Dugout Discussion – Wednesday

The penultimate fixture of the packed festive schedule gets underway at 7.45pm as Arsenal and Chelsea go head-to-head at the Emirates.

For the hosts, Alexis Sanchez has upped his output in recent weeks – after a slow start to the season, last term’s top scoring player in Fantasy Premier League has delivered points in seven of his last 10 league appearances.

That form suggest that the Chilean is likely to pose the main danger to a defence that’s conceded just four times in their previous 11.

Nonetheless, it’s Alexandre Lacazette who is the Gunners’ most captained player for Gameweek 22, handed the armband by 2.02%.

The Frenchman has been a consistent source of points at home, producing a goal or assist in seven of his 10 appearances, but he’s struggled for a cutting edge of late and failed to find the net since Gameweek 15.

A return to form could reignite interest in Lacazette ahead of four kind fixtures (bou CRY swa EVE) in as many Gameweeks.

Despite a run of two goals in the last nine Gameweeks, Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata (3.7%) is the top armband pick for this fixture.

That lack of form means that the Spaniard and team-mate Eden Hazard were among the top five most transferred out players for Gameweek 22, sent packing by 243,000+ and 207,000+ respectively.

Hazard has mustered just a single assist in five yet both he and Morata also have some decent fixtures ahead to arrest their recent declines – over the next five Gameweeks, Antonio Conte’s side host Leicester, Bournemouth and West Brom and also make their way to Brighton and Watford.

Encouragingly for Hazard’s owners, he looks set to return to a central role with the visitors rolling out a 3-5-1-1 formation.

The Gunners, meanwhile, welcome back Mesut Ozil from a minor knee problem, though injuries in defence means that Arsene Wenger is forced to field the likes of Calum Chambers, Rob Holding and Ainsley Maitland-Niles in his starting line-up.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I’m torn between these options. Could you share your thoughts please?

    A) Son to Lingard then Gross to Mahrez after Che. (Won’t be able to afford Alonso)

    B) Son to Lingard then Robertson to Alonso. (Won’t be able to afford Mahrez)

Damn just realised I have exact money to do B now so would likely have to do both transfers for a hit this week as both Alonso & Lingard will have risen

Sorry but this is why it was never a good idea to play it in the first place. There is absolutely no chance the changes anyone has made this GW will be as significant as the changes they could have potentially made in a huge blank GW. Early FHC players might as well admit it was a lack of patience rather than anything else, which is fine, but strategically it simply doesn't add up whether you come out slightly in front or not.

I disagree - however, would not want to play the FH in a single double gameweek.

I still have mine and am unsure wether I'll plan for the balnks or maximise a DGW later on with 4+ teams

I see the fhc value on the reduced gw BEFORE the dgw . Usually the later stages of the cup have a few of city utd spurs pool etc and we have those players. I'm expecting to use it to field from the teams still in the gw and not in the cup mid-lower placed teams so I can leave the big hitters where they are and continue to plan for the dgw

    Thinking ahead to gw23 (1FT, 1.5itb):
    1) Gamble on 3 Spurs from gw22 -- meaning save FT?
    2) Alli > KDB
    3) Son > Lingard
    4) Son > Pogba

    Current team
    Fab, Elliot
    Azpi, Ota, Mustafi, Duffy, Ogbonna
    Salah, Sterling, Alli, Son, RLC
    Kane, Depoitre, DCL

Far more interesting option than Smalling and Christensen. Baps magnet like Jones but also has attacking threat and can take a mean free kick. Our defence has been solid at home too and he will only improve it.

Never seem any of those 3 take a free kick, Moreno/TAA took free kicks with Mane, Salah and Firmino on the pitch in the CL qualifiers when Coutinho had that 'back injury' so I'd assume Van Dijk would also jump ahead of them in the que

It's by no means a given that a week before a DGW is best. In fact that's unlikely (although it depends on the state of your team).

You shouldn't be afraid to go early. I'd suggest trying to hold on till GW25/26 though; by then the FAC 3rd and 4th rounds have played and you'll have a better idea about GW31 and DGW34. Also by then the LC Final will be set and you'll know who blanks in GW28, The transfer window will be closed by GW26 as well so you'll know what you are dealing with in terms of squad make-up.

Don't agree. Is it only pear shaped for one week? If not you will simply inherit the team you don't want straight back again. FHC is absolutely ideal to take huge advantage of a GW where lineups are decimated, not just covering a few gaps in your squad because of an injury or two.

It seems like people are only going to learn this lesson once it's happened.

There was lots of debate last year and the week before the big DGW and then using BB was the clear winner. You can also recognise the top FPL players and scouts building or protecting their team value for the big day too.

What ever you do, don’t decouple the B.B. from the DGW, that way madness lies

With the free hit chip, I'm genuinely more excited about a potential big blank GW than by a bumper DGW with bench boost! Nothing better than a starting XI from sh!t teams with no consequences hit-wise or carrying deadwood for weeks afterwards.

