Pro Pundits

How I’ve improved my FPL rank after a slow start

Az discusses his rise up the Fantasy Premier League ranks in his latest Pro Pundits article

My ascent up the rankings continues. After being down in the depths of the two million mark in Gameweek 11, six out of seven green arrows has seen me move into a more respectable position of 372,885th at the time of writing. The gloom of the start to my season has been lifted and I can look forward to the second half of the campaign with some cautious optimism.

The Black Box has been gathering dust over this period, as I haven’t needed to reflect on any mistakes and learn from them. Instead, I enter strange territory where I can actually look back over the last few months and think about what went right for a change.

Vardy and captaincy

This isn’t particularly insightful but I have to mention the current highest-scoring player in the game and the impact he’s had on my season. Going into Gameweek 12, I had a successful captain return in five out of 11 Gameweeks (a 45% success rate). Then Jamie Vardy (£10.1m) came in. Since then, I’ve captained Vardy for point hauls of 12, 12, 5 and 5, and my captain has returned in all but two Gameweeks (71% success rate). Vardy has also been my highest-scoring player in three of these Gameweeks.

Having a consistent player like Vardy, to many, can seem quite boring. But ultimately, I find that the captaincy is the single most difficult decision we face each week. Even when presented with an ‘easy’ game for certain key assets (like Sadio Mané (£12.2m) versus Brighton in Gameweek 14, or Raheem Sterling (£11.8m) versus Southampton in Gameweek 11) there is always the risk that players will blank.

However, Vardy’s record since Gameweek 9 is unbelievable: 12 goals, not a single blank and four double-digit returns. As others have looked to be clever and go for more leftfield options, sticking the captaincy on Vardy has led to consistent returns in an area which I have struggled with. His effective ownership might be high each week but you are still making up ground if you captain him and he returns. Slow and steady has been the key to my rise.

Ings

Ings continues scoring run as Shelvey nets third goal in three

Let me tell you a story about Danny Ings (£6.5m). Last year, I bought him into my team around Christmas time. I had a strike force of Ings, Isaac Success (£5.8m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) and to be honest, I was looking for trouble.

The three were appalling for me, as players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m), Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.7m) hoovered up the points. I’ll always remember listening to the Soccer Saturday commentary in one particular game, as Ings was through on goal, only to miss the target and then be taken off with an injury. His price, around £5.0m at the time, meant it was really difficult for me to move him on, and I had fires all over my squad. This meant that Ings stayed in my team for weeks despite his red flag. It was a nightmare.

This year, however, he’s more than made up for it. When Tammy Abraham (£7.9m) picked up an injury, I thought it may be a chance to take a punt on Danny again. But I did not expect him to get five goals in as many games and be second to only Vardy in the goalscoring charts at the time of writing.

I’ve always felt that injuries to a player such as Abraham present a great opportunity to move ahead of people who are slower to react. While my decision to remove Kevin De Bruyne (£10.4m) earlier in the season was a misfire, I stuck to this strategy, and I’m glad that I went for Ings. Equally, I’m sure that those that moved for Jiménez will be delighted with his goal and three assists over the same period. Those that held on to Abraham however, will be disappointed that they didn’t roll the dice.

Avoiding Pulisic

Pulisic benched as Lampard switches to a 3-4-3 against unchanged Spurs

One area that I was determined not to get dragged in to was entering into the lottery of Chelsea’s midfield rotation. Of course, I didn’t expect six gameweeks of blanks for Christian Pulisic (£7.2m), but I did fear that he may be at risk of rotation due to the number of players that are vying for starting spots and any potential unsettling of the team that may be caused by Lampard’s tinkering.

Instead I went for James Maddison (£7.8m), and while he has now left my team, his returns have been excellent for me – despite occupying a much deeper position than I was happy with.

As we enter the Christmas period, rotation is expected – but giving yourself a headache of a player like Mason Mount (£6.5m) or Pulisic, where you are fearing their name not being on the teamsheet every time you check the line-ups, does not seem sensible to me. Yes, Pulisic has only missed one game over quite a long period, but now Chelsea have put in one of their best performances of the season against Spurs, you have to feel like his spot is less secure.

As some advice, consider who in your team is droppable and consider moving them on. I’d be a worried owner of players like Anthony Martial (£7.7m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.6m) or even Brighton star Neal Maupay (£5.8m), who may be pushed out to the wing or even dropped over the Christmas break.

