The Community Round Up

The search for value took centre stage this week as the community looked back on 2017/18’s best buys and ahead to next term’s potential bargains.

Our community writers focus on how the shopping habits of elite managers affected their campaign, together with a look at how strikers have declined as Fantasy assets.

Financial matters spilt out into our Hot Topic posts, where newly promoted budget gems and the return on investment of transfer hits were among the issues discussed.

Our latest round-up also reveals a raft of new recruits to our moderation team, and we even find time to go misty-eyed for the glory days of the FA Cup, with a look back at some of the competition’s greatest finals.

The Community Articles

Our community scribes’ analysis of 2017/18 continued into this week with WesManTooth’s excellent feature on the best value players.

Elsewhere, TopMarx dropped by with his end-of-season review on how the top five in the previous season’s Career Hall of Fame fared last time around. Part one focuses on a season of contrasting halves for two of this elite group, while part two concentrates on their player selections.

Top targets are also the subjecg of Mr Klin of Norway’s preview of the next set of fixtures in Norwegian top flight game Fantasy Eliteserien, and Niemi‘s follow up discussion on the best captaincy and transfer choices.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

One of the key findings to emerge from WesManTooth’s analysis was the poor value strikers offered last season. This prompted us to ask whether the popular 3-4-3 formation may be doomed and if Fantasy managers are best served by focusing on fielding more defenders and midfielders.

Jacky Boy added to the discussion with his Hot Topic on whether premium goalkeepers are worth the outlay.

But those interested in Aston Villa’s John Terry as a defensive gem, should the midlands side gain promotion, may want to swerve him for fixtures against Chelsea. As Berbinho’s Forehead points out there are strong rumours that the former Blues captain will be able to excuse himself for clashes against his ex-employers.

Chelsea got a further mention from Deulofail in his look at the value of two of their players, Marcos Alonso and Willian, to see who offered the best returns for their initial £7.0m price tag.

But neither of those players earned a mention in PVA‘s discussion on next season’s top scoring Fantasy asset, with Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang an early favourite according to those active in the chat.

The immediate return on investment involved from transfer hits was the focus of Triggerlips’ latest Hot Topic, as he looks to assess whether an aggressive approach in the market can reap the rewards.

Among the best value players was West Ham midfielder Marko Arnautovic, who produced 11 goals and seven assists. A price hike on his modest starting valuation of £7.0m looks inevitable. But he could be worth it given that the Hammers have recruited former Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini, according to Big P’s discussion on the Chilean’s potential impact at the London Stadium.

Arsenal are another London side with a new manager after Unai Emery was appointed this week. Geoff dropped by to assess the former Paris Saint Germain boss’s priorities.

The promoted sides, Cardiff, Wolverhampton and one of this weekend’s play-off finalists Aston Villa or Fulham, look set to deliver a raft of potential budget gems next season. With this in mind TheRumour Mill sparked an interesting discussion on how well Championship form translates to the top flight.

Elsewhere, this week we looked beyond the Fantasy Premier League to find out what other Fantasy formats the community plays and which they most enjoy. We also looked at broader footballing matters when we asked the community for their favourite FA Cup final memories.

Finally, Geoff, who from next week will be taking over the community round up, welcomed G-Whizz and Gregor, as well as Legomane and Rainy to his growing team of moderators.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

Also, if you are running a community tournament around the World Cup and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

            It’s my name and Jonty isn’t. 🙂

When I signed up as a punter about a decade ago it was the first thing that came into my head - think the reporter Jonty Bloom was on the radio at the time. Never thought I’d be using it professionally for half my working week.

Can I ask why people are favouring Cavani so much over Suarez as an option in Fantasy World Cup?

Didn't realise they were but Cavani was certainly more free scoring than Suarez through qualifying (though Suarez was equqlly as involved in the goals - just with more of a balance between goals and assists). I'd personally slightly prefer Suarez I think but not a lot in it.

