Why FPL managers should target teams battling for top four and fighting relegation

With 11 Gameweeks of the Fantasy Premier League season left, it could make sense to target teams battling at the top and the bottom of the league after the disappointment of Double Gameweek 26.

I had really pinned my hopes on an attacking approach paying dividends in Double Gameweek 26, but it all turned out to be a bit… meh.

When we reflect on what’s going on now compared to what we saw at the beginning of the season, it all appears to be heading towards a flatline.

But let’s not lose hope. There are 11 weeks of the season left and while Manchester City look like they’ve all but wrapped up the title, there will be more twists and turns in the battle for the top four and relegation.

Race for the Champions League

 1

There are eight teams (excluding Manchester City) with a shot at the top four this season. Manchester United and Leicester are in pole position, with Chelsea, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham, Liverpool and Aston Villa all hoping they can qualify for the Champions League next season. I’m not counting Arsenal, I think their race is run.

I am half-tempted to exclude Liverpool from this list. They are now seven points behind Chelsea, with absolutely no momentum going forward. The lack of chances they are creating is simply unbelievable and players like Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) look like shadows of their former selves.

I will be selling Salah this week. A tricky game against Wolves is followed by a blank and Jurgen Klopp could shift his priorities to the Champions League, as the race for the top four looks like too high a mountain for the Premier League champions to climb.

The player could have the biggest significance in our FPL seasons is Diogo Jota (£6.6m), who forced a smart save from Alphonse Areola (£4.5m) at the weekend. I fancy Jota to get back up to speed pretty quickly and will likely be used to allow players like Salah and Sadio Mané (£11.8m) to get a bit of rest in-between Champions League matches. He is the Liverpool only player I am tempted by in my Wildcard in either Gameweek 30 or 31.

Leicester have built up an impressive points tally this season but are now hampered with injuries to several key players. I was very tempted to jump aboard the Ricardo Pereira (£5.9m) train, but it seems to still be stuck at the station. Looking at Leicester’s players, there is no one I would consider until James Maddison (£7.2m) returns from injury. If Leicester are going to get into the top four, it will be by crawling over the line rather than by any strong finish, so I’ll be avoiding their players too.

Outside of this, teams like Chelsea, Everton, Spurs and West Ham all have the wind in their sails. Chelsea perhaps look the strongest, but outside of Antonio Rudiger (£4.6m) and the solid if unspectacular pick of Mason Mount (£7.0m), there’s no one else I would consider at this stage due to the huge amount of rotation, although Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.7m) has still started every match of the Thomas Tuchel era at Chelsea.

Encouragingly for Fantasy managers, the other three teams have plenty of players for us to consider. Brave managers may elect to go against the popular Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.8m) with suggestions from Carlo Ancelotti that his position may change to get more out of the supremely talented Richarlison (£7.9). I’m also struggling to think of a better defender out there than Lucas Digne (£6.2m) at the moment, who looks so dangerous every time I see him play.

 1

For Spurs, I couldn’t be happier to see Gareth Bale (£9.4m) back in form. He’s one of my favourite players of all time and he’s showing signs that he’s not just thinking of getting a birdie on hole nine.

The trouble is, his minutes will surely continue to be managed so you’ll likely have to put up with a 60 to 70 minute appearance. He’s been devastating recently even with reduced game-time, but the logical side of my brain is telling me that Son Heung-min (£9.5m) is the better pick as Jose Mourinho continues to work him relentlessly with no sign of a rest in the league. The ownership difference between them is stark, at 5% vs. 55%, and if Bale continues to deliver, acquiring him over Son could be a season-defining move.

Lastly, we have West Ham and Villa. Two teams who, if you had told me would be fighting for a top four spot at this stage of the season, I’d have laughed you out of the building.

Other than Jack Grealish (£7.5m), I find it hard to recommend any Villa attackers for your teams, with Ollie Watkins (£6.6m) surely a contender for the unluckiest player of the season. He’s a great player and a fantastic purchase for Villa, but I’m not sure about him as an FPL option. Especially now the Villains are struggling for goals which I think will ultimately mean they fall short of playing the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich next season. Instead, it’s all about their defence, with Emiliano Martinez (£5.4m) in the running for a spot on my wall of fame next season, and the likes of Matt Target (£5.0m) and Ezri Konsa (£4.6m) offering great value in defence.

