Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 27

There may be one match left of the current round of fixtures but we’re already looking ahead with the launch of our Captain Poll for Gameweek 27.

Home comforts will ensure Manchester City assets challenge for the summit as Pep Guardiola’s troops look to atone for Saturday’s draw at Burnley when Leicester roll up to the Etihad.

Despite disappointing the 940,000 (16.5%) Fantasy Premier League managers who captained him at Turf Moor, Sergio Aguero (11.9)’s home form is convincing. In front of his own fans the Sky Blues striker has scored 11 of his 17 league goals – a record he shares with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

The Argentinian has delivered attacking returns in all four of his recent encounters at the Etihad, ranking up two double-digit points hails along the way. Overall, he has seven goals and an assist from his last six home matches.

Kevin De Bruyne (10.3) is another likely to garner votes – 11 of the Belgian’s 17 assists and four of his five goals have come at home. At the Etihad, De Bruyne has registered more shots on target than Aguero (22 to 20), with only Salah (29) and Spurs’ Harry Kane (38) more accurate on home turf.

There’s a similar pattern with Raheem Sterling (9.0)’s home and away form – he has registered more goals (nine vs five) and assists (seven to three) in front of his own supporters.

The Foxes should be obliging visitors on Saturday having picked up just two clean sheets on the road, the joint-second worst away record, conceding on 20 occasions.

Mohamed Salah (10.3)’s brace at Anfield in yesterday’s 2-2 thriller against Spurs makes the Liverpool winger almost impossible to ignore for a trip to Southampton.

A 15-point return against Spurs was the 15th time in his last 17 league run outs that the Egyptian has delivered points. His opponents’ record bodes well for the top-scoring player in FPL – no side has fewer clean sheets at home (two) than the Saints, while only two teams have conceded more goals (19) in front of their own supporters.

Salah has already bagged 16 points against Southampton at Anfield, back in Gameweek 12.

The North London derby at Wembley Stadium presents a wealth of captaincy candidates, most notably Spurs’ Harry Kane (12.8) given his aforementioned accuracy in front of goal in home matches. The striker, who scored his 100th Premier League goal at Anfield yesterday and has 10 successful strikes in front of his own fans, has also fired off more shots (91) and more penalty area shots (55) than any other player in front of his own fans.

Furthermore, Kane has scored six goals in as many league appearances against the Gunners.

Son Heung-min has the most impressive home form among the Spurs midfield contingent, having scored in seven of his last nine Wembley outings. He has five goals and five assists in his last six home matches.

The visitors’ swashbuckling 5-1 victory against Everton at the Emirates on Saturday should enhance their prospects, with Aaron Ramsey (6.9) particularly catching the eye with a hat-trick.

Former Borussia Dortmund duo Henrikh Mkhitaryan (7.8) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (10.5) both impressed on their first starts for the Gunners, with three assists and a goal respectively. They are already this week’s most popular transfer targets, earning 125,000+ and 93,000+ new owners since Saturday’s deadline passed.

Alexis Sanchez (11.8) is another potential captaincy candidate after a gung-ho performance against Huddersfield in his home debut for Manchester United on Saturday. During the 2-0 victory against the Terriers the Chilean scored from the spot, after having his initial penalty kick saved. He also fired off more shots (six) than any other player in the Gameweek so far and created three chances for team-mates.

Next up, Sanchez visits a Newcastle side that has just one clean sheet in their last six home matches.

Chelsea’s trip to Watford tonight will be keenly watched by those eyeing up a Blues asset for the armband. In Gameweek 27 Antonio Conte’s men host a West Brom outfit that has a solitary clean sheet and shipped 10 goals in their last six road trips.

There should be particular interest in how Olivier Giroud (8.2) performs, should he earn his Chelsea debut at Vicarage Road after moving from Arsenal in the January transfer window.

The Frenchman’s track record across his 16 appearances for the Gunners bodes well, having registered a shot in the box at a faster rate (one every 22 minutes) than any other player.

Other Chelsea players challenging for a strong finish in the poll are likely to include Eden Hazard (10.7), who has three goals in four starts prior to tonight’s Vicarage Road clash. The all-round Fantasy potential of Marcos Alonso (7.4) also keeps him in consideration. He is the highest scoring FPL defender this season with six goals, an assist, 12 clean sheets and 13 bonus points.

Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson (5.9), who has four goals and two assists in his last seven run-outs, may also gain interest.

The forward may have failed to find the net in Saturday’s 2-1 home victory Stoke but he now visits a Huddersfield side that have conceded eight times in their last four home matches – only Watford have shipped more (nine) over that time frame.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 27 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Ownership and the run in

With just 11 Gameweeks to go ownership becomes a bigger issue.

Sticking with the most owned players can cause stagnation with little risk or reward.

But there are ways to beat that

    1. Captain the most owned and most consistently scoring player.

For example, Salah is so popular that even just owning him is not enough - arguably his real value lies in captaining him.

In the top 10K only 7% of managers do not own the Liverpool forward. Of the 93% that own him a fifth handed him the armband. It is that fifth that prospered this week and will likely see a green arrow by the close of the week.

    2. Getting in as many well owned players as possible becomes a differential in itself. In the top 10K, Sterling is owned by around 85% of managers, KDB by 17%...but very few will own both.

Similarly pairing up Firmino with Salah can bring rewards….and in a few Gameweeks Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang.

    3. Ignoring the well owned players and placing your faith in differentials. This is the high risk, high reward approach, typified by those who do not even own Salah. Or those who have opted to ditch Kane for Aguero and captain the City man. Or captain another such as Wilson or Hazard. For this to succeed two things need to happen – the template needs to flop and the differentials need to succeed.

How are you looking to climb the rankings. What advice do you have? Are you looking to beat the template at its own game by shrewd use of double ups and the captaincy?

Or are you more keen on the high risk, high reward tactics of being different?

Was expecting to see you with a sub 1m rank. In fact you are far far higher and still in with a shout of success. You can easily finish in the top 50K with good chip use over the doubles and blanks.

I was outside the top 1m at this stage last season...ended up 82K.... you can definitely get much higher than that.

I favour the beat the template at its own game through captaining the best player (who by chance happens to be Salah) and doubling up on popular players to create differentials. But each to his own.

Good luck and don't give up.

Hang in there and treat you current situation as a challenge, how many places can you rise, track the top 10 or mods & cons league to see if you can outscore them from now in ... loads of fun to had

You can still do well, I was ranked at 260,000 this stage last season and finished 8,000. A good rank is well within reach, especially if you play the doubles right. Try to enjoy the game regardless of rank as well, the strategy or social element, whatever you like.

Utilising WC/chips is the best way to make up points - own and captain the players who you think will score the most points - don't over-complicate it.

I feel robbed with him to be honest. A nailed, cheap way into a Cheslea bacline that we had identified as in form, with great fixtures. And our analysis was correct.

The 24 points or so lost would have made a nice difference to my rank aswell with it being so close where I am! Ah well, just terrible luck to be honest, can't do anything about it.

It never rains but it pours! I've similarly had Stones playing alongside Christensen (or not playing as it turns out) in recent weeks, which has probably seen the curse transferred from one useless 5.4m lump of sh*te to another. Looks like he managed to infect your squad too. I'm sure many transferred from Christensen to Jones aswell and are probably thinking the same thing. Maybe Christensen is "patient zero" and the beginning of an FPL version of a zombie apocalypse. In 6 weeks time we will all be trying to avoid ending the gameweek with a minus score!

This is my second season and first time I'm in top 10k. At the moment I'm just outside top10k though, but tonight's Hazard (C) should bring things back to normal I hope.

Anyway, I don't have much experience playing in high places and decided to take aggressive differential approach. I read a lot here how stagnated thing are in top10k during final third of the season, so I already brought in Mkhi last GW (one GW too early, but I'm not disappointed now), bought Hazard and captained him this weekend (we'll see tonight how this goes), ditched Kane for Aguero for now.

I think I am going to take even more risks, looking at Aubameyang, Mane instead of Firmino as second Liverpool attacker, maybe even Sanchez. It's high risk, I know. But as I said it's my first season in (almost) top10k and I'm willing to take that risk. Maybe next season I'll be more dullard. If this goes all wrong this time. 🙂

I only care about my main two mini leagues... so I’ve decided to go maverick. Kept Alonso, Salah and Sterling... but hoping PVA, KDB, Sanchez, Dawson, Eriksen, etc. can give me a season-changing GW soon.

