Has premium defender Marcos Alonso outlived his FPL value?

Marcos Alonso (£7.0m) is now without an attacking return in Fantasy Premier League since Gameweek 4.

Despite proving a hugely popular figure, there has been a drop off in his offensive potential in recent weeks.

In this members’ piece, we’ve taken a look at whether or not his owners should be worried about his place in their squads.

With some helpful suggestions from others thoughts on this WC draft:
    Patricio - Hamer
    Alonso - Mendy - TAA - Bennett - AWB
    Hazard - Sterling - Mane - Maddison - Fraser
    Laca - Mitro - Success
    0.5itb
Patricio & Mitro -> Fabianski & Arnie in a few weeks time

Looks great but surely fraser to a 4.5 in 2 GWs and upgrade success is a better move?

Was thinking 3-5-2 and doing Fraser to Knockaert, due to Mitro's fixtures becoming poor but it's certainly an option

Why? Sterling is effectively just Aguero. What would be the dicference between Aguero/Hoijberg and Sterling/Success

But his minutes are limited at the moment and he only has one double digit haul this season, I agree its a consideration but Sterling is also a valid option I think

Also I think there are better forward replacements for Aguero than midfield replacements for Sterling

Lacazette, Auba, even Vardy, whereas midfielders in the 8-11 bracket bar Mane seem poor value.

Prob true. It does mean an injury or loss of form to sterling would make him harder to replace. But either way, kun or sterling, replacing would Prob cost 2 transfers to scale up or redistribute funds, so not a lot to choose between

Sterling has become every bit as much of a key component over 18 months. Pens is not that great an advantage if it's not actually contributing to you outscoring, likewise bonus. Of which he has no more than Sterling. Don't see any obvious advantages there

I agree woth you. I consider important to have attacking City assets however, and it may harm us not owning Kun now. My team has some similairities to yours. I think you have a good WC there

          Mine:
          Patricio
          Alonso, Robertson, Trippier
          Mane, Hazard, Sterling, Maddison, Richarlison

I sold Salah on a WC a few weeks back before their bad fixtures but now the fixtures are turning will get him back albeit £0.2m cheaper. He will come good sooner rather than later.

      I wouldn’t touch Ings though.

That is true, but I think there is more attacking returns to come, he hasn't had any in 4 games but that isn't so bad for a defender. But he has had 2 clean sheets in the mean time. He has been worth the money so far imo.

That’s the difference between having a fodder mid compared to Rich/Mad if you downgrade him to a 4.5.

It might be because a lot of people are playing their WC. Some players % have been down in the low 90's when i have gone to bed and when I check in morning they have gone up in price.

yeah i noticed that, then was back to mid 90's in the morning, he was very up and down those few days. Murray and king never got near the top or above 95% at all and randomly went up. Very hard to predict if you trying to wait as long as possible to make your transfer.

Nice article this, David. Between Alonso and Trippier, I'm leaning towards cashing in on Alonso to get Robertson (in a Liverpool defensive double up) or Mendy.

I've seen people suggesting sell Trippier, but with Eriksen out, he has a lot of chances to return assists.

So depending on how the pressers go, it could be Hamer + Alonso > Ryan + Mendy with 2 FTs.

Prefer Alonso myself. More likely to grab a goal, and has better fixtures, but a big fan of double Liverpool defence.

Is he though? Sarri has repeatedly been saying how Chelsea need to find the right balance between attack and defence, and recently it looks like they've found that balance. That's coincided with Alonso reigning in his attacking threat and the main gist of this article.

I bought at 6.5m and have enjoyed his attacking returns, but I consider them quite fortunate. His stats don't show double figure scores are going to follow at the same rate.

Re Liverpool double up. Bit worried by Robertson playing twice, and hasn't VVD picked up a rib injury? I might wait and see there.

          • 8 Years

yeah, his two returns vs Newcastle were bs/very fortunate, and one of the other assists was a sideways pass to Hazard that AWB could have done. People are going overboard with Alonso imo, and I agree that Trippier is at least as good (especially when factoring in the price difference)

          1. SADIO SANÉ
            • 8 Years
            5 years, 6 months ago

People also creaming over Mendy because of 5 assists, one was a terrible cross that was spilled by the keeper and two were sideways passes to Sterling who uncharacteristically finished from decent range. That being said, City tactics do clearly attempt to take advantage of the width he provides, and I'd be more confident in attacking returns from Mendy over Alonso too.

