Pre-Season

Five things FPL managers should follow in Community Shield final

Chelsea and Manchester City meet in the FA Community Shield today and there is plenty for Fantasy Premier League managers to be keeping their eye on.

In fact, Fantasy enthusiasts couldn’t have hand-picked two better teams to look at in a competitive setting before the Gameweek 1 deadline.

With plenty still up in the air for both clubs, this is a perfect opportunity for some Fantasy research ahead of the 2018/19 season.

WINGING IT

There will be a lot of interest in midfielders Pedro (£6.5m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (£4.5m) today, as managers await a potentially cost-saving route into the Chelsea attack.

The pair have started all of Chelsea’s pre-season matches so far on the flanks of the front three, either side of Alvaro Morata (£9.0m) and, by all accounts, have impressed hugely.

Pedro has two goals to his name in three matches while Hudson-Odoi (one assist) has been deemed the best performer of Chelsea’s pre-season so far.

The absences of Eden Hazard (£10.5m) and Willian (£7.5m), and their potential departures before the transfer window closes, leaves a huge opportunity in this area of the team for Pedro and Hudson-Odoi. If they can take it, then Fantasy managers will be very pleased with the money they could save on these two exciting options.

But there is even more to pay attention to in the wide areas for today’s match. FPL defender Victor Moses (£6.0m) has now been used as a second-half substitute on the right of the forward line twice in pre-season, creating serious potential for him to be a powerful out-of-position option.

The only reason he has not started a match yet is because of his extended World Cup leave, so it is entirely possible that he could feature from the beginning in an attacking position at Wembley today. If that happens, he could quickly become the most popular Chelsea defender in FPL…

GOALONSO?

…But the most fashionable Chelsea stoppers right now are Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.5m). Over 16 percent of managers have backed one of these as they prepare to line-up as the full-backs at Stamford Bridge this season.

The scrapping of the 3-4-3 wing-back system by new manager Maurizio Sarri has the potential to change the output of both of these premium players which is why it will be good to see them in action as more traditional full-backs in a 4-3-3.

Crucially, we need to see whether or not either of them have as much license to get forward, as they have done in previous seasons.

If the pair are afforded that against Man City today then we know that £6.5m is a price worth paying; if not, then it might make sense to look elsewhere.

The cheaper David Luiz (£5.5m) looks like he’ll be a regular at centre-back at the beginning of the season and, as we’ve already alluded to, Moses could even offer more advanced positions than Alonso and Azpilicueta for £0.5m less.

THE MAHREZ SHOW

Pep Guardiola revealed in his pre-match press conference on Friday that Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) would be fit to compete in the Community Shield.

This is a big boost for Fantasy managers who were hoping to tap into his apparent monopoly on a starting place in the early part of the season. As one of a few first-team players at Man City who did not take part in this summer’s World Cup, the Algerian may well get several weeks without rotation from Guardiola, which will be important given the fixtures on offer. The only ones not back in training yet are Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) and Kevin de Bruyne (£10.0m), leaving the door open for Mahrez to play.

We think he’ll probably play in the midfield but it is even a possibility that he could play in a forward’s role within a 3-5-2 system. Either way, we should pay close attention to Mahrez today and see where he might slot into City’s system.

Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is the more likely of City’s natural centre-forwards to start as he played fewer minutes with Argentina than Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) did with Brazil in Russia.

It’s also worth monitoring Leroy Sané’s (£9.5m) involvement today. It was believed he would be an important asset to own for Gameweek 1 having missed out on a place in Germany’s World Cup squad, but he is still yet to make a start for City this summer and Guardiola recently revealed he had a lot of work to do to get fit for the new season.

ON THE MENDY

Right now the defensive picture at Man City looks very unclear, and the Community Shield will be an important indicator of who will line-up at Arsenal in Gameweek 1.

At this current point in time perhaps the only player at this end of the pitch we can be confident will get game-time is goalkeeper Ederson (£5.5m), simply because he did not feature in Brazil’s World Cup campaign.

Outside of that, it becomes pure conjecture to try and piece together a predicted starting line-up, as only Guardiola knows what state his defensive assets are in.

