Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Chelsea And Leicester Progress

FA Cup wins for Premier League sides are achieved in markedly different ways as the Gameweek 31 schedule remains threadbare.

Chelsea and Leicester City gave Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers two more compelling reasons to perhaps delay the Free Hit chip by confirming their absence from Gameweek 31.

Had the Blues lost at home to Hull City and Leicester done likewise against Sheffield United in last night’s FA Cup fifth round ties, then Gameweek 31 would have been boosted by an additional two fixtures.

As it was, both top-flight teams progressed to the quarter-finals, to be played on the weekend of March 17, meaning their league matches on that date will now have to be rescheduled.

The Blues were due to travel to Burnley, while the Foxes would have entertained Arsenal.

We’ll have a far clearer idea as to the final make-up of Gameweek 31 once today’s four cup ties are played, but it’s already starting to look like a particularly light weekend of Premier League action.

Only two matches are already certain to go ahead – Stoke City v Everton and Liverpool v Watford.

They will be joined by the losers of this evening’s tie between Huddersfield and Man United.

If that’s the Terriers, they’ll entertain Crystal Palace in Gameweek 31, while United will travel to West Ham should they bow out of the cup.

There had been a strong case for managers to employ their Free Hit chip to cope with Gameweek 31’s fractured schedule.

But exploiting the benefits of the chip on a Gameweek involving just three matches would be a tricky proposition; potentially there will be very few effective differentials at our disposal.

And as the FA Cup quarter-finals could very well involve exclusively Premier League teams, that will also have an impact on Gameweek 35’s fixtures when the semi-finals are due to be played. That would make using the Free Hit chip at that point all the more attractive.

Willian the Conqueror

Last night’s victories couldn’t have been more different.

Chelsea were home and hosed by half-time, four goals to the good thanks to a brace from Willian and one each for Pedro and Olivier Giroud, the latter scoring his first for his new club.

Assists came from Cesc Fabregas, Emerson and two from Giroud, while any thoughts of an unlikely Hull comeback after the break were quickly snuffed out when Willy Caballero saved a penalty.

While Willian’s clinical finishing will have turned heads, the biggest news for Fantasy managers arrived in Antonio Conte’s post-match press conference. The Chelsea boss confirmed that he expects Marcos Alonso to return from an ankle sprain to face Barcelona in midweek.

Alonso is the most sold asset player of Gameweek 28, with over 112,000 moving him out. His remaining owners may now look to hold the top-scoring defending, though investing in Chelsea assets at present is an unattractive proposition.

Conte’s men will face both Manchester sides – and both away – over the next two Gameweeks, with a visit from Spurs looming in Gameweek 32.

The Gameweek 31 blank therefore means they’ll play three of the top five over their next four matches, with two Champions League Round of 16 clashes with Barcelona to add into the mix as well.

Vardy strikes again

Leicester fielded a strong side against Championship promotion-chasers Sheffield United but had to wait until the 66th minute to break the deadlock.

Jamie Vardy scored what turned out to be the winner, set up by the returning Riyad Mahrez, who came out to boos but left the pitch to a standing ovation.

Vardy has now notched in five successive matches in all competitions and has picked up 55,000 new owners ahead of Gameweek 28. Only Oumar Niasse and Roberto Firmino have enjoyed more transfer interest.

Meanwhile, Fantasy managers will have welcomed Ben Chilwell’s presence at left-back for the Foxes. He ousted Christian Fuchs to provide another hint at the pecking order. Club skipper Wes Morgan also returned to the teamsheet, as Aleksandar Dragovic dropped out of the squad.

Leicester’s schedule is far more obliging than Chelsea’s.

A visit from Arsenal and a trip to Spurs are the only blots on an otherwise agreeable fixture landscape all the way through to the end of the season.

But with their Premier League status in no major doubt, coach Claude Puel picked a very strong team last night to signal his intention to make the FA Cup a priority.

That could eventually lead to squad rotation in the league, although their schedule, for now, is sufficiently well-spaced to make that an issue for the longer term, particularly if they make the cup semi-finals.