West Ham have a frankly unbelievable number of players that wouldn’t look amiss in anyone’s team. Michail Antonio (£6.6m) looks almost unplayable and I quickly remedied my decision to get rid of him last week by bringing him back in immediately. The likes of Jesse Lingard (£6.1m) and Tomas Soucek (£5.3m) are offering great value in an attack that promises goals almost every game and Vladimir Coufal (£4.6m) looks a snip at his price. Aaron Cresswell (£5.8m) is getting a bit pricey now, but if you’ve got him in your team I can’t think of any reason to let the highest-scoring defender in the game go – but I do think if you’re in the market for a defender than Coufal looks perhaps better value for the run-in.

The battle to avoid the drop

It pains me to say this as a Brighton fan, but I think we’re in big trouble.

Fulham have got something about them as they put in consistently impressive performances – and crucially pick up points. Josh Maja (£5.5m) looks a great signing – he has so much energy and if he can start to add a few more goals to his game, should help to propel Fulham up the table. The likes of Ola Aina (£4.5m) and Areola look like solid options too and, against all odds, Scott Parker’s team could be fine this season.

West Brom have been playing better lately, but, like Sheffield United, are too far gone. I think it’s going to be a two-way battle for the third relegation spot – with the Seagulls battling the Magpies to avoid having their wings clipped and a drop down to the Championship.

Looking at the teams, Brighton surely have more than enough to stay up. But the fact is, we just can’t win a game. An impressive victory against Liverpool aside, it is now five games in a row without taking three points, despite some really impressive performances, particularly against Crystal Palace and West Brom, which resulted in no points.

Ryan benched, Maupay not in squad and Trossard up front as Potter

There’s something wrong with us up-front and there has been for two seasons now. Do not invest in our attack, that’s my main message. I’ve had messages from people who are wondering who the best options are, as Brighton have a match in Blank Gameweek 29, but none of them can be trusted.

The only players I’d consider investing in are Joel Veltman (£4.3m) and Lewis Dunk (£4.9m). With Lamptey now ruled out until the end of the season, Veltman could be a steal at his price if Brighton can start to pick up some points. He’s performed well in all the games I’ve seen him play, and I believe he is a much stronger option than the likes of Dan Burn (£4.2m) and Ben White (£4.4m) because of his attacking threat.

Dunk to me is still the standout in our team and probably our main source of goals however odd that sounds. I’m thinking of switching John Stones (£5.3m) for him before Blank Gameweek 29. He’s been a great servant, but with the threat of Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m), long term I now think that Ruben Dias (£6.1m) is the most sensible defender to own.

I’ll keep my piece on Newcastle short. The injuries mean that there is no one in their team that I would consider and while I’m pessimistic about Brighton going forward, I just can’t see how Newcastle are going to score any goals. Joelinton (£5.7m) has to be one of the worst signings in Premier League history and as Jermaine Beckford said last week, “he’s not exactly a player that you can rely on”. Too right. In fact, I’m targetting teams playing Newcastle – both with the hope they’ll lose enough games to keep Brighton safe, but also because their squad is perhaps the weakest in the league, particularly in terms of a lack of any real attacking threat.

Would you make the call to transfer Auba for Salah this week or save the transfer and do it for BGW 29.

Plan to pull the trigger after the EL game.

They clearly meant Mount, or if you need somebody for 29, Grealish.

The point on Grealish still being injured is valid though.

Saka Raphinha and - if you fancy something slightly punty - Lallana

Surprised Az didn't mention him - he's the one piece of real quality in the Brighton attack. Think he has the highest expected GI there if they do over Southampton and Newcastle.

Really really irregular minutes and made of glass

Point was if Brighton get out of it by actually scoring goals I think he's the most likely route imo. From the bits I've seen he's looked ok - just so rarely on the pitch long enough.

Their other route is to keep clean sheets and XGC suggests that is more probable - except for the uncomfortable fact that except for a brief run they haven't been keeping cleanies.

As it is I think they will be okay and definitely hope so. Very irregular Palace fan who has always positively liked Brighton. Could be a narrow squeak but I'm guessing they will be better than Newcastle. But if it comes to the last day - oh dear.