My plans going forward

But that’s enough reflection. I now need to think about how to capitalise on my good run. We have several new managers in the league and I’m looking to see if there are any “bounces” I can exploit.

Watford put in a great performance against Manchester United and the training videos that have Pearson encouraging quick passing and explosive running make me think that players like Troy Deeney (£6.2m), Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m) or Ismaïla Sarr (£6.2m) could start to pick up points with good fixtures ahead.

I’m also an admirer of Carlo Ancelotti. I think his appointment is great news for Everton and it’s the defence I am particularly interested in. Lucas Digne (£5.7m) has dropped in price and I think he will continue to be heavily involved in Everton’s attacks, with his chances of clean sheets surely increasing. Other players like Yerry Mina (£5.3m) and Richarlison (£7.9m) could benefit from the new manager – and even options like Moise Kean (£6.4m) could also potentially come into reckoning.

Arsenal, under Arteta, I am much less confident about. I think he has inherited a mess, and if he can get them firing, he truly is a miracle worker. There are simply no players other than Aubameyang that I think you can consider for your team at this stage. It will be fascinating to see what he can do with the squad but, in my opinion, it is far too lightweight and weak to compete in the league, or to factor into our squads. Sorry, Arsenal fans!

This will likely be my last article before 2020, so I’d just like to say a big thank you to anyone that has read these and to anyone that has followed me on the Scoutcas, or on my new venture of FPL Top Guns with Luke. I’m having a lot of fun writing and recording things lately, so it’s nice to feel like I’ve got my mojo back, and that hopefully you are enjoying the content.

To everyone on the site, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

when your options for a defender is those two, i would not do b. Doing A is strange

Front 7 could do well and Hanley the only one with a slight tricky fixture, Villa not exactly watertight so you can hope for a goal from a set piece.

I think it might be because later bandwagons tend to be influenced more heavily by active players, whereas earlier bandwagons retain ownership by dead teams. Just a theory anyway.

and i can´t believe you are benching him.. both Maddison and Ings is closer to bench than him. He plays, while Maddy got a tough fixture and Ings, will he start? And if he does, Southampton will have their eyes on next week, Palace game is more important.

Saints can´t defend wide areas, Pulisic will play in wide areas. Mccarthy can´t save. Pulisic will score or assist.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

Why would lamps drop any of the spurs team though? And especially for Pulisic who contributed 0G 0A in 7 starts prior to his benching? A run through which Chelsea lost 5, and drew 1 winning only 1 of those 7 games?

Ings & Maddison are 110% nailed on to start (if fit), Maddison set piece monopoly, Ings is southampton’s Attacking funnel through which everything must go and he’s on pens

The only reason I’m not selling Pulisic is that it would cost 4 points and I can’t really justify benching any of that XI^^

(Cue Pulisic hattrick v Southampton obviously 🙂 )

Well, then we disagree on certain circumstances that tbf we really don´t know. Maddy is what you say 110% sure starter, Ings is not a sure starter when you consider Haseenhuttl comments and the fact that this game is 2 days before Palace, a game that is a 6 pointer. I might be wrong, but if Ings starts today Hassenhuttl is risking it high upon his own position, doubt that and he has shown that he does this tweaks before (last year)
Chelsea were in a tough run and Pulisic not to blame for that, and that 3-4-3 was a tactical tweak to manage and diminish the strength of Mourinho´s set up, which worked. He might play that formation again but i doubt it home to Saints.

It’ll be interesting to see how they lineup alright

And that could be a good prediction with Ings being benched/saved for today in order to be fresh for Palace

Maybe Ings bench, Pulisic start is the way to go

Just to make it clear, it is just an impression i got from Hassenhuttl PC, so just speculation fro my side. And Lamps can be a bit unorthodox in his team sheets, so while i think he puts it back to a 4-2-3-1 in order to crowd the midfield that´s just my guess and i´m not a manager at high level-)

GL for the week, hope your decisions comes fall in your favor

Ota should start if you own, much higher ceiling than Kelly, if he starts. Palace-West ham sounds like a boring game, but london derby and it usually high scoring and both defenses are not that great-) I know Palace have gotten many cs but wheni watch them they seem close to concede, vs Brighton they could have been down 0-3 in first half.

i would start by D, and then try to break it down which of the 3 you´d bench. TAA is hard to bench and you did keep him over the blank, but even so i would not feel compelled to play only for that reason. I´m playing aurier, lundstram and kelly above Gomez, but
i would play TAA over Kelly. Soy is no, that´s yellow and conceding so might end up with 0

Can someone please explain why everyone loves Alli so much for this GW?
Myself I am thinking of swapping Alli for Salah. But it means getting rid of either Trent Alexander-Arnold or Rashford....