My HT a few weeks back touched on this. Like I said, given that the highly owned players align more with actual performance as the season runs on, in some sense it becomes more about "not losing ground" and relying on solid fundamentals and allowing antsy managers to slip up. (Like stubborn non Salah owners this week).

From GW31 life will become chaotic with the BGW/DGW and chip madness, so that's going to be great fun, and no doubt many FPL hearts will be broken.

I think the most important thing is being adaptable and reading the situations as they come. People talk about "my strategy" but there isn't necessarily one set strategy that will always be optimum at any given time. Which is why I think words like "dullard" aren't helpful - if over a period being a "dullard" then results in getting the most points, who cares? You just have to be willing to be more aggressive if the landscape calls for it.

For someone in my position around the 400k mark, to try achieve a respectable rank I’m trying to move back towards the top 10k template as it is the template for a reason, it’s the group of players scoring the best at a particular time, having this main core of players should allow me to move past the players around my rank and having a couple differentials are handy in order to catch those higher ranked players. In simpler terms, I’m playing the safe game and sticking to the template rather than trying to get ahead of it

      At 200k at the moment.

I have done all 1, 2 and 3 in last few weeks.

I captained Salah (1), I bought Firmino (2) to prevent rank slumps if he scores well (Vardy scoring consistently during the same period made it less effective though), and (3) bought Hazard, but decided not to captain, but use him as differential.

Looking to take advantage of the fixture swing in GW28 by ditching Utd, City, Chelsea assets in favour of those from Liverpool and Spurs and possibly Arsenal. So doubling up on Spurs, trebling up on Liverpool, and adding an Arsenal midfielder.

Keeping an awareness of which teams will play in GW31 and slowly adding/keeping players from these sides alongside the above.

Wildcarding in GW32 to get as much benefit from it as I can, which will also allow me to attack the doubles.

      still don't really get EO.
e.g. Both players owned - If Salah is 120% and Kun is 80% how many extra pts does Kun need to score just to match Salah's 12pts? Or doesn't it work like that?

      1. FC nelo
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 3 months ago

What do you mean? EO is just a measurement of how many fantasy players own a particular player. Has nothing to do with the points they get. Or maybe I don't understand what you are getting at?

          maybe i'm wrong.
Thought it was along the lines of higher the EO the more damage it can do to non-owners.
Over 100% meant that not owning starts to damage rank. If a player has 120% then quite a large number are captaining him.
So if Sanchez (EO10%) matches Salah's (EO120%) pts (and you don't own both) your rank is likely to fall as higher % of Salah captainers?
Every GW loads of questions what do i need player x to do if i haven't captained him.

Captaining your highest scoring player is always best, irrespective of their EO.

Any points lost by not captaining the player with the highest EO will be more than compensated by captaining a player who outscores him.

Players with a high EO do have a high EO for a reason though, so it is usually a good idea to own them.

You can play safe by sticking to the highly owned template. But if you want to gain ground more quickly at the risk of losing ground more quickly instead then a few well-chosen differentials may be required.

I am in the top 8,300 just 55 points off top 1,000, so I will continue the template team with a few amendments till gw31. Have Alonso, KDB, Ibe, Wilson, then template. I will continue to captn Salah in next few matches, as he seems to offer most consistency and that is vital.

From gw32 I will let loose, play my wc and get players in I really think can make a difference. Arsenal players, Sanchez etc. as there seems a good route in dbgw34.

If I get the dbgws right no reason why I shouldn't easily be in the top 1,000 by gw37.

I think it is a mistake to go too gung ho and ditch template legends like Kane, Salah, Sterling. If they continue their season form not having them means you are fighting a losing battle

Not sure what the tactics should be.
Never been this high. Hit 1st template very early.
Yoyoing between 200-400 OR for 11 GWs.
How many differentials do I need to look for to challenge top 100 which is about usually about 20pts away? Or do you just sit still like Mark's been saying on Scoutcast and wait for others to take the risks and maybe be drop?

Stack up the 7-8/11 in starting 11 with high ownership , 2 medium level ownership players and 1 punt on a midfielder is what I am going to follow. Armband permanent on Salah. The only person I would think of am giving would be Kane only which has a very minimum chance.

This is the business end of the season, for me this isn't the time to take risks.

I'll be keeping hold of my highly owned players, backing Kane or Salah with the armband and hoping my chips do the rest.

