Giroud injury increases likelihood of further Hazard starts up front

We’ve got the Fantasy talking points, salient manager quotes and headline injury news from two more Gameweek 20 matches, both of which were contested on Sunday.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Chelsea

  • Goal: N’Golo Kante (£4.9m)
  • Assist: David Luiz (£5.8m)

Chelsea’s injury problems continue to mount, with Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) the latest casualty of the festive fixture programme.

Already without the sidelined Pedro (£6.3m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (£4.2m), Maurizio Sarri revealed that the Blues also lost three players to injury ahead of the trip to Selhurst Park and then watched on as Giroud succumbed to an ankle problem in the second half of Sunday’s victory.

The French forward was seen leaving south London on crutches and looks to be a serious doubt for the visit of Southampton in Gameweek 21 and beyond, though no official prognosis has been given yet.

After full-time, the Chelsea boss said of Giroud:

The problem is his ankle. I don’t know the extent at the moment. We have to wait until tomorrow. Later this evening I will see the doctor for the first result.

In the last two days we were a bit unlucky. Yesterday in 10 minutes we had three injuries: Fabregas, Loftus-Cheek and Drinkwater. Now today Giroud, and we were already without Pedro and Hudson-Odoi, so now we are in trouble because in January we have to play every three days.

Fabregas has a neck injury. I don’t know how long he will be out for. I don’t know if he has to rest for two days or for ten days.

Giroud’s injury could have ramifications for Eden Hazard (£11.1m), who was back on the left wing for this match but who had started the previous four Premier League games as a “false nine”.

The unavailability of Pedro, Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus Cheek (£5.2m), all of whom have played on the right flank this season, essentially forced Sarri into switching Hazard back out wide, with Giroud starting up top for the first time since Gameweek 14.

Sarri is a fan of Hazard in a central role, though, and a medium-term injury to Giroud would surely only reinforce the Italian manager’s position.

Alvaro Morata (£8.4m) returned from his own layoff in this fixture as Giroud’s 76th-minute replacement and is another option in attack, though the Spaniard was declared fit for the Boxing Day win over Watford and wasn’t considered by Sarri for that 18-man squad so would appear to have fallen from favour somewhat.

At this point, it seems likely that as soon as Pedro recovers from a hamstring problem in early January we will see more of Hazard in a central role.

The Belgian, as feared would happen if moved back over to the left flank for this encounter, didn’t enjoy the best of afternoons in south London.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.4m) has made a habit out of taming in-form wingers this season and Hazard was his latest conquest, with the talismanic Belgian’s goal threat restricted to one blocked shot from distance in the first half.

Hazard buzzed around across the final third as he attempted to inject some urgency into proceedings and though he registered more key passes than anyone on show, this was as quiet a performance as he has delivered in some time. Easier tests likely await in the forthcoming double-header at Stamford Bridge, however.

Wan-Bissaka and the Crystal Palace defence produced an admirable rearguard effort for much of this encounter, with the Eagles showing precious little ambition in attack and content to soak up a lot of Chelsea possession.

Palace, indeed, didn’t register a single effort on target all game and their first real attempt of note came in the final ten minutes when they belatedly exerted some pressure on a hitherto untroubled Chelsea defence.

This was the Blues’ ninth clean sheet of the season (only Liverpool have more), but there will seldom be easier afternoons for their back four.

Asked if his side could have shown more ambition, Roy Hodgson said:

If we’d have wanted to be beaten 4-0 or 5-0, possibly, yes.

They were very, very good. Our first half was disciplined and focused, and we limited their goalscoring chances. They had that offside goal, but apart from that, I thought we did quite well.

When they score the goal there are two possibilities, either you are not getting the ball well enough or they are keeping it from you. We were not able to get the ball from them. But if you open yourselves up, you can see them exploit the spaces. Or you can try and keep the game tight and under some sort of control, until maybe 20 minutes from then, and then hope to take your chances.

It didn’t work, because we didn’t score. We weren’t at our best by any stretch of the imagination, technically. They were very, very good on the ball, and in terms of their organisational structure. It was going to be a tight game if we could keep it tight. That’s why we lost the game 1-0 and not by more.

