My favourite teams to target for upcoming FPL Blank and Double Gameweeks

Fantasy Premier League managers can finally start pinpointing which teams to target for the Blank and Double Gameweeks.

That’s what I have spent the last day or so doing as we head into the busiest period of the football calendar.

The first thought that comes to me while looking at the fixtures is that the teams involved in Double Gameweek 19 will have plenty of motivation to play their best players and not rotate.

In recent years, the biggest Double of the campaign has come when a lot more places in the Premier League table were secure, reducing the importance of each game.

By contrast, very little will be settled come early January and we can surely expect fewer dead rubber games – which is great news for Fantasy managers.

And, handily enough, some of the popular teams with two fixtures in Double Gameweek 19 don’t have a particularly condensed schedule before and afterwards.

Teams with the best Blank and Double Gameweek fixtures

For example, Liverpool play a Premier League game on January 4 before an FA Cup third round tie against Aston Villa on January 8, which they will surely use to rest key players or manage their minutes.

That precedes a lengthy for Liverpool, their next Premier League games coming in that Double Gameweek on a Sunday, January 17 and Thursday, January 21.

After that, the Reds have another FA Cup tie (if they go through) before their next league game on January 28.

You have to assume that, because of the cup ties and reasonable rest times between league outings, Liverpool rotation will be at a minimum for the games that matter to Fantasy managers.

Thankfully, Jurgen Klopp’s men have good fixtures in and around the Double Gameweek too. In fact, the Reds are second on the Season Ticker from now until Gameweek 17, so it looks like a good time to invest in key Liverpool assets if you are planning to Free Hit in Blank Gameweek 18 and build a team for Double Gameweek 19 without a Wildcard.

Manchester United are in a similar category as Liverpool for me with decent Double Gameweek 19 fixtures on paper as well as an appealing schedule either side.

West Ham and Leeds also have really favourable fixtures in the bumper Gameweek.

Not only do they have a decent schedule before and after, these are two clubs that can offer decent budget options if you are looking to plan for a Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 19.

Both teams are fixture-less in Blank Gameweek 18 so if you do want to get Hammers and Whites in your team, you may be lighter that week and increase the need for a Free Hit chip.

What if I don’t want to use my Wildcard?

Kane and Son deliver again as Spurs prepare for appealing fixture swing

If you are hoping to navigate Double Gameweek 19 team without using a Wildcard, the teams we have already mentioned remain good sources for transfers but we should also consider Chelsea, Leicester and Southampton.

That said, those three clubs have mixed schedules before then, although they improve from Gameweek 20 onwards, so timing could be very important when transferring their players in.

When we are planning for the Blank and Double Gameweeks, we always have to make sure we do check the fixtures before and after so we don’t succumb to tunnel vision and fall into some traps.

It is worth noting Spurs have a good run of fixtures right until Double Gameweek 19 and do not blank in Blank Gameweek 18 either.

If you currently own five or so players from Manchester City, Spurs, Aston Villa and Everton, which is very likely given the template and some popular picks, I think you can get away with saving the Free Hit in Blank Gameweek 18 and using it in when the FA Cup quarter-finals cause problems or for a Double Gameweek.

General tips for Blank and Double Gameweeks

Finally, here are some of my golden rules for planning to cope with Blank and Double Gameweeks.

  1. Don’t have a tunnel vision when choosing Double Gameweek players. Don’t just think about those who are playing twice – always look for those with appealing single Gameweek matches too.
  2. If you can field a decent Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 19 (which is possible with good bench fodder from Southampton, West Ham and Leeds United), use the chip. I have found that if you are building a team with your second Wildcard, it is much more effective when you don’t have to focus on the bench and can pump more into a strong set of 12 to 13 starting players.
  3. Don’t forget to get points now. More often than not, while we are focused on getting good players who play two games in the Double Gameweek, we tend to forget teams that have good fixtures right now. There are still five Gameweeks to be played before Double Gameweek 19 and while you make your transfers, make sure they have a good points potential for now as well. A good example of this from last year was when everyone was focusing on Liverpool players with a Double Gameweek. But, at that point, Manchester City were away at Aston Villa, which was a very appealing fixture at the time. I deviated from the Double Gameweek bandwagon and focused my transfer on getting points immediately: signing Sergio Aguero (£10.3m) and captaining his hat-trick.

