The FPL lessons learned from Wolves’ Europa League debut

Wolves 2-0 Crusaders

Goals: Diogo Jota (£6.5m), Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m)

Assists: Adama Traoré (£5.0m), Joao Moutinho (£5.5m)

Diogo Jota (£6.5m) picked up where 2018/19 left off as he scored Wolves first competitive goal of the new campaign.

Amid plenty of Fantasy interest this summer, the Portuguese international gave his side a deserved lead in the 37th minute at Molineux.

Loitering in the penalty box he pulled off a piece of exceptional technique as he slammed in Adama Traoré‘s (£5.0m) cross, which came in just behind him, on the half-volley.

In their first proper fixture of 2019/20, Nuno Espirito Santo retained Wolves’ 3-5-2 system which helped them to great success last term.

Fantasy managers will have been pleased to see the wing-backs continuing to play an important part in Wolves’ attacking play.

Traoré, standing in for the injured Matt Doherty (£6.0m), was effectively playing as a wide-forward on the right and it was this space that allowed him to cross for Jota’s first goal.

Meanwhile, Jonny (£5.5m) added found himself in plenty of space on the left, while it was his replacement Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m) whose advanced positioning led to the third goal.

Joao Moutinho (£5.5m) played a ball into the box from deep, where Vinagre was waiting at the back post and he was able to tuck the ball away after goalkeeper Sean O’Neill allowed it to squirm through his grasp.

It must be said that the end-product of the wing-backs was a little inconsistent on the night but it is still early days in pre-season so this might be an area that improves closer to Gameweek 1.

Elsewhere in the team, there was another start at centre-forward for budget midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.0m).

He has been deployed alongside Jota in all three of Wolves’ pre-season matches now, including the Europa League win over Crusaders, scoring against Newcastle and offering the outside chance of an exceptional out-of-position opportunity this season.

However, we do just have to temper any excitement over Gibbs-White as a Fantasy asset this year with some disclaimers.

The first is that he had been playing up-front while Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) was absent from friendly matches as a result of his extended leave following the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

After his time off, the Mexican is already back in the Wolves fold, named on the bench on Thursday night and coming on in the 58th minute.

With two weeks to go until Gameweek 1, we have to assume that Jiménez will be working towards starting at Leicester on Sunday, August 11.

However, Doherty might also hold the key here as it is his injury that is forcing Nuno to deploy Traoré at right wing-back.

If Doherty is back in time for Gameweek 1, then Traoré might also be in the frame for a centre-forward berth if Jiménez is not necessarily ready in time.

On the injury front, Wolves will currently be sweating on the fitness of central midfielder Ruben Neves (£5.5m).

He was replaced in the 58th minute with a side injury and was taken to hospital after the game for scans.

“(Neves) is struggling. Let’s see. It was a hard knock and he’s in pain now. We will take care of him.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Jota (right) had several chances to score against Crusaders

How much we can take forward from this game is tricky to assess though.

Obviously, the level of opposition Wolves faced was not exactly at Premier League level. Crusaders finished fourth in last season’s Northern Ireland Premiership, qualifying for the Europa League through winning the Irish Cup.

Furthermore, the club only offered players their first professional contracts at the start of last season.

For that reason, many might have expected Wolves to win by a bigger margin but there are still a few mitigating factors here.

Crusaders spent virtually the entire game sitting in a compact formation, with two banks of five, in an attempt to frustrate Wolves’ play. That’s a difficult prospect for even top-flight teams, especially at this early stage of pre-season.

“It’s tough, the season starts earlier. Players come in on different dates.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Despite the Irish side trying to make things difficult for them, Wolves still managed to fire off 30 shots (10 on target) and visiting goalkeeper O’Neill was a busy man all night, working particularly hard to thwart Jota.

“We showed we are ready but not as sharp and accurate as we should be.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Wolves XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Boly, Coady, Bennett; Jonny (Vinagre 64′), Neves (Jiménez 58′), Moutinho, Dendoncker, Traoré; Jota, Gibbs-White (Saïss 85′).

I'm really starting to like the idea of Jorginho as a 4th mid. Got 96 points last year with 2 goals but hoping he can up that this yet with penalties and playing further up the pitch.

Frees money and allows me Wilson, Vardy, Salah, Sterling and four premium defenders.

    Anyone thinking the same?

Sure, but he's only 5.0 and at that price, what else is there? If he plays regularly he's an OK pick. If he has penalties then even better.

Norwood probably a more interesting proposition at 5m. If he starts, 5m no doubt OK value, but I'd want a starter to be scoring 130 minimum

Norwood is a lot deeper than people think and new signings so maybe not even on corners now... Certainly not on pens

He didn’t really do anything at Napoli apart from the very odd goal and assist. Doubt there is anything in the further upfield argument.