Willian (£7.2m) and Ross Barkley (£5.3m) both struck the woodwork but Vicente Guaita (£4.2m) – still preferred over the fit-again Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) – wasn’t really extended too much before N’Golo Kante (£4.9m) burst forward to latch onto a David Luiz (£5.8m) through ball to put Chelsea in front.

Kante is now the highest-scoring FPL midfielder available for under £5.0m, after scoring his third league goal of the campaign – as many as he had managed in the previous three seasons combined.

Sarri still, however, seems less than 100% convinced by Kante in his role on the outside of Jorginho (£4.8m) and equally dubious about the other midfield options available.

Sarri said of Kante:

He has to think about the defence first of all. Then he is improving, especially in movements without the ball. His movement today was really very good and was done with the right timing.

When we have to play against opponents who are very low, it’s difficult for the striker and wingers to find space. So for us the midfielders’ movement without the ball is very important.

Now we have to work on Loftus-Cheek and on Barkley. Loftus-Cheek especially is a great player with the ball, but he can improve a lot in his movement without the ball.

Marcos Alonso (£6.8m), who was booked for a petulant punch of the ball early on, got forward a lot to support his colleagues in attack but like many of his team-mates found a dogged Palace defence difficult to penetrate.

A lack of goals is something Palace have struggled with all season but Hodgson confirmed after the match that the club were interested in Dominic Solanke (£4.7m), who would be an intriguing addition to the budget striker debate if afforded a run in the team.

Hodgson said:

He would provide the attacking threat that a good centre-forward should provide. He’s very much a proven goalscorer through all the age groups with Chelsea and with England.

If he comes here, it’ll be up to him to show he can do that and transfer that into Premier League football. He’s someone with the profile we’re looking for, and the ability we are looking for, which once again today I thought we were sadly lacking.

Crystal Palace XI (4-5-1): Guaita; Wan-Bissaka, Tomkins, Sakho, Van Aanholt; Milivojevic, McArthur, Kouyate (Meyer 78′); Townsend, Schlupp (Wickham 69′); Zaha.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Kepa; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso; Kante, Jorginho, Barkley (Kovacic 88′); Willian (Emerson 82′), Giroud (Morata 76′), Hazard.

Burnley 2-0 West Ham United

  • Goals: Chris Wood (£6.2m), Dwight McNeil (£4.4m)
  • Assists: Ashley Barnes (£5.6m), Ashley Westwood (£4.5m)

West Ham United trod in the footsteps of Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City and Everton in following up a fine Gameweek 19 performance with a limp showing this weekend.

It was a thoroughly deserved victory for Sean Dyche’s side, which came four days after their 5-1 pasting at the hands of the Toffees on the same ground.

The Hammers deserve to be cut some slack after five victories in their previous six Premier League outings but they were abject on Sunday, with only some profligate finishing from Chris Wood (£6.2m) and Ashley Barnes (£5.6m) keeping the scoreline respectable.

The Burnley strike pair had combined early on to give the Clarets the lead but were guilty of squandering several glaring opportunities, with Barnes denied by Lukasz Fabianski (£4.8m) from point-blank range and firing wide in the first minute when unmarked eight yards out. Wood meanwhile produced an air-kick when the ball was squared to him by Barnes and later screwed a shot past the post when one on one with the Polish shot-stopper.

While Fabianski is a popular set-and-forget option in goal for many FPL managers, it’s his save points that keeps him competitive in the goalkeeper’s market: only Fulham and Manchester United have registered fewer clean sheets than the Hammers (three) this season.

West Ham look particularly susceptible on the flanks, ranking 17th for chances conceded from the wide areas and joint-16th for headed opportunities allowed in 2018/19. Only Burnley themselves have conceded more big chances.

That, of course, played right into the hands of Dyche, who deployed Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.6m) and Dwight McNeil (£4.4m) as orthodox wingers in this contest and reverted to a 4-4-2.

McNeil was excellent on the left flank and scored his first Burnley goal when sliding to meet an Ashley Westwood (£4.5m) cross on 33 minutes.

Dyche said of the teenager:

We were debating it [playing McNeil] because we know he can offer us something, but we weren’t sure when.