That’s it from me at the moment. At the moment, this article is merely me loud-thinking while I glance at the fixture schedule first up. I need to delve further before I strengthen my plans for these Gameweeks.

I am expecting some old school ‘pen and paper’ transfer planning as I move ahead. I suggest you do the same. These scribbles always help. Good luck and see you next week.

Lessons learned from FPL Gameweek 13

      Don't think so.

      Not for me.
There's little benefit to WCing in GW19, as you can't use any other chips like BB.
Still working out the optimum strategy, and with 10 teams on DGW, there's loads of choice for triple captain.

GW19 is probably the biggest, but yes there may be a DGW or so more.

Yes, triple captain is likely to be used later imo.
Depends if the season is wrapped up by then, and how rotation plays out.

Wanna specify how to build up towards GW18?
I am currently tending towards free hit in GW18, then manual transfers (-4) in GW19 with BB.

Yeah, did the same myself, gone the season without him so far but can't go any longer without him and I don't think Leicester will fare too well in their next batch of fixtures for the most part being against teams that will need to be broken down

Don't worry guys, I've figured out Arsenal's transfer plans up until the start of the 2023/24 season. Turns out they only need 2 big signings to get back into the Champs League! Let me know where the weakest points are, besides the dreamland I'm in regarding the specific transfers! 😀

    * = Something that’s changed
    [] = New signing

Starting XI, formation, bench and reserves are just simplifications. Things can move around a bit. And it gets a bit complicated towards the end. I'm no expert on the academy, so it would be nice to know your thoughts on that if you have any. Ultimately, it's just a bit of fun that took me too much time, but at least I don't own Football Manager, or my life would be over.

"Release" = Contract ends, released from contract or sold.

You can if they're good enough.

The 2023 team ages in September are:

        28
        22, 22, 24, 26
        25, 30, 23
        22, 22 22

So I presume you would say Arsenal should hang on to Auba for longer or replace him with a forward/striker in his prime? Likewise hold on to Mari and Holding for another season or two?

Ohyeah. The two transfers only comment is tongue-in-cheek. Just trying to demonstrate the talent at the club. Don't want to stifle the youth, something that Arsenal actually has strength in compared to many clubs. A couple of other strong signings for balance could be enough.

Well I’ve had him for 3 weeks, has got me 4, 3, and 0 points. But him getting benched yesterday has me wondering if I should keep him for one more week with him more likely to start.

I mean, 4 points is pretty impressive for a midfielder with no attacking returns. It's not about the points he got you in the past, it's about the future. I don't see why you're sell him for a 4 and 3 pointer unless you thought he played poorly without much chance of getting points, orif you thought he's be dropped, or if you had an alternative, clear better plan. I presume you had someone to come in off the bench for him this week, so it's not a 0 in his place. You knew when you bought him you'd need that, I presume. I would continue with him until you have an alternative that you prefer. He should get lots of minutes in over Christmas, you'd think.

I appreciate your reply Deulo. I did have Welbeck come off the bench for Mahrez, albeit 2 points lol. But yes I was prepared for benching. Although no one can predict how it might happen. The 2 mentioned players came in on a failed -8 two weeks ago so I’m stuck figuring out who to make a balanced move with 2FTs.

Trying to work out best strategy for weeks 18/19 having already used WC. I already have 8 players below for week 18 and 5 double week players (Salah Bruno Chilwell James, Bamford). I think best option is to use transfers from now to get 11 for week 18 with good fixtures after week 19 and FH in 19. Does this seem right play?

    Matches to be rescheduled:

    Aston Villa v Newcastle
    Burnley v Man Utd
    Man City v Aston Villa

Depending on when these are played TC Bruno or TC KdB good be tempting. Having Avl defenders and Martinez/Grealish for BB is also an option, so there could be reason to save BB gw19.