Think the plan is going to be:

      Prepare for the GW31 blanks
      Wild Card in GW33
      Triple Captain in GW34
      Free Hit in GW35
      Bench Boost in GW37

300k mark at the moment (around 80 points off the Top 50k) so I'm hoping keeping the highly owned players protects the rank while planning with the chips shoots me in the Top 50k.

      In theory 🙂

I think 1. is very important. I've been struggling with the captaincy all season, but recently have just kept the armband on Salah and started seeing green arrows as a result. Might just keep it there for the rest of the season unless Kane looks like scoring big or there's a DGWK.

Navigating the blank and double gameweeks is going to be a major factor in end of season success. As someone who has neither free hit nor the second wildcard left, it's particularly important that I plan ahead. I'm targeting the 3 or 4 important players to own for 31, and my bench fodder are all going to be playing in 31, which is plenty imo. Also keeping 2FT available to prepare for dgwks after the blanks and to be able to adapt quickly based on cup results.

This is almost the only thing I have been thinking about, ever since the temğplate became a template and since my top rank in GW16 (22k) I have been drifting in ranks and making no progress. But I do not think that pairing is a solution. It, inevitably, diminishes your chances of returns. The moment Sterling scores, there are less chances that KDB will also score. That is what I believe. I think that there are two options,

      (a) either the template stays as a template, in which case all we can do will be to captain the correct high-owned player and in that sence, Jonty has a point, but there are still other options. I own Sterling, Salah, Kane and could captain either one any week which makes the choice still difficult, but also gives me room to make the correct choice. So my conclusion is, if the template will stay as a template, then captaining is the most feasible opportunity to go up. Yet, the truth is, how many times can we captain our top scoring player? Either I always captain Salah, which should consistently move me up bit by bit, or start risking other options, and there goes it when I get 2 points each week from Kane and Salah when the other has outscoren.

      (b) or the template does not stay as a template and we can foresee it. So far I failed in that respect. I got Hazard for 13 weeks and he got me a handful of goals and assists only. The week I sold him he got that brace. I still have Pogba and Lingard. What better way could be a pairing for that price. And now I do not know which will play and when. So the bottom line is, for me, unless I let go of Sterling, Salah, Kane, Firmino, Alonso, Otamendi my remaining differentials willbe insufficient to carry me up to 10k. And I risk losing my current 79k if someone below me finds the correct differential.

My decision has been to stick to the template until I WC. And then, depending on my rank, when I WC, possibly GW31, I will decide how many of these big hitters I will change. So in a nutshell, until a WC, I cannot see how to create a differential. It's just too risky.

OR 255 at the moment. Had a lot of luck all season and this is by far my most succesful year ever.

Can't help but tinkering with the idea of using my wc pretty soon for a final push up the leaderboard, signing differentials rather than keeping some of my template players. Probably quite stupid, but still...

Choose defensive players based on form and fixtures, and attacking players as you like..

Alright. I just saw I own 9 of the first XI in the top 1000. .
I'll roll this week's FT and bring in Firmino for Quaner and Milio for Hazard.

Then hope Adrian can match DDG's points when the latter faces United and Liverpool

For the first time now in the top 500 overall due to luck on captain choices and some players who I pick no matter who the opposition is eg DDG/Alonso/Kane etc etc. The extras are a constantly changing feast depending on fixtures first then form. For example just transferred in Mee and Gud from Burnley as I worry that some of my stars will be rotated next week with Champ league. Solid chance of points over next few weeks

1 FT, 0.0 ITB - any changes needed?

    DDG
    Alonso, Otamendi, Jones
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Lingard
    Kane, Firmino, Wilson

    (Elliot, Quaner, Mee, Mariappa)

Trying to resist taking a hit to replace Lingard with Walcott or Ramsey. Don't really fancy Shaqiri. Team still looks OK this week despite a very poor GW this week...

    Cheers

    Hennessey
    Walker Ota Alonso Francis
    Son Salah Shaqiri Walcott
    Kane Kun

    Speroni Dunk TCarroll Mcburnie

    1.1 1ft

Is it worth downgrading Otamendi to whoever to save the 0.1 drop? or save FT?

Can't see any obvious upgrades, perhaps Francis but Bournemouth have good fixtures. I would probably save FT and hope Otamendi starts. I think we will see a mass exodus after his first benching...