Exactly. The TFF game involves a lot of planning. Without that you have absolutely no chance. I'd even go so far as to say getting lucky with a defensive block is required, I know for a fact decent players of this game are putting 10 teams in with different defensive block strategy with each one

Me too. I've got a few ideas but I think the most appealing is

              Russia -》 Uruguay -》Spain...

4 3 3 is dominant in TFF but tempted to go with a 5 man block

Starting with Samedov and Smolov . All out Russia for the first games . Risky but with 26 transfers in the group's you can afford a pot shot

BT Sport were kind enough to put free on Freeview/Sky etc. before.
Surely making it free means massive exposure for advertisers.
From what I gather BT Sport don't rake in much from subscriptions and entire operation being upheld by thier telephone/internet services and infacstructure payments.

Speaking as someone who has often featured in the articles, I'd just like to thank Joe for writing the community round up all these countless weeks.

I imagine it must be pretty time-consuming going through a week's worth of hot topics, community articles, members tables and leagues and neatly summing up everything that has happened in a few hundred words.

It had to have been a chore some weeks but I can safely say that the standard of writing and the level of professionalism never dipped, not for one second.

Thanks for putting all the time in, Joe. I'm sure it gave me and many others a little thrill to see our name in bold and up in lights on a Friday night.

Likewise - it’s been a while! Africa, Asia and Central/ North America’s qualifying have very little quality or challenge between them but someone has got to qualify from them - that’s how teams like Saudi and Panama make it!

As a neutral FPL'er, who are the genuine FPL options we'll be looking at from Fulham and Villa next season?

Obviously we want a one or two options to consider from each of the promoted sides...so, who should we be cheering on from an FPL point of view?

From the current squad Fulham are probably your best bet. Villa are more likely to have an overhaul after promotion. Fulham's team won't look too different to what it is now.

But from current players for Villa depending on price you're looking at Adomah and Snodgrass. Probably Snodgrass edging it because he's on most set pieces.

Grealish might be overpriced. He's the best player in the team but more often than not he'll be MOTM in the real world but assisting the assister and blanking for you in FPL.

What do you think of Brazil & Argentina's chances at the World Cup?

Amazing players, but do they lack the tactical discipline European sides have?

imo Brazil could get to the final with a well rounded squad but Argentina will do well to get out of the group with the state of their defence and defensive midfield.

Argentina won't get out the group. Brazil will struggle to score goals against the better European defences.

A mixture of their first and second string players (obviously minus Salah) drew 1-1 with Kuwait last night, Trezeguet came off the bench and did nothing. I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole but Salah will get plenty of backing.

Trezeguet is an insane talent that I would love to see in the premier league, there are rumuros linking him to Watford.

That being said, Egypt would be glad to reach the second round and our game under Hector Cuper is purely defensive. We rarely score or concede more than two goals. Lots of 1-0, 1-1, 2-1 scores always.

Casimero and Fernandinho are Brazil's most important players IMO. If they are going to play Marcelo and Danilo / Marquinhos at full-back then the two midfielders are going to have to do a lot of defending.

That statue was bad, but it's not a black or white decision as to whether it's worth not letting them back into the PL. Since Al-Fayed sold the club they've had plenty of time to look at the man in the mirror - but without question tomorrow's game will be a thriller.

Which WC teams will win all three of their group games this time out? It happened 4 times at the last World Cup and twice in 2010.

    My choices are:
Without question - Uruguay and Spain
Possible - Brazil, Germany, Belgium (or maybe even England), Colombia, Denmark

Are there any teams that people think I've under- or over-valued for success?

I'm too lazy to look at the groups, but I would go without the top teams who also play the other top teams during the first 2 matches, so that after they win their first 2 games they can still rest their players and have an easy 3rd match to finish things off.

If they win their first 2 matches and then rest their players against another top team in the 3rd game then obviously a loss is more likely.
