What FPL managers can expect from Brighton winger Leandro Trossard

Graham Potter has made his second signing since being appointed manager of Brighton and Hove Albion.

Belgian winger Leandro Trossard (£6.0m in Fantasy Premier League) has joined the Seagulls for an undisclosed fee, penning a four-year contract.

Trossard heads to Albion from Genk, where he scored 14 goals and registered seven assists in 34 league outings for the Belgian side in 2018/19.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who plays primarily on the left flank, follows in the footsteps of Portsmouth centre-back Matthew Clarke (£4.5m) in making the move to Brighton.

Defender Matthew Clarke (in blue) signed a four-year deal with Brighton days before Leandro Trossard’s capture was announced

Sporadic interest in Glenn Murray (£6.0m) and Pascal Gross (£6.5m) aside, we have generally been more focused on Brighton’s defenders from a Fantasy perspective in the Chris Hughton era.

The Seagulls have averaged less than a goal a game in each of their first two seasons as a Premier League club.

The appointment of the more forward-thinking Potter may change the defence-first mentality that was favoured by Hughton, as we discussed in our recent report on the former Swansea City manager.

Pre-season will certainly be an interesting watch, given that Brighton have one of the best opening run of fixtures in the first six Gameweeks of 2019/20.

Upon signing for the Seagulls, Trossard said of his conversations with Potter:

He told me that he wants to change the system a little bit to get more attractive football, like attacking, more my style.

I think that’s the most important thing for me, that I can fit in the team and help the team get results.

Trossard’s comments are a further indication that Potter will attempt to show a bit more ambition going forward next season.

The new Brighton boss added:

We are delighted to welcome Leandro to the club and excited about the impact he can have for us.

He’s an attack-minded player who had a very impressive season last year in helping Genk win the league title.

He was influential in the side’s success last term and scored a lot of goals, as well as creating chances for others.

At 24 he also brings good experience, having captained the side and also featured many times in the Europa League.

The History and Statistics

Trossard celebrates his goal in the 2016/17 Europa League quarter-final tie against Celta Vigo

Born in the municipality of Maasmechelen in December 1994, Trossard joined Genk’s youth academy in 2010 and has been on the books of his boyhood club ever since – although has had four loan spells away from the club.

Trossard’s first taste of senior football came as a 17-year-old at the end of the 2011/12 campaign, a four-minute cameo against Gent in the Jupiler Pro League play-offs being his only run-out that season.

A loan spell at second-tier club Lommel United followed in 2012/13, with Trossard scoring seven goals in 12 run-outs.

Trossard scored on only three occasions in 17 league appearances for Westerlo the following campaign, before the young winger rejoined Lommel for a second time in 2014/15.

Trossard hit the back of the net on 16 occasions in 33 run-outs for the Proximus League club, also finding the target once in the end-of-season play-offs.

After three years in the Belgian second tier, Trossard’s breakthrough campaign in the Jupiler Pro League came in 2015/16 – although not with Genk.

Trossard’s fourth and final loan spell saw him join OH Leuven in the top flight, where he registered 15 attacking returns (eight goals, seven assists) in 30 appearances.

The past three seasons have seen Trossard establish himself in the first team at Genk, although injury affected his availability in 2017/18.

His league record (including play-offs) from 2016/17 onwards reads:

YearApps (Starts + Sub)GoalsAssists
2016/1731 (19+12)63
2017/1816 (14+2)72
2018/1934 (32+2)147

Trossard had his first taste of European football in 2016/17, scoring three goals as Genk made it to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

The new Brighton signing and his club made it to the round of 32 in the same competition last season, with Trossard registering eight goals and three assists in 11 appearances on the continent.

Trossard was made the captain of Genk midway through last season, leading his club to their first league title since 2010/11.

The Prospects

Alireza Jahanbakhsh didn’t manage a single attacking return in 2018/19

A multi-million-pound signing of a goalscoring winger from Europe is treated with as much caution as it is excitement in the Fantasy community these days.

In our recent Scout Report of Moussa Djenepo we cited the cautionary tale of Mohamed Elyounoussi (£5.5m), who was snapped up by Southampton 12 months ago for a reported £16m.

