Pre-Season

Weekend friendly round-up: Arnautovic bags brace, Valencia injured

Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) furthered his case for inclusion in Fantasy managers’ frontlines with a brace in West Ham United’s pre-season friendly against Preston North End on Saturday.

Jack Wilshere (£5.0m) made his debut in the same match, as the Hammers were held to a 2-2 draw by the Championship club.

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m), who like Arnautovic has been reclassified as a forward in Fantasy Premier League this season, was also on target in Crystal Palace’s 3-1 win over Oxford United.

Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) set up Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) for Liverpool’s opening goal in the 3-1 defeat by Borussia Dortmund in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sunday evening. Joel Matip (£5.0m) was forced off early in the first half with a thigh injury.

Dortmund had beaten Manchester City 1-0 a day earlier, with Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) and Leroy Sane (£9.5m) both getting run-outs for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Manchester United were also in action in the USA, taking on San Jose Earthquakes in California. Jose Mourinho’s side drew the match 0-0 as Antonio Valencia (£6.5m) limped off with a calf problem. Alexis Sanchez (£10.5m) and Anthony Martial (£7.5m) both started the match as part of a front three with youngster Tahith Chong.

Rui Patricio (£4.5m) and Raul Jimenez (£5.5m) made their Wolverhampton Wanderers debuts in the 0-0 draw with Bochum on Sunday. Patricio saved two penalties in the subsequent shoot-out defeat.

A largely second-string Everton side also lost on penalties over the weekend after a goalless draw with Lille. A stronger-looking line-up then drew another blank in the 1-0 loss to Porto on Sunday night.

Jonny Evans (£5.0m) and James Maddison (£6.5m) made their Leicester City debuts in the Foxes’ 4-1 win over Notts County, with Demarai Gray (£5.5m) among the scorers.

A Fulham side that featured Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m), Tom Cairney (£5.0m) and debutant Jean Michael Seri (£5.5m) were hammered 4-0 by Lyon.

AFC Bournemouth highlighted their attacking aptitude – and defensive frailties – in a 4-3 win over Levante, with Jermain Defoe (£6.0m) among the Cherries’ scorers.

Shane Duffy (£4.5m) and Jurgen Locadia (£5.5m) limped off as Brighton and Hove Albion slumped to a 2-1 defeat to AFC Wimbledon. Oliver Norwood was on target for the Seagulls from the spot.

Huddersfield Town and Burnley both played two friendlies over the weekend. The Terriers lost 2-0 to Real Betis and 1-0 to Werder Bremen (both matches lasting 45 minutes) in Germany, while Sean Dyche split his squad for the encounters with Macclesfield Town and Curzon Ashton. Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) was on target in the 2-0 victory at Moss Rose, while Robbie Brady (£5.5m) returned from injury in the 5-1 win over the National League North side. Ben Mee (£5.0m) found the back of the net in this second match, with Sam Vokes (£5.5m) grabbing a brace.

Summer signing Josh Murphy (£5.0m) scored Cardiff City’s only goal in the 1-1 draw with Torquay United.

Our Scout Notes on Monday will analyse the weekend’s friendlies in greater depth, taking a closer look at personnel and formations and detailing every single goal-scorer and assist-maker.

    Quick RMT.

At the start of the season,I always tend to stick to the structure and almost always WC during the first Intl Break. So how does this look?

    McCarthy Button
    Robertson PVA Bailly Peltier Bennett
    Salah Mahrez Martial Costa Masuaku
    Aguero Firmino Tosun

    Key points:
    1.McCarthy-Till GW 4,Southampton have great fixtures.Hence McCarthy.
2.PVA-Though plenty will ask me to go against PVA,he is the most attacking defender in the league and with Palace's fixtures,he looks too good to turn down.
3.Bailly-The best CB in the meanest defence in the league.Nailed when fit.
4.Bennet,Peltier-Nailed for the start of the season. You cannot ask much more from 4.0m players.
5.Mahrez-Will start for the Blues.Has a higher ceiling than Silva and a lower price than Sane.
6.Costa-The differential. Can't wait to see him in action.
    7.Martial-OOP at 7.5 for a top club.No brainer.Easy to switch for the likes of Ramsey/Mkhi from GW3.

Agreed with 1,will monitor preseason to find out who gets the nod.All having the same price makes things easy.My gut feeling is that McCarthy will be no1.
Agreed with 2 as well, but I so like the fact that he can get goals. With those fixtures,I just feel he could catch fire.

Martial is unwilling to play for ManU, and ManU doesn't play attacking footbal. Martial is class on his day though.

I don't know if it's a specific article, it's more a feeling that the articles have become soulless and template-y. The lack a human touch imo, that they used to have. Perhaps I am just old ^^

Out of curiosity, what would you do or have done differently?

