Pro Pundits

Learning from a disastrous start to the FPL season

“Failure is rich in learning opportunities for a simple reason: in many of its guises, it represents a violation of expectation. It is showing us that the world is in some sense different from the way we imagined it to be.” – Matthew Syed, Black Box Thinking

It feels a bit paradoxical to be writing this under the guise of a Pro Pundit. I’m currently sat at 1,675, 335 in the world, the lowest rank I have ever had in my 13 seasons of playing.

I certainly don’t feel like a ‘Pro’ at this point in time.

I’m being burned my poor decisions, bad planning and over-complicating Fantasy Premier League as I chase shadows and try to claw my way up the ladder.

In some ways, my poor season helps me write these articles. It would be difficult to write a series on learning from mistakes if I was sat snugly in the top 10k after all.

The blinking red light sat atop my black box is a constant reminder that I need to learn from my errors and start to do things differently.

But first, I need to address the fundamental mistakes that I’ve made to get me to this point.

The wheels came off my season in Gameweek 5, and I haven’t been able to get them back on.

This was the week I left Teemu Pukki (£6.9m) on the bench when he hauled against Man City. I instead played Jack O’Connell (£4.5m) at home to Southampton.

It’s easy to look back and say, “well that was a bad decision” – but let’s consider why exactly it was such a bad move.

Okay, I felt like Sheffield United had a decent chance of a clean sheet.  I was hopeful of six to nine points for O’Connell.

But.

Pukki was playing Man City, who had just lost Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m) to a nasty injury. Norwich were scoring goals for fun and Pukki was in great form. His ownership was at around 40%.

As a forward, it’s hard to put an upper limit on their potential, but really, I should have put his ceiling in the double digits with all the factors considered. Essentially, I risked a defender (historically low-ceiling) over an in-form striker, up against a makeshift defence (high-ceiling). I tried to be too clever, and it failed miserably.

Lessons: Consider the ceiling of players before making a decision, defenders are likely to score fewer points than forwards. Don’t bench in-form forwards. Use information from team camps to aid decisions.

This is basic stuff, Az.

I did not make enough changes on my Wildcard – while Aubameyang failed to deliver

From Gameweek 5 I struggled to stop the rot, so in Gameweek 8 I played the Wildcard to try and get ahead of the curve.

A few weeks before, I had belittled Joe for taking all of the “wild” out of a Wildcard. Perhaps this influenced my thinking. I made a number of bad decisions here, of which I am now paying the price.

In total, I made six changes on my wildcard, with only three players from the team that lined up in Gameweek 7 leaving my team. Straight away, this seems questionable. I obviously had faith in the core players in my team, so why did I Wildcard?

The main reason was for a switch in formation. Strikers were performing well, and I moved on Pierre-Emeric Aubameyang (£11.1m). I can’t beat myself up over the choice of striker, he had scored points in every game up until this point. Arsenal were ticking over in the league (although they did look a bit suspect). However, the manner in which I got him raised a few eyebrows.

Gone was Mohamed Salah (£12.4m), leaving me with no Liverpool attackers. My reasoning was they were about to hit a tricky run of fixtures and I wasn’t going to captain their assets.

However, I had said a few days before that Manchester City and Liverpool were leagues apart of other teams in the division. Going with no Reds attackers has left we incredibly stressed watching their matches. Normally a sign there’s something not quite right with how your team is set up.

On the flip side, I’ve felt stressed watching Arsenal play because I know, for my team, the pressure is on Aubameyang to deliver. The chances of the Gabonese international blanking while Liverpool overcame their ‘tricky’ run was not set in stone. It wasn’t worth the risk. Relying on Liverpool assets to blank and Arsenal attackers to haul, in light of both last season and this season, isn’t logical. It was a poor move – perhaps justifiable if I had the faith to captain Aubameyang during his easier games – but I didn’t.

Even with Aubameyang scoring in every game leading up to my ownership, I still didn’t even consider him for the armband. This should have been a warning.

Lessons learned: Teams like Liverpool and City need to be considered differently to others in the league. Their players don’t have “bad” fixtures. Liverpool attackers in particular are assured of starts, return almost every week, and a loss or a blank would be a major shock. For other teams, it is expected. Think twice before selling players from these sides.

With that said, at least there was some method in the madness. But with my other two major decisions on the wildcard, I am really struggling to see the logic.

