Scout Notes – Vardy Subdued In Stalemate

Friday’s early kick-off is a predictably sparse affair for Fantasy managers, with modest returns on offer as West Ham and Leicester City play out a 1-1 stalemate.

Vardy stifled once again

Jamie Vardy went into the London Stadium encounter as the top owned asset on show, part of 14% of squads. He had produced just a single return – a goal in Gameweek 10 against Everton – in his previous six outings.

Tonight’s assist for Marc Albrighton’s opener provided little compensation for his owners. The striker mustered just one shot on goal and has now totalled only five efforts from his last four appearances since the arrival of manager Claude Puel.

Those statistics will do little to slow further sales, with Vardy’s ownership dropping by 118,000+ over those previous four Gameweeks. More than 59,000 moved Vardy on ahead of tonight’s deadline.

Riyad Mahrez also disappointed. The Algerian had produced two goals and three assists from his previous five outings. While he sparkled in the early stages, he cut a disgruntled figure when withdrawn on 69 minutes by Puel.

It perhaps gives an indication of Demarai Gray‘s progress under Puel that he remained on the pitch while Mahrez was hooked. Gray was eventually replaced in stoppage time. The 5.3 option has played 90 minutes in three of his four matches under Puel, while Mahrez has been replaced early in three of four.

At the back, it’s now just one clean sheet in six for Leicester, with Spurs their next opponent in Gameweek 14 on Tuesday.

Lanzini the stand-out Hammer

Manuel Lanzini was perhaps the most notable Fantasy performer for the home side.

He created five chances on the night and, along with left-back Aaron Cresswell, monopolised many of West Ham’s set-pieces.

Lanzini provided the crossed corner for Cheikhou Kouyate’s equaliser, having previously supplied a string of free-kick deliveries.

The Argentine picked up two bonus points along with his assist to score eight on the night.

However, priced at 6.8, Fantasy interest in the playmaker is likely to remain muted unless the Hammers can be transformed as an attacking force.

Interestingly, David Moyes deployed 4.4 defender Arthur Masuaku on the left-flank in front of Cresswell. But for all his pace and industry, the Frenchman’s final ball lacked quality.

With Michail Antonio back in training, Moyes will surely shake up his attack to accommodate the powerful winger, and Masuaku is the most likely to make way. That change could even be in place for the Gameweek 14 trip to Everton.

Marko Arnautovic is an early doubt for that encounter. He suffered a knock to his knee and was finally withdrawn on 69 minutes. Moyes brought us this on the setback post-match…

“He complained before, if you noticed he got a kick – or an injury – just before half time, and I was annoyed he kept limping around. You need a foghorn here on the touchline to hear anybody, but i wanted him to keep going and he did. He seemed okay at half time but I think at the end it’s just caught up on him, hopefully it’s not too severe I think he should be okay.”

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Chelsea v the world

Ok, not quite the world, but Chelsea’s priciest players are certainly going to have to prove they are worth their valuation ahead of one of the kindest runs of games any Premier League side has experienced.

Which Chelsea players do you own and which do you plan to own?

Is a pricey triple up of a Chelsea defender, Hazard and Morata viable?

Or can cheaper options from other teams offer more value?

To get the discussion started here’s how some of their players stack up against the rest of the FPL world.

    Alonso and Azpilicueta

At 6.9 and 6.8 respectively this pair will certainly have to prove their value.

Arguably in terms of total score they are doing that. Cesar ‘Dave’ Azpilicueta is the top defender on 73 and Alonso is not too far behind with 60.

Alonso is the top ranked defender for goals, while Azpilicueta is top for assists and bonus.

But when it comes to value over the season Alonso lags behind, with 18 defenders offering better value (according to FPL’s season form table). Azpilicueta fares better in fourth place.

It looks like in terms of bang for your buck Dave may just edge this, with only Burnley defenders offering better value so far. As for Alonso currently a raft of players – including Otamendi and Kolasinac offer better value.

    Verdict: Dave beats the world

    Hazard

Due to missing the opening few matches I've Instead turned to FPL’s season (form) table to look at Hazard. Here he does well even with his hefty 10.6 price tag. Only Salah among similar priced midfielders offers more bang for your buck. Hazard is currently offering better value than the City mids. This is crucial for those considering getting in the Chelsea man.

Verdict: Only Salah can beat Hazard for midfield heavyweight value

    Morata

To prove his 10.5 worth Morata has to prove he offers more points per pound than other premium priced strikers.

Looking at season form he passes this test admirably, ranked fourth, with only budget options Abraham, Niasse and Diouf proving better value.

Lukaku is down in down in 11th. This is crucial as many Lukaku owners are looking at making the swap to Morata this week.

And what of the City strikers? Sadly for their owners there are 14 better value strikers than Jesus and 16 better value forwards than Aguero.

