Scoutcast Episode 263 – squads and strategies for FPL Gameweek 1

The start of the new season is just days away and the Scoutcast crew are still full of doubts about their 15-man Fantasy Premier League squads.

Andy, Az, David and Mark join me to mull over our likely strategies for the start of the 2018/19 campaign as well as reveal our current line-ups.

Across our 82-minute chat, a consensus emerges on backing Manchester City and Liverpool premium assets. But that could all change depending on tomorrow’s transfer deadline day deals and surprise team news.

Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth look set to supply our teams with a supporting cast of bargain enablers due to favourable fixtures. Well, for now at least.

But the groupthink soon breaks down when we discuss forward options, with Mark looking exclusively for value up top, while the rest of us are more keen to splash our cash.

The hive-mind soon returns at the end as we reveal our top choice for the Gameweek 1 armband, so to help those daring to shun a certain Egyptian we also offer up a host of alternative captaincy options.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

Also, this week we are publishing a series of videos looking in detail at each of the Scoutcast regulars’ current Gameweek 1 line-ups.

Are people overlooking Ralls for 5 mil? He's on pens.... good 5th mid if u have the spare 0.5 mil go8ng into the season? Or better to keep that ITB?

Just can't see Cardiff scoring many, think they'll finish up in 20th.

Rather have Hughes, Cairney or Neves at 5.0

Are any of those on pens? Like I say... he's a step up from Stephens who is likely to get u more then 3 or 2 points.... Ralls should match that with the occasional penalty?

For those of you planning an early wildcard: How do you spend you funds in defence? I'm all for having one or two premium defenders this year, but really don't see the big potential in the first couple of GWs.

Right now, I have prioritized having Salah, Sanchez, Auba and Aguero, and went with De Gea and 4 x 4.5 at the back. Too risky, or could it pay off if a GW4 wildcard is the plan anyway?

Gives me a front seven like:

    Salah - Sanchez - Bilva - Fraser - Cairney
    Auba - Aguero

    1. athreya
      • 11 Years

Impressive you found so many 4.5s. Seems to me that the choices below 5 are quite poor.

Well, it's sketchy at best, but think it could pay off:

        A)

        DDG / 4.0
        Cook - Tomkins - Hoedt- Ogbonna - Wan-Bissaka

        B)

        Patricio
        Mendy/Robertson - Shaw - Cook - Wan-Bissaka - Bednarek

It's not gonna give many points at back, but I feel it's quite hard to spot the standouts at this stage, especially given fixtures. It just feels better to spend those money to have Sanchez over Mahrez/Eriksen or Auba over Firmino.

I think its a good idea. Actually good picks below 6 are very few. You know the big teams will get cs. And as long as the 4.5s start they provide more value than 5 and 5.5's currently unless it becomes clear which ones are nailed in the big teams or which of the mid table teams are performing defensively.

I have gone with a front 7 of Salah, Sanchez, Mane, Bilva, Odoi, Aguero and King. Don't have Auba which has allowed me to get two premiu 6.0 defenders. But your plan is also good provided Auba is worth 11 or alteast near.

(And I think your front 7, with 2 x 6.0 at the back, is pretty tempting. I just can't get myself to get rid of Auba)

    3. nisag17

I had De Gea for a long time. But having analysed the 4.5 keepers I think its better to have a 4.5 GK and a 6.0 Attacking defender than the reverse. GK from lower teams get more bonus, save points and typically get more points than the same 4.5 defender from their team. While an attacking defender like Mendy and robertson if they are playing most weeks will get more points than their GK.

I just made that conclusion myself: Rather pair Mendy or Robertson with a 4.5 GK than the other way around.

For sure, if he finds back to the form / role like in his Swansea days he will become a bargain. But a lot of creative power in that Everton midfield now though, don't think he'll get the monopoly he had in Wales.

Proven? Proven to stop playing after half a season!

        Miliv still on pens.
Jota in a highly strengthened squad.

        Jota>Miliv>Richarl for me.

He is sorrounded by much better players, which should improve his tally from last year.

Mili on pens yes, but I wouldn't spend that much on a midfielder just for pens. Rather go for Neves then.

We have not seen Wolverhampton play in the BPL yet. I don't fancy picks from unproven assets. Just look at Knockaert last year.

    Which option do you prefer?

    1. Play Zaha/Tosun, King and Richarlison in a two-out-of-three (occassionally all three of them instead of one of the premium defenders)
    --> Decent/Strong bench
    --> Flexible structure: Can switch between 4-4-2 // 4-3-3 // 3-4-3

    2. Play Morata + Richarlison week in week out (no room for rotation with defenders either)
--> Weak bench (Stephens, WB, 4.5 mid)

I know Morata is not in form. But under the guidance of Sarri, I really do believe he could rediscover himself and outscore the likes of Zaha and King. Only issue with picking him is the super weak bench. I got a 0.5 itb to upgrade him to Lacazette if need be

    1. Deli Alli OxenFree!

Def Option-1 right now(and to start the season)...
*and I personally would prefer [Arnie], King, & Richarlison
...like u say, Morata needs ‘guidance’ to become an FPL asset; so if Sarri can do it for him, you’ll def have time to see the progress/improvement—and bring him in when ready, imo

      1. FC Hakkebøf
        • 7 Years
        5 years, 8 months ago

Arnies fixtures are terrible. Wouldn't even Lacazette at that price with those fixtures (just an example).

Why are everyone going mad about King? Did well in a pre-season game, has done previous hauls, but lacks consistency, and is probably going to play out wide. I believe he is the best option at the pricerange, but banking on him and Arnie to do better than Morata? Seems tough

Because we have a weekly league inside de global league and is important to see who is the first in that week.. the point is.. if in the weekly table the guy that make 70 points but made a lot of transfers appears in first what will happen is that everyone will made a lot of transfers and that will ruin our global league..

Robbo, however if you feel uncertain in Robbo and dont mind the same price just get vvd same price, obviously not as attacking though

TAA if you have a player to cover for him in gw1. The 1.0 extra pricetag on Robbo will be annoying you once TAA is settled in (which might already be in gw1).

Picking Robbo is basically just another step towards an early hit as you will be eager to spend that extra million you save by picking TAA.

Any people going for Arsenal def from gw 3? Top two 5.5 defenders from last season were arsenal

Emery has a history of heavily rotating full backs so perhaps a CB would be a better option

Might play Gw1 but is behind Yoshida... 4th/5th best CB ATM.

It'll be three from Vestergaard, Hoedt, Yoshida and Bednarek. So even with 3-5-2/5-3-2, he's not nailed. Will get game time, just not every week.

Personally I don't think we can play with two immobile CBs, having watched our pre-season games. So doubt Bednarek and Vestergaard will start together.

Chance of Neves being this season's Capoue/Milivojovic/Doucoure?

Not the best Wolves option but could do pretty well for 5.0

I'm kind of agnostic on this one. He plays deep, and of course is with Wolves... so don't know how productive his potential assists ultimately become... he's not afraid to take a long ranger mind you

a bargain list I've drawn up; how likely these lads to feature?

    - Shaw
    - Sturridge
    - Barkley
    - Laporte (or Mendy)

Not bargains if they don't play. I wouldn't consider any of these.

      Odds of stsrting GW1:

      Shaw 95%
      Sturridge 5%
      Barkley 80%
      Laporte 60%
      Mendy 95%

Thing with Sturridge is that he doesn't ever need to start and yet can still smash it on points regularly