The fact that Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) was in the training squad for the pre-season tour has proved not quite as encouraging as first thought, because the Frenchman was not involved in any matches in the USA. In terms of competition, England man Kyle Walker (£6.5m) left Russia with an injury and Danilo (£5.5m) is still carrying the knock he picked up with Brazil. Fabian Delph (£5.5m) was another training late-comer. Perhaps Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m) could feature on one flank but Mendy may still have to play on the other.

As for centre-backs, Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) picked up an injury on tour, while John Stones (£5.5m), Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m) and Vincent Kompany (£5.5m) have only recently returned to training.

TOO SOON?

Given the special circumstances of this Community Shield match, it is entirely possible that it counts for less than it normally would when predicting Gameweek 1 line-ups.

Ultaimtely, neither one of Guardiola or Sarri wants to be preparing a full first-team for this fixture, with so many important figures affected by the World Cup.

In fact, the City manager said on Friday: “We would prefer to be in another situation but I think Maurizio Sarri is the same. It is what it is, we will adapt and play with guys in better condition. I think we have six substitutes too so everybody will be involved but maybe 90 minutes will not be possible.”

That could indicate that there may well be players who aren’t considered ready for the Community Shield but may become available for the trip to Arsenal in the next week. Accordingly, just because a player is given preference in a position this weekend, does not mean he will hold onto his starting berth the following week.

That’s why Guardiola and Sarri’s press conferences next week could be even more important than this first match of the 2018/19 English season – although it will still be good to witness the return of competitive action for two top-flight teams.

With so many 1st choice players missing this game isn't going to give us much of a clue how both teams will line up during the season albeit it might reflect the GW1 line ups which isn't a good thing

Even then 6 days is a long time for players to get fit, so it might not be a great indication of GW1 either.

Well the breaking news is Chelsea are going to make an offer for Zaha Palace can't refuse, so Pedro would lose his place.

Doubt it but there is a 'vacancy' in that position. Barkley and RLC are currently the front runners.

It's a tough one Syd which is why I'm asking.
Pedro not as nailed but better player in better team.
Richarlison nailed starter with good fixtures.

If you had put these reasons along with your original question people might actually give a you a reasoned answer. There is nothing more that annoys folk on here that people just posting a simple A or B choice.

I would go for Pedro as it would appear from Sarri comments he has a good chance of becoming a regular in the team also Evertons results in pre-season have been a complete car crash.

Haven't had a chance to properly listen to it, but like what I hear so far. I managed to snag a pair of his Jordan 4s that came out earlier this summer, at retail price. They were selling at $1800 at one point, should have cashed in but they're way too nice.

Given that we only have a limited amount of information heading into GW1, during the first few week we will gain the insights into formations, key players, set pieces, OOP players etc. How are you going to set your side up to be flexible enough to react to the incoming information?

Will you leave money in the bank? Try to cover premium players in each position? Early wildcard? Cheers.

        5.5 4.0
        6.5 6.0 4.5 4.5 4.0
        13.0 9.5 6.5 6.5 5.0

Mendy yes, Aguero no. Think Aguero will start 5/6 of the first 7 and should start the home games against New/Hud/Ful which i can see him getting a hat trick in one of. He is my one major risk but think he is worth it.

Has played so little football in the last 9 months and may have picked up a knock during the World Cup. Not playing pre-season hasn't helped. Have gone Ederson until we know more clearly what his fitness is like. He is one I may bring in on a WC around gameweek 5/6 if he has started all the previous games.

So Arnie when moved from a winger to a striker around December started scoring on average 0.5 goals a game. Does that suggest we should expect around 19 goals this season? (0.5×38)

I don't disagree with this, but certainly harder against better teams. Your making assumptions on the service - the 2 players above are unproven in the prem. Could be gold could be flops. Hammers have strengthened well, especially down the flanks, (Fredericks is a great transfer). Despite his pre-season form I think Arnie is a gamble with fixtures and so many new team mates. Its whether you have him surround by more 'nailed on' players in your FPL team.

Marcus Alonso is a terrible defender and if he has to play as a traditional full back he will get found out sooner rather than later

This. He's a product of the modern game where defenders are based on their goals not their tackles.

I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't know here, but just because they might play as a back 4 doesn't necessarily mean he will lose his license to roam.