Out went Kevin de Bruyne (£10.1m) despite being given information that he was only going to miss one Gameweek. I took a punt on Riyad Mahrez (£8.4m) thinking Bernardo Silva (£7.9m) would get a ban and he’d represent good value for money. What a short-term move. I’d always want de Bruyne back. Effectively I sold the best performing player in the game for a one week “punt” on someone who isn’t even first choice.

Lessons learned: Consider the long-term potential of transfers. Don’t give yourself a transfer to make down the line if you can afford it. Avoid players who aren’t first choice when everyone is fit. There’s a reason they aren’t playing.

I was recently priced out of being able to sign Vardy

And then comes my biggest regret of the season. One of the other reasons for the Wildcard was to get ahead of the curve with Leicester. In came the top-scoring defender in the game at the time, Ricardo Pereria (£6.1m), after a check of his stats vs. Ben Chilwell (£5.5m) and I made sure to leave £2.0m in the bank to do Pukki to Jamie Vardy (£9.2m) after Pukki’s appealing fixture at home to Villa (which they lost 5-1).

I am a firm believer in banking a transfer after a Wildcard. In my view, your team should be set up for at least a few weeks, and only injuries and/or suspensions should influence your decisions.

But, once again, I was blighted by short-term potential. Pukki had Villa at home, Vardy had Liverpool away. I was fearful of a Pukki haul. I decided that I would give Pukki the home game and then move on Vardy.

Both players blanked. Not a disaster. But then Vardy went up in price unexpectedly and I was priced out of the move. I was left with £2.0m in the bank, an out of form Pukki, and my plan to get Vardy went up in smoke.

I was left ruing my decision to go for a £4.5m midfielder (Bukayo Saka) over a £4.3m or £4.4m option who would have given me a bit of leeway in case of any fluctuations in the market.

I think this is a good opportunity to consider, what do you think a free transfer is worth? If I had gone with Vardy straight away, and Pukki had got 10 points – I would have been annoyed that Gameweek.

But then, I would have gone into the next Gameweek with two free transfers, the striker I wanted in the long run, and a way of correcting any potential Mahrez / KDB or Aubameyang / Salah or Mané regret. I personally think this is worth 10 points.

Instead, I moved Pukki on for a player I didn’t really want in Callum Wilson (£8.0m), who went on to blank against Norwich and Watford. Vardy, meanwhile, averaged 15 points in the next two games. A painful lesson.

Lessons learned: Don’t give yourself transfers to make. Allow yourself room for flexibility. If taking punts, have a way out. Don’t dig yourself into a corner. Back the players you want, don’t buy players you don’t have faith in.

I sold Mount for Hudson-Odoi ahead of Gameweek 10

And now we are approaching Gameweek 11 and it doesn’t look like I’ve learned from these mistakes. Last week, I let go of Mason Mount (£6.9m), one of my only decent players (points-wise) for yet another punt… Callum Hudson-Odoi (£6.0m).

While this move was necessary to correct my Mahrez mistake, I do now wonder if I have made the error of buying in a player very at risk of rotation, at the expense of someone in form, in the same team, who has his position locked down.

It will be a painful reminder once again if I have to sheepishly buy Mount back at £0.4m more than I paid for him. However, I’m going to stand by this decision this time.

Hudson-Odoi had, arguably, been Chelsea’s best attacker over the previous few weeks. Christian Pulisic (£7.1m) was out of favour. No one could have predicted he’d get a hat-trick (and Willian (£7.0m) would score too!).

If Hudson-Odoi does end up on the bench in the foreseeable future, I do believe this is just one of those things that happens – rather than being a particularly bad decision. Time will tell if I regret it, I’m sticking with him for now.

Buying Hudson-Odoi will unlikely be picked up by the Black Box if it fails… but selling Mount… well, I can already feel myself writing this up with a sense of bitterness.

But that’s enough self-reflection. Onwards we go as we catapult towards Gameweek 11. My team is not how I want it, I’m worried about not owning numerous, in form, highly owned players and equally not confident about my own misfiring boys. Another hit has already been taken to bring in Vardy for Wilson, to correct the biggest regret of my FPL career to date.