Verdict: Morata offers greater value than Lukaku and the City forwards.

I have Hazard since 5 GWs now and brought Morata in before the deadline
I think Chelsea will be scoring plenty of goals over the next few fixtures and these 2 must be involved somehow in them

Thought about Azpi as well but then that would be an overkill by investing about 28 million on 3 players from the same team

I'm getting Hazard and Morata, the only question is for who. I have Sterling and Eriksen, both not doing as well as they should. I think I will be dropping Lukaku to afford the move

I own Morata and somehow managed to end up with Fabregas. May sell Kane or Lukaku to strengthen my team overall which would mean a Chelsea defender.

Don’t like two attacking assets from one team, so no Hazard and Morata double up for me (Fabregas was a filler fir Mkhi at the time and will move on)

Really not sure, great price but I want Silva, Salah, Pogba, Gross as my playing mids and Fabregas doesn’t fit in. At best Fabregas is a 4th mid but players like Gross are cheaper, nailed and scoring more points

Currently have Azpi (but would prefer Alonso) and Morata

Will bring in a third one. Probably Hazard (for Sterling), eventhough I also considered adding Alonso... but think I wont double up on the most expensive defs in the game - could be gold but I would have murder thoughts every time Chelsea concedes the odd goal.

I think given his bonus and assists Azpi may just be the better- if unsexier - option.

Alonso's goals look spectacular but there's nothing like the raw dullard power of quietly racking up passing and interception stats. 🙂

I'm definitely making the Lukaku to Morata swap ahead of GWK 14, barring injury. Makes sense in terms of form, fixtures and value.

I can also afford to get in Azpilicueta for a hit or as my GWK 15 transfer. Currently minded to do that.

Obviously I want Hazard but it would require another hit or two to get him in soon. I think I can wait. Alot hinges on how the City mids continue to stack up against him. Currently I'm minded to somehow swap him for David Silva, as while the Spaniard is a great steady scorer, Hazard offers me a captaincy option and a player who is far more explosive.

So while not urgent I am keeping a close eye on finding another 2m somewhere and making that Silva Hazard upgrade. The good thing about Silva though is that he is a good option so happy to keep too.

Just Morata and Alonso for me. Adding Hazard would mean c.30% of team value invested in Chelsea. One bad game and the GW is ruined.

I'm in the same boat. While each of the 4 are great a value I individually, having Hazard and Morata is two many eggs in the one basket (as Alonso + Azpi double up). Alonso + Morata for me

It's a classic Coleman v Baines style argument.

Both Azpi and Alonso are great options

But Dave beats Alonso for total points, bonus and assists.

Alonso has the greater goal threat but if both play regularly it'll be Dave who prevails as he has more routes to points.

He had more routes to points last year too, yet we saw the result.

You are basing your view on what has happened not what is likely to happen going forward. This is classic points chasing. If azpi was 1m cheaper it would be a close call but with both the same price it isn't even close.

The excitement and thrill of seeing an Alonso goal go in, compared to the quiet satisfaction of seeing (more) assists from Dave. I’m going the latter this season now, at least for my blood pressure’s sake.

In my opinion, Morata is the one to have. I simply do not see value in other forwards with the same price of him.

Manchester United's attacking style and the fact that Ibrahimovic is back are the two reasons that make me out of Lukaku.

Aguero and Gabriel Jesus, although great players, in a team with an exceptional attacking style for us fantasy managers, are simply too expensive for me to be worried about their inevitable rotation in this Christmas period.

It's just price.. tough to afford the big defs and hazard and a mid value (Zaha, gross, rich) may not outscore say pogba and couts... so many great value mids

Sitting pretty on Hazard and Morata is coming in for Lukaku before his price rises.

That leaves me 1.5m itb, only way to get defensive cover is Ota to Alpi but I wanna see how Ota does in the next 2 games before I do that move.

Hazard needs to remain consistent over the next 4 games though otherwise Pogba or Coutinho will come in to free up funds (probably for Alpi)

Morata close to essential imo. The rest are not so much

Saved my FT this week so I can go all-in for the upcoming run. Already have Morata, am doing Jesus/Richarlison/Jones > DCL/Hazard/Azpi or Alonso for a hit.

Variable is the defender dilemma - honestly, I was leaning towards Alonso because my main mini-league rival had Azpi, but now I find out he's ditched him I may have to jump on the Dave Train and punish him.

Alonso, Haz, Morata for sure. Such differentials too. Everything points towards points. Doesn’t matter if it takes you 2-3 gameweeks to do the surgery either as their run of fixtures is so long. I have Azpi & Morata atm so I’m safe in the knowledge I can sort of cover Hazards points but I’m looking at Sterling>Hazard funded by downgrading Vertogen to a 4.5 and Calum Wilson to Niasse

Very doable actually, just looked at the team I would be left with if I did
        Apzi>Alonso (straight swap)
        Vert>Dunk
        Callum-Wilson>Niasse
        Sterling>Hazard

Still leaves me with a very strong team:

        Elliot Speroni
        Alonso Daniels Dann Mee Dunk
        Hazard Salah Sane Richarlison RLC
        Kane Morata Niasse

Got Morata in last week and captained against Brom.

