Pereira the rare FPL gem in dull 2019 opener

Everton and Leicester treated Fantasy Premier League managers to a rather dreary opening match of 2019.

The two sides were separated by just one goal in a game that was largely characterised by individual errors and sloppy play.

Perhaps the biggest indicator of how much attacking play took place is the fact that just two offside flags were raised in the entire 90 minutes, the first one not coming until just before the 80th minute.

Nevertheless, there were still a few Fantasy talking points for us to discuss in this Scout Notes article.

Everton 0-1 Leicester City

Goals: Jamie Vardy (£8.9m)

Assists: Ricardo Pereira (£5.2m)

Ricardo Pereira (£5.2m) reminded Fantasy managers the part he can play in our squads this season as he came out of Leicester’s win at Everton with a double-figure haul. The FPL defender provided the assist for Jamie Vardy‘s (£8.9m) second-half strike, taking his count to four for the season. Over his last four fixtures, Pereira has averaged 6.75 points per game.

It was another match in which the Portuguese international was deployed on the flanks of an attacking trio as Claude Puel went with a 4-3-3 formation. Typically a right-sided player, this time around Pereira was stationed on the left of Vardy, with Rachid Ghezzal (£5.1m) on the other flank. The fact that Danny Simpson (£4.2m) was trusted with his first start since Gameweek 15 shows that Puel believes he has options at right-back to free Pereira up further up the pitch, even with Daniel Amartey‘s (£4.3m) long-term injury.

Crucially, the trip to Goodison Park saw Leicester record their seventh clean sheet of the season. Only Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Spurs have more than that in 2018/19. The Foxes’ have actually been offering the potential for shutouts for some time now. They came into Gameweek 21 joint-fourth for big chances allowed in the four previous matches. At Goodison, they conceded just four shots in their penalty box all afternoon.

Southampton (home) and Wolves (away) are the next two matches for Leicester, which could provide more returns at both ends of the pitch for Pereira. However, it is Liverpool (away), Manchester United (home) and Tottenham (away) between Gameweeks 24 and 26, which may put off potential punters before their kinder stretch from Gameweek 27 onwards.

It is still worth noting that Pereira looks to be the only one to be providing any consistency in support of Vardy in attack. James Maddison (£6.8m) remained an unused substitute at Goodison Park having recorded just one offensive return since Gameweek 16. Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) featured only as a second-half replacement for Ghezzal, who had been comfortably one of the worst players in the opening 45 minutes. It was a shame for Algerian, who was making his first start since Gameweek 12 but based on his performance at Everton, he may find it hard to get back in again.

Meanwhile, Hamza Choudhury (£4.3m) made his third start in four matches. The 21-year-old did well in recent wins over Chelsea and Manchester City but was rested for the Gameweek 20 defeat to Cardiff. In defence, Wes Morgan (£4.5m) failed to recover from an illness which saw Jonny Evans (£4.8m) come back in alongside Harry Maguire (£5.4m).

In truth, Leicester’s back-line did not have a lot to deal with from an Everton side that struggled to find any rhythm in the lunch-time kick-off. Richarlison (£7.0m) was deployed on the left-wing, allowing Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.3m) to come back in and operate as the centre-forward. Unfortunately for the Toffees, Richarlison did not have his shooting boots on, in a performance reminiscent of his Watford days. Nobody had more shots in the penalty box than him at Goodison Park, but not a single one was on target.

“I felt our team were too nervous and anxious without reason. We are playing a lot of games in a row with no times to rest but that is not an excuse when you miss some simple things. When you play in this way with easy mistakes, the bad things come to you and that is what happened with the goal we conceded. We gave them the chance to do what they came to do.” – Marco Silva

As expected, the rusty Simpson did initially struggle with having to deal with Richarlison and Lucas Digne (£5.2m) on Everton’s left but neither one could record any attacking returns. The Frenchman continues to show amazing creative potential having launched 12 crosses into Leicester’s box, but without Cenk Tosun (£6.5m) or Richarlison at centre-forward, very few of them came to fruition on this occasion. One would expect more presence in the 18-yard-box the next time Everton take to the field, so now does not feel like the time to move away from Digne.

However, it must be noted that expecting clean sheets out of the diminutive left-back is increasingly becoming a tall order. Everton are now without one for eight consecutive Gameweeks. They were hardly attacked from angles by Leicester but were undone by a moment of weakness at the back. As previously mentioned, the game was characterised by sloppy play all over the pitch, and that continued well into the second half, Michael Keane (£5.0m) being punished for his poor control. He stepped out of the defence to gather a loose ball, his first touch letting him down and allowing Pereira able to feed the ball into the space behind the centre-back. That was all Vardy needed to chase it down and net a textbook strike.

