Moving Target

Moving Target – Virgil Van Dijk

Liverpool completed the first major signing of the January transfer window, acquiring Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for a club-record fee worth a reported £75 million.

Having signed a long-term contract with the Reds, the Dutch international reckons that his style of play will only improve under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp:

“I am vocal, I am obviously pretty tall, I like to command the defensive line and have the ball as well. I like to play out from the back and be comfortable on the ball. Obviously there is a lot of improvement still to come, but I think the manager can help me with that.

Everybody obviously from a Liverpool perspective knows how he is; how lively he is, how he can make players better and give them confidence as well. I think he can make me a better player and I am just looking forward to working with him.

The History

Van Dijk began his youth career at Willem II before moving to Groningen in 2010 at the age of 19.

He made his professional debut against ADO Den Haag in May 2011 and went on to make 66 appearances for Groningen, registering seven goals and five assists, before completing a move to Celtic in June 2013.

The defender spent two seasons in Scotland, winning two league titles, while he was also named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year in both campaigns.

Van Dijk made 115 appearances in total for Celtic, totaling 15 goals and seven assists. In September 2015, he completed a £13 million move to Southampton.

The Dutchman quickly established himself as one of the leading central defenders in the Premier League and finished his time at St Mary’s having played 80 times in all competitions, scoring seven goals.

Van Dijk represented Holland at U19 and U21 levels, making four appearances, before making his senior debut against Kazakhstan in October 2015.

The defender has played 16 times for his country, although he has yet to score.

The Prospects

Having struggled defensively for a number of seasons, Liverpool will hope that Van Dijk’s arrival at Anfield will provide more solidity at the back.

Last season they conceded 42 goals, 16 more than Tottenham Hotspur, who boasted the most resilient defence, while they shipped 50 goals in 2015/16.

This time around, the Merseysiders have been strong at home defensively, conceding just four goals.

But they have shipped 21 goals on their travels – a tally better than just three other sides.

Van Dijk will bring a number of different qualities to the Reds defence, with his presence in the air and ability to produce clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) vital for Klopp’s rearguard.

Looking into the Opta stats, he was the top-ranked defender for successful headers in his only full season for the Saints in 2015/16 – a total of 158 was at least 36 more than any backline option. In terms of CBI, he placed fourth overall with 379.

His campaign was cut short by injury the following year, with the Dutchman sidelined for the final 16 matches of 2016/17. Yet over those first 22 Gameweeks, Van Dijk excelled in the air – once again, he was the number one defender for successful headers (95) over that period and ranked tenth for CBI, with 211.

The same applies to this season. Handed a first start in Gameweek 7, the six-foot-four centre-half remained on the Saints’ teamsheet for every match up until Gameweek 17 – during that run, both his totals of 59 successful headers and 119 CBI were more than any defender.

Van Dijk’s ball-winning ability will also help improve Liverpool at the back – over these featured time frames, he registered successful tackle rates of 86.8%, 84.8% and 91.7%.

He is also extremely comfortable on the ball and can help initiate attacks from the back with his impressive passing range.

The Dutchman’s ability to switch play with his long cross-field passes could provide a new dimension to the Liverpool attack, potentially getting the ball to wide men Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane with more space to operate in.

Indeed, his long-pass accuracy was the best of any defender in the Premier League last season and far superior to any of the other central defensive options available to Klopp.

One of the biggest failings with the Liverpool defence in recent seasons has been the number of individual errors. But Van Dijk is one of only four centre-backs to play over 60 Premier League matches over the past three seasons without making a single error leading to a goal.

Clearly, then, there are a number of facets to his game that can help the new arrival claim bonus points when Liverpool keep a clean sheet, thanks to his suitability to the Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points System.

The Dutch international’s goal threat is also impressive. He has a strong scoring record throughout his career, with that aerial ability at set-pieces and his powerful long-range shooting, both from direct free-kicks and open-play, making Van Dijk a real threat.

