Community Round-up: Planning for World Cup Fantasy knockout rounds

The World Cup continues to dominate the Fantasy Football Scout Community as the Group Stages end and we head into the knockout rounds.

Strategies for dealing with elimination from World Cup Fantasy Round of 16 onwards have been discussed in our Hot Topics, while some of you were able to avoid the frustrating rotation in Round 3 with some smart thinking.

We’ve got more tables to bring you to help plan for the next round of the World Cup, and we’ve got an update from our array of community competitions.

The Hottest Topics

Not surprisingly, one of our earliest Hot Topics this week warned us of heavy rotation in Gameround 3 of World Cup Fantasy – which is exactly what we got in the end. In an attempt to pre-empt the inevitable changes to starting line-ups, Siva Mohan presented us with a list of players walking the suspension tightrope. Both of those subjects shaped the discussion on chip strategy for the round too.

The assist policy on McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy game was a much debated subject this week, as it differs considerably to what we’re used to with FPL. Legomane went over the goals scored in Uruguay’s 3-0 win over Russia to find out what you think of the two systems.

With team selection for the Last 16 opening up on McDonald’s game much was made of the price changes. 420king went over how they were caluclated while we asked how much money Fantasy managers had gained from the various increases throughout the game.

As the knockout stages are upon us, strategies to navigate the potential minefield of losing Fantasy assets to elimination were an important talking point. The deployment of chips formed a big part of that discussion, while captain tactics were too.

Amid all the World Cup action, we must not forget about Eliteserien. Legomane asked the community this week what their plans were for Gameweek 14 – this is what they said. Later on we asked you how you were hoping to handle Gameweek 15.

We have been also discussing the World Cup aside from Fantasy concerns. VAR has been a big talking point, with ZoumasBloomers starting a discussion about the benefits of the new technology. Meanwhile, we asked you to tell us your favourite World Cup moments so far and to make some predictions – this is what you said.

Community Tables

Those who are completely overhauling their World Cup Fantasy squads for the Round of 16 are in luck once again, as J0E has created two more very helpful tables and there’s Warwick’s Table as well.

The first one, entitled World Cup Sharp Shooters, sorts players by various aspects of their goal threat, suggesting that several premium forwards may be required in our squads for the knockout stages.

How profligate Germany were in their three Group F matches is highlighted in more detail in J0E’s other table, World Cup Chancers. This compares players on their chances of assisting and, aside from pointing out the Germans’ problems, demonstrates how dangerous Brazil will be in the latter stages of the World Cup.

Elsewhere, Warwick’s Table has been assessing the potential shown by players in Russia this summer.

Community Tournaments

With the World Cup Group Stages completed we’ve had time to have look at how our two McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy mini-leagues are getting on.

Niemi is currently leading the way in the Mods and Cons mini-league but has fierce competition elsewhere in the top five:

  1. Niemi (186 points)
  2. Legomane (183 points)
  3. Mat Williams (182 points)
  4. Gregor (174 points)
  5. David Munday (167 points)

As for our public league, there are some excellent scores in our top five:

  1. Hurrikane (220 points)
  2. Pascalevans (218 points)
  3. Eunuch999 (214 points)
  4. Tommobhoy (211 points)
  5. Kudin_88 (210 points)
  6. Lincon316 (210 points)

Frøgball, which uses combined Fantasy scores to represent different nations, threw up some rather interesting alternative World Cup results as the Group Stages ended. Find the latest update HERE.

Congratulations to Thes7s who was the clear winner of Jarvish‘s World Cup themed Yes/No game, with a score of seven. Beginning the game by only getting one of the first four questions correct, Thes7s successfully answered the final six in a row to become the champion.

If you are running a community tournament or are thinking about starting one, and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

    Hazard - Kane - Lukaku
    Isco - Modric - Coutinho
    Ramos - Maguire - Lovren - Meunier
    Muslera

    Olsen / Granqvist / 4.4 / 4.4

Going with 2 fodders in midfield, sod it. Not a fan of the low priced midfielders. Time to go to bed.

What does defense matter? You'd be benching your 3 lowest scoring outfield players anyway.

Most you can get from a BB from now is by having two keepers that get a CS. Yours look good enough, although not perfect.