My team with WC and BB left:

    Martinez
    Cancelo Robertson Shaw Coufal Strujic

I never understand the hate Sterling gets. He's absolutely electric on his day. During the World Cup he would get booed in the pubs when his name was read out before the match. Unbelievable.

It's just Sterling's been gradually sliding further & further away from premium output every year for 4 seasons now, whilst his price has been going up & up - which leads to a lot of frustration when he inevitably underperforms vs. people's expectations:

          - Attacking returns: 35 > 32 > 26 > 16
          - Returns per appearance: 1.06 > 0.94 > 0.78 > 0.66
          - XGi: 22.0 > 22.0 > 25.3 > 13.5
          - XGI Per appearance: 0.66 > 0.64 > 0.84 > 0.61

          Like Salah's 300 > 260 > 230 > ??? for 9.5 > 13.0 > 12.5 > 12.0 - it's just not the prettiest FPL picture

Yeah fair enough. From the perspective of the FPL manager, he doesn't justify his price. I always prefer de Bruyne myself just because he is the main man at City and has the set pieces.

If there's one criticism of Sterling for me it is that his finishing can let him down. I also think he can be predictable when he resorts to the cutting-in and shooting tactic even when it isn't working. In general though I am thrilled to have someone as excited as him lining up for England - we should appreciate it as fans - we used to have Owen Hargreaves playing wide left at one point FFS.

Yep Left flank used to be such a problem position - defence and midfield both! Back to the days of trying Beckham, Hagreaves, Scholes etc all out of position - i think it was same with left back for a long time before Ashley Cole too...

I just wonder if the guile & footballing intelligence of Grealish, Maddison, Foden wouldn't be a better platform for Kane than the pace of Sterling, Rashford, Sancho though - particularly for International football, its hard to know

Certainly a lot of extremely talented attacking midfielders there at the minute either way

I had this debate with a friend.

England have a midfield problem. All their talent are wanna-be wide forwards or second strikers. They don't have actual attacking midfielders. The only one is Maddison.

Foden and Grealish used to be, but they're now wide forwards as well. Mount is a very vertical player not particularly suited to no. 8.

Yes. Look at his starts in the league.

He's incredibly wasteful and frustrating to own in fpl but he's one of the first names in the starting eleven for City. He'll get a big haul every once in a while when it all goes his way in a game. I'm hoping its v Southampton

Think holding Digne makes sense - decent in 30/31 and possible DGW.

I could well be losing Gundo this week. Some risk in EO but - waiting on tonight - KdB has stripped him of quasi premium status and he now feels like another value mid. Nice to have but less essential than before.

I'm probably losing for 29 - he has LEI away in 30 so may bring him back on WC in 31 for the Leeds game.

Also gives time to see if KDB will realise his former heights

Looking at GW29, I don't want to lose any City this week, Bruno is a keeper and giving DCL one last chance.

So unless I waste a transfer on a GW29 player (will only have 10 using all my FT) i've got to focus my 2FT this week on Salah and Barnes.

    Basically comes down

    A. Giving Salah one last chance and having less to spend replacing Barnes

    B. Ship both this week and have circa £20m to spend on 2 mids?

    C. Do something sideways like Soucek to Raphina and either play 9 in 29 or take a hit to get 10.

I have the same dilemma. If Bale /Son are rested in Europe I will bring one of them in for Salah, Barnes will become Lingard (probably) or Raphina (not keen on Leeds' form or fixtures). I may just do the Barnes one this week so as not to lose the transfer (I can bench Lingard in wk28)

Maybe Barnes --> Lingard.. But they have ManU next. Other?

      Lingard can't play Utd.

Barnes to Saka? Roll the other and have 2FT and a little more ITB for your GW29 moves

I am doing Barnes to Lingard this week, I can bench Lingard in 28 and you have a strong enough squad to do it as well.

Looking forward to wildcarding in GW30. Will be parting ways with all City players and have Dias only. Too much rotation especially with the Champions League now back on the menu. KDB and Sterling have been poor value all season and lets face it they just havent delivered.