          2. Twisted Saltergater
            • 14 Years
            5 years, 6 months ago

Yep, pretty much my take on it too.

Sometimes players are fortunate, and they score higher (fantasy wise) than their stats suggests. Remember that Yaya season? 🙂 So, I don't think I go on stats completely, but I'm edging towards Trippier for a greater assist threat, then TAA for value, Pereira for OOP, AWB for benching, and Mendy as another premium. Doesn't leave room of Alonso unless I think he's going to score more than Maddison and Richarlison.

I have TAA,Periera and AWB for those reasons plus Alonso and Doherty.
              Pretty happy with that.

Yep, nice 5 that. I'm a little wary of rotation if I go with TAA, Pereira, Mendy, Trippier and AWB. You could argue that only AWB is 100% sure to play. Keeping Alonso and adding Doherty would remedy that.

Yeh, Alonso and Doherty have been permanent in my line up. Played the fixtures with the other 3 and so far has worked out.
Originally had Robertson and 4.0 but decided to split the cost to two 5.0’s. As you say don’t think I can risk Mendy with this set up unless it’s a TAA or Periera swap.
4 of those 5 you would have are slight rotation risks and AWB belongs on the bench for his upcoming games. I agree.

Yeah, guess he could easily keep getting assists like that if he's passing it to Hazard regularly but I'm not really feeling it at the price - the 9m ish mids aren't performing atm so Alonso owners aren't missing out on much right now anyway tbh.

Yeah, nice defence. I've currently got TAA (value/set-pieces), Pereira (fixtures/oop continues hopefully), Doherty+Jonny (solid defence/slightly oop), AWB (value/fodder).

I'm tempted to upgrade AWB to one of the above for the tough Wolves fixtures, and I'm eyeing up Trippier, Robbo & Mendy over Alonso - even Holebas could still be a decent shout with better fixtures and set-pieces.

I honestly think premium defenders will still be a good option. I started the season with Alonso, Robertson and Mendy. Now I have Alonso Robertson and Trippier (plan to do Trippier out Mendy in soon).

They all have great chances to provide attacking returns

If he is fit I think he is a good option for next 3-5 as you would captain him in most of them I would guess. But not essential and indeed very pricey, there is other good options such as mane and Sterling. Salah only 33% owned now but I would not make decisions based stuff like that. If you think your team is better without him then go with that, don't worry what others are doing.

I think you'd be mad to captain Salah at the moment. It's at the point where we need form as well as fixtures.

Why not captain Hazard for the foreseeable?

I think Aguero is the best choice for captain for home games against Burnley and Southampton personally but yeah Hazard seems to best captain pick for the majority of games in the foreseeable future. Just pointing out he has good fixtures to make him captain. I had been planning to get Salah in for gw9 but this last week have been leaning to not bother with him and get Sterling instead.

Looking at Sterling on WC - his last four hauls have been against Newcastle, Fulham, Cardiff and Brighton. Surely returns may drop off with tougher opposition ahead (except So'ton and Burnley). At least considering price. Ofc same could be said of Agüero also

Someone close to me has been given the all clear this year after being given a few months to live suffering from an aggressive liver cancer. He pursued every alternative therapy out there after the doctors had given up. His physician calls him a walking miracle after his last scan and tests came back all clear.

He was told it was down to his lifestyle choices especially regarding alcohol that had caused the cancer. (He knows this).
The liver is an amazing organ if you research it, but even that won't save you if you are determined to slowly poison yourself.

As men, we are our own worst enemies when it comes to physical and mental well being. ( I probably need to cut down too tbh).

                    Take Care Sir.

Alcohol can affect the body so much, my sister is a psychiatric nurse and I have heard about the horrible things it can do to people. It's one of the only drugs that if you are heavily dependant on for so long and were to go cold turkey you die as your body shuts down.

I spent abut a decade drinking that quantity of alcohol a day. But in a much more accessible way, ie a bottle of scotch a day.

If your question is a serious one. You have already made the first step by realising you have a problem, and asking for help.

There are far better places for drink related problems than a FF site. But a long journey begins by taking the first step.

                Best of luck.

Hopefully Anfield Express makes a miraculous comeback this week.

Keep Aguero on WC? Captaincy this week may be a factor if Salah is a doubt. Considering Vardy or Laca instead of Aguero

I would. Also still prefer him over Sterling esp until the can-Mendy-and-Sane-play-together thing is properly settled - i.e. does Sterling have a greater/lesser guarantee of minutes on LW (+ RW).
