More pre-season problems for Man United as Liverpool dominate

There were contrasting fortunes for Manchester United and Liverpool in their pre-season meeting this weekend.

While Jurgen Klopp’s side once again looked like a team worth trusting with Fantasy Premier League investment, the reasons to avoid Manchester United continue to grow.

We’ve taken a look at the big clash for Scout Notes…

Manchester United 1-4 Liverpool

  • Goals: Andreas Pereira | Sadio Mané (£9.5m), Daniel Sturridge (£6.0m), Sheyi Ojo, Xherdan Shaqiri (£7.5m)
  • Assists: None | Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Shaqiri, Andrew Robertson (£6.0m), Ben Woodburn

Manchester United’s defensive woes worsened over the weekend as they were thrashed 4-1 by Liverpool in Michigan. Chris Smalling (£6.0m) pulled up in the warm-up and was forced out of the game, while Luke Shaw (£5.0m) sat out the match too. That meant that Eric Bailly (£5.5m) had to play in the meeting while carrying an injury himself, and Jose Mourinho also revealed that Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) would miss the start of the season.

“Smalling? I’ve no idea (about a return). Shaw? I’ve no idea. Matic had a surgery. Yes, of course (he is out for the start of the season). I don’t know (about a return). He came from the World Cup with an injury and the time he had to rest in the holiday was not enough to resolve the problem.”

Such a slew of injuries could seriously damage United’s clean sheet prospects for the beginning of the season with Antonio Valencia (£6.5m) potentially out for a month, Diogo Dalot (£5.5m) not available until September and Marcos Rojo (£5.0m) and Matteo Darmian (£5.0m) destined for exits. There hasn’t been too much interest in the Red Devil’s defenders thus far, Bailly the most popular with just 5.8 percent backing. However, David De Gea (£6.0m) has become the most fashionable shot stopper and he could be set for some sales in the coming days. Since Friday, the Spaniard has already lost 0.4 percent ownership, with Ederson (£5.5m) or Alisson Becker (£5.5m) potential alternatives to the United man.

Man United were equally poor at the opposite end of the field, mustering just three shots on goal. One of those was Andreas Pereira’s impressive first-half free-kick but forward players Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) and Juan Mata (£6.5m) were starved of service playing in front of a second-string midfield. Anthony Martial (£7.5m) was not involved again and it looks as if the problems are mounting for Mourinho, which may put Fantasy managers off owning United assets.

“Antonio Valencia comes from holiday – I think too much holiday for him. His condition was not good when he was back, then injury and also go back. Anthony Martial has the baby and after the baby is born – beautiful baby, full of health, thank God – he should be here and he is not here. So we have Alexis (Sanchez) and (Juan) Mata who play every minute of every match and now we have Real Madrid and after that Bayern Munich and that’s our start.”

On the other hand, Liverpool demonstrated their credentials for Gameweek 1 investment with another strong performance. Of particular note was Sadio Mané dispatching his second penalty-kick of pre-season, despite the fact that Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) had won it. Also on the pitch at the time was James Milner (5.5m), long-time taker, and Fabinho (£6.0m) whose history suggested he could be in the conversation. The fact that they did not step up for this one does imply that the Senegalese forward could be set to take spot kicks in the league this season. Salah’s penalty record at Liverpool is scored one, missed one, while Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) has missed two from three he has taken.

Xherdan Shaqiri (£7.5m) put on another good display which could see him force his way into the starting line-up earlier than expected, especially with Firmino still absent. The Swiss international played in an advanced role against Manchester United providing an assist and scoring a spectacular bicycle kick in the second-half. Also pushing for first-team involvement is Daniel Sturridge (£6.0m) whose substitute appearance in this match provided his fourth goal of pre-season – no Liverpool player has more so far.