Trying to plan ahead, I’ve toyed with the idea of selling Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) next week for Sadio Mané (£11.9m) as City’s fixtures turn. Having written this article, I’m feeling much less inclined to make this move. Hey, maybe these articles are helpful after all…

Here is how I currently plan to line-up in Gameweek 11

Lessons learned from Gameweek 10

Nice read. Similar season. Brought in Aguero, Wilson, and Auba the exact weeks all start blanking. Finally on WC, Sometimes you need a second opinion. I’m 2,5mil, weeping myself to sleep each night and need something drastic that gives me opportunity to climb to 100k+

    Gazza
    Rob--TAA-Mendy-Alonso
    Martial-MANÈ-Dilva-KDB-Pulisic
    Vardy
    Bench: Lys-Lundy-Connolly 0,2 itb

It’s either that or go the more common, with sterling and cheap defenders and Some 5-6million mid and better bench (jimi and similar)
Figure Liverpool’s 8/10 goals conceded will be bettered by a large marginal until January.
Pulisic unsure punt, but as I said, need Drastic. Appreciated you made it through this long post.

As AZ says, mids and attackers have the higher ceiling. Wouldnt play 4 defenders.
          Wouldnt go without sterling.
          Wouldnt get pulisic.
I like gazza but its a transfer waiting to happen

Auba options as I see it:
    1) remove this week
    2) hold until GW17

I feel like he could quite easily blank in the next two...

I've had him for his 3 blanks and there's no way I'm removing him this week. Wolves have injury problems and Arsenal need a win from anywhere.

Makes it slightly easier that Vardy has a difficult fixture too.

To summarize two points I made on the last page into one:

The market isn't being pushed by casuals this season. It simply isn't

I"m not sure if this is due to the availability of free information on social media and via many other sources, or if the casuals simply checked out as early as GW5 this season (VVD's ownership and price should have dropped considerably in a casual-driven market)

Why is this important? If you're booking a future transfer, be ready to spend 0.3M more (and lose value on the asset you're planning to sell) because the mindset that has you wanting to make the switch is actually more likely to affect the market than a casual mindset

The casuals are smarter thanks to the proliferation of information. Even the FPL show or scout articles give decent advice these days, not to mention the twitter gurus.

      That probably explains why.

I'm at 142K. My fair rank is 47K. I've benched all of Lund's hauls and started him for blanks, vice capped Salah when KDB VC won out in hindsight, capped Sterling and Salah through blanks, gotten Tammy when he stopped hauling, only capped Pukki for his GW4 blank vs West Ham (right between two hauls), capped Wilson in GW9, etc

You're coming from a lazy, annoying generalization of "hits reduce your OR!" and judging my strategy I had planned since the end of last season based on this. A strategy that has been used successfully by some others in the past, and one which involved a lot of research and activity on my part

I bring in players with good stats and fixtures but much earlier than you would (without fear of hits) while selling players who I feel will not do well or have gone off the boil/become rotation risks out of the blue... Or are injured/suspended. These have worked out for me sometimes, but not always. And I've been hurt by many forms of bad luck in the game, such as benched hauls (when my XI had good fixtures) or right captain before deadline => wrong captain in hindsight: a constant worry this season

So I'm not some lucky chap sitting in top 1K talking about my glory days

I disagree. You may be referring to red flags, for which the algorithm has been tweaked this season. Everything else is the same: the net change in ownership leads to price changes. It's the changes in ownership themselves that have stopped being casual. You can check a few popular and unpopular players for evidence on this

    Vardy, Jimi, Maupay

Bench : Button, Lundy, Cantw, Webster
    6.4 ITB

    Kneejerked into Matip's knee jerk!
Original plan was to do Digne + C.Wilson ➡ Matip + Lacazette

    Pope Heaton
    Diop Lascelles Matip*
    KdB Salah D.Silva Mount
    C.Wilson* Rashford Vardy
    Tomori Soyuncu Stephens

    0 FT, 1.3 ITB

Have exact money for C.Wilson to Lacazette.

Should I take the hit or too jerky again?

I think ride it out mate, one mistake done, no need for another punt to turn sour. best to save , watch and make a decision end of gw11. Lacaz could easily blank or not start aswell , so best to stick for now

My biggest mistake was the GW3 switch of Moura and Barkley to Martial and Ceballos.

Should have just got Mount in, but had to downgrade to afford Martial. Obviously a terrible decision in hindsight, at the time seemed sensible though. Ceballos looked great, Arsenal looked strong and Martial OOP at 7.6m.

      GW 3 I did Barkley + VvD > Soyuncu + Martial.

Wish I'd just did a straight swap to Mount. But that move to Soyuncu gave me 4 of the template TAA, Soy, Lundy, Rico by GW 3 so set me on a really good path.