We’ve been waiting to get out of this position and get a few wins to give him a bit of a chance because we think he’s a real player, but in the end I thought ‘no, I’m going to play him’.

He delivered and he and his family can be very proud tonight.

The Burnley boss made a big call in goal in recalling Tom Heaton (£4.8m) for his first start since September 2017 and seemed to suggest the goalkeeper’s jersey was his to lose now:

I had to make a tough decision today because Joe (Hart) has been very good for us on numerous occasions this season, but the facts are the facts.

We’ve conceded a lot of goals and I’ve looked at changing shape and personnel and eventually, unfortunately, you have to look at the keeper too.

I must say, great credit to Joe because he was the first one to jump off the bench when Tom made an important save at the end, so there is a great respect and a great professionalism there.

Equally, Tom’s professionalism because he hasn’t played for a while, but he keeps himself sharp and he got his payback today.

I’ve got three England goalkeepers to choose from because Nick Pope isn’t far away, and I knew this moment would come.

Manuel Pellegrini blamed the festive fixture schedule for his side’s showing and may have had a valid point, particularly with his squad stretched through injury:

Well normally I don’t like to give excuses for when you lose a game but I think that today it was very clear, from the first minute of the game that the physical was so different between one team and the other.

We arrived in London at 2am in the morning on Friday and we are playing at 2.15pm on a Sunday, 48 hours, against a team that are physical and recovered better than our team, without any doubt. They had 35 hours more to recover than we did.

Felipe Anderson (£7.4m) produced a surly display as he was bullied out of the game by Phil Bardsley (£4.2m), Robert Snodgrass (£5.4m) was hooked at half-time after being booked, and Lucas Perez (£6.2m) turned in another poor performance up front before also being withdrawn at the interval.

Substitute Andy Carroll (£5.4m) was West Ham’s only real threat and he forced a stupendous save from Heaton in the Burnley goal with a second-half header.

Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) also made his first start since early December after returning from a hamstring injury, with Pellegrini saying there was no risk attached to his quicker-than-anticipated comeback:

Marko worked for the whole week with us and I think that more than just Marko, we had ten other players who were out injured. The same players have played seven games in December.

Days like today they can happen, but we need to bounce back, recover well and go again on Wednesday and use the players who are in the best moment.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Heaton; Bardsley, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Gudmundsson, Westwood, Cork, McNeil; Wood (Vokes 90′), Barnes.

West Ham United XI (4-4-2): Fabianski; Antonio, Diop, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Rice, Noble, Snodgrass (Diangana 46′), Anderson; Perez (Carroll 46′), Arnautovic (Silva 73′).

Probably right. Any huge build up game with multiple popular FPL assets usually disappoints.

Personally I need a complete City fail with a Salah monster haul and VVD assists 😉

So is Pogba a must have now ?
I dont own him, could get him in one move but it would mean getting rid of Martial which I dont want to do. Really want to give Tony a good run hoping that is his turn to expload & that Pogba's numbers are simply not sustainable.

Bottomed last page ... My advice for the new year is to pay less attention to previous gameweeks and more attention to your well reasoned future predictions. It sounds obvious, but working out where the next hauls are coming from and having the courage to back your analysis is how you shoot up the rankings.

Most recent trends could potentially have been predicted or at least considered if you were thinking big picture and keeping an open mind e.g. Pogba with a new lease of life post Mo - makes sense, but maybe you were thinking “I still don’t trust United”. Son was clearly entering a purple patch weeks ago, but maybe you were thinking “Asia Cup soon and rotation risk, not worth it”. Digne had the underlying stats, we all knew it, but maybe you were put off by the lack of actual fpl points - until they started flying in.

These are just some examples. The signs are usually there, but we often take a few too many GWs to catch on. Narrowing that gap is crucial. Look forwards, not backwards! Challenge yourself to ignore the recent past. Good luck!

This completely this. Read your post in the earlier thread about how you operate and it’s simple but makes complete sense. I’m following your strategy to try to get back up there. Slipped from 631 to 194k in 13 GWs. I’m targeting a huge shift upwards from now on.

