Monitor – Pascal Gross

We continue our series of Monitor members’ articles on Gameweek 34 targets by assessing Brighton and Hove Albion schemer, Pascal Gross.

Although Mohamed Salah has redefined the term “successful debut season”, the German’s rookie campaign deserves its share of recognition.

Following a summer arrival from FC Ingolstadt, Gross has proven himself a standout candidate among budget midfield options. The playmaker has quickly earned a reputation as a premium creative force at the Premier League level, racking up some of the most impressive creativity metrics of any player.

Moreover, with two Double Gameweeks – one confirmed for Gameweek 34, and the latter expected to fall in or around Gameweek 37 – still to come this season, Gross is set to remain at the forefront of plans, with or without the Wildcard at our disposal.

With everyone seemingly avoiding City & Arsenal on their WC due to perceived lack of interest in PL ( either with nothing to play for or the title already won) and other players such from Spurs & Man U defence etc due to rotation risk, the WC is becoming quite a narrow pick and inevitable very template.

I think there is a huge chance that the template may fail because of ‘too many of the same eggs in the same basket’ and a few of these ignored differentials could be FPL gold 🙂

Still considering Smalling UTD def double up. Think you're right. Could be interesting to see the scoring.

Avoiding for 34 doesn't necessarily mean avoiding for 32/33 or 35 onwards.

WC in 32 or 33 to set up with doublers 34 and 37 seems to exclude quite a lot of decent players and largely ignores the other games ?

Auba has slipped in to teams by accident as an early transfer, but otherwise players from teams that don’t double in both 34 and 37 as I mention above. City & Arsenal the main teams, both of whom that can get cricket (England anyway 😉 ) style scores.

Just surprised the lure of 2 double game weeks is so strong ...

On ffs - really? You've just addressed the Arsenal thing, but Man City picks/not isn't just about optimising for doubles, but broader doubts. Aguero vs Jesus makes either an expensive risk. Since B Silva got more minutes Sterling's value isn't as clear cut. I think KDB & Sane are great, but not worth the extra money yet for one less game. Defence - eve, MUN, tot also doesn't scream essential yet.

But do you really think Son, Mahrez & Willian (the template midfield of 2 x doubles ) will play every game from now to the end of the season ? Will they outscore, say, Sane, Silva & Mikhi ?

Basically everyone one is largely ignoring City & Arsenal and stacking the bench with Brighton and Burnley ... just because of one extra game in 34? Not saying it is right or wrong, just surprised by the lack of debate or alternative WC drafts ...

Neither am I saying one is better than the other because I don’t have a crystal ball, but anything other than consideration of the template seems to be dismissed out of hand ... but hey, that is what happens in a double game week

Good luck with how ever you attack this conundrum 🙂

Silva has started the last 3 PL games, played all but 4 minutes of them and seems to be back as first choice default midfielder.

You need a decent bench this time of year because almost anyone can be rested or get injured with the fixture congestion, so if you fancy him in your team the go for it.

Personally I would even consider doubling up with two of Sane, Silva & Sterling, you probably will miss a game or two but when one doesn’t play the other is likely to be there. Getting 6 out of 8 games from two of those is likely to out score most others in that price range that will play all 8 games ?

Silva has always been first choice default midfielder, it’s the ongoing personal issues that is the problem.

Would it be a better strategy to double up on United and Chelsea defenders (but who?) instead of getting cheapies like Dunk, Stephens etc?

I agree. That’s why my defence will be Bailly Alonso Vertonghen Morgan Lowton.

I had Valencia during this time last season and if my memory serves me well he was rotated in a game too (but that might have been because of Europa League)... But he might be rotated due to FA Cup, no?

Certainly worth 1 from Leicester and Burnley but not a double up.
Problem I have with doubling up on United and Chelsea is balancing cost with rotation-free players.
De Gea picks himself, Valencia doesn't have much compeition and Bailly should be fine. 2/3 eats up a lot of your budget. Everyone else in the Utd backline looks a rotation risk.
Courtois and Azpilicueta look sure starters. After that i'd say everyone is a doubt. Even Alonso DGW24 worries me as I expect he'll get a rest against Burnley before the FA Cup Semi final.
Because of this i'm looking to spread it out with; DDG, Ryan, Azpilicueta, Morgan, Tarkowski, Robertson + 1 (potentially Mariappa to save cash and get a 35 player.