Plenty of options such as Kante to sit in as they win the ball, moving to a back 3 and allowing full backs to push up etc. I don't know much about Sarri's system personally so not saying this will be the case. I'd be surprised if he persists with Alonso not to play to his strengths at all though.

Agree. Kante + Jorginho should protect the central defence enough. With the less attacking Azpi on one flank, I suspect Alonso will still raid, especially if Zaha's moving inside ahead of him.

      RMT (352 OR 442)

      Patricio | Stekelenburg
      Robbo | Mendy | Luiz | Peltier | WB
      Salah | Mane | Sanchez | Richarlison | Hudson
      Aguero | King | Quaner

-The three way rotation is between Peltier WB and Odoi...
Odoi should be good to start untill Hazard is back.
Peltier and WB rotate well...only need them to be nailed...Even one would do.

      - Sanchez and King are basically placeholders..
      Could easily be
      Mkhi Morata
      Kdb Zaha
      Barkley Auba etc...depending upon performances.

Overall im pretty glad with the squad.

      Thoughts??

Apart from some major weekly concerns over captain decisions, I don't dislike it, but I prefer some more money spend in the midfield. Strikers really need to be on fire to outscore consistent midfielders. Probably have to replace Pedro anyway if Zaha joins Chelsea.

To many hours on this team now, might go for option D:

      A:
      De Gea (Stekelenburg)
Daniels - Luiz - Tomkins (Jagielka - Bednerak)
      Sanchez - Mkhitaryan - Neves - D.Silva - Salah
      Auba - King (Sorloth)

      B:
      Fabianski (Darlow)
Robertsson - Daniels - Alonso (Cedric - Coleman)
      Neves - Mkhitaryan - Sanchez - Sane - Milivojevic
      Auba - Firminho - Sørloth

      C:
      Ederson (Hamer)
PvA - Shaw - TAA (Daniels - Luiz)
Mane - Mahrez - Ozil - Eriksen (Pereira)
      Aguero - Jimenez - Arnoutovic

      - As we move on, what are the players that you want the most that you think you may end up going without?

For me it's Mahrez. I think he could blow up, and he would be my route in to City's attack for their lovely run of fixtures. Leicester fan here who thinks we will get to see just how good he is when surrounded by better players.

      - Why go without him?

Essentially, I'd rather have Salah, Auba and Sanchez. Can't have all 4 without the defence looking awful. Sanchez is clearly the punt of those, but I just can't shake this feeling he might go wild early doors. Full pre-season, playing a depleted Leicester defence, United have been known to start the season strongly...

      What about you all?

Well Kane, obviously. Other 11m+ strikers like - Lukaku, Auba and Aguero - can have one max.

Other prime suspects I can't fit in - prob Hazard, Sanchez and Eriksen.

        And DDG.

Honestly there are loads of them, mostly in midfield. There are so many in the 6 to 7 range that could explode and a good number 9+ too, impossible to have them all.
Rich, Jota, Pedro, Maddison, Gross, Mkhi, Ramsey, Siggi, Schurrle, Yarmalenko. The list just goes on and on.
I'm almost certain Hazard will have a great year, KDB too, Mane and Sanchez and Mahrez and Sterling and Eriksen and Alli... I want them all!

      5. Jealous Viper
        • 5 Years
        5 years, 10 months ago

I think for me it would eventually be Lukaku. Strong chance I may never get him all season but his steady stream of points consistently is lowkey impressive. Sure he lacks the ability to "explode" this not really making him a captaincy option.

Firmino another one at least for the beginning of the season. Was consistently in all my drafts but just got cold feet. Hes a pretty streaky scorer and would rather have Mane+Salah than Firmino+Salah. Mane gets that extra point and another one too for CS and seems to be on pens. Think firm would be the least scoring of the 3 and then throw his doubts about starting gw1 inti the mix.

Honourable mention goes to Arnie. Did so well for me last week but those fixtures are just too bad. Easily could blank for multiple weeks. Will check back around gw 15 and then Sane. Early to say but looks like he may not be as nailed as we thought despite missing WC

      Best 2 to own from:
      A) Zaha
      B) Richarlison
      C) King
      D) Jota

Have C and D myself, but will surely make some transfers on those.