“They came to play here with their midfielder line of five players and waiting for one mistake and one transition with Ricardo and Vardy. After that, if you were anxious or nervous, you will be more.” – Marco Silva

Named among the substitutes for Everton was the experienced Seamus Coleman (£5.2m), as Jonjoe Kenny (£4.2m) returned for his first start since Everton’s last meeting with Leicester in Gameweek 8. The right-back had the Toffees’ best chance of the game, hitting the cross-bar in the first half.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) returned to the side, with Bernard (£5.9m) dropping to the bench, and created more chances than any other player at Goodison Park.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Digne, Zouma, Keane, Kenny; Gomes (Bernard 62′), Gueye; Richarlison, Sigurdsson, Walcott (Tosun 69′); Calvert-Lewin.

Leicester XI (4-3-3): Schmeichel; Chilwell, Maguire, Evans, Simpson; Ndidi, Mendy, Choudhury; Ghezzal (Albrighton 45′), Vardy (D Gray 90+2′), R Pereira.

    Kola needs some appreciation.

With 3 cleans in 20 gwks Emery needs his team to work a lot on the defensive aspects of the game. Their defence is not elite (xgoal against is twice that of city and pool), and their prices are awkward, as they are priced higher than assets from other scrappy defences.

What they do have, is fullbacks/wingbacks bombing forward, and amongst those, Kola is the real gem. His price is shambolic when you look at his attacking stats. Arsenal would only need to become a mediocre defence for Kola to become the 12point merchant he shows promise of being.

Having only played 10 gwks, only half of most defenders, hes stil top of the xA. His attacking abilities actually sees his Mins/xA-numbers "twice as good" as second on the table.

My opinion is that people are'nt really paying attention with regards to Kola, but loads prob would if arsenalstrikers had been converting like they normally do, or if their defence had kept a clean or two over the christmasperiod.

I would rather have Maitland Niles at 4.4 and not worry at all about defensive returns.
Yes, Kola can get returns, but he must be one of the worst defenders in the league.

      1. WesMantooth
        • 13 Years

I wouldnt go anywhere near Maitland Niles, as I suspect he'll see very few minutes once Bellend is back.

I dont think Kola is any worse at defending then his other team mates in defence.

Thing is, he's producing good numbers (for his price), and it seems like circumstances can only get better (better defending, team mates converting the chances he creates).

For me a defender needs to have a decent chance of a clean sheet first and foremost because attacking returns on their own tend not to come often enough to make them a viable option to play every week. Unfortunately this season only Liverpool have shown consistency in that department, so with that in mind, I’d say the best defence is 2 Liverpool players and one player who has a realistic chance of both cs and attacking returns. The stand out player there is Doherty and that is why, for me, Kola is not an option.

If you're only ever going to play 3 atb, that seems okay. But should prob have a fourth defender to fill the gaps when LFC has an awful fix or when doherty has a bad one.

Also find it interesting that you highlight Doherty. Their defence have "elite-ish" stats with regards to xGconceded, but somehow they've only kept 5 cleans this year. I, personally, believe its down to Rui Patricio.

So i'll rebuttle your Doherty with this:
        - Wolves have kept 5cs in 20 gwks
        - Dock has gotten 7 attacking returns (3 goals / four assists)
        - Dock is averaging 4.4 pts pr game

Kola has 1cs and 4 assists in 10 starts, averaging 3.9 pts pr game.

I personally believe its a good strategy to own both.

They leak goals for fun and last nights game aside, they haven't been on it recently. I sold Kola as there are just so many options around the price imo, Pereira the most recent one coming to the fore who I bought a couple of GWs ago. In saying Kola is back on my radar.

        I agree with you....

The "5m-bracket" is currently where the most value is, as they are cheap enough to rotate.

        Doherty: 4,4 pts pr game
        Pereira: 5,1 pts pr game
        TAA: 5,7 pts pr game
        Kola: 3,9 pts pr game
        Digne: 3,9 pts pr game

That would be my backline if I was on WC right now. Out of the five names, i'd argue strongly that Kola is the one that looks most likely to improve his numbers.

Similar to Digne - relying heavily on attacking promise but no chance of getting clean sheets. Will do that move in GW27 I think but no rush for Kola. Not even sure how Monreal will effect his minutes when he is back either.

Monreal, Lichtsteiner, Kolasinac, Bellerin, Koscielny, Mustafi, Sokratis, Mavropanos all for 4-5 places each week. I'm not sure what Emery's plan to improve the defence is, but something has to change.

If it's simply to play 3 proper CBs, that leaves Monreal competing with Kolasinac. The same if the solution is to play 2 CBs. I think Kolasinac is more at risk than most players in the league of being substitued before 60 mins, given Emery's penchant for early changes and switching up the system during the game.

There's also Xhaka and Maitland-Niles to deputise in these positions, which I suppose is unlikely without injuries mounting back up again.

I can see Kolasinac owners being rewarded or dissapointed or both, but I think there are other players who offer more in the long-term.