I agree the rise in popularity of the site has diluted the advice and given rise to the prominence of a template team - but rather than leave the site why not suggest something that makes it better.

My issue, and why I'm not getting membership this season (aside from the fact that I hardly used it in the 2nd half of last season) is that I don't think this sort of article helps people get better at FPL at all. It's just "stuff". Articles of "stuff" make people feel smart because they follow football closely and know what players scored and when, but that's not all that useful for building, managing and succeeding long term with your team. FPL is a decision making game, so we should be looking at fundamental reasons why decisions are good/bad. Because most people haven't refined their thought process beyond "my player scored, I am excellent at FPL" or "damn, I chose the wrong player. Should've picked the other guy", the mechanism to improve decision making isn't really there.

Are you talking about the above article?

Update notes articles have always been a big part of the site so that people know what's happening - or are you talking about other articles?

To be fair, membership isn't about getting access to this article, it's the Members data, RMT, projections, tools, Members Articles, and now Members Only Hot Topics 😉

Which articles just feel like 'stuff'?

Most of them tbh, and I find myself not reading them. Maybe it's more a reflection on me because I'm trying to find a way to spend less time on FPL without sacrificing the ability to score well. Not hating, just expressing thoughts. 🙂

              Appreciated!

I think that for me there was a point, when I'd been a user for many years, that the content in some of the articles was no longer new because I had the basics down.

It's easy to say the content has changed but maybe it's us 😀

Then I started looking for more specific information. I wonder if that plays it for others too

I think there are too many. I don't really read them these days to be honest. They are way too numbers focused for my liking but that's down to my personal preference and I don't care for stats as they don't really tell a story . Id like more opinion based articles myself from people who follow teams or watch players . I used to love the Scout pick article but since they changed the format I don't like it as much. So they don't really offer me anything

There needs to be something put into place soon . Another very respectable place i use only allow one RMT per user name because they know no one likes them. The mods are on top of everything ( not trying to offend the mods) They know what their users want and the leeches and trolls dont last 2 mins Perhaps put out a survey to ask where it can be improved and actually take action?. You got rid of the lol post , now let's get rid of all this take, take, take. Quality of the site has took one hell of a beating. It's a sad fact and yes it's derived from the influx of posters who are just here solely for themselves . I could give you a list Geoff if you want one

Which of these players are at risk of not being on the pitch? How many minutes do you expect them to play? Is there anyone in this list who will play 3420 minutes?

    A. Robertson
    B. Pedro

    D. Walcott
    E. Mkhitaryan

Well you cant tell when the fixtures get congested, but I think that A and F are going to play almost every minute with D and E suspect to fitness, B to Hazard/Willian leaving and no winger signing, C you dont want anyway and Kolasinac is not gonna get many mins I think

      1. banskt
        • 10 Years

Hey, thanks. I was also thinking in similar directions. But, I was thinking Walcott and Mkhitaryan might miss game time even if they are fit.

        I want Kolasinac to play.

Benteke didn't play good last year. But he has been a consistent 15 goal forward in the EPL. Now, with that price, I am looking at him. Just need to find out his involvement.

          • 8 Years
          5 years, 10 months ago

Sorloth is a threat to Benteke. Also, he has hardly been a 'consistent 15 goal forward' - only reached the 15 goals margin twice in six seasons.

Chelsea are out of Europe, so Azpilicueta will likely not get as rotated as the others, IF he cements his place under Sarri. Chelsea out of Europe is a huge boost for their points in PL and I think if Hazard stays he'll be a top 3 midfielder this season, but he'll likely be eased in after the World Cup.

D and E are interesting, going to give them a couple of weeks to see how their new managers use them.

Not sold on Spurs, United or Chelsea assets right now. Spurs have a ton of players on the beach, the Jose effect is in full force at United, and still quite a bit of uncertainty at Chelsea with the new setup. I’ve gone with:

    Fabianski Foster

    Robertson Coleman Douglas Cedric Peltier

    Salah Sane Mkhi Sessegnon Kenedy

    Aguero Tosun Zaha

(I wish I had the balls to go without Salah).

So currently City have 5 of the Top 10 highest performing mids last season. After their opening fixtures away to the Gunners, they have the following run: HUD, wol, NEW, FUL, car, BRI. Last season they scored 106 goals, 22 goals more than the team in second place, Liverpool. Memorably, they also went on a run early on in the season, smashing teams by scoring 5, 6 even 7 goals a game.

During the HUD to BRI run, it stands to reason they could score 30+ goals. That's 60+ returns spread around a (suprisingly small, I'd argue) set of players, most of which should play the majority of these games.