No consequence at all when the top teams are all blanking - it's guaranteed points.

Using it in a non-blank week has the risk of results not going the way you expected and losing points.

Would it have been 'sh!t' to have Wilson when he scored a hat-trick against Huddersfield?

This is a myth. The good players in lesser teams will still score points against poor opposition. Free hit team could have the likes of Zaha, Richarlison, Mahrez, Vardy, Arnautovic etc with good fixtures. There's every chance these teams will score heavily in the absence of any tough fixtures against top clubs.

I don't understand - if your City, Chelsea, Arsenal etc. players have a blank you wouldn't want players that have a game on? You don't get more guaranteed points than that.

          Like I just said above
I see the fhc value on the reduced gw BEFORE a dgw . Usually the later stages of the cup have a few of city utd spurs pool etc and we have those players. I'm expecting to use it to field from the teams still in the gw and not in the cup - mid-lower placed teams - so I can leave the big hitters where they are and continue to plan for the dgw

It's actually going to be amazing. I think a lot of people might be surprised how massive this difference is. I envisage some truly ruined squads, literally down to the bare bones of maybe 3 or 4 starting players that GW, wondering how they let his happen after blowing the free hit because Spurs played twice or Kane had a blank.

I can't wait to hand-pick my special one-week-only team in the BGW filled with players I don't want long term but who have ideal form and fixtures. It's basically your own budget friendly Scout Squad picks and if you get a bit lucky the results could be incredible.

            • 8 Years

Exactly this - when calculating the value of the free hit chip, people forget to take into account the complicated process before, during and after a blank GW. Without the free hit, you take hits to field as close to 11 as possible, and then you end up losing points in following GWs by carrying players you don't want long-term. It's not a simple 'my free hit team scored 20 more points than my normal team would've scored therefore it's a success'.

100%. I see all these comments like "I'm 15 points ahead" or (worse) "my real team outscored my free hit team" - this should literally never happen.

The whole value of this chip is that it will save you on a scale we've never had available before. I'm talking potentially 30, 40, 50+ points difference AND the fact you don't have to spend weeks restructuring and creating new problems in your team. It's what it says it is, a complete free hit when you need it most, then get all top players from top clubs straight back in for a DGW. No hits, no value loss, no awkward planning. It's an incredible chip being used frivolously and the lesson will be learned hard by many, who will not make the same mistake next season.

You hit the nail on the head right there. That doesn't mean people can't have an incredible return from the free hit chip otherwise (there have been a couple of success stories already with centuries scored), but those tend to be the exception rather than the rule.

If we had some data it would be so interesting, but I've seen enough examples to know already that it has been horribly misused. Even the teams who scored 100+ don't worry me, because to some extent there had to be an element of luck. They needed their free hit picks to score to get the payoff, and of course some did. We won't have any worries at all because our entire team will be a bonus. Every single point will feel like double points compared to the start players blanking.

Why what happened? Massive score? It doesn't matter. Saving it is the 'right' decision, so anyone who gets lucky it doesn't really matter.

That's more points for those of us that save it then. I wonder whether there'll be pages upon pages of people moaning about all their players having blanks and having to take loads of hits to field something close to 11.

Followed by weeks of people moaning about having to sell some of the players they bought for the blank 😉

I made around 30 points profit i think in GW 10 with FH,some people here have good scores this GW with FH.
Yes you can field 11 on blank GW,lets say i go with 8 players.
Dont think your 3 players will outscore much without big hitters and weaker teams playing each other.
If i remember well last season blank GW was very low scoring.

There is a right time to play it insofar as there will be a time when a lot of your players will have blanks. For most people that will come in a blank GW (if the top teams qualify for the later rounds of the FA Cup), unless you're extremely unlucky with injuries or suspensions, which can happen of course.

Maybe its right time for you, what if you make only 10 points over my team with FH in blank week?
I think you will need 30+ profit to say it was good FH and i cant see that in blank GW without big hitters, maybe i am wrong time will tell.

You are looking at this completely from your own teams perspective.
Every fantasy manager's teams are in different states of flux.
The free hit chip worked superbly for me in gw22.
Mainly due to the fact it was no risk as I had a lot of injuries and players who were rested.
My previous team would have scored 44 (less when including the hits I was considering)
My free hit team scored 86 points.
So you are telling me I should have waited until the FA cup congestion?

I don'y think so would it make me more then 42 points?

Yip, planning for the blanks previously meant using up your free transfers for 3 weeks to load up your bench with dross just to get 9 or10 players starting, then using your transfers to get some balance back in to your team.

FH Chip cuts through that, and because the players will be cheap it gives you the ‘best of the rest’ and a great bench if your some of your 11 starters are rested etc - you will really have the best players in the teams available

For sure. There's been too much focus on the 'poor teams' in a blank but not enough on the fact we will have all the best players available. We will basically be able to pick whatever team we want with the 7 best attackers and four best defenders available plus a decent bench.

