Pre-Season

Weekend friendly round-up: Arnautovic bags brace, Valencia injured

Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) furthered his case for inclusion in Fantasy managers’ frontlines with a brace in West Ham United’s pre-season friendly against Preston North End on Saturday.

Jack Wilshere (£5.0m) made his debut in the same match, as the Hammers were held to a 2-2 draw by the Championship club.

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m), who like Arnautovic has been reclassified as a forward in Fantasy Premier League this season, was also on target in Crystal Palace’s 3-1 win over Oxford United.

Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) set up Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) for Liverpool’s opening goal in the 3-1 defeat by Borussia Dortmund in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sunday evening. Joel Matip (£5.0m) was forced off early in the first half with a thigh injury.

Dortmund had beaten Manchester City 1-0 a day earlier, with Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) and Leroy Sane (£9.5m) both getting run-outs for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Manchester United were also in action in the USA, taking on San Jose Earthquakes in California. Jose Mourinho’s side drew the match 0-0 as Antonio Valencia (£6.5m) limped off with a calf problem. Alexis Sanchez (£10.5m) and Anthony Martial (£7.5m) both started the match as part of a front three with youngster Tahith Chong.

Rui Patricio (£4.5m) and Raul Jimenez (£5.5m) made their Wolverhampton Wanderers debuts in the 0-0 draw with Bochum on Sunday. Patricio saved two penalties in the subsequent shoot-out defeat.

A largely second-string Everton side also lost on penalties over the weekend after a goalless draw with Lille. A stronger-looking line-up then drew another blank in the 1-0 loss to Porto on Sunday night.

Jonny Evans (£5.0m) and James Maddison (£6.5m) made their Leicester City debuts in the Foxes’ 4-1 win over Notts County, with Demarai Gray (£5.5m) among the scorers.

A Fulham side that featured Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m), Tom Cairney (£5.0m) and debutant Jean Michael Seri (£5.5m) were hammered 4-0 by Lyon.

AFC Bournemouth highlighted their attacking aptitude – and defensive frailties – in a 4-3 win over Levante, with Jermain Defoe (£6.0m) among the Cherries’ scorers.

Shane Duffy (£4.5m) and Jurgen Locadia (£5.5m) limped off as Brighton and Hove Albion slumped to a 2-1 defeat to AFC Wimbledon. Oliver Norwood was on target for the Seagulls from the spot.

Huddersfield Town and Burnley both played two friendlies over the weekend. The Terriers lost 2-0 to Real Betis and 1-0 to Werder Bremen (both matches lasting 45 minutes) in Germany, while Sean Dyche split his squad for the encounters with Macclesfield Town and Curzon Ashton. Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) was on target in the 2-0 victory at Moss Rose, while Robbie Brady (£5.5m) returned from injury in the 5-1 win over the National League North side. Ben Mee (£5.0m) found the back of the net in this second match, with Sam Vokes (£5.5m) grabbing a brace.

Summer signing Josh Murphy (£5.0m) scored Cardiff City’s only goal in the 1-1 draw with Torquay United.

Our Scout Notes on Monday will analyse the weekend’s friendlies in greater depth, taking a closer look at personnel and formations and detailing every single goal-scorer and assist-maker.

They would be my 3 choices - although Patricio looks an interesting option too.

Read that Joao Moutinho could be joining from Monaco shortly.....

How far forward / Attacking does Keita play? Seen him in a few teams but didn't realise he had potential for attacking returns?

Seen his stats, 40 goals in 140 games (a bunch in Austria) - 17 in 58 Bundesliga games, not too bad I suppose but feel it's a waste of a Liverpool spot and at 7.5 is there better options elsewhere? (Mkhi / Siggy / Martial / Willian if he's favoured)

    He in your squad?

so far Liverpool missing their front four, but as much as these trainingmatches counts, i think Keita could be a decent shout at 7.5m. Nailed and playing style means he will get some assist, a goal here and there and bonus magnet i guess. Downside, yellow cards. From that lot, only Mkhi and Siggy is nailed, and Keita could be a cheaper route into Liverpools attack, at least in the start of season. But it poses a conundrum, it does yes.

Thanks for that. Very close to what I have. While I don't like the idea of planning transfers ahead of time, I am defo looking at shaw moving to Lovern after the first few gws. Was also considering martial and moving to miki/Rambo for gw3. I like this set up and while it lacks an 11m forward, I think it gives great flexibility. Appreciate the reply so thank you

Similar to me (So pretty good 😉 )- but that front line looks weak to me

I'm here so far - depending on how those who've been at the world cup fare preseason:

      Pickford (4.0)
      Daniels / Coleman / van Dijk (Cedric / 4.0)
Jota / Richarlison / Eriksen / Salah (Ward)
      Arnautovic / Kane / Tosun

    Gunn
    Shaw Bailly Coleman Robertson
    Salah Mahrez Jota
    Aguero Firmino Zaha

    4.0 Cairney 4.5 4.0

Gunn will change if it doesn’t look like he will start the season first choice. Feel like I need a Burnley defender as well?

