England World Cup influence on FPL transfer market shifts

Some Fantasy Premier League managers may have let England fever take over a little too much in their preparations for the new season this summer.

That’s because the ownership levels of Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m), stand-out performers at the World Cup, have surged in the last two weeks.

Such trust may prove to be misplaced as the trio are currently in danger of missing Gameweek 1 after returning to training later than their respective team-mates.

Trippier (24.8 percent) and Maguire (21.2) are now the two most popular defenders in FPL after just two weeks of the game being open.

The pair are clearly responsible for the two percent dip in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£5.0m) ownership, which has pushed him from first place to third when it comes to popularity among defenders.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains on 17 percent despite his role at Chelsea jeopardised by the arrival of Maurizio Sarri.

Jan Bednarek’s spell as the most fashionable £4.0m defender has come to an end, presumably due to Southampton’s signing of Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m). The new holder of that position is Scott Malone (£4.0m) with 11.1 percent ownership, although he appears to be the second-choice left-back behind Chris Lowë at Huddersfield.

Meanwhile, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has started both of Crystal Palace’s friendlies so far and resides in just 2.6 percent of squads.

Pickford’s rise up the charts may be the reason that David De Gea (£6.0m) has seen his lead at the top of the goalkeeper popularity contest trimmed.

The Spaniard enjoyed 34.6 percent ownership two weeks ago but now sits in just 31.6 of squads. Alternatively, the drop-off may have been caused by Jose Mourinho declaring that he was unlikely to use any World Cup players in the first few weeks of the season.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) remains in second place with 24.7 percent ownership but has lost two percent since our last check.

Just below the now third-place Pickford is Ederson (£5.5m) whose ownership remains stable at 17.4 percent, while Nick Pope (£5.0m) has lost two percent.

In midfield, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains comfortably the most popular player on the game, in 46.5 percent of squads.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) is in second place with 27.1 percent ownership with the much cheaper Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m) is the third most popular (21.4).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s (£11.0m) strong start to pre-season, scoring five goals in the first three matches, has him climbing up the forwards charts. He is now in fourth place with 24.2 percent of managers backing him for Gameweek 1, dislodging Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m).

Top two Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) seem to have been the most fashionable sacrifice for managers getting the Arsenal man. Both of them were on roughly 39 percent ownership two weeks ago, they now have 37.8 and 33.6 respectively.

Any way to spread cash more wisely for midfield than my current one? (no Salah)

    Mane Dilva* Martial Ramsey* 5.0

*Could be Mahrez + Mkhi or Sane +6.5

Think I want a 5.0 as fifth mid for a stronger bench

Then a 7.0 forward of your choice, then, and the same advice. The point is, Gundogan and Doucoure are, at best, illogical picks.

Auba worth the 1.5m over Laca in your opinion? It's a good chunk of money to save. Especially assuming we captain Salah most GWs?

1.5 is a lot though. If you plan on captaining Auba a decent bit, then yeah I see it. I just feel Laca had a better season than most think. I think he did well in the game time he got overall.

    Fab. 4.0
    Mendy. Coleman. Tompkins. Cedric. Lovren
    Salah. Eriksen. Martial. Costa. 4.5
    Aguero. Auba. 4.5

Lovren will be on bench whilst one of Cedric or Tomkins plays, till Lovren is back in team. A great value

Likely to play 4 at the back at the start of season also.

        I think it looks solid.
Martial to Mkhitaryan is the plan.
Costa should start every game. I could do with some wolves fans thoughts on Costa vs Neves to be honest.
Lovern won’t start first two weeks maybe. But I reckon he slots straight back in.

I think this place is sleeping on Keita. The guy has a work rate like Kante but can score goals and assists on top of it. Can see him putting Salah and Mane through on goal several times a game with his through balls. At 7.5 I think he’s a better value than the rest in that category.

Keita is a fantastic player. He will score goals assist and work like a machine.

But he takes up a spot and plays too deep for me. Mane salah firmino robertson and trent are better fpl options and i dont want to give up a precious liverpool spot to someone who might assist the assister more than anything else even if he may turn out to be the signing of the season

I like the thought of having Salah and one of Robbo or TAA along with Keita. It gives you the opportunity to fill another 9-9.5 slot with Eriksen, sane, Mahrez or whoever you want. If a bandwagon forms his price could skyrocket quickly and you will already be on him. If it doesn’t workout it’s an easy two move switch to Mané or Firmino and miki or Ramsey or gross or whoever. Liverpool fixtures are juicy to start and he looks very impressive to me. He loves the through ball to put his teammates in all alone. BPS magnet as well looks like.

Hello All. I hope you are looking forward to the new season.

If anyone is interested in joining a four division league of competitive managers, then please post your interest here (you'll have to create a Big Soccer account if you don't have one):

    http://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/final-2017-18-and-provisional-2018-18-all-rocks-leagues.2083458/

We use the FPL scoring system and will likely draft players outside of the FPL Draft using Big Soccer to post our picks. It takes a bit longer, but it gives you time to ponder your next selection and helps because we have players around the world. You'll start at the bottom league, but can get promoted and move up if you're active.

Let me know if you have any questions. We want to start drafting by next weekend.

    Hope you'll join. Cheers.

    Bob

Salah is a world class player, but for me £13.0m is too much unless you are willing to keep the captaincy on him permanently. I like having a couple of captaincy options and so it is a no to Salah for me.

No I just find the format difficult to compare in my head, seeing as one has a mid and forward and the other has two forwards.

