Calvert-Lewin offsets longest goalless streak with another Fantasy assist

EVERTON 2-1 ARSENAL

  • Goals: Yerry Mina (£5.5m) | Nicolas Pépé (£7.6m)
  • Own goals: Rob Holding (£4.4m)
  • Assists: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m), Gylfi Sigurdsson (£6.8m) | Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.6m)
  • Bonus points: Mina x3, Sigurdsson x2, Maitland-Niles x1

NUMBER NINE

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m) continues to divide Fantasy Premier League opinion with his latest Gameweek score below six points

It was the third match in a row that Everton’s centre-forward failed to find the net, his longest goal drought of the season so far.

But Calvert-Lewin does remain blankless in that time, assisting in every match from Gameweek 12 onwards. Each of them has been a Fantasy assist, the first a foul for a penalty, then a shot scored on the rebound and, against Arsenal, he forced Rob Holding‘s (£4.4m) own goal.

How strong Calvert-Lewin’s Fantasy credentials are right now, perhaps depends on what his owners are looking to get out of him. If steady returns work for you, then he is certainly delivering solid, if not spectacular, appeal.

However, one thing is for certain: Calvert-Lewin is offering less objective value compared to earlier in the campaign, slipping below Callum Wilson (£6.6m) and Patrick Bamford (£6.3m) for points per million spent after 14 Gameweeks (or 13 in the case of the Leeds forward).

We recently highlighted that Everton’s improved defensive ability, achieved by deploying centre-backs as full-backs, had damaged Calvert-Lewin’s supply lines and the same seemed to be true against Arsenal.

Chances were few and far between for the striker on Saturday who, up against Arsenal’s back-three, was tasked with more of the dirty work than usual, holding the ball up and pressing from the front to protect his team-mates.

Obviously, it has to be pointed out that the last three matches have pitted Everton against ‘bigger’ opposition (it is hard to use the term “better” when referring to Arsenal these days).

While that could be considered mitigating circumstances, they are circumstances that could continue throughout the winter period with Manchester City (home), Wolves (away), Aston Villa (away) and Leicester (home) four of Everton’s next six opponents.

GYLFI PLEASURES

It is also no surprise that Calvert-Lewin’s recent dip in value has coincided with James Rodríguez‘s (£7.7m) absence from the Everton team.

Unsurprisingly, Alex Iwobi (£5.9m) has not been able to replicate the Colombian’s early-season form in his last three outings on the right-hand side of the Toffees’ attack.

However, it is worth pointing out that Gylfi Sigurdsson (£6.8m) has taken on some responsibility for getting the team going from central areas.

Ancelotti has mostly favoured 4-3-3 this season, a system that does not typically get the best out of the Icelandic international, who is most comfortable as a number 10.

The Everton manager switched to 4-2-3-1 for the Arsenal game, with Tom Davies (£5.2m) deputising for the injured Allan (£5.3m) and André Gomes (£5.4m) in a deeper role next to Abdoulaye. That allowed Sigurdsson to have a more advanced role in central areas, finishing top for key passes among Everton players.

“(Gomes) had a problem in training. It is not possible to train. Because we have a lot of games, we don’t want to take a risk. I think he will be available for Chelsea on (Boxing Day).” – Carlo Ancelotti

Crucially, his role in penalties means he has registered a goal involvement in each of his last two Premier League home games (one goal, one assist), as many as in his previous 17 at Goodison Park.

GO ON MASON

Everton’s defensive improvements with centre-backs at full-back continued against Arsenal, despite giving up a first-half penalty.

Over the last three matches, the Toffees are still yet to concede from open play, particularly encouraging as they prepare to face the Premier League’s second-lowest scorers Sheffield United on Boxing Day.

However, it is still worth pointing out the complications with signing Everton defenders.

While Mason Holgate (£4.8m) and Ben Godfrey (£5.0m), in particular, have done well in wide areas, the return to full fitness of Seamus Coleman (£4.8m) is a factor worth monitoring.

Meanwhile, the goalkeeper position remains uncertain too, Jordan Pickford (£4.8m) coming back in for Robin Olsen (£4.5m), under Ancelotti’s pretence of this being “normal rotation” for this time of year.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s own goal-scoring problems persisted at Goodison Park. They have not scored from open play in any of their last five Premier League away games, with their two goals on the road since Alexandre Lacazette’s (£8.2m) strike against Liverpool coming from the penalty spot.