Taking hits...I have avoided these all season so far.

Besides injuries and fielding 11, any rules of thumb you go by when taking a -4/-8?

I could see saving 2 fts and having a 3 transfer week to adjust a team being as a reason, or to get in a captainable option...but interested to hear why folks take them and when to absolutely avoid them.

I've made 17 transfers this season and I'm at 142K. With hindsight, I'd make almost all of those moves again as patience with my team in any of the past GWs would not have outscored my current team with hits and a used wildcard. Long term plans with an eagerness to modify strategies in a rapidly dynamic season

Maybe it's because I'm new here and can take the season from a different perspective to the tried and tested rule of patience. Just to be clear, I'm not the type of person to sell Sterling because he'd been blanking, but I sold Pukki. None of my moves was casual, just less patient. If I see a move gaining points over the next 4 to 6 GWs, I'll make it now with a hit. One other thing I ensure is that my hits always involve a better team overall, not just one better player than another and then buffered by downgrades elsewhere

Just don't start overtinkering. May have worked nicely so far and your team value is extremely good, but with that approach you could easily hop on a derailed wagon.

I'd say Janmaat feels like a really value chasing punt that I don't like for instance.

I got Janmaat BEFORE he was a known pick. Checked his stats, heatmaps, and defensive improvements in GWs 8 and 9 of his team, as well as QSF's defensive reputation and Janmaat's nailedness under him. This made him stand out to me, not just the 9 and 12 points. Also, I got him to be on my bench on most games, but easily rotating in whenever Rico/Lund have bench-worthy fixtures (check out their rotation)

I'm watching Trossard until GW15 for a similar move

If you're taking a hit & captaining that player, a -4 would suffice.
If you have an out of form player and/or an injured player you just want out, a - 8 would be considered fine.
      I have never taken a - 12, so I don't know!

    4. Bushman

I like hits and find they make the game more fun. If I take a hit, it's either to downgrade one player to upgrade another; or to restructure my team if I have a run of poor gameweeks. I tend to do play an early wildcard each year and then take a -8/-12 to fix that wildcard around Oct/Nov. For example, I took a -8 this week after getting 2x 30 something weeks on the bounce. I thought my -8 would take 2 weeks to pay dividends but I got lucky this week. My 3 transfers were Pukki, Salah and Mahrez to Vardy, DSilva and Mane. Had I asked for opinions on here before making those transfers, I imagine most would have said no but I benefited 17 points after hits and a better team going forward. Therefore there is a time and a place for hits imo but don't be too trigger happy as they rarely pay off over 1 week.

I am almost happy with my team, getting there and changes going to be made to my team. Want to keep my midfield, go defence heavy plus keep Vardy, Tammy, TAA and Pope as well.

Players with stars to be moved starting GW11.

    Pope Button*
    TAA Lund Rico Aurier* Dunk*
    Salah Mane Dilva Perez Mount
    Vardy Tammy Jimenez*

Had a decent GW10. This week was McGinn to Perez FT. I am really thinking of at least a -4 at the moment but just trying to hold tight and see what happens over the weekend.

    @AZ

    Little bit harsh on yourself.
Imo getting Wilson for those 2 fixtures, while he got attacking points in each game till then, wasnt a bad pick. Bou playing 2x 0-0 vs two of the worst defences is just unlucky.

On the other hand the stats of Vardy werent too great either. On paper more difficult fixtures. And his hattrick was more due to the awful game of Sou then anything else. It was a pl record, so not something that would happen every week.

Yeah, I'm not too mad about Wilson - cant help if he fails to deliver against the worst two defences in the league.
But I wasn't a big fan of Bournemouth anyway with their new system and Vardy was the one I planned for - so it always felt like the wrong move.

While we're talking regrets, I don't have many from my WC two weeks ago, like Wilson has been horrible but there was sound logic in picking him. Hi Az. The difference between you getting shut of your only Liverpool asset in Salah isn't the same as getting rid of Sterling with you owning KDB. It could well be a good move. I'm sure many can relate to a few of your moves. I transferred Auba in GW 6 and captained him 4 times out of the 5. Though expected much better than just 2 goals and a booking 🙂

I'm still intrigued how Arsenal are going to respond with everything that's going on. He won't be my captain against Wolves with Liverpool and City having better options.... but i'm holding my patience with him. My stubbornness to not do a straight swap for Vardy could prove to be foolish mind
