FPL team guide 21/22 – Liverpool: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Liverpool.

The Reds’ title defence floundered badly but they ended the campaign in good form, with a late-season comeback enough to earn Champions League football.

Jurgen Klopp’s side won eight of their final 10 league games to lock in a third-place finish.

With Liverpool hoping to have several defenders back fit this season, another title challenge should be on the cards at Anfield – and their players will once again be at forefront of Fantasy managers’ thoughts.

As well as reading this preview, subscribers of Fantasy Football Scout can get in-depth Opta player and team data on Klopp’s troops in our Premium Members Area.

Maximising Profit With Your Wildcard

Having lost Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Joe Gomez (£5.0m) to long-term injuries early in the season, Liverpool’s defensive crisis became even worse when Joel Matip (£5.0m) – who had been playing sporadically – saw his campaign curtailed by injury at the end of January.

Liverpool defensive statsTotalRank v other PL teams
Goals conceded424th
Clean sheets125th=
Shots conceded3322nd
Shots in the box conceded2264th
Shots on target conceded1406th
Big chances conceded8114th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)43.636th

Liverpool’s ranking for big chances conceded portrays how Klopp’s defence struggled in the absence of three senior centre-backs.

The Reds (14th) allowed 45 more gilt-edged opportunities than Man City (1st) and 39 more than Chelsea (2nd).

Three of the six sides to give up more big chances than Klopp’s team were relegated last season.

Eleven of those 81 big chances were conceded in defeats against Aston Villa (7-2) and Manchester City (4-1).

While Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Andy Robertson (£7.0m) have many more routes to FPL scoring than just clean sheet points, owners will be hoping that Liverpool can tighten up significantly in 2021/22 – and the return of several key centre-backs will surely only help in that regard.

Full backing

Liverpool’s leaky defence has not stopped FPL managers buying both full-backs in droves.

Alexander-Arnold currently sits in 27.2% of squads, with Robertson making 12.6% of selections.

After ending the season at £7.8m, ‘TAA’ returns to the same price tag with which he started the 2020/21 season.

After a largely underwhelming campaign, Alexander-Arnold was back to his best from Gameweek 28 onwards.

The right-back racked up 75 points at an average of 7.5 per game, creating 11 more chances over that period (33) than nearest challenger Luke Shaw (22).

I joined both last year, found this site to be more user friendly (probably because i have been using it longer). The player comparison graphics are kinda cool on Hub but safe to say i will only be paying for FFS this time around. Defo think you only need to be a member of one as the stats and converations are largely identical.

I haven't properly started engaging this year, but last year FFHub had an xPts statistic which was incredibly useful (essentially combining xG, xA, appearance and bonus points to give an expectation of fantasy points over the last few games).

Can't say whether anything is different this time

I’m a member of both, when I actually use scout I prefer it because the stats and heat maps are better

But the hub app and interface is way better and easier to use and access on phone for me which I’m on 95% of the time instead of laptop

You don’t need a membership of both but if had to reccomend one it would be hub just for the app

I used to be a member here but switched to hub. Happy with my decision but there's not much between the 2, definitely don't need to be a member of both.

Also even without assists, 4.5 for 100 points in a defence that could improve is a great bench option.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

This, precisely. Leeds went through a huge chunk of last season without either of their preferred CBs of the previous season (White Koch), yet still kept 12 clean sheets. There has to be some significant regression or another defensive crisis for that to drop below 10 this season, and that's good for a rotating 4.5

        ...and then there's the xA

Any thoughts on this please people? Still my first draft.

Here we go, first draft and post for the season:

    Sanchez (4.0)
    TAA - Dias - Fofana/Lamptey (4.0)
    Salah - Bruno - Havertz - ESR (4.5)
    Toney - DCL - Watkins

    0.0itb

ESR could become Digne and a switch to 433, but not sure about that.

    1. CONNERS
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

I quite like it - Havertz is the only question mark for me.

He could be great for the first game assuming he starts in the 9 role.

Thereafter, fixtures are pretty awful, plus the added risk of rotation with Werner & Co.

    Do your worst...
Just find defensive returns more random at the start of the season so will wait and see, and always have wildcard.
Easy to get Kane with this team

    Sanchez,
    Kiko, Coufal, White, Fofana
    Son, Bruno, Salah, Raph
    Vardy, DCL

    4.0, Gilmour, Ayling, Obafemi

    Here's the draft:

    Bachmann | Foster
TAA Robbo Digne Lamptey | Omobamidele
Salah Bruno Raphinha | Brownhill Gilmour
    Watkins Nacho Antonio

    Here's the plan:

Taking Robbo, 4.5 mids and the strikers as my most mobile spots in the first 6-8 GWs. Robbo to Ayling by GW3, 4.5 mid to Pepe or any mid at/below 7.5m by GW4. Treating Robbo as an attacker for those first two fixtures, then jumping off if someone in midfield proves nailed and in statistical form with good fixtures. Or Robbo might just stay/return if back to his FPL best. Watkins to Jimenez or just hold (he was somewhat fixture-proof last season) by GW4. Antonio goes when Europa League starts or he stays if still firing. Nacho goes if not nailed or his performance drops.