. Without Son there will be extra burden on Alli to score goals and i can see spurs bouncing back straight away. (They scored 14 goals in 5 pl games prior to chelsea clash with Alli being their most inform player

yeh, but those were with Son, now they are without. Not only do they lose a creative force but also a winger which creates more space for others as he stretches the opponents defense line. Brighton are not tight away so if the game falls in spurs favor it could be ugly.My bet is that it won´t and they will struggle.

First twenty minutes will be important. Spurs became so frustrated at their own ineptitude last week, they lost all composure and judgment. Vertonghen, Sissoko, Gazzaniga and Alli especially, stopped thinking about the football and seemed more intent on petty fouling. They were encouraged by the one-eyed ref. Worth remembering that they only won at Wolves against the run of play. Spurs have good fixtures, but by no means certain to dominate.

Don’t think so unless you’re really wanting a differential value

That differential will disappear very soon and Mane has matched (in fact bettered) Mo for a year now. Note how he had one chalked off and was rested in the other game when Mo hit.

Both good options of course but very sideways move

after playing on low intensity for two games while the others (Leic in particular) played two high intensity games? Long travel is a factor, mind

It´s a little uncertain in midfield, Hendo will play, then i think it will be Milner and Keita, but that´s because i think Wini is saved a bit longer after his knee complaint vs Watford. I hope i´m wrong though as i like Wijnaldum in these top matches as he is so functional, both in defense and attack. Milner is ageing and while his tactical quality is still there he can struggle vs the movements of Maddison and Tielemans.

I think Klopp does a tiny tweak, and that is Firmino. When defending he will be more like a 10, chasing and obstructing the likes of Tielemans and Maddison, minimalizing their creativity.

Ahh i see. Went for the safe option.

          Could be a good prediction

After watching KDB vs Arsenal & Leciester he was majestic in both - how he didn’t haul vs Lecieste rill never know... so hoping Pep keeps him where he is

Coming the other direction - Wolves are playing their 32nd game of the season, for what is ultimately quite a small squad - there’ll be a lot of tired legs out there - legs that may struggle to keep up with the city tiki-taka

They’re also missing Wily Boly, and they laboured against both Spurs and Norwich last week...

Salah is the alternative and is captainable in any fixture he’s that good, but I’m just not sure the travel is he best prep and not sure leciester will concede more than 1 or 2

Mo earmarked for captain in 20 & 21 so he will almost certainly be rested and get a 1 pointer from the bench in one of those two fixtures 🙂

Imagine Wolves then playing just 44 hours later at Anfield-) And 3 wolwes players are on 4 yellows, Jonny, Neves and Moutinho. Jonny is a sound albeit boring left back and Vinaigre is not quite up there (he might opt for Traore rightwingback and Doherty left) and those two in the middle will be a huge loss, will be interesting anyway

Can’t decide my defence WC structure from gw20 onwards

    1) Which gk?
    A: Ryan/Button....8.8m
    - currently on this
    - can get cheaper defensive cover of Webster at 4.4

    B: Guaita/Button....9m
    - Seems pricey to pay more for a palace defender
    - small chance of getting dropped
    - can get cheap defensive cover from ward/Kelly at 4.4m

    C: Ramsdale/McCarthy..8.9m
    - definitely the best fixtures
    - but have owned Rico @4m so does it make sense to double up
    - could sell Rico for Webster if I go with this option

    1. pingissimus
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 4 months ago

C - Would you ever play Rico? Surely he’s fodder only. But Bournemouth don’t do fixture runs - that’s generally when they’re at their worst!!!

B - Kelly and Ward combined (started the season with both for this reason) guarantee a cheap Palace defender - bold call now I suppose to get Ward.

A - this is my current option. Pooh poohed it at seasons start but Ryan has been really good. Save points make him better than defender.

C: Actually yes might play rico often especially given lundy's couple of tough fixtures
B: agreed...might just get kelly instead and switch to ward later on
A: Agreed, thats what i am on too atm

The Rico rule states you never play him but keep him first bench at all times - fighting chance of a return rather than a guaranteed 1 pointer that way