Yeah, this is a pickle, with the attackers I want there just is not enough cash... I am thinking of Cedric of Stephens, but that's just because I'm a Saints fan and also already lost my ML, so I kind of want to have a Saints def in my team, they do have a decent double coming up... I'd double up on Leicester defence but I will have Vardy/Mahrez so can't do that, and then swap for a SWA def for the next double... It's a pickle....

What’s the deal with the lack of Bailly love?

Mustafi and Aub to Bailly and Lukaku is on the cards. I think that second united defence cover is a much better prospect then uncertainty over Chelsea or Spurs playing City.

I feel like Mahrez can almost cover Vardy but there's little Utd cover for Lukaku.

He's consistently returning now as well, albeit not hauling. I think he's pretty vital.

You can’t have it all without the FH ... but targeting players after 35 that have a double in 37 by using free transfers and a hit or two will give you a pretty stacked team by 37?

                      Pull my team apart please? I haven't activated wildcard but this is what I have set up currently;

                      DDG, Pope
                      Tarkowski, Chilwell, Smalling, Monreal, Lowton
                      Mahrez, Mkhi, Salah, Sterling, Gross
                      Murray, Vardy, Lukaku

No cash left. Leaves me with two FT for GW34. (Probably lose Sterling & Mon for Azpi & Willian)

                        Ryan instead of Pope.
Defense is pretty weak and in attack you have a benching headache.

Replace one of Gross or Murray with a DGW bench fodder and try to get Alonso or at least Maguire.

Omit Pope at your own peril. He is a bonus pointv magnet in the Burnley team

I won't be going out with Pope, when Utd play City, Pope has Watford then he has Stoke in GW35 (Utd Blank) and Brighton at home in GW36 when Utd host Arsenal.

I wouldn't play Alonso for the Spurs game though and I did mention bringing in Azpi (I'm 0.2 short for Alonso).

                        totally agree!

because of this i'm prepared to keep more SGW's in my mid and up top and DGW's in defence as they look a lot more tempting

whos to say Lukaku will even score for example, wheras Firmino may get a brace in the 1 game and outscore him! i know lukaku has been scoring of late but i still trust the liverpool attack a lot more than Utd's

I wouldnt expect Kane to start at the weekend but he'll almost certainly be ready for Stoke then the DGW.

Since I don't like any cheap defenders other than Leicester and Burnley, is it viable to double up on Burnley defence? I have Mahrez as well, so this blocks getting Varyd before GW34.

However, I could simply get Vardy (for Auba) and then use the funds to trade one of the Leicester defenders to Azpi before GW34?

It doesn't lock me into transfers since I'd be happy to keep the Leicester defenders for the double.

I feel like this is a common issue, but I'm afraid going too much for DGW-ers might ruin my team.

I am considering getting rid of all my City and Liverpool (sans Salah) players which might be a big mistake.

Especially in defense players like Lowton and Morgan don't fill me with confidence.

How can I find the good balance?

                      Current team:

                      DDG, Ryan,
                      Alonso, Smalling, Morgan, Lowton, Dunk
                      Salah, Mahrez, Son/Sterling, Willian, Gudmunsson
                      Auba, Lukaku, Barnes

Happy with my WC team, but struggling to know who to bench this week. Please pick one of:

                      Def:

                      A) Morgan (away to BHA)
                      B) Soares (away to WHU)

                      Mid:

                      1) Willian (home vs TOT)
                      2) Gudmundsson (away to WBA)
                      3) Gross (home vs LEI)

                      Thanks!

GK question if on WC right now and NO FH left.

DDG and Ryan is popular but no game in 35.

How nice would a Salah red card be? a nice 3 match ban would make it so easy to move him on, upgrade Auba into Kane, and have no regrets

Salah never gets YC, let alone a RC. In a class of his own, even in the disciplinary sense.
