Can Ibrahima Konaté offer a cut-price option in Liverpool’s defence?

After a sordid season of centre-backs on sidelines, Liverpool moved early to secure the signature of Ibrahima Konaté (£5.5m) this summer.

The Reds reportedly agreed to pay the defender’s £36m release clause at Red Bull Leipzig.

Konaté begins a long-term Anfield contract on July 1, having been on a short duty with the France Under-21 team at the European Championships.

He has been priced at £0.5m more than defensive colleagues Joe Gomez (£5.0m) and Joel Matip (£5.0m), while Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) is the most expensive of the bunch.

Much of Konaté’s appeal could come down to the fitness of those three players, with pre-season set to tell FPL bosses how Liverpool’s defence might shape up.

THE HISTORY

Konaté (left) in action for Leipzig

Having graduated through the academy at French outfit Sochaux, Konaté made his professional debut with the club at the age of 17.

Leipzig snapped up the centre-half on a free transfer in the same year, 2017, tying him down to a five-year contract.

He made a solid breakthrough into Die Roten Bullen’s first team, clocking up 16 appearances before becoming a regular under Ralf Rangnick in 2018/19 with 28 showings.

However, injuries in the two following campaigns saw Konaté in and out of Julian Nagelsmann’s XI, making just six starts in 2019/20 and eight last season. He did also appear off the bench six times during 2020/21, along with making five Champions League group stage starts. On the acquisition, Jurgen Klopp said:

“I’m really pleased we’ve been able to add a player of Ibrahima’s quality to our squad and he is someone I’ve admired for a long time, ever since I first became aware of his potential when he was at Sochaux. After the problems we had with injuries in the centre-half position last season, there’s no doubt it was clear it was an area of the team we needed to strengthen — but I first have to say that the job Nat [Phillips], Rhys [Williams] and Ozan [Kabak] did was incredible. Unbelievable really. (Ibrahima) comes to us after playing more than 90 times for Leipzig in the Bundesliga and European football. I’m sure that number would have been more but for some injury – but even so, that means he already has experience of what it takes to compete in two outstandingly difficult competitions. He also played for a team in the Champions League in high-pressure matches, who have a similar football vision to ourselves.”

With just two goals in total for Leipzig in four seasons, Konaté will not offer the type of goal threat we expect from defenders such as Van Dijk.

PLAYING STYLE

Konaté battles with Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski

Where better to hear about Konaté’s style of play than from the horse’s mouth? On the central defender, Klopp explained:

“In Ibrahima we are signing a player who will add to the quality we already have here. His physical attributes are very impressive; he is quick, he is very strong and he is dominant in the air.”

The Liverpool boss also expects Konaté to be able to slot in immediately for the Anfield club.

“I am confident we are signing a player who can play for us right away but he is a boy of 22 years of age, who has room to improve because of his massive potential. I know that’s something he is eager to work on with us, to become an even better player. For me, that’s really exciting because I have seen how good he is already and I’m looking forward to working with him when he joins up with us in pre-season.” – Jurgen Klopp

It is also no surprise, considering Liverpool’s style of play, that Konaté is thought to be comfortable in possession and able to begin attacks by bringing the ball forward. German football expert Raphael Honigstein told Liverpool’s official site of the centre-back:

“He is a very technical centre-back. In terms of his development as a player, I think it has been pretty good if you consider the fact that (Leipzig) was the first big club he played for and he has gone from a player that was picked up for free to a player seen as the solution to one of Liverpool’s problems next season. He is just a top, an absolute top player. If it’s true that centre-backs, a little bit like centre-forwards, tend to mature a little bit later – and I guess (Virgil) van Dijk is a very good example of that – then the ceiling is still very, very high for him. I think there’s a lot more he can achieve and he can personally aspire to. So, top buy, in my view.”

As with Klopp, Honigstein believes that Konaté – a fluent English speaker – is ready for Premier League football.

“There’s always a bit of adjustment of course when you come to the Premier League. Liverpool play a similar game to Leipzig in many ways, with the high line and the pressing, but of course it’s still slightly different. I think he is ready to play at this level. I think the valuation that Leipzig had on him is realistic and it shows you what kind of position he has achieved in terms of his future. I think Leipzig always knew to a certain extent that he was going to attract huge interest, which is why this release clause was put there in the first place. I think they knew all along that Leipzig wasn’t going to be his last stop, he was destined for very great things, I think.” – Raphael Honigstein

THE STATISTICS

Konaté captained France Under-21s in their defeat to the Netherlands

Across all competitions last season, Konaté made 1.71 tackles per 90 minutes. He also boasts impressive statistics in terms of aerial duels, winning 3.28 headers per 90.