If you are surviving BGW29 without a FH, I would suggest to look at the fixture ticker for GW30 and 31. WHU, Leeds, Spurs and Villa have decent fixtures in GW30 before the fixture turn in GW31. I would suggest WC in 31

Strange statement in the article suggesting Digne is the best defender in the game at the moment and Cresswell being too expensive to bring in (0.4 cheaper than Digne) when he is the highest scoring defender in the game! Cresswell has scored 27 vs Digne 26 since GW24 and Digne has played 2 extra games!

      Half agreed

Think it slightly depends on how you read the Chelsea match - was that Everton reverting to their frankly poor defensive record all season or just a blip against one of the best 3 sides in the country right now?

Both he and Cresswell need cs to maintain value and with failing premiums in attack cost at the back seems notional. Both are on my radar. Cresswell first probably for me.

Creswell have four games in next 4 weeks, but arguably tougher (including MUN, ARS and LEI).

Digne has only three games in next 4 weeks but easier (BUR, CRY and BRI)

On balance, I would still plump for Creswell (and thinking of a Cancelo to Creswell move next week) but you can see why Digne is an attractive option, especially if you plan to FH 29

Own both but if I had to lose one it would be Digne.

I trust West Ham defence more (fixtures are ok in terms of clean sheet potential imo) and Cresswell is on almost all set pieces has while Digne has to share with Siggy/Rodriguez.

      Not much in it though.

I have the same opinion as this. I have both defenders but rate Cresswell as a better FPL pick than Digne.

Yeah fair enough. I actually submitted this just before the games on Monday and tbh it couldn't have gone worse really for that statement, with Digne getting a booking and Creswell getting assist and max BPS.

I just really like watching Digne, especially when he gets the odd game at WB (or even LW although that seems to be unlikely now). Creswell is a huge threat from set pieces of course, but I still think Coufal offers great "value" - but of course if money is no object, I'd go for Creswell over him.

Going forward though, Digne is my defender of choice.

If you were to pick a WHU that offers great 'value' then surely Dawson is the player to pick.

So what to do here ? Did bruno>Son last week in prep for gw 29 (that went well). Should I do salah>Bruno or focus on bringin gw 29 players.

    Johnstone
    Cancelo Dias Cresswell
    Gundogan Salah Son Raphinha
    DCL Bamford Kane (C)

    Mccarthy Grealish Lowton Ayling

    A. Salah>Bruno
    B. Salah>Bale
    C. Mccarthy>Martinez
    D. Lowton>Targett
    E. Save ft and have 2 ft for gw 29

If Bale only gets limited minutes midweek then I'd get him in. Don't think Bruno against WH is any better a fixture and Bale gets 2 good ones in 29 and 30.

He has transformed Spurs attack and Mou clearly values him now - his comments couldn't be more positive really.

Some argument for Villa defence - 2 good fixtures in 28 and 30 but likely dead letters in 29.

Oh if you have WC in your pocket then the triple up has so much upside especially looking ahead to 30. Newcastle Burnley and Palace have a lot in common.

Wrinkle is this: possible Spurs DGW in 32, blank in 33 and then two of the best attacking fixtures going in 34 and 35. That's going to be a puzzle for WC31 people. Easier to handle if we know about DGW of course.

yeah i'm just tired of planning to much, these weeks that has gone by I have planned and planned without any good results so I will stop trying. Kane will probably stay in my team for the rest off the season and if bale is really back he will probably end this season well to so both will be included in wc 31

Coming up to one of those crossroads-type gameweeks

    A. Punt on: Werner (lee), Zaha (WBA), Vardy (SHU) with Vardy captain
    B. Go Template: Kane (ars), Bale (ars), Bamford (CHE) with Bruno captain

Both options are using 2 FT/no hits - and likely Free Hitting in GW29 either way. Going template is just so boring

Why FH'ing in GW29 - most on here seem to think that it's better saved for GW29 on the grounds that GW33 should offer a better relative upside (Spurs/City blank) and most should have the key players for GW29 anyway.
Personally I'm on the fence, as Ihave only 6 players for gw

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

No interest in FH33 at all to be honest - I want to be divesting from Man City now, the clean sheets have gone, and the attacking rotation will get worse, plus 2 blanks, no doubles & 3 cup competitions in the last 10 GW's, plan on only having 1 or 2 city who can go to the bench and Kane + one of Son/Bale who can also be benched

A single Brighton cleansheet in GW29 can be massive with triple defence, plus can get Auba, Kane, Bale, Son in attack etc - lots of upside there i reckon

        1. Pompel
          • 10 Years
          3 years, 2 months ago

I will also be offloading one or two City assets, but will keep Dias and possibly Gündo. But benching Kane+Son/Bale in GW33 is a lot of money on bench. And it's a good opportunity to triple up on Liverpool against Newcastle (hoping they've found back to some form by then).