The battle between Joe Gomez (£5.0m) and Ragnar Klavan (£4.5m) to start at centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) for Gameweek 1 was not furthered by this particular match. Gomez started Liverpool’s previous encounter with Klavan replacing him at half-time, this time around it was the Estonian who got the nod from the beginning. He played 45 minutes before Nathaniel Phillips came on for him while Gomez replaced van Dijk in the 65th minute. We will definitely need to follow this situation more throughout the summer.

MANCHESTER UNITED XI (3-5-1-1): Grant (J Pereira 45’); Fosu-Mensah, Bailly, Tuanzebe (Gomes 81’); Mitchell (Fred 71’), McTominay, A Pereira, Herrera (Bohui 81’), Darmian; Mata (Chong 71’), Sánchez (Williams 81’).

LIVERPOOL XI (4-3-3): Grabara (Kelleher 45’); Moreno (Robertson 65’), Klavan (Phillips 45’), van Dijk (Gomez 65’), Camacho (Chrivella 65’); Lallana (Woodburn 45’), Fabinho (Jones 65’), Milner (Grujic 65’); Mané (Ojo 45’), Solanke (Sturridge 65’), Salah (Shaqiri 45’).

I like Pereira from LEI. Seems to be under the radar around here. They spent £25M to bring him in, so you’d think he’ll start. In preseason friendlies and training, he’s playing out of position. Puel’s style of play is a bit boring which is usually good for defensive assets. They open at MU, which seem to have Stage 3 Mou-itis, and then they have a nice patch of fixtures.

Mendy not a sure starter, you can even downgrade him if you want to, Ederson covers the City def.
I don't buy the Lamela pick (lots of grest picks st 6.5 + he is flagged for injury i think). Imo get a Wolves mid - Jota/Cavaleiro/Costa.
Now you can be more flexible for 343 even 352

I want to play 5-4-1 and spend my money on defenders and midfielders, but theirs no proper bench options among the forwards.

I am that sort of manager who wants to make sure that all my 14 players play at least 60 minute each day. So, I had Austin and Barnes on bench. I looked at it and laughed at myself. Time to take a break. 🙂

No, I am very paranoid about having all those 14 players. 13 may be cool for most people on here. Not for me. And, Sørloth played for the reserve team of Palace against Stevenage (July 14, https://tinyurl.com/yamynaqn)

Agreed that he played with the first team yesterday in that match. But, probably because Benteke is injured.

The matches against Helsingor and Halmstads were not first teams.

I would assume he is the 3rd choice at Palace, behing Zaha and Benteke.

Im also very concerned about having a good bench. But Ive come to the realization that a full bench of playing players is a step too far. 2 good bench options should be enough.

Then you cannot have more than 2 Manchester City players, for example. There are many players who will possibly score many points when they show up, but could be benched randomly, for example Firmino (initially), Pedro, Willian, Mkhitaryan, Martial, etc..

I've gone 5-3-2 primarily, I think there are some good bench options at 5m for midfielders. Much more so then strikers.

      1. banskt
        • 10 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

Yeah, that's the problem. I bet I can get a better 5th starting midfielder with the same money of the 2nd starting striker. And, thats what bothers me.

        1. Man Getting Hit By Football
          • 6 Years

My three bench options are Kenedy, Cairney & Quaner (Kenedy doesn't have great fixtures to start but I plan to wait as long as possible before using my WC).

I could drop both 5m midfielders by .5 to afford a 5.5 striker but I don't see any more value or a nailed striker and it reduces my options, like you I am starting with 14.

It's whatever works best for you, hopefully you find a combination that works for you. Good luck with it!

I always have 3 playing outfielders on the bench, but I think it's particularly vital in our GW1 squads. There is so much uncertainty over late world cup returnees, then you've got the tranny window shutting the day before the season kicks off. We all have a high likelihood of at least one of out Starting XI not featuring.

For me I've currently got Neves, Cairney and Sorloth on my bench and I'm happy with any of them stepping up.

Looks good, you've got options on the bench to rotate with Neves as well.