Konaté also attempted 62.81 passes per 90 minutes last season, completing almost 85% of those. Should Liverpool keep a clean sheet, the defender could end up in the frame for bonus points depending on the result.

He also made 3.35 progressive passes and 4.35 progressive carries every 90 minutes, speaking to his ability to move and carry the ball forward. An average of 1.07 penalty-area touches per 90 compares favourably to positional rivals across Europe’s top five leagues.

However, ‘minutes played’ is the most pertinent statistic in relation to the Frenchman. Over league and cup campaigns in Germany, Konaté managed just 681 minutes in 2019/20 and 1,170 minutes in 2020/21.

He did play 90 minutes for France Under-21s in their delayed European Championship quarter-final against Holland on May 31, so Liverpool will hope he is fit coming into pre-season.

THE PROSPECTS

The van Dijk injury latest as Richarlison gets set for a three-match suspension

As previously alluded to, Konaté’s first-team prospects will come down to his own fitness and crucially, the availability of other centre-backs to Klopp.

Nat Phillips (£4.5m) is another name, along with Gomez and Matip, that will be competing for a spot alongside van Dijk when all options are available.

However, while Phillips performed admirably in the absence of that other trio, Konaté’s signing suggests game time could be hard to come by for the Englishman in the new season.

Only six teams conceded more big chances than the Reds last season. Three of those were relegated, with Crystal Palace, Southampton and Leeds the others. The Whites also tightened up defensively towards the latter part of the campaign.

If he is jettisoned into the first team immediately, Konaté will be expected to hastily improve Liverpool’s defensive record from last season.

While he will not be able to compete with either of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) or Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) in terms of attacking points, Konaté could present a viable option for FPL bosses seeking a cheaper route into the Liverpool defence.

Made some tweaks after thinking it through. Getting rid of Kane, and spreading a risk.

    Donna Pickford
    Maehle Meunier Spina Maguire Stones
    Zuber* FTorres Chiesa* Damsgaard Sterling
    Morata Schick Lukaku

I like Zuber a lot but maybe I'll go with Shaq. I like Chiesa but he is not safe as Insigne. Have enough funds to make both cjanges.

Not sure I get the risk spreading thing. Yeah you're in a good spot if there's a shock in the qf's but it's more likely there won't be then you're just getting battered by all the Spain heavy teams

I dont see why is Kane a must. England is now more defensive team rather than attacking one. Also Kane plays deep for England, much better option is to Captain Sterling that day. Schick or Seferovic could outscore him easily imo.

Man Utd ideal for Rice. Man Utd should be looking to buy all these young English players and be the England team of the future. Sancho, Rice and Godfrey are the players to take them to the next level.

      Henderson*
      AWB* Godfrey* Maguire* Shaw*
      Rice* McTominay
      Sancho* Fernandes Rashford*
      Greenwood*

"Ruined" is bit of a harsh term. Do you suggest that if Abramovich and Mansour didnt own two clubs, that those upcoming big money signings would never happen? Of course it would, somebody else would buy the club and do the exactly same thing. Its not ruining everything, its just the natural evolution of the market. For a couple of years a new owner might do something so drastically and start a new trend which will make us look on chelsea and city as the "good old days of football". Its just the way it is ,there is no ruining anything

Jimmy Hill. When he worked to abolish the maximum wage cap.

That turned football into a business. Players became very expensive resources and the club owners had to find a way to fund the acquisition and maintenance of those resources otherwise they would be kaput.

Everything you have seen since began with that. Whether it is creation of the PL and CL, the selling of TV rights to Sky / BT, the European Super League etc.

It’s been heading this way since 1992 as others have said, not sure you can pick one person to blame. For a long while, United outspent everyone then it was Chelsea and now City.

      That’s just the competitiveness issue.

The wider issue for me is fans being charged a fortune to follow their sides by clubs, TV companies, shirt manufacturers and authorities who don’t consider the match going supporter when scheduling games, only the bottom line.

      Digne and ESR? Five maybe.

So Kane & Grealish could very easily still be at Villa & Spurs by the end of the transfer window…

City can sign Messi for free instead of spending 100m+ on the England guys

Then Haaland is available for 70m in 11 months time due to his buyout clause

Good to have those options for them I suppose

Messi isn't going anywhere. Laporta becoming president locked that one in.

Haaland also doesn't seem like a Pep signing. Kane and Grealish fit better but are pricy so I think it'll be one or the other.

Last year he was hoping to play alongside Kun at City. I doubt he'll come now, and if he did his heart would be in it - not enough to justify his salary anyway. I can assure you in all certainty, he would not be trolling my FPL squad.