Everyone will have Kane + Son/Bale, but I agree that a Brighton clean sheet and Auba (if he plays) are good differential opportunities

      2. pingissimus
        • 5 Years

Posted this a couple of times and this will be the last!

I for one can see a potential upside team to FH in 29. Very few are on Brighton and Fulham defence and most are on Leeds attack. This is an opportunity to bring players who very few non FH teams will have more than one or two of and are given fixtures dangerous to include as FTs.

It may not happen this way of course but doubling Brighton and Fulham defence could get you a major swing. On form alone there's reason to believe that one or both could get a cs.

This is my posited FH29 team

        Areola
        Andersen Dunk Dallas Cresswell Veltman
        Bale Son Lingard/Saka/Auba
        Kane Antonio

If you switch Antonio to Bamford it covers almost all the bases but still leaves you with a decent potential swing from defence. Play Antonio and you are at risk from Bamford EO but Fulham have been averaging one or fewer a game for months now so the damage is likely minimal given he's not a C option.

Benefit of this FH team is allows you to ignore 28 and bring in Chelsea defence perhaps now for 28 and 30

Good point about bringing in Chelsea defender for this gw, but aren't they subject to rotation risk? Thing about your team is that apart from possible Brighton and Fulham clean sheet's (30-40% chance each I'd guess), the players you list will be in most peoples team expect Auba, who has low ownership. I'd wager upside is even bigger in GW33, targetting LIV-new, LEI-cry and AVL-wba
BTW, think you should have Targett/Konsa in there for one of Veltman/Dunk

          1. pingissimus
            • 5 Years
            3 years, 2 months ago

There is of course lots of potential upside in 33. It's a way off though and right now Liverpool and Leicester seem less than sure things even with those fixtures. WBA Villa is one of those awkward derbies - not a fixture I'd put much weight in. Villa and Martinez defo got away with one last week.

My guess is that lots will be divesting City between now and then and so more teams will be able to get out a viable eleven than this time.

In ideal world 33 perhaps better but can see team set ups where 29 makes sense too. That's all I'm saying.

Defensive transfer this week for me to lose the last of the Burnley 3 - who proved a decent investment in 24 on. Which to go for?

A Azpi (who's clearly due a rest and Stones possibly dodgy too nowadays)
    B Digne (no 29 but good in 28, 30 and 31)
    C Cresswell
    D Rudiger

Not too too concerned by 29 as I already have 9 in place but triple Villa is clearly sub optimal

    Martinez

    Shaw Stones Konsa Lowton*
    Bruno Son Gundo
    Kane Watkins Antonio

    Ederson Raph Dallas Lingard

Anyone else struggling to find Salah replacements?

I don't love the form, and would sell if there was someone I liked.. but is Bale too risky? Aubameyang likely to start, or get rested for Europe? Lingard maybe but he blanks against United.

Who are you going for? Really can't decide myself what to do, so the default is just to hold.

Depends how many FT's and how many players for 29 I suppose.
I will have 11 for 29 and bought Lingard for Bruno last week with 29 in mind.
Might take 1 wk punt on Mount vs lee. He looked very good in the couple of mins he played.
Bale the obvious choice I reckon.
      Auba the long shot.

My team so far for 29:

      Martinez/Nipples
      Dunk Konsa Ayling
      Son Bale/Auba SaRaphina Lingard
      Kane Watkins Bamford

I just have lingering doubts over Bale starting all the time. Though if he was nailed I guess he's the pick.. tripling with Kane and Son though?

Great team. I'm also considering Lingard next week, would be in for Gundogan (or Salah).

Alternatively Reguilon for a City defender (maybe) next week..

I'm gonna bring in Auba and Bale (Salah and Raz out) for GW29. I looked at taking a hit to add Pepe until I realised I'd have 5 mids, 3 strikers and one defender for GW29. So I'll settle for starting 9 and hope for a lack of clean sheets that week.

