Batshuayi whilst Morata is out? Playing Hazard up top against City made no difference, and given a chance v Palace I fancy him to get a goal or two. The question is, will Conte give him that chance? I'm going to chance it as a differential this weekend.

Antonio + Mkhi to Hazard + Sterling? No other City or Chelsea coverage. Hazards a punt, but if it doesn't work out I'm happy to use him as a bank to upgrade Tammy to Aguero once he's back.

Antonio has good fun of fixtures, still ok to lose him now?

His fixtures aren't bad, nor are his underlying stats, but he has his share of problems.

West Ham aren't exactly firing, and there's a lot of competition for those front 4 spots. Arnautovic and Ayew are both capable of playing Antonio's position, and I wouldn't be happy owning him if he was shunted back to a wingback role.

His price point is also a bit awkward, there aren't many players I could switch him for with just one trade.

Obviously would be happy if he fired, but it's a big 'if', and Hazard would be just as good as a differential with none of the drawbacks.

Dont like the vardy pick.. People are overrating him. I know he has scored a couple of.goals, but the goals have not been a fair reflection of his nor leicesters performance. Take his goal against Liverpool goal for instance. Huge error from the GK and he got a free header in front of an empty goal.

Aguero lost around 20% in ownership and he only fell by 0.1m. So many took him out on before that first price drop. Gutted since I wanted him to drop again.

He will prolly drop again as he wont feature in the next two BPL games regardless of being in »light training«. Risking him for two pretty straight forward home games is mental as you cant recover from a fractured rib (fully) in such a short matter of time. You can read about it online. Usually takes at least 6 weeks from injury date.