Having registered 26 attacking returns in his final campaign with Basel, Elyounoussi finished his debut Premier League season without a single goal or assist to his name.

For Elyounoussi at Southampton, read Alireza Jahanbakhsh (£6.0m) at Brighton.

The Iranian winger banked 33 attacking returns in his farewell season at AZ Alkmaar, finishing as the Eredivisie top scorer with 21 goals.

Like Southampton’s misfiring Norwegian, Jahanbakhsh ended an admittedly injury-affected 2018/19 campaign without having recorded a single goal or assist in FPL.

The upside for Trossard is that he will be playing under a manager with a more positive mindset than Jahanbakhsh did last season, so attacking players may flourish in this new-look Brighton side.

Potter may even have plans to play both of these wingers in his seemingly favoured 4-2-3-1, although he is well-stocked with other options on the flanks in the form of Solly March (£5.0m), Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m), Jurgen Locadia (£5.5m) and the permanently crocked Jose Izquierdo (£5.5m).

Izquierdo, indeed, will miss the start of the 2019/20 season after having further knee surgery.

Given that Trossard played for a title-winning side in the Belgian top tier, it will be no surprise that he comes out of a direct comparison with his new teammates for underlying stats very positively:

PlayerMins per shotMins per shot in boxMins per shot on targetMins per big chanceMins per key passMins per big chance created

Knockaert67.9122.2203.7916.552306
Gross78.2117.3208.4312.735208

Apart from Gross’s superior rate of key passes and Murray’s lower average for big chances, Trossard comes out on top in all of the above categories.

Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) was the only first-team regular in the Premier League to have a better minutes-per-chance average than Trossard, meanwhile.

Trossard’s total of 126 shots was better than all other FPL midfielders bar Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), while the Egyptian and Sadio Mane (£11.5m) were the only players in the Belgian’s position to register more shots in the box (68).

Trossard was presented with 16 big chances, which would have seen him ranked joint-sixth among FPL midfielders.

A total of 72 key passes was inferior to only eight Fantasy midfielders, while 14 big chances created was bettered by just four players in this positional group.

Lucas Digne (£6.0m), Matt Ritchie (£5.5m) and Ryan Fraser (£7.5m) were the only Premier League players to deliver more crosses than Trossard in 2018/19 – all FPL assets, like the Belgian, who took free-kicks and corners for their respective sides.

The huge asterisk next to all of Trossard’s statistics is that these were numbers recorded in the Jupiler Pro League, not the English top flight.

Most of the winger’s averages will likely worsen significantly next season, such is the gulf in class between the two divisions.

The Belgian seems likely to challenge for a spot on the left flank, according to journalist David Van den Broeck, although could operate in ‘the hole’ if Potter opts for a 4-2-3-1.

In an interview with regional newspaper The Argus, den Broeck said:

Genk for the last five or six years have played 4-3-3. He has played as a left-winger all the time.

If you asked him his favourite position he would say number ten behind the striker as well, but that is a usual thing with wingers, they like to play in a central position, but he is better with space on the left.

He has a good left foot as well. Izquierdo, when he played in Belgium, was good but quite predictable because he was always coming inside onto his right foot.

Trossard can come inside, go outside, no problem. His shot is his main quality. When he is around 16 metres and he has got the opportunity to shoot he can put them nicely in the top corner with both feet.

He is a small guy who can turn easily around defenders with his quick acceleration.

We usually preach a “wait and see” policy with signings such as these and in Djenepo’s case, that would seem to be sensible given how tricky Southampton’s fixtures look (with a few exceptions) in the first 13 Gameweeks of the campaign.

Trossard and Brighton, though, are towards the top of our Season Ticker in the first six Gameweeks, with matches against West Ham, Southampton, Burnley, Newcastle and Watford to come in that period.

We’ll have a careful eye on the Seagulls in pre-season, then, to see if we have a potential mid-price gem on our hands or just another import to overlook for Gameweek 1.

