Fantasy managers will very likely learn more about Chelsea assets from pre-season than they can from the Blues’ performances in 2018/19.

There has been a regime change at Stamford Bridge this summer, with Frank Lampard being appointed as head coach following the departure of the Juventus-bound Maurizio Sarri.

As a result, there’ll be a different system and style in place in west London next season to the regimented 4-3-3 ‘Sarri-ball’ we have become accustomed to over the last 12 months.

Lampard has already experimented with a 4-2-3-1, a 4-4-2 diamond and 4-1-4-1 in Chelsea’s pre-season fixtures so far and the aggressive press that he favoured at Derby County has been in evidence, too.

READ MORE: What Fantasy managers can expect from Frank Lampard

We Fantasy managers are also faced with the task of preparing for life without Eden Hazard for the first time in seven years.

How well the Blues can cope with their talisman’s exit is uncertain, particularly as their two-window transfer ban is still in operation.

There is still something to be gained by looking at the statistics from last season, however, to see which areas Lampard may need to address and which players could possibly shine following Hazard’s departure.

I'm hoping that Reid gets some minutes for the Hammers, but he's probably not going to start, as I think Diop and Balbuena are ahead of him in the pecking order.

Who will come out on top at the end of next season?

The old guard who are resistant to change and who are starting the season with "price points" throughout their team?

Or the new breed of Maverick FPL manager who dares to play 4 or 5 premium defenders at the back and who has an unbalanced, bottom-heavy team?

No, he's got a good point. It's a fair argument to observe that the Liverpool and City defences were game-changers last season. I think all 3 of Robbo, TAA and VVD are actually under-priced and having 2 or even 3 of them along with Laporte and Ederson as season-keepers will prove money well spent at the end of the season. In terms of value, PPMillion they blew mids and strikers out of the water.

For those wondering why Vestergaard, Yoshida, Adams, WardProwse, McCarthy and Romeu were not in the squad vs Preston.

Apparently, Southampton had a "behind closed doors" friendly vs Brentford the day before. I would go so far as to guess that those players who were absent played a significant role in that game, and so were rested vs Preston.

Whispers are that we won 3-0 against a strong Brentford team. Nothing confirmed, just word on the street stuff.

Kelly is Palace's 4th choice CB. Their first 2 are currently injured and Dann is third. If both Sakho and Tomkins are still injured GW1 Kelly will probably start, but if either one is fit, he won't. Also, they may well buy a defender with AWB money.
Even if Kelly plays GW1 he'll be dropped soon enough. Given his ownership I'm tipping him to be the first 3.9 in the game, giving owners a transfer headache.

Nothing to do with yesterday, but I've had Greenwood in my draft since day one and he's not shifting. Gutted to see a bandwagon forming. 7% already, will be 20% in 3 weeks, dammit. Boy is class. No other 4.5 striker, Nketia included come close. Both will get a little game-time off the bench, Eddie for 1-pointers, Mason for goals.

Keeper-with-relegation-favourite aside, it looks excellent to me. You've gone the minority path of Aguero over Sterling - fair call.
For a little more security should any of your 3 City assets be rotated, I'd upgrade your 5th defender to a playing 4.5. Digne>Coleman could cover that.

Good question, it may be the season we need to pay up or be confident in the fact that the saved 0.5 -1.5 will more than offset the potential points deficit.

Pope/Heaton - just pencil in 'Burnley keeper' and confirm last minute. They're same price and equally good. I think it'll be Pope though.

Waldo - I agree. I'm stumping up for Ederson. IF I went 4.5 I'd be avoiding Brighton.
After Pope, I think Gunn would be second choice, and I'm taking note of Henderson, 99% certain to be a 4.5 at Sheff United in a few days.

Kane burned my a number of times last year dropping deep into midfield and with injuries.

However if Kane is back to his best of a couple of years ago he could be a bargain at 11m.

Finding it hard to get him though with Salah and Sterling in my team and the general rule that premium defenders offer better value for money.

What is everyone else’s thoughts on Kane this year? Worth 11m or steer clear?

    1. Andy_Social
      • 14 Years

Can't have a balanced team with all 3. Many have tried.
Re. Kane, my personal feeling is won't start firing until Son is back GW3 and the defence looks unsettled, so I'm waiting a few weeks before bringing in any Spuds.
If you insist on a premium striker, you'll need to lose one of the mids.

Thoughts? I went heavy into defense and balanced scoring, more of a points for money spent approach this year. Mane/Debruyne will most likely carry the C most of the year. I am not really set on Zaha and Luiz though.

    Pickford (Button)
    Alexander-Arnold / VVD / Digne/ David Luiz (Kelly)
Mane / Richarlison / De Bruyne / Zaha (Stephens)
    Jimenez / King (Pukki)

Generally pretty good. Mane might well be rested for the start of the season, so keep an eye on that. Zaha also needs a rest after AfCon. Wolves' Europa campaign starts this week so check if Jimi is fresh or need resting. Pukki is too expensive to sit on the bench and he has horrible early fixtures - maybe one for later.

