Dugout Discussion – Wednesday

The penultimate fixture of the packed festive schedule gets underway at 7.45pm as Arsenal and Chelsea go head-to-head at the Emirates.

For the hosts, Alexis Sanchez has upped his output in recent weeks – after a slow start to the season, last term’s top scoring player in Fantasy Premier League has delivered points in seven of his last 10 league appearances.

That form suggest that the Chilean is likely to pose the main danger to a defence that’s conceded just four times in their previous 11.

Nonetheless, it’s Alexandre Lacazette who is the Gunners’ most captained player for Gameweek 22, handed the armband by 2.02%.

The Frenchman has been a consistent source of points at home, producing a goal or assist in seven of his 10 appearances, but he’s struggled for a cutting edge of late and failed to find the net since Gameweek 15.

A return to form could reignite interest in Lacazette ahead of four kind fixtures (bou CRY swa EVE) in as many Gameweeks.

Despite a run of two goals in the last nine Gameweeks, Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata (3.7%) is the top armband pick for this fixture.

That lack of form means that the Spaniard and team-mate Eden Hazard were among the top five most transferred out players for Gameweek 22, sent packing by 243,000+ and 207,000+ respectively.

Hazard has mustered just a single assist in five yet both he and Morata also have some decent fixtures ahead to arrest their recent declines – over the next five Gameweeks, Antonio Conte’s side host Leicester, Bournemouth and West Brom and also make their way to Brighton and Watford.

Encouragingly for Hazard’s owners, he looks set to return to a central role with the visitors rolling out a 3-5-1-1 formation.

The Gunners, meanwhile, welcome back Mesut Ozil from a minor knee problem, though injuries in defence means that Arsene Wenger is forced to field the likes of Calum Chambers, Rob Holding and Ainsley Maitland-Niles in his starting line-up.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    A. Firmino Mahrez
    B. Aguero Arnautovic

    Which one would you pick for the next 6 weeks?

    Already have Sterling and Salah.

    Anyone else just fed up about players buying penalties? It's ruining the game and the authorities have failed to address it. I don't buy this 'the flow the game would be affected' by having a TMO. Much of the play is just square passes and parking the bus. Three challenges per match for each time or have a man in the van talking to the ref. It's not rocket science.

      what do you mean by 'buying penalties'? you mean diving? Seems players are more prone to diving more than past seasons and quite ironic that they have introduced retrospective banning but doesn't seem to halt these divers.

        Yes, effectively diving. Initiating contact with the defender with clear intent so they can fall over his leg and win a penalty. It's cheating and it's more rife than ever. The game is too fast and the authorities have failed to change the way the game is officiated (by introducing technology) to keep up.

      it would make football so much better, i hate these controversial calls... I don't see it as 'part of the game', i'm just bored by all the press that surrounds them, managers whinging, and costing me FPL points!

      Agreed - video referee should be introduced asap. We need to help referees get things right, not straightjacket them.

        I don't blame the referees and think it's shocking the abuse they get from the media. It's the authorities who are at fault for failing to oversee the sport properly.

      Are you referring to the Hazard penalty? If so, it's a foul anywhere on the pitch, including the penalty area.

        His penalty falls into category 3 below. He went down like a sack of spuds. Any fair sportsman would have stayed on his feet.

      3 different types of dives and have different degrees of cheating.
      1. No contact made but falling over to make referee think there was
      2. Moving foot/leg across so it makes contact with the defender so it looks like a foul
      3. Falling over or exaggerating the slightest of contact

        The 3 sideline officials could help the on field ref out here. Maybe hold cards up like diving judges do - with a 1, 2 or 3 on them based on your list (or something similar).

      They have recently bought in video reff’ing in the A-League (Australian league) but along with it retrospective yellow & red cards on the fly during matches and it has been an absolute debacle, one of the first matches had play stopped twice to deliver yellow cards one of which led to a red. I know this isn’t what you are asking for but it’s not hard to see introducing this as part of a video ref system.