Thanks mate. I’m really interested in trying to shift the way some people look at the game. I’m a pro writer and editor, and I’ve just started drafting some ideas for a longer article that delves into some of these game threories and encourages calculated aggression. Hopefully there is an audience for that type of content, just testing the waters.

Thinking in terms of transfers being used as strategic weapons rather than tools for damage limitation is a big one. “Be patient” is lazy fpl advice. I say push the boundaries and see where it takes you!

Hope the second half of your season goes well. Interested to follow your progress.

I don’t think the essence of what I’m getting at comes down to me picking the next haul. Anyone who could do that every time would win fpl. But you can definitely give yourself the best shot at success by thinking carefully about who is most likely to score points soon, and having reasons why you believe that. Then not waiting a few weeks to find out if you were right or not.

Are there folks who don’t think carefully about their transfers?

If so I’d imagine they’re very inexperienced, so this is certainly good advice for those in their first season or two, anyone with more than that will have learned the hard way 🙂

I think even experienced players worry too much about whether a player is in “fpl form” with recent points. And worry about protecting value. And worry about a new transfer in having good fixtures for 6 weeks. A lot of points can be gained from a short term approach and extremely decisive action - not waiting to see if Player X starts performing the way you think they probably will.

Yeah, there is a certain romance about short term decisions when they go right, but as I said below it’s thin ice I think - the more short term you make your decisions, the more you’re exposed to variance - both positive & negative, which is much more akin to gambling rather than a risk management strategy.

Lol you’re missed the point guys by a fair old margin. And Son was not a short term pick in GW14 when his scoring run was getting underway.

What do you define as short term? You mention that you’re not interested in 4-6 weeks out, so presumably 1-3 weeks?

No, Son was not short term. Yet that is exactly what a lot of people were saying (they've even admitted so in this thread). For many, Son was too short term and punty because he wasn't nailed enough and would be going to Asia Cup. I'm not saying that makes any sense, but it is what some saying as the reason they weren't going for him.

Yeah 1-3 weeks, and good fixtures that keep extending beyond that is just a bonus. Obviously you can't do this with every player in your squad, but you can definitely do it with your more expensive assets while leaving some parts of your team untouched. A big part of this strategy is to always have the best captaincy options each GW - always!

Here’s an obvious one. If you have Salah but not Hazard, why not make the switch this GW and give Haz the armband? Sure, Haz is not punt or maverick pick, but most Salah owners will be reluctant to ditch him now. But if you think Haz scores more points this GW, I say go for it. Long term future planning is overrated.

Have to agree to disagree mate. Personally I think this is what separates a good manager from a great manager. Short term transfers ensure you know what you're buying (mostly) as it's all about the next few GW where you have as much info as you're going to get. Making transfers for the long term - how often does that ever really work in the long term?

Again, it will depend on definitions - what do you define as short term? You mention that you’re not interested in 4-6 weeks out, so presumably 1-3 weeks?

If you base your transfer decisions exclusively on a one to two week window you will pretty much exclude yourself from a good GW38 OR (What is a decent OR? I’d say top 10-15k) unless you are extremely good at predicting short term results. (If you were extremely good at predicting short term results you could literally make millions from gambling)

It’s a concept that often rears its head over the years though and always interesting to test thought processes

I mean clearly I have to disagree with your assertion that a manager playing short term is excluding themselves from a good GW38 OR. Unless I'm about to collapse from 30 OR into oblivion over 18 weeks.

To clarify though, I'm not saying one should make constant transfers and take hits galore to change their team every single week, but I am saying it's worth being open minded to rapid change. Premium assets in for a few plum fixtures, then swap again, etc.

It’s not that a manager who bases their transfer decisions exclusively on the short term will exclude themselves from a good GW38 OR...

It’s that a manager who bases their transfer decisions exclusively on the short term will exclude themselves from a good GW38 OR... UNLESS they are very good at predicting short term results.

And short term results are extremely unpredictable - hence why gambling is so profitable for bookies & casinos.