I've gone for 6 most likely CS in the last round and got 1. Too much luck and VAR involved.

Like I said yours are good enough, specially if you are happy with the rest of your team.

      1. Dr. Ante Pavlovic

Im hoping that he will flunk against Brazil, Mexico will be hard to break, Ochoa loves to have big nights against the best teams. Trying it with De Bruyne instead, hasn't shown anything yet and is on free kicks, might have a part in trashing Japan. Also I think Dzemaili is a great differential, shoots more than swiss strikers.
As of Modric, did not have him as he seemed too expensive given the role and position he is playing. He is surely a leader of this team and main man, but I doubt that he will continie making fantasy impact, although he's on penalties.

Thanks for your answer! Yes I remember Ochoa from 4 years ago against Brazil, I've gone heavy on them myself so hoping that doesn't happen again 🙂 KDB and Dzemaili are both differentials that can do well, the only thing I worry is Boyata being dropped once all others are fit.

I've gone without Modric myself but it's the penalty part that worries me, VAR can be pretty crazy.

          1. Dr. Ante Pavlovic
            • 6 Years
            5 years, 10 months ago

Yeah it's very crazy with VAR but more fair. I have always been saying that it should be more penalties per game and that refferees are often ignoring obvious fouls because of cowardness. The only problem is that I have only one penalty kick taker in Kane.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback 🙂

Pretty good team! Specially digging the Stones pick although I'd probably pick Tripper first if I had to go with just one.
I'd also take another Belgium or Brazil defense before the 2nd Croatian, but only if I found the funds to do it.

I can afford Fagner but I'm not sure he will play and I can see Mexico getting at least a goal. I do like Tripps but I have a feeling that Stones has another goal in him and England will play set pieces right to him now because of the fact he has been successful already.

Yeah, Stones is pretty good at that. He did the same thing in Champions League last season and I'm buying him just because of that. Screw CSs! 😆

Mexico always capable of getting a goal but Brazil have only conceded 3 in last 14, had clean sheets against Germany, England, Croatia in that period. Think Uruguay has a better chance vs Portugal or hoping Godin scores?

Time to draft my team. Really do not know what I want to do since I have my WC and MC still.

Since you have your WC left just go with what you think will do best this round and don't worry about the rest.

Yeah, I realized that 🙁 But there are no much options and it's risk to go against the template.

So many RMTs with very few penalty takers. The way this world cup is going with VAR I'd want a minimum of 5 in my squad.

I like it except KDB. Silva a good diff pick. KDB simply plays too deep for Belgium.

Yea I know, I just have to take him. I think everyone in my ML is going with the Isco Modric Cout trio:/

Interesting, thought about Perisic as well, but your attack with Silva seems a bit weak considering everyone has a big trio up there. Not a fan of Modric if you already have Perisic. I would fo with Isco in for Modric and Mbappe in for Silva, but thats just me. Good luck.

Anybody else going with the R16 tactic of loading up the bench with Swiss & Swedes as back-up for last day?

What do you mean by back-up? Plan for them to be benched unless needed? Because they will be needed, you won't get 11 other players all hauling - I hope you do, but nobody is that lucky 😀

The way the draw panned out its nice to hope that only one or two will be needed. And don't need to think about subs until the final day 🙂

Well, looking at my team I now notice I have 6 players in the last day so I guess I agree! Probably going for bench boost now. Initial plan was to leave it until the semis, but I don't think I'll be able to afford all the players I want then without guys like Mojica, Quintero and Claesson.

One more, Isco or Modric? Think Modric might be a better value and on pens too but Isco is a focal point in his squad too:/

I have all my chips left including wc.. hahha

      my current squad is

      kane - lukaku - costa
      erikson - modric - coutinho - quintero - claeson

      a) stick
      b) change to griezeman (costa ), erikson (isco)

Personally I'd rather take a chance on Eriksen - if Denmark are knocked out as expected, it's no big deal to transfer him out on a WC. So I guess Costa and Eriksen from all the choices.

First draft - opinions needed. 1m ITB and WC available for later.

    Sommer / Ochoa
    Meunier / Godin / Lovren / Fagner / Granqvist
    Coutinho / Modric / Isco / Quintero / Inui
    Kane / Lukaku / Costa