As you have walker anyway I’d say ota out is valid. I’d go for another big def with goal threat and good CS record. Valencia/Azpi, even Alderweirald if back soon. If downgrading then Jones or Monreal probably.

It's not only rotation that causing headache with City CB's. Fixtures stiffen, CL games at hand, new CB bought. Everything screams to sell for me. There will be GW's when Stones will play but they wont keep a CS and weeks when they'll keep it, but Stones will be benched. I'd get rid.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 27

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will be selected at random at 8:30am Wednesday and then asked to submit their XI by 10am by Friday by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

    Which one out ?
    A - Pogba
    B - Lingard

Have 0.3 itb so have either 8.2 or 6.6 to spend on a replacement.

    Current lineup :-
    Courtois / Elliot
    Daniels, McGuire, Otamendi, Mee, Mariappa

Am I better off paying the extra 0.6 for Mawson (5.0) over Fernandez (4.4)?

Fernandez is the captain right? (I'm really not sure and I'm THAT lazy that I won't check) Assuming so, at least he has the guarantee* of starting... I'd lean towards banking the 0.6, dependant on the rest of your D though. *Not guaranteed

im also looking at Fernandez too, he appears to be going largely* unnoticed (*somewhat ironic that we are discussing him of course lol)...even though under the new manager he has 2 attacking returns in last 3 (1 goal and 1 assist) + team looks a lot more solid and capable of cs at last...im defo keen 🙂

Kevin De Bruyne says he is playing in a state of exhaustion at the moment as Manchester City’s players have been given a four-day break by Pep Guardiola. The prospect of a refreshed and revitalised City should be a sobering one for any team hoping to stop them.

“I’m going away, it doesn’t matter where,” said De Bruyne. “It will do us a lot of good, I was feeling it from the first minute today.

“I’ve said it before – you feel great for 10 games, then you fee OK for 10 games, and then the rest you feel like s**t.

“You know, we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do. We’ve only got 15 or 16 players available at the moment, so we need to get through it.

Not surprised. Silva, KDB, Sane and Sterling have been running around like headless chickens all season - insane amount of pressing and tracking back! They must be suffering from Kloppitus, decline incoming...

Shouldnt he blame Pep? There are games where he should be rested and Pep could play Gundogan, B.Silva, Yaya Toure but still keeps on starting KDB.

It's actually quite funny. All the fanatical talk about 'Peptation' on here that has persisted all through the season and yet he is almost the guy with the most repeated team.

He has flogged these players half to death and the whole thing could be considered pretty irresponsible given the money they've spent and the reluctance to use Bilva, Mangala, Danilo, Toure and others. He doesn't even take KDB off when City are cruising.

Belgian supporters must be miffed by how much football their star mid and top goalscorer are playing due to stubborn managers.

Quite frankly, Pep & Jose can do as they please. It's the club's who play the players wages. Club football should not be affected because it's World Cup year...

Rotation damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Many so called experts slate managers left and right for rotating especially Pep and now that Pep hasn't been rotating a small core he gets slated even tho they have been hit hard by injury and they are completely obliterating the competition on the way to a PL record points total.

    2 FT.
    Bank: 0.1

    Pope
    Jones - Mee - Alonso - Cresswell
    Salah - Son - Sterling - Lingard
    Kane - Firmino
Subs: Adrian, Rodriguez, McArthur and Mbemba.

What should I change. I think my team needs improvement. Can you help me there?

Team looks ok - maybe something dull like Cresswell to Bauer as you have a FT to burn?

Assumed I would be using Free Hit in GW31 but now realise I might be able to get away with it and save for GW35.

Would be great if the Bournemouth game goes ahead as then I’ll get Daniels/Wilson playing.

At the moment for GW31 I provisionally have:

    Salah
    Pickford/Walcott
    Probably Tomkins/Milivojevic
    (Possibly Daniels/Wilson)

So that is 5 and possibly 7

Also looking to bring in the likes of:

    VVD
    Shaqiri
    Firmino

I will then be able to bench Kane, Sterling, Alonso!

What to do with this squad? 2fts 0.1 ITB.
    Pickford, Adrian
    Otamendi, alonso, Danilo, ogbonna, dunk.
    Salah, sterling, shaqiri, lingard, son.
    Kane, Wilson, Firmino.

Downgrade lingard, bring in mawson/mee for Danilo and possibly upgrade pickford to ddg?