Big moves! Auba and Bale look to be the differential flair kind of picks that not everyone will have, unless they both explode this week. Nice way to get ahead if they perform. Arguably not too much downside as many won't have 11?

I'm struggling for replacements too with a current midfield of Gundo, Fernandes, Son, Raphinha.

Considering some 2 week punts like Lallana, Pepe, Trossard type of players. It's a small pool that plays 28 and 29. And Brighton have the motivation and the fixtures.

Yeah you have the same midfield 5 as me, and I expect many others. It's the combo difficulty of GW28 and GW29 that's making it so much harder to find someone

I think you gotta just try something a little out there. It's only two weeks. I think I might have some fun with the pick and go with a Pepe type of player. I'm WC'ing in 31 anyway.

I've a hunch that with the PL sewn up and 3 cup comps to win, City will ease off in the PL and rotate even more than usual. I'm gonna gradually divest myself of my 3 City assets, losing one for GW29 and another or both for GW33.

I'd say soon enough Sheff U and WBA will give up the ghost, and Newcastle have nothing in them, so of the strugglers I'd be looking at Fulham and the Brighton defence. Az, you don't mention Sanchez - he ought to be a good punt for a FH in the BGW.

Wolves have a great run coming up - will be interesting to see if they're up for the fight or accept midtable mediocrity. Liverpool finish the season with a great run of fixtures - there's still time to get rid and bring back if they look like they get in the mood late on.

certainly agree with the city statement, I'll be doing Gundo to Bale next week i think. Getting my head around Kane, Son, Bale is hard though.

Neves is a good pick from Wolves, explosive player, always involved..finding one or two differentials could be the difference in the run-in

I've got Reguilon to partner Kane and Bale. Marty's fixtures go south from GW31 just as Wolves get tasty, so I'm looking at Patricio and Semedo.

GW33 is tricky to put out a full team as you may want 4+ outfield players from City and Spurs. I've got a roadmap to Bench Boost in GW32, but I'd need a hit to put out a full team in GW33 (by losing my last Cityzen).

That is the point though, I am not sure I want 2 outfield players from City going in to 33, and I will be happy for a hit if needed to get City players back after 33 if necessary ... I think I would prefer nailed other players going from 30 to 33 rather than rotation risked City players ... I think I may just carry Gundogan & Stones/Ederson because they are an easy cheap pairing to cover with a decent bench.

A roadmap. What is the obsession with that phrase rather than "plan"? Seems to have come about with the plan to ease lockdown. Genuinely interested to hear and explanation for this term being more appropriate

A plan is a discrete series of actions.

A roadmap is an overview of the terrain you will be crossing.

Generally a map is required before making a plan because it will show the options available for moving from A to B. The plan is made when you decide on which specific route you will take.

            Something like that anyway. 🙂

Ruth has got this exactly right in my mind. They indicate different things but the nuance is valuable.

Also Ruth, it was me who made the title so your beef on that is with me. I opted for brevity and admittedly could have found a better one with words or more imagination, but didn't/don't think it took/takes away from the value of the post too much 🙂

too right, but I can’t bench 3 Spurs and 3 City in 33 if I play my FH in 29.

I will certainly be carrying 3 City for a few more games, and Gundogan & Stones/Ederson will certainly be part of my squad from now and for most of the season.

It’s just a matter of whether I carry a top priced premium City player that is up for grabs. I rotate my premiums anyway so I think starting lineups in the cups will determine how I manage my one City premium.

i believe you were suggesting you would get rid of all your City players from now onwards ? If so then then enjoy the red arrows 😉

It does look like the right line of thought to prepare for divestiture - The clue was in the bit where it says "Serious thought needs to be given to divesting from 1 or 2 of them post-GW27 imo - being a great team doesn’t automatically make them great FPL assets for the last 10 gameweeks - where they will have no doubles, 2 blanks & increasing (not decreasing) rotation" 😉

The City problem is interesting and I wonder if it actually is getting closer to time for Ederson. Or like you say, just not having 3.

Cancelo and Dias have only 5 or more twice each in the last 7 games.

And Gundo only has 1 assist in the last 5, not starting two of them..