Analysing his stats over the periods mentioned above once again showcases Van Dijk’s talents.

In 2015/16, he sat eighth among defenders for both total attempts (29) and efforts in the box. Over Gameweek 1-22 in 2016/17, he placed tenth for shots (17) and fifth for efforts on target (12), while this season, he came in fifth for shots (11) and fourth for efforts in the area (10) during his run of starts over Gameweek 7-17.

Having started the season priced at 5.5 in FPL, van Dijk is now available for 5.4 –identical to his expected defensive partner, Joel Matip, with the much-maligned Dejan Lovren (5.3) as well as Ragnar Klavan (4.4) likely to offer back-up.

Although the Reds’ full-backs are cheaper, there’s too much uncertainty over the right-back berth, while the imminent return of Alberto Moreno will put pressure on Andrew Robertson’s starting role on the left.

Assessing the upcoming fixtures, home encounters against Man City and Spurs in the next four Gameweeks is likely to deter many from considering the Reds’ rearguard, with Klopp’s key attackers still the main focal point for Fantasy managers.

Nonetheless, it’s worth bearing in mind that since their chastening 4-1 loss to Spurs back in Gameweek 9, Klopp’s side have conceded just nine times in 13 league outings – the third best record in the league.

If Van Dijk’s arrival enhances that resilience further, his points potential at both ends of the pitch could certainly help him emerge as one to watch for our five-man defences, particularly when the schedule smiles in his favour from Gameweek 27 onwards.

0.4m off Rooney > Aguero, who should I sacrafic?

Only got Son & Arnautovic in for their doubles but they have great fixtures, may keep for a bit. Leaning to Richarlison atm:

    Pope | Elliot
    Alonso | Schindler | Kenny | Masuaku | Dunk
    Salah | Sterling | Son | Arnautovic | Richarlison
    Kane | Rooney | Quaner

Obviously will wait until nearer the GW.

Think vvd might be a good fantasy acquisition if Liverpool get a new keeper - no matter how good he is, neither mignolet or karius are prone to a howler

It's not that important. Look at all of Lloris' howlers and Spurs' overall defensive record is still gold.

With the Free Hit chip effectively being a 1 week wildcard - is there more merit this season to doing a WC over the next few weeks than in any other season?

Depends because you use the WC week before big double game week with a view to BB or TC if you play FH you don't have that option.

Fellow Kane TCers - what would you take now if offered for the gameweek?

I think if someone said I could have 15 points I’d settle for that now and not gamble it.

Yes it would be lovely if he went insane and banged in two more hat tricks, but realistically a couple of goals and a few bonus is a decent return for the chip for my money.

      more frustrating than anything.
Bad enough with the spectre of rotation.
DGW has actually been an unwelcome problem.
Curious how many people have got through with fielding 11 players each week since GW16, set up for DGW and NOT had to take at least 1 hit.
Made it to GW21, took a -4 and still ended up with 9 players.
Ended up taking a -8 this week as deadline pressure (woke up 11,20, realized deadline 11,30, 2 transfers 11,29)and a heavy New Year made me forget i had already done 2 FTs

It was the last match ever played there before it was demolished. I used to work at the Jag and they held a competition for who could play in the match. I was first reserve drawn out (with the correct answers) and got in because someone dropped out. We won 3-1. Happy days.

I felt very lucky and enjoyed it immensely.
What slightly surprised me was that that pitch didn't seem quite flat ... very slightly domed, a bit like a gigantic crown-green bowls green. For drainage?

I know about that game. A couple of the lads on Sky Blues Talk were involved.
My grandfather worked at the Jag in the 70s in the cutting room - where they used to do all the leather for the seats etc.