The whole picture will be a lot clearer following today’s ties and tonight’s quarter-final draw. But for now, Gameweek 31 looks to be a case of make do and mend for most FPL managers.

For further reference, we’ve written two articles providing a detailed look at the FA Cup implications for Fantasy managers.

Part One is available here, while Part Two can be found here.

How come there's been no mention of a strategy involving using the FH chip in a double gameweek? People are covering every eventuality with the fixtures but I haven't even seen this mentioned.

Here are a few of the fixtures for GW35 (all teams left in FA Cup):

    Chelsea v Huddersfield
    Brighton v Spurs
    Swansea v Man City
    Leicester v Southampton

Even without considering FA Cup upsets, there is a possibility (and it's not all that crazy) that the 4 teams advancing to the semi finals will only be across two fixtures, leaving us with 8 fixtures going ahead in GW35. If this was the case, and we'll know how likely/unlikely that is by tonight, then there could be some merit to the following strategy (especially for those without the triple captain chip):

    GW31: Navigate with transfers
    GW32/33: Wildcard
GW 34: Bench Boost (and bank transfer)
GW 35: Use two free transfers to bring in non-blankers
GW 37: Use Free Hit chip to field best 11 double gameweek players.

Obvious cons to this strategy would be:
-Potentially missing one or two big hitters in GW35
-Possibly having to pick weak players for DGW37 if there's not many teams with doubles

Still too up in the air for me. I hope there are only 3 fixtures on in GW31 with crap teams (except Liverpool) playing. Makes GW31 a redundant week IMO.

Take this one particular scenario as an example: FA Cup semi-finalists are Leicester, Man City, Southampton, Swansea. If this were to happen, these would be the double gameweek teams' fixtures:

      Man City: SWA, HUD
      Southampton: lei, eve
      Leicester: SOU, WHU
      Swansea: mci, bou

Most teams will be loaded up with Man City so we can ignore them for the moment. It looks like one could easily jump rank by tripling up on Leicester, picking an in form Southampton player or two, and maybe one from Swansea as a differential. Also ditching players from Chelsea and Liverpool (who play each other), for teams with good single fixtures such as Arsenal, Spurs, Man United could be a rank booster also

These teams would have a double in 34 and a blank in 35. Can you play BB in 34 and have 11 non-blankers in 35 with 2 freebies?

I think for those who have already used a TC or BB this is a great strategy...especially for example in DGWK 37. GWK 38 is a lottery so it doesn't matter what team comes back.

Using it in DGWK 37 means you an cherry pick the best XI that money allows.

For those that wasted the TC on Kane at Christmas this could be a great chance to steal a march on rivals.

Arsenal will probably still be involved in the Europa League in GW30.
So if Man City draw their cup game then it is more likely that Arsenal v Man City will be moved to GW34 or GW37 and Man City v Brighton brought forward from GW31 to GW30.

Even with TC chip this idea a useful. TC chip have a high end of around 20-25 pts. With this we can get 11 dgw players with decent bench for 37. Could outscore the 25 point celing. And as for 35 we can get stock up on Arsenal players who have dgw 34 and a fixture in 35. The TC chip could be used on anyone in gw 38. All the top 6 clubs have easy fixture on paper. Kane vs Leicester could be my top priority.

You're assumption is that most double GWK games will happen in 34. Last season the split between 34 and 37 was equal and it's not necessary all the missed games will take place in GWK 34 as a lot of things (security, tube, travel, etc) will have to be considered.

That being said I think focusing on nailing the 2 blanks, free hit in GW 34 and WC in GW 36 to use a bench boost in GWK 37 also looks like a viable strategy.

Triple Captain needs to be played in a stand out fixture and City could have won the title by GW 33 which makes Kane (MCY, NEW) appealing or alternatively his GW 37 looks like (wba, NEW).

I've thought about this strategy a lot. I thought I was alone! I think most people are in 'default' DGW BB and TC mode because that has been the norm for the last couple of seasons. In fact if you look at the strongest chip you can use to maximise a DGW return the free hit chip is by far the strongest.