Looks super value given his age (and it has to be said - given his passport also) doesn’t he?

I just hope against hope he doesn’t come in & do a Timo Werner & turn out to be a big fish from the small Bundesliga pond who gets swallowed up in the PL

Then again, given his position, there won’t even be a lot of pressure on him to score goals, which may help

Bruno is going to have a field day with these guys in front of him again this season

Hope they replace Pogba with Rice now and Martial can go as well - get those two lazy barstools out of the dressing room once & for all - they can take their talents somewhere they can phone in performances and turn up when they feel like it

Jack Harrison being Man City’s top scoring midfielder last season says it all when it comes to picking their FPL assets

There’s so much value in the game again this year - Harrison & Raphinha look gifts at those prices when you consider Leeds scored 62 goals last season & don’t have Europe

Damn right. And Pep's midfield rotation will only be worse this season with Forres demanding more minutes and Jack's impending arrival.
I'm starting with Raph and am very open to a Leeds double-up in midfield with Harrison.

      Ooof

They only have KWP as a recognised fullback at the minute so he’d surely be nailed at 4.0

Kid is a great prospect too, can get up and down the touchline like nobody’s business

I’d be somewhat suprised if Ole let him go without signing someone first though

He has Telles & Shaw LB’s, but no natural cover for AWB RB at the minute beyond playing a CB like Tuanzebe OOP

Yes agree. One to keep an eye on. Will mess up my TAA/Dias/Shaw picks lol. Could maybe get away with two 4.0's on the bench then, the Norwich lad being the other. Would then give me the 0.5 I need to get Toney as third striker.

I would be very cautious with the Shaw pick regardless. The lad is more injury prone than a glass bottle dropped from third floor.
GW1 is in 6 weeks and Englands route to a potential European World Cup final looks promising to say the least.
Slim chance for Shaw to take part of the first few GWs I reckon.

Perraud will be announced any day now and then that will simply mean Williams will be used as cover/competition for KWP & Perraud. I've still got him in atm though! Depending where he and Neco Williams end up come August, one of those two will be in my 15 at 4.0

Bamford (16%) and Shaw’s (34%) ownerships are very interesting

Shaw is the most owned defender, and there are 13 attackers with higher ownerships than Bamford

There’s serious potential for those percentages to pretty much reverse in the space of a week if/when Bamford nicks a return or two at Old Trafford & simultaneously removes Shaw’s clean sheet

Rapha over Bamford on value. I like the look of three 7.5 forwards to start. Can always downgrade one.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years

I'm really liking DCL as a GW1 pick as he allows that sideways move to Bamford as well as a downwards move to a 7.5 if he flops

(Its just a bit trickier to go from a 7.5 up to Bamford)

Honestly think we're all potentially sleeping on Bamford, he's going to be fully rested (fatigue was killing him at times) and looks such an obvious fire & forget pick in a serious attack, plus penalties

Rodrigo just seemed too brittle to last for long spells to offer real competition

        1. Guba
          • 8 Years
          2 years, 10 months ago

I don't want to double up initially so as you say for me it's a wait and see with DCL as possibly placeholder. Raph @ 6.5 too good value to pass up.

Bamford isn't an out n out striker. So I'm not worried about him destroying me. He's usually limited to max 1 goal per game.

This is the reason I'm laying off Bamford for now. That and the 100 nails in Raph's name. As MBP says, with DCL I can easily slide over to Bam if he does start sharp. I'm keeping the likes of Meslier and Llorente on my backburner until fixtures ease, so Bam could come in quick if necessary.

    3. RAMZES666

I have Bamdord in my draft as well, along with Watkins and Toney. I think mid price strikers with 2 premium mids are the way to go. Can see Vardy's minutes reduced this season.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

Ha, Watkins and Toney are my forwards with DCL at the mo. I'm trying out ONE premium (Salah) - it leaves so much cash for a very decent defence and midfield. Vardy has no appeal, and I'm also off Nacho with Foxes bringing in a new striker. Mind you, if Villa go for Tammy, I might drop Ollie too.

Good idea. I've been toying with the idea of dropping KDB/Bruno for maybe a Mahrez+Maddison combo. Enables me to upgrade a 5.5m mid or 5m def to Robertson.

I have same front 3 as you at the moment, fairly template!

My concern with Watkins is if Villa bring in Tammy Abraham, available for 40M. That would necessitate rotation. If it's just Jack leaving, I'd be fine with Watkins.

Surprised if he's flying under the radar based on a single opening fixture but suspect that will change nearer kick-off - especially with a decent amount of £4.5m defenders who can step in. I'm keeping off Utd defenders though, if that says anything.