        1. Holmes

obviously I would try to have a sound logic behind a decision (by my standard)

recently I did Hazard to Sane around 4 weeks back, Hazard's stats were not looking much better, historically he didnt do well as false 9, there was also evidence that with Morata he gets comparatively less returns. Sane was looking good and with Mendy out, gametime wasnt an issue but in the end that was probably one of the worst move of the season...

and when things like this happens where you take a risk of dropping a quality player for another and it backfires, it gets much easier to show patience and sit back, save FT, take no hits. If its working, as in your case, the flow of hits/transfers increases.

I tend to lean towards this - Alonso was as good a pick as Digne from a reasoning perspective, Kane was as good a pick as Salah, Eriksen was good as Son, Martial as good as Pogba - it’s generally random as you say.

You win some you lose some - GW38 OR doesn’t lie in the end

Agree with your last sentence. Not so much the rest. Son is a better fpl asset than Eriksen. Pogba was the most likely to completely come to life in an instant and start attacking for fun. Kane at the right time, Salah at the right time. In GW22 I will be buying Salah back for the 4th time this season! Had virtually every good score, but let him go easily at times too.

Son/Eriksen is just an illustration rather than being taken literally - I just think encouraging folks to “think short term” and backing it up with three of the highest points scorers from the last few weeks is dodgy territory...

With hindsight you can always go back & pick the factors that players had in/against their favour AFTER the fact.

Similarly I wouldn’t at all agree that “being patient” is lazy advice - surely you can think of a few examples where not being patient has wrecked seasons?

Holding Sane and Sterling hasn’t been good for those who has been ‘patient’

This season is one where hauls can come from any one players in any teams. But looking ahead at fixtures, even short term, means that you should be able to jump on the next bandwagon.
Rashford was always short term, but looking at fixtures, he was likely to get points - it paid off. Aggressive method can and do work. It has for me these past couple weeks anyways

Again, you’re missing the point - What about those who weren’t patient with Salah & sold before or after the Burnley match

Using hindsight does not invalidate patience as an FPL strategy.

Fair points. What I meant is that simply "being patient" is not an overall strategy. It's probably a good way to finish top 100k, but surely it's worth our time to aim high. If you're always patient you don't open up your mind to alternative moves, multiple transfer permutations etc that could be gold. Of course it's a fine line - if you constantly take hits on random punts, it's probably not going to work out consistently. But shuffling assets around with less patience can be extremely fruitful.

Haha, I like your approach. A couple a seasons ago I finished in the top 5k where I took loads of hits (and I mean loads) trying to get on the right players before the masses. Some seasons it works, others not so much.
Last season was a disaster and I was 1.7m this time last year. The main reason was that I was playing too patiently keeping assets such as Ali & Sane through their runs of blanks!

Nice one. That's the thing right, patience can go as horribly wrong as a lack of patience. The one big advantage of making more transfers with a short term view is that you're only trying to predict the immediate future - 3 great fixtures, player nailed on in a team playing well, defensive injury crisis in the opponent, etc - act now! Who cares if you're not sure about that player in 4-8 gameweeks' time.

It's what made Salah (C) vs Arsenal this week make so much sense. 4 weeks ago we never would have considered it, yet it became obvious. So obvious that I brought him back in GW19, a week after selling him. Not being worried about the long term implications allowed me to not miss back to back Salah (C) hauls.

      I completely agree mate.
I made a mistake jumping from Hazard to Sterling when I should have held, I knew Hazard’s underlying numbers was good and great fixtures coming up.
And I’m very disappointed to have missed on Son’s points - like you say, the Asian cup had a huge bearing on my decision to not bring him in.

Since then though, I basically followed the advice you’ve just set out above and looked ahead. I jumped early on Anderson, Rashford, Pogba. And them three have sent me zooming up the league.
I am currently looking ahead again and trying to work out who the next bandwagon will be, Richarlison/Aguero are the ones I feel will be the next players to own.
Because I jumped on the aforementioned players so early, I am able to save FT this week.

Some really good points there. As you've said, you possibly could have made better decisions in each of those scenarios. Of course there is hindsight involved, but there was also sound reasoning that you ignored and then regretted. It's great that you recognised it then made a positive change - awesome work.