With Gross being available for only £0.5m more and having already demonstrated his Fantasy potential in 2017/18, Trossard will have to dazzle in pre-season for many of us just to consider him the go-to Brighton option, never mind a player able to compete with the likes of Dwight McNeil, Roberto Pereyra and Miguel Almiron in the £6.0m bracket.

    Defensive Dilemma!

I see a lot of people advocating going big in defence to start the season Laporte, TAA, Robbo, Digne etc (sometimes I think you all do this purely for the acronyms!)

However with VAR and new hand ball rule isn’t the number of penalties likely to increase materially and thus the clean sheet probability decrease materially? If so, wouldn’t that make defenders worse value than last season?

Extra thought: Lots of the teams I am seeing appear to be targeting last years points

even if they were worse value than last season i still think a 7.0 defender will outscore a 7.0 mid soooo I'm going big at the back - alos love an acronym!

From VAR & hand ball rule perspective, safest would be to invest in penalty takers.

Thanks - it’s the hand ball Rule which will be assessed by VAR which I think could cause it to increase

Apart from the fixture list, last season's points are all we have to go on at the moment with squads incomplete and pre-season fixtures not yet underway.

Insofar as that involves City and Liverpool I'd say it's a reasonable assumption.
Wouldn't be the same for Wolves, but their options don't look too popular.

How good could Zinchenko be for FPL this year if he turned into city’s go-to utility man?

With his versatility I wonder is there a good chance he gets 30+ starts but that they’re just spread across filling in at LB, LW & even as an auxiliary DM

If he nails down the LB spot, he could be the cheapest route into their backline, which makes him interesting. I do foresee some rotation with Mendy, but he was so impressive towards the end of last season (City won every PL game and hardly conceded with him in the 11) and Pep loves him too.

Personally I don't think the versatility thing will come into fruition tho. He didn't start a game anywhere else last season. They have Fernandinho at DM, also Gundogan who performed well, and possibly Rodri incoming. Sterling, Bernardo, Mahrez, Sane etc on the flanks.

Seems unlikely seeing as he's only ever played left back for the club. City have better options in those other positions.

Whilst LB certainly look his most likely route in... he actually played as DM in the win over Burnley in GW36 (city also kept an away CS so potential for a repeat under the right circumstances) and also started at LM albeit in the league cup third round this season....

Interestingly in 16/17 whilst at PSV he played almost every position across midfield - centre, left, and right - including a couple of CL games so he’s no stranger to the positions.... but at ciy he certainly does look to be earmarked primarily as a LB

The longer city go without signing a holding mid though, the further along he is in the queue for a CM/DM slot (currently behind Fern, KDB, Gundogan, Bilva etc obviously)

I suppose the way in which Pep sometimes uses his full backs you could say he operates in the DM zone. I think the match you flagged up against Burnley was when he kind of formed a double pivot alongside Gundogan, with Walker, Kompany and Laporte as a back 3? At other times during that match he was the one offering width on the flank tho. Interesting regardless, and he's definitely on my watchlist, although I'm currently favouring 3 City midfielders.

Looks fantastic FPL-wise evrytime I've seens him. Unlike Mendy, who goes out wide to whip a ball in, you can always see his instincts are always central. So he keeps on making underlapping runs instead of overlapping, nearer to the box. A wicked passer of the ball as well.
Nailed in my team if he starts most of preseason.

I just hope we get some clarity on this LB slot as pre season progresses

Either him or a Mendy would be absolute FPL Gold at their prices if they have a high degree of certainty over starts - either would instantly become much better value than Laporte imo

(If they were nailed obviously - if not, Laporte is still the safety first option)

He offers things Zinchenko doesn't - better attacking support as better defensive capability. I think he will see many games, and that's after Mendy's arbitrary 7 games a season.

I am put off Brighton defence after Duffy (C) thing from last season now. There is the perception that Brighton at the Amex are a tough nut to crack. However their last 8 games of the season at home saw 5 defeats, 2 draws & 1 win, conceding 16 goals over that period (the worst of all sides).