Could that bode well for Brighton, the next side to host the Gunners? They were without Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m) on Saturday, who missed out with a tight calf.

“(Aubameyang) has got a small muscle injury so he will be out for a few days I think. I don’t know (if he’ll be fit for the next match). We’ll have to assess him again.” – Mikel Arteta

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Godfrey, Keane, Mina, Holgate; T Davies, Doucouré; Richarlison (Kenny 90+2′), Sigurdsson, Iwobi (Coleman 83′); Calvert-Lewin (Tosun 90+3′).

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Leno; Tierney, D Luiz, Holding; Saka, Elneny (Willock 64′), Ceballos, Maitland-Niles; Willian, Nketiah (Lacazette 76′), Pépé (Martinelli 71′).

    Good afternoon guys,

    Really need your help here...

    Current team:

    Martinez (4M)

    Chilwell - Lamptey - Taylor - Dallas - Targett

    Salah - KDB - Bruno - Zaha - Anguissa

    Kane - Bamford - Watkins

2 FTs and 0.8 itb... What moves would you make?

    A. Zaha + Lamptey ---> Lookman/Raphinha + TAA/Robertson

    B. Zaha + Watkins ---> Son + Brewster (Would have to play a 4-4-2)

Any suggestions? Currently leaning A due to fixtures

You'd have Dier as the FH reverts back to the team of the previous GW. So the transfer Dier to Coufal never happened.

Though all FTs will be reset to one FT (even if you went into FH with 2FT)

I've narrowed down my DGW strategy into two core options.

Both FH 18 but GW19 is a TC vs a BB.

    Team A (TC)

    Fabianski
    Robertson Zouma Coufal
Salah (TC) KdB Fernandes Son Raphinha
    Bamford Adams

    Team B (BB)

    McCarthy
    Zouma James Coufal
    Salah (C) KdB Fernandes Son
    Bamford Adams Giroud
    (Martinez Balbuena Dallas Raphinha)

Next week I will have to decide which of the two team directions I will take. Team B also requires a hit in GW19.

Basically, does Martinez, Balbuena, Dallas, Raphinha outscore Salah (c) +4.

I can't see past a GW18 FH with my team. Because I have no City defenders I can't build a team in GW18 that has enough players (can't even get 8).

This is a mistake imo because one hurts the other. If you have a lot of players for GW18, then you have no DGW guys in 19. If you have lots of DGW guys for 19 you have no guys in 18.

The 19 guys are so far looking better. Salah, Fernandes, Bamford, Chelsea defense etc. Those are core guys in the team.

You don't want to split the difference here. You pick one and go all-in on it imo. Either build a GW18 team and FH19 or build a 19 team and FH 18. It's very clear to me and I'm really struggling to see good arguments to the contrary.

The good argument to the contrary is that there will be other blanks and doubles that any chips used here won’t be available for. You will be in the exact same position as people not freehitting in gwk18 in a later gameweek. Maybe in a worse position as you’ll probably have less gameweeks and free transfers to plan. It’s not so cut and dry that chip usage is more beneficial here than later in the season.

I did that last year. I saved my wildcard and bench boost until right at the end intending to combine them. It didn't work out like that. There wasn't a perfect alignment of weeks. I wanted to Wildcard earlier because my team was falling apart, but I still had BB so I picked up 2 playing GKs.

In the end, I BB'ed in GW38 for like 12 points and came 2nd in my ML by 2.

Point is, waiting for a perfect moment that might never come is far riskier imo. It's actually safer to attack the known than to wait for the unknown. Worst case scenario, I take a few hits later on to fix some mistakes. At least with these chips now, I know exactly how I will get value out of them.

                    Agree.
In some of my leagues it was also impossible to make up the deficit although I had a chip advantage at the end.
Sometimes it is easier to defend a lead than to chase.

I'm leaning towards BB as a BB is trickier to set up (playing secondary GK) and this DGW does seem to have a lot more spread out interesting double fixtures. TC is much easier to trigger, only need one team and player.

James might be out for a longer while if he does get the operation.