I am saying that since I don't have my first WC left, I will bench boost later. BB gw19 means using a lot of transfers and forces to play FH gw18. I will gamble with the hope that gw18 will be quite low scoring and I'll get decent starting XI for gw19 and enough players for gw18. (this is what I'm thinking atm, a lot or work to do still)

I was gonna BB in GW19 but I've decided for it to be worth it I'd need to WC in 17 or lose Son, take hits every week and ruin my team before and after so going to save it instead.

Is it worth it going KDB--> Salah and Reguilon -->Dier? Need to pull the trigger tonight otherwise will be priced out

Or would it be worth to drop Kane for Brewster and downgrade Reguilon to get Salah as a 5th mid?

Totally depends on your own team what strat to deploy in 18/19. Having looked at it properly now:
    - Currently I have 4 players in 18
    - Currently I have 7 players with doubles in 19

Clear strat for me is build my team for 19, im going to keep Son and Kane so thats 9 players. I guess I want a further 2 with doubles so probably DCL>Adams and Grealish>Bruno. And keep my WC

I havent started thinking about bench boost yet, but I think I would have enough FTs to even build my bench for BB in 19, but not sure yet.

Yes I agreed. I've got 6 for the blank and 5 doubles. Not ideal

GW16 is coincidentally a great time to lose Grealish also which is handy

Does anyone play fanteam on here?

Presumably the best strategy if you still have your WC is to dead end your team into blank GW18 and then use your first WC for the GW19 double and if you don't have the 1st WC, just build to the GW19 double making sure you can field 6 or 7 in the blank GW?

Seems to be a huge advantage if you have the first WC still

    Salah | KDB | Fernandes | Son | Grealish
    DCL | Bamford

    Forster | Kilman | Mitchell | Brewster

What should I do, Kilman and Mitchell seem obvious trades but is there a worthwhile alternative?

Don't think there is at that price, will need to free up some funds.

    I already own Son.

    For blank GW18, I have
    1GK, 0def, 4mid, 2 fwd

    For DGW19, I have
    0GK, 5def, 1 mid, 1fwd with double fixtures

    Any thoughts on chip strategy?

I don't really like the idea of doing loads and loads of free def transfers to set myself up.

Since this is the case I would get few more with fixture gw18 and gtg. FH gw 19 since you have so few heavy hitter with dgw. I have only 4 players who play gw18 so Im using FH then

Any Liverpool fans have thoughts on Curtis Jones’ future?

4.4mil, has played 90 the last 3 games. Unlikely to get in on the action but for bench fodder he looks he decent option.

    Chilwell > James
    Welbeck > Kane
    Mahrez > Jones

    Thoughts ?

Transfer one Chelski defender out for another make probably not so much sense. I would bring Kane in because good fixtrues will coming (Fulham, Leeds, Aston Villa and Sheffield).

    Mccarthy
    Lamptey Dias Chilwell (Creswell Mitchell)
    KDB Grealish Bruno Mahrez (Bissouma)
    Kane Bamford DCL

    a) Mahrez Kane > Salah Wilson/Watkins for free
    b) Kane Bissouma Chilwell > Salah Dallas/Targett Brewster for 4pt hit— would mean 3-5-2 with a mid of KDB Mahrez Grealish Bruno Salah lol

my head says a) but mahrez rest means hell surely start right? would hate to transfer him out before a haul

What to do with this horror show?

    Mc.Carthy (Steer)
    Zouma, James, Coufal (Ayling) (Lewis)
de Bruyne, Fernandes, Son, Grealish (Bissouma)
    Vardy, Wilson, Calvert-Lewin

1 free transfer, 0.5 in the bank and still the first wildcard.

    Thank you!

I knew I had the bench all wrong this week....played the Vestergaard and JWP over Coufal and Hendrick. Dias over Watkins too...we'll see if that hurts me some more. 15-20 pts. left in the breeze.

I have missed a few Dallas CS...but I rarely have all three of my outfield subs scored pts in a given GW. I never would have started Hendrick...he's my fodder but I actually chose to not start Watkins and Coufal because I felt Southampton would exploit all the Arsenal injuries (Partey, Xhaka, Bellerin out). Some times it's better not to think too much.