Saved two free this week to turn Eriksen and Davies into Hazard and a second Burnely def and to create funds for Jones to Christensen the week after.

These are the best set of fixtures Ive ever seen in FPL, Id have 6 or 7 Chelse if it was possible.

Other thing is Im going to captain Hazard almost every week, his ownership is less than 6%, could be a massive climb up the rankings if he does well.

The way I see it Chelseas fixtures is simply 'too easy' for Azpi to collect those BPS. Too many matches where Chelsea should win 3-0 or 4-0 where he will miss out.

Hazard is just a great (C) option! I would (C) him over Morata every week if i had both. Currently not looking at the Chelsea defenders, but if either of Kane or Agüero blanks I might just do one of them -> Morata.

I still need to see more from hazard before I'm convinced I need to restructure my team to get him in. It would mean losing Kane who also has a good run of fixtures coming up.

I think the love for hazard maybe a knee-jerk coming off the WBA thrashing. 2 goals and an assist against a team that was clearly low on confidence and capability.

In the previous 5 games MCI WAT CP BOU MUN he only had 1 goal and 1 assist.

Coutinho has the same stats 3 goals and 2 assists also over 6 games however he's 1.8 cheaper and might be easier to get in without sacrificing a premium striker.

Have Azpi and Hazard. Hazard going nowhere, but tempted to take first hits of the season to do Azpi and Lukaku to Mee and Morata as this will also allow Chopou-Moting to Salah upgrade.

Sound investment? Or needless musical chairs?

It would be great to also compare hazard vs premium forwards? For me it is whether i do couthino + Kane or Hazard + 10/11m forward (e.g. Jesus) as I already have Morata !?

Currently have Azpi, Hazard and Morata.

All things being equal I would probably pick Alonso over Azpi now that they're the same price and hope that he's just had a slow start to the season. The potential reward seems high enough to justify it.

Of Hazard and Morata I think Hazard is the better individual pick, especially as he has two excellent home games after the Liverpool match. Having Haz as a differential captain pick for this run of fixtures strikes me as an easy way to make ground, especially given the current paucity of reliable captaincy options.

However, Morata makes more sense than Hazard from a structural point of view as there are simply fewer options in his position. It would be a lot easier to build a strong team without Hazard than without Morata imo.

So, basically, you can't go wrong with any of them. Add in the fact that they appear to be less exposed to rotation than some key players at other clubs and I can't think if anywhere else I'd sooner spend big money.

Barring injury to Hazard and unless Eriksen runs riot today, i will be making the switch from Eriksen to Hazard tonight. Already have Morata up top alongside Kane. Chelsea Defence is just too dear for me

Is a pricey triple up of a Chelsea defender, Hazard and Morata viable?

Im planning -8 to do this

      Vardy, to Niasse
      Van dijk to Alonso
      Richarlison to Gross (for funds)
      Sterling to Hazard.

I’ve already had Morata. Think I can’t afford Hazard or even one of Azpi/Alonso.

Is it too risky to go with Morata only? Any thoughts will be appreciates.

      Thanks!

I bought Morata for £10m so he is easy to keep. I went Alonso on Wildcard and think he is coming up for some serious points, he is easy to downgrade if need be. Might steer clear of Hazard for the time being as I can't afford.

i have morata and am looking to get hazard in this week. would love alonso or dave but budget is nowhere near that. will probably go for christensen. he seems to be starting and will get the same clean sheet points albeit without the attacking returns and my bench is good enough to cover for a non start.

Who would you get rid of for Hazard - Richarlison or Gross? Currently leaning towards keeping Gross for the next 3, then reassessing when Richarlison's fixtures start to ease.

    B)
    Elliot, Speroni
    Azpi, Daniels, Mustafi, Duffy, Mee
    Salah, Sane, STERLING, Richarlison, GROSS

      morata for free for sure

his only slight downside is conte could be tempted to play hazard and willian midweek like in ucl to give morata a rest but i doubt it

    How’s this for a plan

    GW14: Eriksen & Abraham > Hazard & DCL (2 FTs)
    GW15: DCL > Niasse (1 FT)

Is this okay or are there any other ideas that I should be considering

    Any ideas would be welcomed

Glad I held fire on swapping out Sterling for Pogba and did a dullard clean up of Hunemei to a 4.5 playing defender

      Looks profitable!

Pretty awkward fixtures though. But yeah, I'd prefer Pogba over Lukaku

Pretty much by question above. Alonso gives me a much better balance throughout my team and will only cost (-4)