What I'm getting at is the idea of TRIPLING up on City mids, given the uncertainty and lack of captaining Kun/Jesus. Even if a City mid misses the odd game, they can still easily outscore all other mids on other teams. We saw this last year with Sterling, where people were afraid of getting him due to his apparent 'unnnailedness' yet he continued racking up returns sandwiched between double figure hauls, even when coming off the bench.

Something I'm proposing is below, where the 5th mid and 2nd forward can be altered to accomodate lower premium FWDs like Bobby F:

    Patricio.
    Robertson. Coleman. Tomkins.
    Salah(c). Sane. Mahrez. Silva. Eriksen.
    King. Wood.

    Subs: 4.0GK. Daniels. Bennett. Kamara.

Whilst premium forwards do loom large, this structure could easily power you through City's amazing run, with the idea to WC in a few GWs time to get in any FWDs that start firing. You could also easily swap to premium mids, and even get in KDB with minor surgery when he returns.

Dont like the idea of not having a forward. Having to make big changes to fit one in.

I don't think cthat matters. What matters is maximum coverage during City's incredible run. They are by FAR the best attacking team in the league. Even Pool can't score anywhere near 5, 6, 7 goals a game, for several games in a row. An tripling up on City mids is IMO the best way to cover that.

I understand that you will need CIty cover but you not fancy the likes of Kun, Jesus, Walker, Mendy?

AT the start of the season Pep started to play both Jsus and Kun together. 5-3-2 (Wing backs)

Very interesting - switch Eriksen for Mane for the early part of the season, and that midfield looks terrifying for the start of the season.

At the same time, does Mendy provide better value, if he starts the season? And if rotation is inevitable, is the bench strong enough to accommodate that?

Do agree, they look too good early on and I want 3. Personally I'm going with Mendy, Dilva and Kun tho. I think they could play Mendy as a wing back and with the cleansheet potential, I think he could be their highest scorer over those weeks. I think the goals/assists will be spread out so evenly that Dilva for his price is as good as the likes of KDB, Sané, Mahrez anyway. And as for Kun, I think he's pretty nailed

I have said here that i think the 352 is better when we have a 102m budget, but this could actually work. No doubt those 5 mids will score well during the season.

Quick question, as Engliah is not my mother tongue:

Does "on target" always mean "scored a goal"?

Never heard this expression used for all goal scoring situations.

    1. Chandler Bing

On target means the shot was either a goal or would've been a goal if it wasn't saved by the keeper.

If the article reads "Salah was on target", it means he scored. But if he had "a shot on target", it just means he had an accurate shot at the goal - whether or not he scored with the shot would be unclear.

If a shot hits the woodwork, it is not considered "on target" - unless it hits the post/bar and goes in or was originally going in but was tipped onto the woodwork by the keeper.

New to the website and I've been wondering... Do Mark and the guys normally do a FFS team? I've been on other sites previously and I know they do so I'm assuming so. Just wanted it confirmed and an idea of where the team tends to finish?

Yes - they all have teams and discuss them on the weekly Scoutcasts which are well worth tuning into.

Needless to say, they all have very good pedigrees (I think Mark finished top 150 recently?).

        Sounds promising then.

Do they reveal the teams and the thought process behind structure/picks in a weekly article for if I don't have time to listen to a full podcast?

        Sorry for the clueless questions!

Not on here. Scoutcast, their podcast, gives an idea, but because it's early in the week often their decisions are very different a few days later.

It's all in the Scoutcast I'm afraid - although they do chip-in on the forums regularly once the season starts. No formal articles though. Mark provides his general thoughts in an article directly before the matches start ("Pre-match preamble") but by then the deadline has passed.

For a Salah-less team, think it looks strong - although is your bench strong enough considering the risk of rotation from some of your players?

Personally, I don't rate Daniels (or any Bournemouth defender) as an option when you have Tomkins/Cedric/Boly etc as options. And would rather go Arnie over Zaha - but that's purely subjective. Someone like Wood or Austin would generate a bit of extra cash to strengthen your bench a little.

Thanks for the productive feedback. Really good points, indeed. Daniels will definitely go. I prefer Zaha to Arnie, purely based on fixtures, but can easily switch to anyone withing this price range if needed - its merely a placeholder.
Honestly, I only see Mendy as a rotation risk, but will probably switch him to someone else once we have more data as the pre-season unfolds.

Shades of 2014 Ron Vlaar - was linked with United after reaching the final with his NT, eventually stayed at Villa and got relegated with them the following season in quite spectacular fashion.

Small sample size, a few accurate headers won't change the fact that Mina is unwanted at Barca and is generally a poor defender.