I've no problem with the festive football season. My issue is with 2 games in 3 days. That's ridiculous. A 2 days rest should be a minimum for all teams. Arrange the TV schedule around that

Found it exhausting all season. Vowed I wouldn’t play this year after good finish last year but spending hours on research, spreadsheets etc to do so.
Week before GW1 deadline my son sent me his team for review. Had no idea of summer txfrs nor new prices so logged in to review sons team as it seemed best way was to select and compose fake team. Then I couldn’t find a way to cancel my team. Not wanting to wreck my average and not one to quit i decided to give it another season. Scores have been a disaster on the whole - I’ve just pulled out of 2 million. As a result I’ve put in more work than last year but had more GW negative mood swings, rebound team surgery and all for more frustration. Would have likely had more points if I’d launched the team as a ghost ship!

Worse still - after taking on my advice my sons team flew out of the blocks and remains 100pts ahead of mine!

Just hoping the New Year brings a change of fortune!

there is certainly a happy middle ground between the start of the seasons 3/4 slow burning game weeks followed by a TWO WEEK international break again and again... and the absolute glut of festive fixtures.

I really don't see why one can't be removed and added in midweek somewhere near the start or end

spurs playing 3 times in 6 days, with nothing to do with europe or reaching a cup final, is genuine insanity

      Its exhausting.

Tell you what though these modern managers like Guardiola live in a post-fact reality. Whining on about "killing" the players. The only pundit who has no time for it seems to be Souness.

I looked up the fixtures for the 1983-84 Treble winning Liverpool season he played in. He regularly played 55-59 games a season in the 80s. Played 61 in 1983-84.

      December-Jan '83-'84
      Liverpool played 15 games.

      December
      3rd League
      10th League
      17th League
      20th League Cup
      22nd League Cup
      26th League
      27th League (NO REST DAY!!)
      31st League
      January
      2nd League
      6th FA Cup
      14th League
      17th League
      20th League
      25th League Cup
      29th FA Cup
      February
      1st League
      Etc
      Etc

I think the elephants in the room are the pointless league stage matches of the Champuons League where tin-pot teams from Outer-Mongolia clog up the fixture list.

Could saving your WC to be active for GW38 be a smart idea? Would be like having a 2nd Free-Hit Chip or should it be used to get your team looking strong for the DGW's at the end of the season?

@CarpeDiem, I believe @Sidney_Will was just Comparing a gw38-Wildcard to a FH; because you’d only have your new team for 1 week(cause season end)...
Also, I think it’s absurd to call a ‘Last Chance WC’ an “absolute waste” lol! ...Guarantee that many a mini-league has been WON by a well-used ‘38special’! (Don’t think there was a WC in play, but last season’s Overall FPL Winner moved into 1st place AFTER gw38, and only won by a few pts.)

Don't think Free Hit chip is a waste at all. Partly because there have been plenty of times when I used my WC and wished I could have my old team back the following week when it doesn't pan out very well. That has happened too many times.

If you get a player for a hit (RLC>Arnie in that situation) and he will get much more ponts than RLC (or a player who would autosub RLC - Holgate in that situation) lets say 10 pts but next week you will bench a player for Anire who would get a haul (and if not RLC>Arnie move would play) plus Arnie blank does it mean thta hit this week was a mistake?

So I carried on reading the article and Mark Ogden (Senior Football Writer at ESPN) and in his team 2017 team of the year he didn't have Salah. I realise that Salah has only had half a year but surely he's a better pick than Sane or Pogba!

I really can’t see him blanking if he does play. I know he has many times this season

Always a chance but like a poker player he goes all in with the best odds you can get.Doesnt get any better than Swansea and West Ham after two hat tricks and little rotation threat.

            Share my pain today....
Seasoned player and subscriber here. Nursed all chips to Dec and a 70k placing. Set my team for Spurs/West Ham and January.
Played WC and have today realised I misread the dates thinking WC1 ran out 31 Jan. So I have completely lost WC1 and have played WC2 instead.

I think I'll throw myself to the sharks.

Never done anything like this before. I just read the rules at the start and didn't revisit.
I'll just have to play my way in very very carefully!