Yeah you're right about James. He's just an additional -4 if need be. I'm not averse to taking a -8 in GW19 if it means I can field a pretty much full power BB lineup organically.

I think most bench boosts outscore most triple captains most seasons. So I don’t think you can base your decision on that. You need to base it on bench boost now versus later, free hit now versus later and triple captain now versus later.

This is something we can't weigh now unfortunately. We don't know what the future DGWs will be. TC is fairly easy to deploy. Just wait for Fernandes to get his DGW with Burnley away and tada. BB requires setting up. But you can also argue that you can set it up with a wildcard later for say GW37.

I dunno, I need to pick a direction though. It will be one or the other.

I agree. Too many unknowns. Just like how many points are lost/gained during the transition periods, especially for bench boost are difficult to calculate. My point stands though that a TC doesn’t need to outscore a BB to be the right move. Fwiw I think your bench outscores Salah easily in gwk19.

      Team B imo.

I'm playing these gws with a straight bat and taking the points that are on the table; FH18, BB19 and with that I'll get 12 and 29 players out those weeks. (Inc. Cap)

I'll worry if it was the right call later.

What makes me reconsider is my team is so set up for gw19.

So Fh 18 would be ideal, but realistically what score could I expect from a Fh gw 18? 50/60/70/80? But with a Fh gw later in the season this could easily be 80/90/100+

        1. Camzy

FH18 is ideal because think about it this way.

If you don't FH18 you could get like 20-30 points. Others that FH 18 with some picks like Wilson and Sterling can get 60+ in the right conditions.

If you FH later in the season, you could get 100 points but your normal team would probably get around 80 in that case.

FH in blank gameweeks is playing the odds. You get players vs no players. That is guaranteed value. Sometimes, I've seen FH teams lose to normal teams. Last year, that happened to me.

I FH vs just played my usual team, and I only gained I think 9 points total. Maybe it was a poor use of the chip, but while you have players playing even if they have a single gameweek, things can happen. If you have no players playing you're guaranteed to score 0 therefore your FH will always have value.

It doesn't matter what you might get later, too hard to measure.

But the better set up you are for 19; the worse you are presently for 18.

So by going all in on 19, you are going to yield a lot of extra points from FH.

Yes. Because he has good fixture in 19 and beyond. And a player in hand is worth more because of stored value and the transfer/opportunity cost of removing them. I'll think about it though.

Maybe there is some upside in KdB + DCL > Vardy + Bowen for instance.

Don't think Giroud will play both games. Maybe get Antonio if fit by then.

Yeah that is a cheap forward slot. Can be Antonio, Haller, Giroud, even Chris Wood or Mitrovic...

I currently have 2 free transfers for GW15. If I only use one, will I have 2 again next game week? For GW 16?

Happy Grealish got those assists, but I'm eyeing

    A) Grealish/James -> Soucek / Robertson
    B) Wait, and do James -> Dallas instead for now

Going to wait with KDB. Waiting another GW on Grealish vs CP is tempting, but I'd miss out on possible Robertson haul vs WBA.

I’ve also got my eye on A. Lots of value in Grealish, how we those Pool fixtures look too god to ignore.

Exactly what I’ve done. Grealish is good but robbo’s form is better, grealish may come back after the next 4 fixtures. But Robbo and Soucek are ideal for gw 19

I guess I could also get the funds through DCL -> Adams. Not sure yet if that's worth doing now.

What a roller coaster, I did Chilwell / Vardy to James / Kane which didn´t exactly work out, besides Lilman to Taylor so I was on -8. I was expecting a huge red arrow but... I had Bruno(c), Salah, Grealish, Wilson and it turned out to be a great week with 76 points so far with 3 players to go. 🙂

Wildcarding pre-GW 16 and I have 2 FTs for 15 but nowhere to use them. Crazy to do Bissouma > Anguissa tonight before Anguissa's near rise because I want Zambo in for my WC? I have 12 players with good fixtures that I'm happy to play and might even burn the other FT

        McCarthy (Steer)
        Cancelo Dallas Robertson (KWP Bissouma)
Fernandes Grealish De Bruyne Salah (Bissouma)
        DCL Adams Watkins

As is I'm benching KWP away to fulham. Thought about doing Fernandes + someone > Mane + someone but that seems unnecessarily dangerous and I'd lose some value on Bruno