I've been lurking around here for years and this time there certainly is a lot of consent around Digne but just cant squeeze that 0.5 out of anywhere. Although at time it doesnt feel too flexible, I'm pretty set on 5 - 3 - 2 until the international break WC so cant downgrade Ake, betting on Richarlison being explosive early on and then switching to the next Mahrez. Attached to Jimenez as he was in my team the whole of last season and is doing well at the Copa.. Coleman will do.

It's solid. My only concern is that only one of your subs might take to the field, which is a prob if Zinky is dropped and Jimi is knackered after a Thursday night.

          Specifically:
          Jimenez has Europa
King is not accurate enough to be consistent.
Richarlison is streaky. You might get lucky ...
You will crap yourself at the end of every Citeh and 'Pool match.
Digne is a pre-Season must have.
IF I were doing what you are attempting, I would get Holebas in that end slot.

Agreed on Jimi but what other 7.5 and under strikers would you consider? Maybe Deulo but he played few minutes last year, why is that? Wood or Murray? Ihh...
King even so will get 120-130 points till the end of the season.
            Rich is a bet
You always crap yourself when holding to your clean sheets - last season shows Citeh and 'Pool are not too bad here
Will think about Digne if I downgrade King to maybe that Che Adams guy

Obviously subjective but for me, Siggy is the kind of player you keep the whole season. I hope Rich will do another start like last year and I'll catch 2 hauls in the first 4 gw and then move to a more promising under 7 m midfielder - those gems show up quite quickly.

so many different options, created this trying to cram as many 6+PPM and 4.5+PPM as possible:

-Travers and Boruc actually had really good PPM last season for some reason?..start with great fixtures
-formation came down to Siggy v Jimenez, went Siggy for fixtures
-means playing Jorginho most weeks, but can he do a Mili from those early fixtures?

    Travers (Button)
    TAA VVD Digne Trippier BurnleyTaylor
    Salah Sterling Fraser Siggy (Jorginho)
    Wilson (4.5 4.5)

Travers is not nailed. Started 2 games at end of last season so how is he suddenly the number one goalie? Is Button supposed to be Boruc then?
There are lots of decent 6m or 6.5m forwards so I don't think it wise to start off with two 4.5m forwards. Means 2 tranfers needed straight away to jump on other budget forward bandwagons.

I remember Neves being in a lot of teams. Promptly scored a belter of a free kick on the first day, and then did virtually nothing for months.

I know the Everton defenders had a strong finish to the season, but I think it will be the Everton boys that people start getting rid of first. Siggy was patchy at the best of times, and the 6.0/5.5 for Digne/Coleman will be burning a hole in people's pockets if they're not producing returns.

Fluke assist when he was fouled just outside the box, and Neves banged in the FK. Looked scared and over-awed by the occasion of a first PL match. Was way too safe and didn't take enough chances. Knew I made a mistake and quickly jumped on Richarlison.

Like it a lot, but Ederson even at 6 is good value (at City, only Sterling and Aguero at twice the price, and Laporte outscored him). I'd fund him by getting Vardy for Kane and afford a bench.

Ederson was in my initial draft. Kane ultimately depends on Spurs transfer window, he was hampered by injuries and the lack of a Spurs midfield last season. Dele is another I am looking at, if he plays further forward I think he could be great this season

I'm not sure i'm jumping on this big at the back bandwagon, especially the double up / triple up on Liverpool defence.

Do people really think the Liverpool trio are going to break 200pts each again, will they really get 10+ assists each again? I'm confident last season was an outlier from the norm for Liverpool and taking their performance out of the equation gives a much truer reflection of expectation and i would expect them to revert back to mean. Don't get me wrong, i will start with one of them in my side as they will be one of the best two or three sides defensively but double or triple up seems madness. In fact, since the start of the 12/13 season, defenders priced above 6m at season start (who played at least 2200 minutes or 2/3rds of available game time) have averaged 146 points.

21 Clean sheets for Liverpool is the best from any year in the last 10 seasons of premier league history. Teams know they need to press Liverpool's flanks to prevent TAA & Robbo getting forward and again they had an exceptional year in terms of assists. Other distractions as well like the club world champ are squeezing their fixture list further too. The top scoring defender is usually in the high 170's (as per Laporte this year). To highlight this these are the top 3 sides for clean sheets (last 10 years) and top DF scorer / most Df assists (since 12/13 season as don't have earlier data).