My team is pretty similar, but I fitted Pedro in midfield with a 4.5 on the bench instead of Neves and Schurrle. I think Pedro could be worth it!

There seems to be so many players and teams that are rotation risks this season. City in general, United defense, Arsenal and Spurs full backs, all the cheaper mids from the top 6 teams like Pedro, Ramsey, Mkhi, Martial, Lingard, Lamela/Son/Moura. Laca, Morata/Giroud. Even to a lesser extent players like Firmino and Mane...

As far as I can see there are 3 approaches.

    1) Try to avoid rotation picks and go for nailed options instead (Eriksen, Salah, Sanchez, KDB, Hazard etc, and cheaper attacking players that are the main men for lower sides, like Sigurdsson/Richarlison, Jota, Gross, Arnie, Zaha etc)
    2) Accept that a lot of players are rotation risks but get them in anyway and try to have solid bench options coming on in case of rotation, sarificing some of your first 11 value.
    3) Accept the rotation risk but still try to maximize first 11 value and just suck up a 4.5 player coming on from the bench in case of rotation.

    What will you do?

3 - because even when players are rotated they often come on at some stage meaning your expensive subs are rendered useless

      I'm going with 1
My concern regarding rotations is players coming off the bench for 20 mins, getting 1 point and ruining my auto-subs.

Richarlison Arnie Zaha Jota all in my team

I’ve got Zaha and Wood. Both definitely their teams best goal scorers. But still worried Zaha might leave. I also think Townsend is a better option than Milli. Surely they won’t get that amount of penalties again this year.

      Cedric -- might not start
Sanchez -- United on the brink of falling apart aka Mourinho's third season syndrome
      Mkhi -- might not start
      Jota -- unknown
Aguero -- Jesus is back in Manchester.

        Cheers mate...! 😆
Got Kabasele first sub if Cedric doesn’t play.
Sanchez is an easy downgrade if said capitulation occurs.
Jota is a gamble. Hoping for the new Michu.
Mkhi is my main concern but may become Ramsey depending on if he stays.
I think to be honest we will all be going into GW1 with a number of risks in our teams.

  20. Rigid Digit

    Is Salah a "must have"?
Doubt he'll be rotated, but can he produce something similar to last season?

    Other options:
Sanchez - likely to play upfront in Lukaku's absence. Capable of goals, assists, set pieces etc. But ManU a bit defensive

Hazard - given the freedom, capable of massive points, but ... Unlikely to play in GW1 and no-one really knows how Sarri will set his team up

De Bruyne - nailed on starter, but playing deeper than hoped for big goal returns.
Sterling / Sane /Mahrez - too much rotation, but expected points when they do get a game

Mane - a sending off and loss of form last season, and was overshadowed by Salah. Probably on pens this year and could benefit if teams decided to double-mark Salah out of the game

Eriksen - slow starter, capable of more but never quite delivers to capability. Could lose out to Alli as Spurs "choice" midfield pick

If you're not going Salah, then go Mane
(but keep an eye on Ozil - it might just happen (and the saving by having a big scoring 8.5m mid could be helpful to the rest of the team)

    1. Teror

That's the nagging doubt I've got - that he will do something similar, and that is why he is in my team.
If he doesn't produce the £13m is useful bunce - if I have to downgrade, I can upgrade elsewhere

    DDG
    Robertson - Mendy - VVD
    Salah (c) - Sane - Pedro - Mkhi - Jota
    Lacazette - Arnie

Bench: Cedric, Wan-Bissaka, AK47 and Steklenberg)

Still TBC - if the Chelsea GK situation changes will make a move on that. Obvious option to downgrade a defender (prob VVD) to a 4.5m and upgrade Laca to Auba/Kun but relatively (only relatively) happy. Will prob still change loads...

I really like the strategy of going with Auba + Aguero and keeping 1.5m in the bank for Kane.

By gwk2 we should have a good idea if Aguero should start vs HUD at home, making the choice of bringing in Kane for FUL home easier.
