How Everton’s improved defence has damaged Calvert-Lewin’s supply lines

Leicester 0-2 Everton

  • Goals: Richarlison (£7.8m), Mason Holgate (£4.8m)
  • Assists: Alex Iwobi (£5.9m), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m)
  • Bonus points: Holgate x3, Richarlison x2, Wilfried Ndidi x1 (£4.8m)

YOU’LL JUST HAVE TO FORCE YOURSELF GODFREY, THIS IS WAR

Carlo Ancelotti has finally solved his full-back crisis and managed to improve Everton’s defensive potential at the same time.

Without Lucas Digne (£6.1m), Seamus Coleman (£4.8m) and Fabian Delph (£4.9m) due to injury, the Toffees boss admittedly took some time to find a viable alternative, finally stumbling across it against Chelsea – and deploying it to good effect on Wednesday too.

In Everton’s last two matches, Ancelotti has used centre-backs on the left and right of a four-man defence, namely Ben Godfrey (£5.0m) and Mason Holgate (£4.8m) respectively.

The end result has been a sudden leap in clean sheet potential. They have two shutouts from a possible two since the switch, more than the Toffees managed in their first 11 matches of the campaign.

That is, of course, an achievement made all the more impressive by the calibre of opposition in that time, Chelsea and Leicester both watching their recent run of hot attacking form halted by Everton.

With Arsenal (home) and Sheffield United (away) up next for the Toffees, anyone interested in a quick defensive return could find it on the blue half of Merseyside.

That said, Fantasy managers should take care before jumping on Robin Olsen (£4.5m), who came in for Jordan Pickford (£4.9m) for only his second start of the season at Leicester.

It appears that Ancelotti has not dropped his English shot-stopper, taking the opportunity of a tight turnaround to allow Olsen some minutes, rather than seriously challenge for the number one jersey.

“It’s a normal rotation. I want to give Robin (Olsen) opportunities to be involved in the squad. I have confidence in both of them – Jordan is doing really well in this moment.” – Carlo Ancelotti

Meanwhile, Everton could potentially suffer in the absence of defensive midfielder Allan (£5.3m) who sustained a hamstring injury in the first half at Leicester, which could rule him out of more games than usual during this busy time of the year.

WHAT’S CALVERT-LEWSIN?

Meanwhile, Everton’s recent improvements at the back do appear to have negatively impacted on Dominic Calvert-Lewin‘s (£7.9m) Fantasy potential.

He is now two games without a Premier League goal, his longest dry run of the campaign thus far, although he has contributed two Fantasy assists in that time. And, were it not for an incredible save from Kasper Schmeichel (£5.5m) on Wednesday night, he might well have found the net at the King Power Stadium.

That said, it is still worth highlighting a slight regression in Calvert-Lewin’s service in this new-look Everton side, with much less prowess in wide areas.

Any team that replaces marauding full-backs with centre-halves is going to have less joy on the flanks going forward, as we have seen for the Toffees recently.

James Rodríguez (£7.7m) has also been a sore miss, especially considering how erratic Alex Iwobi‘s (£5.9m) crossing has been while deputising on the right-hand flank of the front-three.

While the quality of opposition over the last two matches could also be a factor in Calvert-Lewin’s form, it is worth remembering that Everton remain inside the bottom three on the Season Ticker for attacking potential between now and Double Gameweek 19.

VARD LUCK

It was another disappointing result for Leicester at the King Power Stadium, who have lost more games and conceded more goals than they have won or scored themselves this season.

It only serves to reinforce the existing trend regarding Jamie Vardy‘s (£10.3m) form this season, with just 28 of his 89 FPL points (31.4%) coming in home matches so far.

Vardy owners would be wise to retain some faith in the Leicester forward though, not least because three of the Foxes’ next four matches are on the road, where 61 of his points have come in 2020/21 (68.5%).

But the veteran centre-forward was also somewhat unfortunate to blank against Everton, certainly a lot more involved in making things happen than earlier in the campaign when he was almost entirely reliant on penalties.

Vardy set up James Maddison (£7.1m) for a shot from range in the sixth minute and half-way through the opening period, James Justin (£4.9m) managed to get the better of Godfrey and put a cross on a plate for Vardy – whose effort was caught by Olsen.

Leicester were then awarded a penalty in the second half, which Vardy would, naturally, have taken, only to see VAR chalk it off, before Ayoze Pérez (£6.0m) was adjudged to be offside when turning the number nine’s knock-down header into the net from a corner.

Leicester City XI (4-2-3-1): Schmeichel; Fuchs, Ndidi, Fofana, Justin; N Mendy (Iheanacho 73′), Tielemans; H Barnes, Maddison, Ünder (Pérez 62′); Vardy.

Everton XI (4-3-3): Olsen; Godfrey, Keane, Mina, Holgate; Doucouré, Allan (A Gomes 41′), Sigurdsson; Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin (Gordon 90′), Iwobi.

I'm taking out KdB for Salah this week. He's the one player that you worry about not owning. I'm keeping Kane though. If you have Son you could ditch one of the two perhaps.

What's the set-piece situation at Liverpool now? TAA/Robertson splitting corners and TAA on dfk's is it?

One thing that I think might be overlooked here, is that DGW19 teams seem to be stuffing in as many DGW players as they can but not the top guys.