      Agreed pretty much

I'm hoping this is where Ederson move in 26 comes into play. He and Martinez dovetail quite nicely for the good fixtures Martinez does have and it's a way of retaining City defence. Dodgy premium attackers make benching one of them okay for now.

If WBA beat Palace - perfectly plausible after all - they're back in with a shout I think. Likely just 5 off safety and given that all the in danger teams have tricky run ins that's not much at all. Just one upset away really. Lose or draw to Palace and they're gone I suppose.

Rider to all of this is to wonder how much value City have offered all season - their FPL value hasn't matched their real life dominance.

Even in their really hot defensive run the defenders were just decent value given modest attacking returns. Only Gundo has looked almost inevitable. I haven't checked but I'm guessing just one City defence and Cresswell for instance would have got you much the same - especially if you made an early move for Chelsea

      1. Andy_Social

There are six defenders who offer better value before you get to Stones. Ederson isn't even in the top 10 GK. Only Gundog ia a top value midfielder and I ain't even looking at forwards!

        1. pingissimus
          • 5 Years

Idea with Ederson is that he is possibly the only City player I'll have from 32 on. He won't be "value" but given non-performing premiums I don't care much about that.

I'm working on the basis that City defence will match or better all other defences from here on in.

The pattern last season where City were cup focussed was that the cs rolled in. Ederson then was better than the generic Pope for actual points. I can see a similar pattern where City grind out the 2-0 type results. I still want in on their defence.

Looking at this from 31/32 with no City mid. 33 creates zero issues for me. Dallas is retained for the run in. Digne is there until he gets his DGW.

          Ederson/Martinez
          Shaw Azpi Digne/Thiago/Rudiger Cresswell Dallas

I've Sterling, Cancelo and Dias and that Fulham fixture no longer looks decent with Fulham playing for their lives and in form...while City have CL on the horizon. I will be very tempted to move Sterling to Kane before deadlineeven if it costs me 8 points in the process!

Fulham don't score mind; they keep clean sheets. I'd still start the 2 defenders and see how Pep rotates them. Raz though - I'm playing him but I can see the case for getting rid now.

              Fair dos

I may or may not make the move this week. Think I prefer to have my GW29 eleven already set and have 2FTs after the IB by rolling in 29.

No WC so see a clear benefit to having the FTs around when all those GW31 WCs are being played.

I'm unsure, think there could be a few goals in the NLD and City Fulham could be a tight affair... hard to predict tbh and probably better off sticking like you say. One probably for me is captaincy if Sterling doesn't play whereas Kane is looking very reliable! Who will you captain?

I know you didn't make the title but it's such nonsense. Motivation? What makes anyone think it's as simplistic as this makes out?

Guardiola simply won't allow any sign of lack of motivation in his players; if it's absent they will be dropped. Neither will he rotate any differently to what he always does other than perhaps slightly favouring the CL. He knows (evidently better than the writer does) how important momentum is in achieving success. Motivation is a state of mind, not something you can switch on and off like a tap.

Wilder already has his players focused on preparing for next season. Being free of relegation worry will likely liberate them, not depress them. You are dismissing WBA too early and favouring Brighton too highly because Allardyce clearly has his team believing it can be done whereas Potter's players just look bemused at the collective ineffectiveness their manager has coached them into.

And what about Liverpool? They have been playing like a de-motivated team for weeks, even months, despite having everything to play for. They are happy enough when things go their way but have become sullen when they don't and even Andy Robertson (a professional if ever there was one) is finding less in his legs. Milner & Henderson are the only ones that have looked truly on it and one is injured while the other is 35 and can't play every game any more.

I could go on but in essence it's far too early in the season to be thinking like this. Motivation is a complex matter and is formed out of a lot more than someone looking at the table and deciding who has something to play for and who doesn't. You can factor that in for the last few weeks of the season maybe but there are still more than 25% of the games to be played.

      1. pingissimus

WBA don't look like a team to target any more to me. If anything they are on the up.

The Everton result doesn't look like a one off if you look at goals conceded in the last 6 and even if you take shots in box they are in exactly the same territory as Spurs and West Ham. And what with Palace up next those stats are only going to improve.

Win against Palace and they're right back in it imo.