        I think the results of this harsh crackdown will come to fruition over time, I think they need to assess after a few seasons of consistent harsh penalties to offenders retrospectively as to how effective it is

    Morning all, do you think this WC team is an improvement? Tempted to go for it;

    Current;
    Foster Alonso
    Alonso Ota Dunk Robertson Ogbonna
    Sterling Son Alli Arnie Rich
    Kane Vardy DCL

    WC;
    Pope Gomes
    Alonso Ota Dunk Hegazi Ogbonna
    Sterling Salah Lingard KDB DLC
    Kane Firmino

    I think it's an improvement, but can't decide if it's enough to justify Wildcard.

    Am I crazy to think 451 is the way forward, considering the returns of Alonso / Chelsea, and both Manchester defences? The Hammers have some decent fixtures coming up if Carroll can hold his fitness, so he'll be a good option from the bench.

    I'm thinking of moving out Morata so I can upgrade Mbemba and Mee to Alonso and Otamendi (already have Jones / Duffy / Gomez), I may even double on one of them.

    Midfield is currently Hazard / Salah / Richarlison / Gross / Sterling, and up front Kane / Morata / Calvert-Lewin (who also needs to go.

    Thoughts?

    Anyone using their wildcard early for a complete strategy rethink?

    I'm going to forgo the usual wildcard DGW madness late in the season and and use it to change my strategy because I think I can improve my teams returns in the next half dozen GW's by a greater amount than it'll return playing it for a DGW

    Going to go one up front because it seems to me that strikers are just too unreliable and don't offer enough value this year. So i'm either going to set up 5-4-1 or 4-5-1. Decide over the course of this window

    Current thinking is either;

    DDGea (Elliot)
    Alonso, Azpilicueta, Jones, Otamendi (Klaven)
    Salah, Sterling, Mahrez, Linguard. Richarlison
    Kane (Ayew, A, Quaner)

    or a 5-4-1 with Nacho

    Obviously will need to keep an eye on MUN incomings, Mahrez situation etc

    anyone have similar thoughts or strongly oppose this?

      Alli Eriksen Salah Sane Sterling
      DCL Kane Quaner

      OR rank down to 1.3m

      Thinking of working Haz, Kun and Haz into the equation without straying from this formation. I reckon Lingard/Arnie might be the key. Even the forgotten man Gro$$ perhaps.

      Everton defender instead of Klaven, who wasn't nailed before VVD arrived.

    This is the most frustrating gameweek of FPL that I can remember, mainly due to saving transfers and planning for it a long way in advance, and now being on 31 points with huge red arrows and only duds like Son and Ogbonna to go.

    Kane's class stands out amongst a bunch of donkey strikers this year. Really need a decent score from him tonight. Hope he's over his illness.

      Dont forget Kane has been a donkey (at home) against much worse opposition than Arsenal this year

          Would call Kane class if these are his points agaiunst the worst travelling defences

          Burnley 2pts
          Swansea 2pts
          Brighton 2pts
          Bournemouth 2pts
          Palace 2pts

          Would Drogba, RvP or Suarez have blanked here?

    Son + Christensen -> Lingard + Aguero (-4)?

    Been meaning to get Alonso in for weeks but haven't really had an ft spare to upgrade Christensen, time to stop delaying the inevitable and bring him in for a hit?

    In the need of a Keeper. Have Speroni / Elliot.

    Is Kun as essential as some make out or is it based on sentiment? He got most the chances/goals pre-Pep but times have changed and City's goals seem to be more spread around these days. For me, Sterling and Ota are enough.

      with all the other options and value in midfield and defence he is not only not essential but he is arguably a bad pick

        Never thought I’d hear this. I am chasing so for me a guaranteed start for Kun makes him essential

        If I were offered Kun or Alonso I'd take the latter and he's 60% of the price. The days of Kun exploding are gone under Pep IMO. Sterling, Silva, Sane, KDB will all chip in with goals.