Pros: Pick any 11 players you want on that very week. It doesn't require a wildcard in advance. Plus you can take a punt or two because you're not tied to the players.

Barring a miracle I think we will get knocked out of the CL by Barca- which means we will only have FA cup and League left. Based on how the other first legs are going / how I think they will go- I think the other teams may have more on their plate than Chelsea by going deep in the CL and could potentially suffer from that.

      Just a theory.

Hazard to Eriksen/Mane/Mahrez is an option for me but would leave my bench exposed (still hold DCL and RLC), so inclined to keep tbh and sort one of those issues first.

Those who saved a transfer last week and have 2 frees will probably see it very differently. If I was an Alonso owner, He would be out.

Beginning of season he was gone because Alex Sandro was coming in. He goes and scores a brace against Spurs. Palmieri comes in - he scores against Arsenal. Now he is coming back off an injury and his place is under threat. Expect Goalonso to perform.

Not saying goodbye to Alonso, simply au revoir. He’ll be back on the wildcard. But it’s time for a break. It’ll do us both good.

Obviously waiting for resolution with cup games and the UCL fixtures next midweek but it's gotta be AlonGO so I can redistribute funds. Lots of it is down to individual context; if you have Otamendi too I can see why you'd want rid of him instead of Alonso.

Just a few weeks ago, the scoutcast team concluded that Alonso must stay. The arguments are still valid and it's undignified to see big names in FPL jump on the AlonGO hashtag.

I'm keeping both Azpi and Hazard for now.

I have other fires to put out (Lingard, Masuaku) and I believe Chelsea will do better long-term than City who I expect to concentrate on other tournaments pretty soon and do heavy rotation in the league. If anyone's going for VVD, it's Ota.

Hazard may still make way for Walcott for GW31.

Absolutely time to bail. While Hazard has been impressive recently, he's been so on his own, which won't be enough at Old Trafford or the Etihad.

I have Alonso, Hazard and 2 free transfers. I think I'll be doing the following assuming a GW31 Free hit:

      GW28: Hazard > Mahrez
      GW29: Alonso, McBurnie > Mustafi > Aubamayang

Don't see Emerson walking into the Chelsea league team.

Alonso being your transfer out is a pretty good spot to be in tbf. Some don't own Kane, Firmino or Vardy and own one of Lingard or Sanchez. I'd say for quite a few Alongo is 3rd or 4th on their wish list.

Holding Hazard. Doing well and prepared to wait a week or two to see how he does with a no9 back. Utd next isn't a big concern

Think I'll be doing Alonso to VVD.
Be worried about Bavies in, still always the threat of rotation in Spurs' WB positions with Aurier also able to switch to the left even if Danny Rose has become this year's Kyle Walker - bag packed and standing by the exit door
Maguire perhaps more advisable despite the blank, good fixtures (esp next 2 home games) and goal threat - my worry would be that if they don't keep a clean sheet you're relying on goal threat that seems relatively few and far between. Last goal was gw19 v United, before that GW2, and Leicester haven't kept a clean sheet in 3 Gameweeks.
Maybe worth going for a Mee or something and spending the overlay elsewhere?

Got 2FTs, realised I want more Liverpool and Leicester coverage given fixtures.
Which of these 3 is the best moves in your opinion?

    1) Alonso, Aguero, Ayew
    To
    VVD, Firmino, Vardy (leaves 0.9ITB)

    2) Alonso, Hazard, Ayew
    To
    Robertson, Mane, Vardy (leaves 0.4ITB)

    3) Alonso, Hazard, Ayew
    To
    Robertson, Mahrez, Firmino (leaves 0.5ITB)

    4) Alonso, Mee, Ayew
    To
Lowton, 4.2 def, Vardy (leaves 0ITB)

    5) Do nothing:

    Adrian
    Alonso | Jones | Mee
    Salah | Hazard | Sterling | Milivojevic
    Kane | Aguero | Ayew

    Elliot | T.Carroll | Simpson | Dummett

One factor is keeping Hazard as a differential (despite the fixtures) and therefore number 1 gives me the most differentials.