Pre-GW7 (Digne + Bachmann) and long-term (premiums + Raphinha), I have medium/high hopes for everybody else in the XI when fit. There's 0.5m ITB for bandwagons, upgrades (e.g. Omobamidele) and the usual unexpected events of FPL. Nailed Chelsea def gets squeezed in by GW7/8, hopefully

Just my thoughts and hopes for now. Waiting for preseason news 🙂

His supply line has been shattered, through the second half of last season and now with Richarlison getting an Olympic break. He's a poacher, not a self-creating type (Kane), so I'm monitoring the transfer activity around him rather than his undeniable talent. As things stand, Wilson ranks ahead of him in my mind. Wilson makes things happen out of nothing, which makes him unpredictable and a good mid/long-term asset... But Nacho, IF nailed, is in a Europe-chasing team with multiple supply lines and has shown his penchant for goals. He's an easy transfer out to the likes of Bamford/DCL/Wilson/Jimenez/Cavani if he flops though

I like Watford's defence + fixtures as much as I like Brighton's without White. I also prefer Bachmann's save count to Sanchez's, and he reinforced that sentiment in Euros. There's also this: I can get Brighton's CS with Lamptey's attacking returns, and I can get Bachmann's saves, BPS and possible CS from the defensive low-scoring Watford team

Actually misread Watkins as Wilson based on your above comment. Confident in Villa given Grealish uncertainty/Buendia's newness?

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          2 years, 9 months ago

Buendia is one of the best possible replacements for Grealish on Villa's budget, and he's already proven himself as a creator in EPL two seasons ago (when defences were statistically better than last season, mind), so I think they're covered. Three GWs of the best fixtures in the league is also a really good short-term punt even for someone like Welbeck or Benteke, so I'm confident enough to start with Villa's spearhead

The true confidence would be in holding Watkins through that run, especially if the whole league feels leaky again. I can't predict today whether Watkins would be in my team by the GW4 deadline. Maybe even GW3 if they prove horrendous. I want to be open to new trends

Personally wouldn't go near him - that dual GK arrangement has disaster & uncertainty written all over it, regardless of Ole's murmurings

Yeah. Deano can only START the season as first choice, but there's no guarantee of that being the case by GW3, except if DDG leaves

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          2 years, 9 months ago

Yep - if DDG leaves, then I wouldn't have reservations on Henderson starting

But while they're both on the books, Ole can say all he wants - not even he himself will know who'll start from week depending on how they're both doing daily in training and in matches

They both have absolute howlers in their locker, and with one always breathing down the other's neck it's not going to help them stay settled & calm is how I'd see it

Could be wrong of course, wouldn't be the first time 🙂

I went with Kane and Raphinia now.

No united cover makes me a bit uneasy though for the first games, but overall, I think the team is better. 10 for Son feels a bit too much when I don't know how the new manager will set up.

    Do your Worst.....

    Martinez
    Shaw | Cresswell | TAA
    Salah | Beundia | Grealish | Zaha
    DCL | Pukki | Vardy

    Foster | Gilmour | Manquilla | Lamptey

    0.5 ITB

Not sure on Vardy and Pukki personally. Nacho over Vardy saves you 2.5m.

    2. Cynical
      • 7 Years

Think Iheanacho can outscore Vardy and then you can upgrade Zaha with the money to a City mid, maybe Son

    3. CONNERS
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

It's a bit different. Not keen on Pukki to start with at least. Also prefer on of the many 7.5/8m forwards to Vardy.

      You could do....

      Pukki to Toney
      Vardy to Watkins
Then use the 3m ITB to do Zaha to Son.

    4. pingissimus
      • 5 Years

      First Zaha I've seen

Bold. Could pay if he is positioned more central and less wide. Put simply the wider he goes the less interesting he becomes. Last season he started fairly central and went progressively wider (in general) and his returns went from close to best in class (people forget that bit 😉 ) to meh.

Wait on how Vieira goes is my advice. Would go Pepe first here

    Draft 1

    Hendo
    TAA | James | Lamptey
    Mo | Mahrez | Havertz | Torres | Mads
    Nacho | Cavani

    Foster | White | Fofana | Obafemi

    1. nolard

A couple of uncertainties - Torres, Mahrez and James.

Reece James will play almost every game. Mahrez I think will start majority of the first bunch of games. Torres a bit of a wait and see.

As long as we don’t sign another striker he is. Tuchel prefers Werner on the left making diagonal runs.

Quite liking this set up, covers most bases and a decent bench.

    Sanchez
    TAA - Digne - Cancelo - Shaw

    Watkins - Wilson - Toney

    Foster / Raphinha - White - Brownhill

      Thanks

Yes Dias would be safer, but generally has a 6 point ceiling.

Cancelo can play quite advanced and has the potential for double-figure hauls and much more exciting to own.

      1. Cynical

Understandable, risk vs reward etc. Tbf you do have Raphina and White to come in if Cancelo and Shaw don't start GW1.

Raph will play most weeks which would only leave ESR and two 4.5's on the bench.

I don't think that's too strong a bench with Covid risk, etc.

Pretty similar to mine. You have faith in ESR where I have faith in Digne. May I suggest Ayling over Fofana, regardless of the GW1 fixture? More nailed in a surprisingly better defence, and far more involved in their attack. Rodgers with a fully fit squad has every tool to change formation on a dime

Think it's a nice team with flexibility in structure. Having 0.5M ITB is a a good idea. I'm unsure on the upside of Fofana as he doesn't seem to be good for BPS and has little attacking output. .

League code widget. Down as Community Members or something like that now - you can't run FPL leagues with a buy in now, be it cash leagues or leagues with paid membership, so it's open to anyone with an account iirc