    18/19
    Liverpool 21

    09/10

TL:DR - Liverpool's clean sheet record and their full backs assist record last season seems like an outlier from the mean i would expect some regression meaning a double / triple up could be risky.

I too expect regression and probably there's no way they are gonna break 200 pts again but they are still good value and doubling up is more than a viable option.

It is easier to start with the Liverpool double up at home to Norwich and bank the points. Assess after a few games and one can be downgraded to a budget bandwagon if say Robbo was easily outscoring Trent and racking up all the bonus and assists.

Liv defence has 58% chance for cs in the first game. TAA has corners and set piece threat. VvD is aerial threat in corners. They have also VvD and quality gk now.

Salah and Mane are attacking quality players and opponents must defend also against them.

Doesn’t this just mean that they’re priced too cheap, as they scored around 40 points more than the previous top scoring defenders, but priced the same...?

      Sounds illogical to me.

The guy has had talent from a young age, but he's been plagued by so many personal issues. Shame really, hoped he'd get over it with age, but I don't think he has. Will have to see.

or get Patrick van Aanholt for 5.5m . He had the most (29) shots of all defenders in home games, last season with David Luiz (27) & Marcos Alonso (24) in 2nd & 3rd respectively.

thoughts on this back line peeps?

    Pickford (Button)

    Robbo, Walker, Trippier (Kelly, Stearman)

Thinking of dropping 0.5 and downgrading trippier and upgrading Button to Ryan.

    any advice would be appreciated.

How about Trippier to Coleman and a keeper rotation of Heaton and Ryan instead? Then you can upgrade one of your benched defenders with the change.

GW4 is terrible for both Ryan & Heaton.

        Heaton v LIV

        Ryan v MCI

Liverpool usually struggle at Burnley, Heaton could be good for maybe 3 points there, it’s not like you can reasonably expect 6+ points every week is it.

Could Barkley be an option? Injuries to Loftus-Cheek and Hudson-Odoi, new manager and a complete lack of attacking options at Chelsea may give him the nod in behind a lone striker.

Think he's going under the radar. RLC and CHO injuries have really opened up Barkley as an option.
Its a wait and see from me. Just don't trust him just yet. If he inpresses in preseason, I'll be more open to the idea of buying and playing Barkley.

What a beast the guy is. Ridiculously powerful runner with the ball at his feet. Its like the ball sticks to his boots.

    Rmt

    Ryan
    Ritchie | Digne | TAA | Trippier
    Salah | Siggy | Milivojevic
    Auba | Vardy | King

Going without any City at all is brave. Ritchie is a wait and see for me, see who comes in and where he is going to be playing. There are a few rumours Trippier might be off to pastures new. Rest looks solid. Happy with Auba over Kane?

Just to add to the big at the back zeitgeist, apparently more clean sheets in August than other month from last 9 seasons (so not insignificant sample size). I'd be slightly skeptical about factoring in without knowing which teams got the Boosts to averages (is it the worst one in which case not selecting them anyway) and the handball rule, but an interesting one adding weight to going big to start with pre early wildcard

yeah, had a quick look and the stats back this up. August is rife for clean sheets. Def worth targeting the big hitters early on. I think once Champions league and Europa league kicks in September the cleanies dry up. Could be a good time to downgrade or use the first wildcard aswell.

Well it's fair to assume Liverpool and City were responsible for a high proportion. Everton have good defenders and juicy fixtures, which is why I'm filling my defence with players from those 3 - no one else gets a look in.

Not ruling anything out, but I'm happier with the choice of the 6 - 7m defenders than I am with the 6 - 7m attackers.

I’m having most success with 532 and 532. Double Liverpool and Everton defence looks nice though.

            5-3-2 I played with,

            4.5m x 2
            VvD Robertson Digne Laporte Tripper
            Sterling Zaha Maddison
            Kane Rashford

Not for me, I'd downgrade Wilson and upgrade Kante, I suspect he'll go back to playing deeper and it's not like he was doing much in a more advanced position anyway.