In a vacuum, *probably* A, but that's the kind of decision that can only really be made when more information is available.

    Why I'm going Salah-less

If I pick Salah and all the 'seasoned pros' at fpl pick Salah I'm probably not going to win anyway whatever Salah does as their superior football knowledge will probably still be good enough to beat me.

But if I don't pick Salah and he doesn't perform as expected I could get ahead of the 'seasoned pros' on the leaderboard and give myself a chance at winning if I pick a decent Salah-less squad.

I know I can't win this game at the start of the season but if I play it safe at the beginning every year I will never win.

I see what you guys are saying. I guess my real reasons are that I also don't think he's worth the money and I can make a better team without him. But at the same time not picking him will be a big differential to better players than me and could put me on the front foot.

How much money will you save by going Salah-less? 3m, 4m.

Are there really good options out there making the 3m, 4m worthwhile?

Love to see your Salah-less team.

        Ederson - (4.0)
        Azpi - Tomkins - Bailly - Robertson - (4.0)
        Mahrez - Mane - Richarlison - (Costa) - (Kennedy)
        Auba - Aguero - Zaha

Not keen on that team. Without salah I think your be behind the 8 ball after 3 or 4 games.

Ultimately we are setting up our teams for the start of the season - not the next 38 weeks.

So much easier to start with Salah and downgrade later as other options and bargains present themselves.

If you start without him and then scramble to get him in after a few weeks, you are looking at an early wildcard.

My Salah-less team with 1.5 ITB is

        Ryan (Button)

        Mendy Robertson Douglas (Tomkins) (Wan-Bissaka)

        Mahrez Sigurdsson Maddison Hughes (Ralls)

        Aguero Auba Firmino

I've set it up to be flexible to try and avoid an early wildcard.

Midfield looks a little weak but these are the players I fancy atm. I will bring in a premium midfielder with the extra money when some of the World Cup players have come back if Maddison or Siggy are no good.

That's interesting as that happens to be my current back 7.

So in contrast, with 0 ITB, I have:

          SALAH, Mahrez, Mane, Mhiki (Chalobah)
          Aubameyang, Arnie (Sorloth)

Very interesting looking at your front 8 compared to mine.

I can still get Salah in with 2 transfers and probably have similar chance of having to wildcard compared to your team.

I guess I could be scrambling for Salah but you could be scrambling for Kane if you want to keep Auba too.

Absolutely - lots of ways to play the game and am always happy to consider any option.

At the same time, with Salah in my team I have made a commitment to only have one 10m+ player in my team (at least whilst team value is low).

So if I was scrambling for Kane, one of Salah or Auba would have to make way.

Best 4.5m goalkeeper to leave with a 4.0 option alongside?

Gotta be Fabianski ain’t it? Similar points to last year (in a relegated side) will provide best points/£ for £9.5 combined keeper budget?

ThinkIng of ignoring bad early fixtures as 38 games all become equal.

Lossl to make 22 points on Fab over season though to break even. Fair enough gamble but I reckon bookies would have Fab as favourite.

You might have a 4.5m GK all season if you decide to stick with him whatever happens....yeah I get the 2nd WC, double GW complications but still you could save a some budget and hits by sticking by a 4.5 option throughout.

I'm going for an expensive 5 at the back, the only other attackers cost at least 9m so have to bench one of these two along with 2 4.5s bench fodders.

Is it racism? He's German and is posing with the Turkish leader. Could easily be construed as showing support for him. He should have been smarter.

Posing with Erdogan is unsavoury and I thoroughly disagree with his attitude of "I would pose with the Turkish president whoever it was" but the fact that anyone, let alone the DFB president is trying to scapegoat him for the team's World Cup certainly isn't due to Özil's performances on the pitch (and I say that as an Arsenal fan who is still far from convinced that he's the one we should build the team around). They should be separate issues.

he was clearly picked on because of being Turkish. Erdogan was the UK only two months ago on a state visit. He had a picture with the leader of the country he has roots with. no big deal. seeing some of the responses to drip doctors comment shows he is right

Hardly. If there was an English player posing with Trump I would say the same. Don't go posing with leaders of a different nationality outside of football events. Only going to lead to trouble.

Whatever did I say about insulting his roots? If some fans are doing that, fine, that's wrong and i don't condone it. But what he did was completely wrong. Utterly and completely. He legitimised a piece of sh1t who has abused human rights on a national scale and is de-democratising Turkey. He deserves to be called out for what he did. Not racially abused, because that is wrong and also misses the while point about why we should be upset with him

Roast my team with honest opinions please:

    Ederson* (Steke)

    Roberston, Tomkins, Coleman, Cedric,

    Sane, Salah (C),Jota*, Ramsey,

    Firmino, Auba,

    Subs: Kamara, Bennett, Masuaku

*Would possibly move Ederson to Schmichel if he moves to Chelsea
    * Jota could possibly swap to Richarlison

Too much rotation for City at the start so would rather wait and see who's on fixed and getting points after first 2 weeks.

Sane and Mahrez seem the only ones on the pre season tour now who will be match fit and weren't at the WC.

Playing a Draft like Mini-League ( Can get any player you want within the 100.00 budget but can't get a player that an other team have after the first GW) what do you think of this team , and what players do you think they are a must have for a long term team :

    Fabianski / Foster

    Cedric - Tomkins - Daniels - Doherty - 4.0

    Salah - Sane - Jota - Caireny - Ward

    Kane - Aubameyang - Tosun
