Best Southampton players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

After four successive top-half finishes, each achieved as their best players (and the occasional manager) were picked off by “bigger” clubs, Southampton diced with death in 2017/18.

A run of one win in 21 fixtures between late-November and the end of April left the Saints in the relegation zone with just four matches to spare, before Mark Hughes steered the club to Premier League safety with victories over Bournemouth and Swansea City.

Hughes’ appointment in March not only sparked an upturn in form but also led to a change of system, with the Welshman ditching Mauricio Pellegrino’s 4-2-3-1 in favour of a 3-4-2-1 – the repercussions of which for Fantasy managers we will discuss later.

Southampton assets weren’t a reliable source of points for Fantasy Premier League bosses last season: of the current squad, only Ryan Bertrand broke the 100-point barrier.

Charlie Austin‘s campaign was, once again, hampered by injury, while frequent rotation in the centre-back positions (not one centre-half made more than 30 starts) meant that the likes of Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens proved to be undependable budget defensive picks.

Not that the Saints’ defence was an attractive proposition anyway – only Bournemouth and Stoke City kept fewer clean sheets in the Premier League than Southampton (eight) last season.

That Austin, who made only ten starts and 14 substitute appearances, finished as the Saints’ leading league goal-scorer on seven goals said a lot about Southampton’s struggles in the opposition box, too.

The south coast club’s decent-looking opening run of fixtures this season – Burnley (h), Everton (a), Leicester City (h), Crystal Palace (a), Brighton and Hove Albion (h) – are inviting from a Fantasy perspective, but the Saints’ woes last season are evidently still at the forefront of many FPL managers’ minds; Cedric Soares is the only Southampton player who currently has a double-digit ownership.

In-depth data on Southampton’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

5 votes saying this is idiotic and I will need a WC or multiple hits after GW1 or I stick with it 🙂
    Seriously I really like this.
Could change Bailly to Monreal / Bellerin and Siggy to Ramsey depending how it looks for GW3

    Fab

    Mendy Robertson Bailly Jag

    Salah Sane Mahrez Siggy Pedro

    Aubameyang

    Speroni Wan-Bissaka Kamara Quaner

        Thanks will consider.
What I am most playing about with is

        Fab + Mendy
Or Ederson and 5.0 defender - probably a Burnely one. What you think?

If you think Mendy faces threat of rotation then Ederson combo can be considered. Sakho over Burnley defenders who are involved in EL.

Fine if you think your mids are good but have doubts. Really just about who better Mahrez or Firmino, Siggy or Zaha and so on. Could easily work fine.

Yeah that's all it is really.
But the added risk if Auba does not start I might only get 10 out -that would hurt.

Jag, the two city mids and no bench would be concerns. Plenty of good value in 6.5 to 7.5 mids to help spread out the funds across those aforementioned areas

Nice balance considering how strong the front 3 is.
TAA has a threat from Clyne?
2 Che mids might be pushing it a bit.

        Thanks.

Yeah I reckon maybe TAA might be a bit of a gamble. My plan for the two chelsea mids is to bring in Ramsey/Mikky for either one in GW3. Guess I just have to watch the friendlies closely, but Willian is for me one of the best values in the mix.

What about one 4.5 forward and just a 4.5 keeper.
Then you can have a decent second striker.
If you want to go 451 it all or nothing I think. Thanks for reply above.

seeing it with names i'd be worried about the lack of flexibility it gives you.
there is only really one forward you can rely on forcing you to play all mids whatever the fixture.
listing 3 mids all new to premier league would worry me-maybe kenedy would help you.
your defence and keeper are solid

    7. Rock n Grohl
      • 13 Years
      5 years, 9 months ago

4-5-1 being the idea but appreciate the input. If Reid or Niasse and or the spare 4.5 defender hit good fixtures and selection this does offer a degree of flexibility. The midfield is considerate of risk but could also easily pay off given the fixtures ahead of them.

Reasonably happy with team, but want to have a City defender - so maybe Van Aanholt => Mendy.

I wouldn't get Wood if you're going to bench him. If you're unsure about Mkhi you can always downgrade Wood to a bench fodder and upgrade, or vice versa.

      1. Flaming Flamingo

I just put 1 from each position on subs bench but Wood was likely not going to be just bench fodder (mostly playing 3-4-3 given 2 cheap defenders)

didn't realise Forster wasn't first choice, I got him cause rotates with Fabianski well. Not sure who else I'd get

    Patricio, Foster.
PVA, Robertson, Shaw, Wan- Bissaka, Cook.
Richarlison, D Silva, Mane, Sanchez, Stephens.
    Aubameyang, Firmino, Austin.
    0.0m in the bank.

Difficult to tell as all of them are prone to rotation. Now you have Sane, Sterling, Mahrez and B Silva competing for 2 wingers spots. Expect Guardiola to rotate his team accordingly to opponents. Wld probably avoid City players after first 2 weeks.

Mahrez & Sane both nailed for the first 2 games. After that, it's a coin toss based upon performances/fatigue/tactics.

Auba I will have 3 City.
If I plan Kun out for Auba getting a third City is another transfer.

Kun is class but never plays enough minutes. Plus Auba can be just as good and will get more minutes and I am prepared to live with the first 2 difficult fixtures. Who knows Auba may deliver in these fixtures too.

Ahhh Fantasy PL season is back. Time to say goodbye to having a life. What do y'all think of my first draft? Thanks in advance!

agree with 32 but overall it's good.
The punts need to work out though. Maybe 1 more solid nailed mid to avoid pain down the line if it all goes pear shaped.

0.5 left itb, where is it best suited?

    A) 4.5 GK
    B) Mahrez > Eriksen
    C) Rich > Mkhi
    D) Wood > Arnie

    Patricio / 4.0
Robbo Mendy Bailly / Tomkins 4.0

    Kun Firmino Wood

both utd and citys def are decimated, utd more so, and none of the teams have a rhythum yet. Arsenal are in a better state gw1 so its a good time for them to play the top 4.

i like chelseas new manager and morata is under valued so i might put him in instead of laca but i like the dubs arsenal atm

Against Porto, Silva named the same back-five that lined up against Bury, having deployed a largely second-string side the previous day in a defeat to Lille. Not surprisingly, Leighton Baines (£5.5m) and Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) were stationed on the flanks of the defence in front of Maarten Stekelenburg (£4.0m), who made his fourth start in a row with Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) still away on World Cup leave. Phil Jagielka was the £4.5m man who slotted in beside Michael Keane (£5.0m), for his second start of the season. If he continues to be deployed in the back four, the former Sheffield United man may become the budget way into Everton’s defence, although he still faces competition from Ashley Williams (£4.5m), Mason Holgate (£4.5m) and Cuco Martina (£4.5m) – later pre-season matches will tell us more.

Nailed one from a team that rotates well with the "most likely to get benched" player from your first 11. Or you could go with either Cedric or Tomkins.

Richarlison seems like click-bait. Yey or nay?

      Yes

EVE is turning into Spurs from a few years back when they had more attacking mids than any other type of player. Rotation nightmare for the first few weeks imho. Which is a shame with their good fixtures.