Looking at getting one of the 7.5 mids to start the first few weeks, it will be a placeholder for either Mkhitaryan if he's looking good or Pogba when he returns. Who's the best pick?

    A) Martial
    B) Sigurdsson
    C) Willian
    D) Ramsey
    E) Start with Mkhitaryan anyway

    Cheers

Willian might be off to Barcelona.
Martial could be on the bench GW2. I’m also currently on him but not sure.
If Richarlison is at Everton he might be worth it over Siggy for 1m less.
Prefer Ramsey over Mkhi but Arsenal’s first 2 fixtures are tough and maybe it’s just worth waiting to see who’s the best Arsenal mid might be Ozil.

It’s a tough call I’m probaly going with Ramsey or Martial. Willian only if he stays and looks nailed for pre season.

Still think Siggy is nailed and good pick out of those. But I’ll go with Richarlison for sure for 1m less and try my luck with another 7.5m mid. One of the Arsenal mids will definitely pop up in 2-3 gameweeks.

How’s this 4-5-1 looking? Pondering Utd defenders over PVA/Douglas/Coleman... but don’t like the rotation factor. KDB & Pogba earmarked for long term midfield slots when they get back:

          Ederson
          VVD, PVA, Douglas, Coleman
          Salah, Sané, Dilva, Jota, Mili

You think Shaw will play then? I'd read he's fighting for a place preseason - but looks really risky still.

Yeah. So not a long term prospect. I'd be tempted to ditch the risks. Early season CS are absolute gold dust and can elevate a team while folk scramble for the surprise form midlfielders - so any def over 4.5 needs to start consistently IMO.

Are Holebas & Kiko Feminia fit/nailed?
Haven't seen too many teams with them in, and Watford don't have bad fixtures until GW4?

I suspect they are both dead as options now - new full-backs have been signed, and the manager has only ever played Kiko as an emergency OOP.

          RMT please! Any suggestions?

          Patricio / Foster
          Robertson / Bailly / Tomkins / Cedric / Wan-Bissaka
          Salah / Mahrez / Richarlison / Jota / Ward
          Aubameyang / Firmino / Wood

          A) One of GK to a 4.0 could fund Wood to Arnautovic. Worth it or not?
          B) Better 4.5 than Cédric?
          C) Mahrez & Richalison look okay, or too risky?

All these playmakers around him and a chance of being the penalty taker makes him an exciting prospect.

Saw an interesting article when a guy checked how many games on average players from QF of WC missed at start of a season. Think was past 3 wc. 90% were back gw 2. Keepers all started gw 1

He took days into account but the averages was pretty similar give or take 3 days.

I'm guessing it depends on how far those teams went. With this years world cup knocking out so many of the top teams I'm guessing the figure will be higher.

Nobody really knows, but some have suggested GW1 based upon statements from Kane addressing the 'not scoring in August' voodoo

I went for Kane start of last season. Dropped him. He went on a small run. WC'd and got him in. Injured. Awful to own. hard to drop. Hard to get back. So just think stick him in and leave it.

Not sure on the defence. Alonso may not be that effective under the new manager.
Alonso > Robertson and upgrade one of the 4m defender's?
Midfield looks good, but so hard to balance whole team trying to accommodate Salah.

I don't get the Richarlison love? He didn't score after GW18 of last season. His performance basically nosedived. I think he's in the 'wait and see' basket despite his move to Everton.

He's a good player. IF he moves to Everton he'll start and get an advanced role.

So yeah, totally a wait and see. But I can see the love. A 6.5m attacking MF with Everton's fixtures and a bad smell to wash away with all their players fit, inc. an in form Keeper and Coleman back. It can't go as wrong as last season (please god!)

His defensive work is really good, which is arguably not that common for an attacking midfielder. He brings the ball out from the back really well too, which helps makes transitions faster. It's not just about goals imo.

          My team so far:

          GK- Foster & Fabianski

          DF- Daniels,Tomkins, Cédric, Dunk, Zanka

          MF-Sané, Milivojevic, Salah, Mkhitaryan, Neves

          FW- Aubameyang, Firmino, Zaha

Tossing up between Zaha & Arnautavic and downgrading Salah for some more upscale defenders such and Trippier, Alexader Arnold, Ward & Allison in goal instead of Foster.but dont want to get burnt for not having Salah if he explodes like last year.Open to suggestions? Thanks

If you don't want to pay for Robertson, you might as well get Lovren for 5.0m.