I had him in for a long time but now I have Zaha and Andone up top as I didn't like any 7m forwards, at the start anyway. Got King. Would have got Zaha as a 7m forward, so bonus they moved him back and strange decision.

I've posted this a few times, but will say again, cheap gks much much less fixture dependent. He will get nearly as many points from saves as he will from clean sheets. So could easily miss out on 6-7 points over season.

    Anyone starting with Moura?

I think I will give him a chance and then swap for Gross, Zaha, Mili or Chelsea mid in GW 3 when Son is back.

Think I might, which goes against everything I believe in for a GW 1 team...

Like you say, plenty of options to switch to in or around that price point. Could add Martial to that list as well, he always tempts me!

Love him*. As the season goes on he should get more nailed, would give him a couple games after returning to make sure he pushes Willian out / is fully fit.

      *May contain heavy bias.

Winger, top 6 team, hugely talented, attack minded, exciting....

Exact sort of player I love to own, and only 6m!

Obviously there's some downsides with him given his inexperience, risk of rotation etc etc but might chose to ignore that 😉

Taking some risks but heres my team

    Ederson

    TAA Stones Robertson

    Salah Westwood Norwood Moutinho Sterling

    Kane King

Had to fill in two 5.5 mids & one 5m mid & the 3 i chose are on set-pieces for their respective clubs

    1. jay01
      • 9 Years

too many risks imo.. stones isn't nailed and you already have ederson.. i'd look to get downgrade him to a 4.5 so you can improve a midfielder (as well as/or one of TAA or Robbo to VVD and use the 0.5 for your mid)

      1. SH1M1

true true putting all my eggs in liverpool & city defence, thing is im not so sure about the other defenders in the league, suppose i could get Digne/Coleman, I originally had a team with Siggy & Maddison but the Liverpool full backs was too tempting

true you can have that approach its just that stones isn't nailed especially when the CL comes around.. i'd go with coleman. as for your mids i think you can downgrade one of those 5.5's to jorginho (see post on top of this page to why) if youre going down that route as i feel he will match those guys. that gives you 0.5 to upgrade the other 5.5

As 5.5 mids I prefer Trezeguet (Villa) and Robinson (SHU). But I wouldn't recommend going for two of them. I'd downgrade Ederson and upgrade one of those mids tbh.

Trezeguet is on my watchlist same with Hernandez from Norwich, Ceballos is a decent 5.5 mid option but he's 5.5 for a reason looking at his stats & yeah i suppose Goalkeepers even them selves out with save points

Think it’s Markus with the counter intuitive stats that show poor fixtures are not especially relevant for 4.5 keepers in general once you factor in save points

      1. Yes

      2. Hmm, some say yes but I would want to see how United's defence cope in the PL first, so I wouldn't start with him. The 2 matches he misses are irrelevant - he'd prob get 1 point each match if he played.

I really like the balance of this team, but wondering where people see any weaknesses, what ya think?:

    Lloris / (4.0)
    Azpi / Walker / VVD / Coleman (4.0)
    Salah / Erikson / B Silva / Siggy (Dendoncker)
    Lacazette / King (Greenwood)

      1. PrestigeWorldwidewidewide..…

yup, main captain Salah, I am comfortable captaining either of those two as alternatives when the need arises. Bad idea?

Otherwise I can rework my midfield a bit and get Kane / Auba up top as a more reliable captain choice

        1. pingissimus
          • 5 Years
          4 years, 9 months ago

Not a bad idea imo. I’m pondering whether Laca would work in 2 - currently have Auba but unsure if he’s worth the 1.5 more.

Have a strong preference for a premium up top but that’s very much against the grain here.

No Agüero or Sterling is dangerous, B.Silva doesn't cover City attack.
Laca was frustrating to own last season - Arsenal is a huge no go area for me.
Eriksen could be a nice differential though, Azpi also a great pick with nice fixtures after GW1.

Looking at it more closely would much much prefer Perez Wilson over Bilva King.

King is imo a dicey choice unless you hold midterm for pens. Bilva is still really all potential still as an FPL asset.

Perez/Tielemans look terrific value as long term holds

      1. PrestigeWorldwidewidewide..…
        • 4 Years

I've had a few versions with Perez/Tielemans that allows me to get Kane / Auba but it throws off the balance a bit when I do that, tough call

I am on King based on fixtures, seems the best option at the 6.5 bracket for forwards

        1. pingissimus
          • 5 Years

Thing with King based simply on last season he didn’t perform according to fixtures. He was value from pens and when Wilson was out - otherwise he was very marginal. The mix could of course change this time - something slightly surreal about how Fraser Wilson cleaned up.