    Ryan (Button)
    Laporte/ Robertson/ TAA/ Digne (4.0)
    Siggy/ Salah/ Fraser/ Madison (Dendoncker)
    Wilson/ Rashford (Greenwood)

    I am torn between
    A) Salah and Laporte

      Good.
I've got 2 bugbears. One involves 4m defenders as albatrosses, so I'd go option B.
The other is Brighton goalkeepers - I see few points there.

Not sure about that. For me, Leicester and Hammers have powerful attacks now but still vulnerable at the back. I don't think this years 5m keepers add any value. I'd go either 4.5 Pope, or find 5.5-6m for a premium keeper.

Had another play around, I'm struggling putting my money at the back (I'm old school)
How does this look could Zinchenco be a better option than Coleman? My other thoughts are Sterling to KDB or downgrade Ederson for some extra funds

    Ederson (Button)

    TAA Robertson Coleman Cathcart (Rico)

    Sterling Salah Tielemans Fraser (Dendoncker)

    Wilson Jota (Greenwood)

Keep Ederson. Don’t be tempted to save a pittance to upgrade another player to a slightly better one. Tbh your team looks as good as any I’ve seen so just leave it until after the charity shield.

It's good. I assume you've got no bench. Maybe less disastrous than some as you have 11 Starters. Don't see milli in many RMTs these days.

Miliv underrated on here IMO, not very exciting but I want nailed to start with.

Only issue I can see is you might end up with 10 men if incase your main forward gets rested but that rarely happens

Switching formation wont be tricky either, just couple of transfers will do the job.

    A or B?

    A: Ryan + Wilson

    B: Ederson + King

Heres the rest of the team:

    ????? - (Button)
    Robbo - VVD - Zinchenko - Digne - (Reid)
    Salah(C) - Sterling - Sigurdsson - Perez - Brooks
    ????? - (Greenwood) - (Nketiah)

B would mean 3 liv and 3 city but not sure if King as the one up front will be way too light?

Agreed. Ryan plays for a crap team with a crap defence. You may think you’re being clever saving the 1.5m but you won’t be able to use it elsewhere and make the 60+ points Ederson will get you.

It's not just that. I see a perfectly reasonable strategy in going with a 4.5 keeper even if I don't myself.
But not him. People seem to think the Ryan-Button double up is clever. I say it isn't. If you want to start a 4.5 go with Pope or Gunn. I hear things about Henderson who'll be 4.5 at SheffUnited. They are all better than Ryan.

Not saying it’s going to happen again - but City generated 25 attacking returns in their first 5 games last season...Bilva played in all 5, starting 4 & coming on in 1

He got 1 of those 25 returns

Superb player IRL... but a bit of a frustration in FPL - could do well though, but not for me

I'm looking at the squads of Liverpool and City. Mane, Salah, Firmino, Aguero, Jesus, Mahrez - all involved in summer tournaments, possibly a bit tired at the start of the season. Liverpool lack depth, so I'm tempted to focus on their defence and forego Salah and Mane. City, however, have De Bruyne, Sterling and Bilva and I think will be 100% potent up top from GW1. I've rigged up a Salahless draft that looks very strong, with a midfield partnership of Sterling and De Bruyne. No need to downgrade to Bilva to save cash.

Could. I'm not a sheep though. My point is he might start but may be 10% under par, as will other attacking players. It's a hunch - if I'm wrong I'll get murdered; if I'm right, I leave the sheep in my wake. That's the way the game goes.

People forget that there is the community shield before the league kicks off. Then we would have an insight of those who played cup competitions for their countries and if they can start the first PL match.

Personally, I believe both Liverpool and City will start with their best teams in gameweek 1. Most likely their strongest. Managers do not take the first League match of a season for granted. The first match plays a vital part in achieving the season's objective and team morale early on.

The community shield can still be considered as a preparation so I think some players could still be rested, if they are not 100% fit.

So it really sucks when I see people write Firmino, Mané, Agüero, Richarlison etc. won't start their games against Norwich, West ham etc.

besides 2-3 weeks break before the season opener is enough for these players to recover. They have had their own pre season with their national teams so Fitness is not an issue if they get 2-3 weeks break before the season begins. Just ask yourself, is there any footballer in the world who would not love to start the first match of the season asides mesut özil?

Yeah I’d honestly not describe captaining Salah at home to a newly promoted team as a “sheep” move - some of those doing it will be sheep of course, but that’s a very different thing to it being a “sheep” move 🙂

Personally I try to steer clear of trying to be too clever in FPL as it usually (but NOT always!!) ends in tears

Wilson is way better fpl asset than the Portuguese magician.
Also, 4.5m Midfielder may give you 2 pointers if needed which none of 4.5m strikers atm (unless Greenwood keeps scoring for fun and forces his way into United 11 & our FPL teams of course 😉 )