FWIW I disagree with those who say that CSs are the breat and butter of defenders. I just want points; I don't care where they come from. Willian only gets 1 point for clean sheets, yet many prefered him to Alonso last season, despite Alonso's goal-hanging tendencies. I know I mixing up arguments, here, since there's also the fact they are in different positions, but a 5.0 player with a high xGI shouldn't be discounted because his team has a bad defence (I remember Kola was discounted last season, too, by many people who claimed that Arsenal would get no CSs. - It's just poor language use, but it's clearly justifying poor logic). Points will come from multiple sources, including clean sheets. But he should be discounted for other reasons, if at all, because I think his expected points can easily match others in the price range (except TAA), if he were nailed.

I would advise to buy for the fun of it, and be surprised and delighted if he does well for you. Likewise, if you are already sick of Digne and others, then he is not a bad alternative. But he does come with a big fat warning label imo.

      1. WesMantooth
        • 13 Years

I agree re pts not CS. Just tried to make a point out of how Arsenal only has to improve slightly with regards to CS, and then his pointsceiling will "skyrocket".

Every defender must play in a team with the ability to keep cs. ARS are an absolute no go.

        • 13 Years
        5 years, 4 months ago

As cs's is the most important source of points for defenders, its gonna sound stupid to disagree, but I do.

Anomaly's will occur, and Kola mightbe close to being one. As long as the player is getting points, it doesnt matter whether they get them from cs's or not.

The only important factors are: points pr game, price and reliability of playing.

People are loving doherty but wolves have only kept 5 cleans. Kola has "better" attacking numbers than Doherty.

Relived/reassured that someone else in the community is seeing what I’m seeing with both the attacking stats and the eye test regarding Kolasinac!

Fully agree with comments above that attacking defenders with clean sheet potential are the aspiration for all fantasy managers. That’s why Liverpool’s backline is rightly in demand at the moment.

But after that what’s next? Personally I want to enjoy playing FPL, watching games and get points. That’s why I think attacking defenders with the outside chance of clean sheet are next on my shopping list (Doherty, Digne, Kolasinac). Love watching a game and your full backs bombing on with high chance of assists/goals (positive) rather than anxiously watching relying on

Whoops! rather than anxiously watching waiting for a mistake that wipes out your clean sheet. Then if they deliver both there is outside chance of a double digit haul and bonus from a budget player.

Doherty, TAA and Robertson/Alsono are all currently nailed in my back line. Agree you need a solid 4th to rotate around best fixtures (more important for defense imo) so for me it’s between Digne and Kola. I watched the full 90 minutes of both Everton and Arsenal games yesterday to come to my decision on which to get (as full games can see positions they are running into and not receiving the ball or missing passes which highlights don’t show). My eye test conclusion is Kolasinac over Digne. Played as a winger whole game and constantly bombing on, overlapping. Enjoyable to watch as an FPl asset and a BPS magnet. Rotation is a slight risk, but as soon as hint of can swap to Digne (started recent games since moved to back 3).

in the 5m bracket TAA & Doherty stand above all others, with Digne/Kola/Pereira/Shaw all equivalent options in my view.

Pereira currently has more points than doherty.
Utd defence havent been better than efc or ars this year. shaw has half the attacking threat of Digne and only a third of Kola.

The 5m bracket is gold this year. Makes it sensible to hold several of the mentioned players.

I personally think nailing the cleanies is more important now, ive had digne doherty Taa for xmas and it really didnt do well for Doh and Dig except that 17pt haul for Dig.

im not saying Dig wont haul big again im sure he will, but im now focusing on spurs pool and palace to build my defence around.

I wildcarded and have gone double pool, trippier and wb and guaita in goal.

    A. Son+Auba >> Salah+Arnie
    B. Martial+Auba >> Salah+Ings
    C. Other?

    Fabianski
    Digne • Doherty • Kolasinac
    Hazard • Son • Rich • FAnderson • Martial
    Kane • Aubameyang
    (Button / Schindler / AWB / Kamara)

Would look like Hazard, unless you can somehow save enough elsewhere to get Son who misses some games up to Salah

This ! You simply cannot have them all - I also would like to have Kane Auba Kun Haz Salah Sterling but that is why this game has financial element - otherwise 99% of the teams would have been the same 🙂

I would ship Aubameyang out of those options, but any one of them could come back to bite you, but that’s the risk I guess! Be the logical move though. Look at Jimenez over Arnie I would suggest

No, I was saying that you can lose Son as you have cover with Kane for Spurs and will need him, you also have Martial to cover Man U although I would swap for Pogba at some point. Also be careful with Arnie, always slow to get going after injury and you may want to look at Jiminez for now.

I would just look at Wilson how is he doing - he has been quite poor last few weeks being subbed around 60th minute (just to point out that I have him as well). So if he does nothing I would ditch him despite their kind run of fixtures - probably for Arni
Rest of the team looks good - maybe you can ditch snoddy - too strong bench - Sonny snoddy to Haz and bench feeder looks tempting to me