Liverpool have BUR as part of theirs. United have ful as part of theirs. If I were building a FH side, I'd likely go for:

Robbo, Salah, Mane would be ideal from Liverpool.
United I'd get Fernandes, Rashford, Maguire.

Unlikely you can get them all, but it bears thinking about. FH 19 allows you to take some expensive guys like Mane and Vardy that some other teams might have as lower grade options like Soucek to enable a full team of doublers whereas you are beefing up that first XI with low owned big hitters.

I wonder if DGW19 will have a top score from a BB or a FH...

A well formed BB team should win out over a FH team. It's just a case of how many people can actually build a top BB side with 5 transfers and being careful not to lose players who will score well between now and then too.

It's an absolute minefield this DGW 🙁

Whoever has their first WC + all chips is in a massively advantageous position right now

              I dunno about that.

It's still GW16 that they'd have to move. That is annoying because it's not close enough to the double to micromanage it. You still want Son + Kane and that means that you are at least 2 players short of a full BB squad I don't envy the GW16 first wildcarders. It's a hard balance to get right.

You can't be suggesting that NOT having a WC is advantageous?

I would murder this DGW with a WC beforehand

It's obviously advantageous. But does it outweigh the early wildcard and the team value you'd have gained instead?

I'd say FH 19 should comfortably win over a BB side, especially those teams who have already used the first WC. However, I can not confidently say if that is the best timing to use the FH chip.

This is what I've been thinking. My team's quite well set for the blank already (2 villa, 3 city, kane and lamptey)

I've been playing around with a route to BB in GW19 but even with hits the team doesn't look great. I think I'm much better off building to a decent team for GW18 and free hitting in GW19. City and palace's fixtures after 19 after great, villas, Everton's and spurs' are a mixed bag but good enough to not massively compromise the team going forward after 19 IMO

That's like asking who are you gonna captain in 17? What's the point? We'll decide when the time comes.

Strategy for 18 and 19 is important, but it's important because it affects the decisions you make now.

If I don't have to decide now, I'm not gonna waste my time thinking about it. I don't care to decide now who my captain will be in 18 or 19. I'll decide that when it comes time. That includes two slots in my eventual GW19 BB team which if things go to plan will be KdB + Davis > XX + XX. I don't need to know right now who those guys are. I'll pick the two best when the time comes.

Yes I will remove regardless. I need money to fund Davis replacement.

So the option is KdB vs CRY and Davis blank vs two players with 4 total fixtures. There's no contest.

You know, I'm not fully sold on the BB 19 just yet. I still have two weeks to really decide if I wanna make the move. It's GW16 that I'd have to commit to it one way or another. But I think I'm leaning towards BB right now.

DCL + Grealish are nice to remove in 16 for Ings and Soucek. DCL plays City, Grealish has che mun TOT coming up. Good time to move them on in the short term yet alone planning for the 19 BB.

Looks like FH18, BB19 for me!

I can buy Bruno or Son in my next transfer(s).

Which is best in view of Xmas, DGW's, fixtures etc?

          Own Salah, KDB & Kane

This can be my bb team for gw19 with a few hits along the way

Keeps kdb and son who have great single games in 19. Won't need to wildcard in 20

Does it look acceptable  - and something to aim towards? Fulham attacker not ideal.....Thanks

          Meslier johnstone
          Chilwell James dallas kwp coufal
          Salah kdb Bruno son soucek

            SALAH son BRUNO grealish
            BAMFORD VARDY ADAMS

This is why i have a problem with the bench boost without wildcard. It just looks like we're shoehorning dgw players in regardless of if they'll score points or not. And the other side is you'd have to waste ur second wildcard to get a good bench boost. So my thinking is might as well wait for later doubles especially if you're taking hits here.

I don't think I'll need to lose the wildcard in gw20 with my squad above

Accept that decordova Reid is a massive weak point- but the others seems reasonable options.

I am have 2 Leeds, 2 chelsea and shortly 2 West ham....plus salah bruno.... its achiebaeithout destroying the rest of the squad

                It's fine.

2fts to bring the West ham boys in this week.

                2fts gw16 to get son

                A hit in gw17 and 1 or 2 hits gw19 sort it

Selling Vardy for Kane this week, but a bit worried that Chilwell or James will be rested for Chelsea next game and my sub defenders are Kilman and Mitchell.

Should I go -4 to bring in a sub defender just in case?

          (Steer, Brewster, Mitchell*, Douglas*)

I am planning Mitchell* -> Taylor to improve bench and save 0.1. Right to go Taylor over Ayling/Alioski? Was looking at Alioski at 4.4 but little concerned with Leeds defence and him getting hooked off at HT against West Ham. Haven't really considered the BGW/DGW yet.

          Hi guys.
I'm a real newbie when it comes to this format of fantasy football. I'm looking for suggestions and potential transfers to improve my team.

          Currently 1.7 ITB
          Currently 2 free transfers.
No WC, FH or BB left.

          Leno
          Justin, Chillwell, Gabriel, Walker
          KDB, Son, Zaha
          Che Adams, Vardy, Watkins
( McCarthy, Barners, Mitchell Jota) are my subs.

Any help is honestly really appreciated