Digne is a perfect example. All the stats and eye test told the story, but some managers were still reluctant to believe the hype, which existed for a reason. I also brought him in before he had done anything meaningful fpl wise. Surely these are the transfers that really count.

What to do with my team please?

    Alisson / Fabianski
    Alonso / Laporte / Robertson / Trippier / Doherty
Salah / Felipe Anderson / Richarlison / Fraser / Hojbjerg
    Wilson / Aubameyang / Jimenez

    * Not really interested in Sterling or Sane as they're likely to miss the odd game (rested)
    * Thinking of Aubameyang > Aguero in a few GW's (if Aguero plays regularly)
    * Laporte has been rubbish last 7GW's but no other Man City in my team.
    * Would like Pogba but that would mean losing 1 of Felipe Anderson or Richarlison + Man Utd only played Cardiff, Huddersfield & Bournemouth

Any help is appreciated. Thank you & HAPPY NEW YEAR to all

        How about:

        Fraser > Pogba
        Laporte > Wan-Bissaka
        Trippier > Digne

I can downgrade Laporte & upgrade Fraser as still won't have enough for Pogba.

We're now past the halfway point of the season and can look forward to a tight race for the golden boot, many of our mini-leagues, and possibly the Premier League title.

While there are debates about the best FPL formation, the best heavy hitters, and the best ways to spread team value this HT asks more straight-forward questions:

    1. Which player do you predict will have a big second half in FPL, bigger than their first half?
    2. Why?

    3. Who do you think will win the golden boot?
    4. What factors make you think they'll win and what could stand in their way?

Sorry but what kinda ridiculous hot topic is this?

Crystal ball much, and for what? Things change each week and you should have learnt it by now.. auba at the start was useless.. then started banging them in and went on the leader board... Now back to a drought.. twists and turns. All have quality.. but to predict is to bang your head against a wall and hope the wall breaks.

Some people find it interesting to talk about what might happen in future games!

The first question in my mind is totally valid, and it also helps people populate their watchlist and think about who to look out for. The second is qualifying those answers.

Fair, the 3rd isn't science but a bit of fun. Don't see anything wrong with that 😀

It's really just a prediction which essentially is what fantasy is. Nothing much different from predicting who will score the most points next week and making them your captain if you have them. Would that also be a ridiculous hot topic?

      1. Many options but Firmino usually do much better second half than before christmas.
      2. Liverpools attack clicking and goals will be shared
3.Salah is perhaps the most likely but Hazard if he keeps injury free could be in the golden boot discussion, 3 goals behind but 200mins less played.
      4. Main goal scorer in the team, plays as striker, Chelsea is in for approx 75 goals this season, and i think he will be close to half of them, at least 40% which means somewhere between 28-35. Arsenal will regress, Liverpools shares goals, Kun will be injured at some time, Kane is not the same goalscorer that he was, goals are shared in that team too.

Possibly but folks have been saying this for weeks.

“He’s been rested, he’ll surely do well if he starts vs Huddersfield!” (1pt)

“He’s angry after being subbed vs Burnley, haul incoming vs Brighton!” (5pts - lucky assist).

He never passes the eye test either. (Although I’m biased as a bitter former owner who expected more!!)

I'd hold Mitro at least for another week due to Arsenal defence and see whether he manages to convert his personal good form to more goals. I don't think his fixtures are too bad either apart from the Spurs game, but Jimenez will probably outscore for less over the same period and Rashford (for a little more) injury permitting.

Ings has good fixtures but I wouldn't be overly enamoured having him, scored 3 goals from 4 shots in new manager's first two games....unsustainable output. Since then he's played about 60 mins, had 1 shot and then didn't start v City. Averages about 65 mins a game when he does start. Still a good bench option but I wouldn't want to be relying on him in my first 11 every week

Option B: Mitro and Alonso out, Auba and Lovren in

    Option C: Do nothing.

1FT, more then 3 million in the bank and want to use them since i don't have Salah and see opportunity in Auba explosion.

    The team as bellow:
    Fabianski
    Alonso Doherty Digne
    Richarlison Hazard Son Pogba
    Kane Mitro Jimmy

    Bench: AWB, Robbo, Odoi
