Dugout Discussion – Newcastle vs Man City

The penultimate match of Gameweek 20 gets underway at this evening as Newcastle United welcome league leaders Manchester City to St James’ Park.

Up against a defence with just a single clean sheet in 15 attempts, Pep Guardiola’s side boast three of the top ten captains for this round of fixtures.

Significantly Sergio Aguero – their most backed armband pick (6.2%) – is again chosen to lead the line and makes his fourth successive Premier League start. Gabriel Jesus warms the bench yet again, then.

Kevin De Bruyne (4.2%) and Raheem Sterling (3.1%) are also handed starts, though both have some way to go to match Harry Kane’s 17-point haul at home to Southampton yesterday.

Nonetheless, the pair arrive on Tyneside in fine form. De Bruyne has three goals and two assists in City’s previous six, with three sets of 10+ points hauls during that run.

Meanwhile, Sterling – the top target in midfield for Gameweek 20, with over 173,00 new owners – has served up 34 points in three, courtesy of three goals and a trio of assists.

David Silva’s ongoing personal issues means he misses out for the second time in three matches, however, with Ilkay Gundogan partnering De Bruyne in the centre of the park in his absence. Leroy Sane is also on the timber despite his early withdrawal against Bournemouth last time out – he’s now started just four of the last seven Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The same players keep scoring - feels like the attack options are becoming pretty straightforward.

    Kane Sterling Salah
    1 other City
    1-2 other Liverpool
Chelsea Spurs and United players fighting for the other 1-2 spots.

Yep, jumping on those ships early was crucial for me. I remember regretting my decision to choose Sterling over Sané back in the day, it turned out to be one of the best ones I've made.

A month ago it seemed like Silva, Sterling, Sane, KDB would be fairly equal in the points - seems a long time ago now.

Whilst you’re on to something, it’s not that simple, you’ve listed three players who are as essential as they come.

But who is your other city player? The rotation is insane...Aguero, Jesus, Sane, KDB, Silva are all viable options.

Same with Liverpool...Coutinho, firmino, even Mane could be an option.

Then you’ve got to find the form players from ‘less obvious’ teams...

      Gross, Zaha, Richarlison, Mooy, etc.

Plus the third striker lottery....Wilson, DLC, Austin, Ahraham, Rooney, Mounie...all looked like they were about to nail down that spot, just to fall off the edge of the planet.

I guess your response is kind of my point - pick 1-2 extra from City and Liverpool and the points should come.

True...it’s just picking the right one...rotation is going to be immense once CL comes back around, I would think all the English teams will be going all out for the CL now the PL is over.

I think people confuse skills with effectiveness. Sterling's movement, work rate, ability to break people down with pace, etc. make him a really effective player - and not just in FPL.

really liked that sterling goal. the way he changed what foot he was going to shoot with. if old sterling had done that, i'd have said he just panicked and got his feet wrong and just threw a leg at it. but this new sterling is proving a lot of people wrong, including me i must admit. he's added brains to his game

Not complaining but it's a shame when players you bought with relatively low ownership end up completely template.

Got Sterling in when he was at 400k ownership, now 1.7m and 75% in top 10k, kind of ruins the fun of your players doing well but maybe thats just me

English football really is on the up I think. Kane possibly best striker in the world, Sterling is becoming a legend. Alli hopefully stones own day will be amazing. And the youth players at our disposal. I am going to say it, within the next five ten years England are going to win a major trophy

I just hope it becomes exciting to watch England play again, at the very least.

I'm oddly optimistic as well. I think it's positive Southgate is manager because he has managed the younger teams so is more willing to give the young 'uns a chance. Finally booted Rooney. Hope he does the same with Hart and the rest that are hanging on.

I can’t see England winning the World Cup in 2018 or 2022, or the 2020 euros.

I agree, but as someone said earlier, if we have a competitive team and play well then that would be a start.

Really really nice finish by Sterling.

    £75m for VVD is madness.

Hope everyone is on for a green arrow this Gameweek.

How many we all aiming to have for the DGW then?

Already have Lloris and Masuaku and plan on taking a -8 for:

Hazard, Morata, Richarlison >> Kane, Son, Lanzini.

That will give me 5 and I will be lining up like this:

    Lloris
    Alonso - Maguire - Masuaku
    Son - Lanzini - Salah - Sterling
    Kane(TC) - Firmino - Rooney

Bench: Elliot - Dunk - Surman - Kenny

    Thoughts?

Sterling was actually sick next to Suarez and Sturridge as well. He was just an assist machine back the.

Aye. Mind you they'll have to be careful doing that in CL later stages.