The problem is that there are only a limited number of players playing in the gw so everyone will have the likely highest scoring players with a small bit of planning and or a hit or two and the extra few you get will likely be 1 or 2 pt fillers you are hoping for something from

I consider west ham defense as deadwood. As well as Son & Alli. I don't need any of them and happy to keep Salah for gw23.
Its all relative points gained over the current team. If you think you can achieve that gain for a blank then definitely a good option to wait.

My point is that the free hit over a blank is guaranteed points. You pick players with a game on, and leave behind the players that have a blank. With the added bonus that the players with a game on (likely to be from the worse teams) are then automatically gone for the following GW - brilliant!

How is anyone not understanding this? It's the guaranteed element. Replacing non-starters with with definite starters (all picked that week so you can align form and fixtures perfectly). It is 100% going to help you SCORE MORE POINTS. There will be no such thing as bad luck or "my original team outscored my free hit team, oh man so unlucky".

Ya the closer it gets the more interesting the possibility's are getting.

With only a few teams in play that week most will go for the same group of players but there is great potential to have a good punt on it with player choices and and captaincy.

If one played their card right it could give a bigger prospective points advantage than even any of the other chips.

I agree that the free hitters will probably be going for very similar teams due to lack of choices, but I think there will be enough of a differential vs. the people who have blown the chip already.

And yes, definitely agree that potentially it can have the biggest advantage. It's a low-risk, high-reward scenario really - even if your players don't score many points it's still going to be more points than players who blank.

All of the above is based on there even BEING such a blank GW - correct me if I'm wrong but last year was almost unprecedented in terms of the number of big teams who had a blank. PL teams all avoided each other in the cup and created such a scenario, already I see 3 all-PL third round ties...

Yes, hopefully enough of the big teams will progress in the FA Cup, an element of luck is required.

If there is no big blank GW, I'll most likely use the free hit as a free wildcard in the last GW of the season.

last year was a bit higher than average but not much. the year before gw34 and gw37 were pretty big doubles, i think 2014 had a big one.

this season the title will be over so teams will likely plough into the cups a bit more.

The free hit chip is surely relative to said team on said gw? Saving for the bgw is obviously the 'ideal' situation, but many will have played it well on other gameweeks depending on their squad and rank etc.

            • 8 Years

Sure, it is relative - however, using it on a BGW guarantees you points 100%, whereas using it at other times relies on luck to an extent.

Guarantees 100% what points? You're talking as if anyone who doesnt have their free hit will have an entire squad blanking, and we have no idea who will blank yet. There's no guarantees in fpl and luck is a big factor all the time regardless of when chips are used. I acknowledge the good aspect of playing the free hit during the bgw is the lack of planning before and an easier ride after. Points earned on the bgw itself are completely dependant on your players and captain choice as it is in any other gw, and if it's a big blank you should have an edge on most teams. I think you're over stating the potential benefit (in terms of points) of the bgw free hit. I hope it turns out lucrative for you.

I think KTeam (above) arguably is overstating the potential benefit. I'm being realistic. There's going to be a bunch of teams with blanks in one gameweek - chances are a lot of these teams will be popular for FPL (City, Chelsea, United for example). Having the chance to swap out players who are guaranteed to score 0 points for players who are guaranteed to play equals guaranteed points. It's pretty simple. Not only in that particular gameweek, but also in terms of the planning it would've taken otherwise.

On top of that, there's also the following GWs to consider - if you've sold some of your blanking players in order to field 11, chances are you'll want a lot of them back, spending even more transfers.

Sure, there's potential to maximise points within the blank - you still have to pick the correct players and captain, but it's still guaranteed points vs. what you would've done otherwise. That is, unless the big teams all fail to qualify for the later rounds of the FA Cup and the FPL landscape isn't as affected as last year. In that case, I'm probably playing the free hit in the last GW of the year as a free wildcard.

          I have the same issue.
Bottom line is Kane and Kun stretch the money too far.

I don't like any of the premiums. They all have the league cup games that might distract them from the league. They all could work for different reasons.

Mahrez is the best of the other ones, although I'd wait a week the bring him in. Stoke looks like one of the teams Pogba will tear apart, so he could be worth it short term. Just stay away from Mane. He is a confidence player and right now he is dreadful.

        Now then,

        Thoughts on this WC Team:

        DDG

        Jones / Alonso / Otamendi

        Arnautovic / Lingard / Sterling / Salah / Mahrez

        Kane / Carroll

        Bench: Myhill / crouch/ Wimmer / mbemba

Wouldn't touch Carroll or Arnie with the DGW done. The rest looks great of course.

Arnie's in form and carroll tends to be streaky and score goals in clumps, west hams fixtures are decent and they seem to be improving......admittedly a bit of a punt, but that was the thought process.

Not at all. Good but high scores in a GW will be high scores for a lot of people.

Can anyone tell me why Salah who is not flagged has not dropped in price?
