The best goalkeepers and defenders for Sky Fantasy Football before Overhaul

Our Sky Fantasy Football coverage continues as we assess the best defenders for the start of the season.

We’re only concerned about the first three rounds of matches of 2021/22 here, as the Overhaul kicks in after Gameweek 3.

And if you missed it, check our expert strategy guide with Niall and Luke – who can boast third and fourth-place overall finishes between them – in the video below.

Goalkeepers

Emiliano Martinez, last season’s top-scoring keeper, comes in at £7.2m. Aston Villa sit top of the Season Ticker for the opening three Gameweeks when sorted by defence. The Argentine’s popularity will only increase ahead of the new season kicking off.

Martinez comes with the added bonus of having made 143 saves last season, the most of any goalkeeper not relegated in the last campaign. That will stand him in good stead for the tier points for saves.

In third on the ticker are Brighton, which puts Robert Sanchez (£6.5m) in the Sky spotlight. Offering a decent saving on Martinez, the Seagulls netminder will appeal to those wanting to use budget elsewhere – but he does come with the downside of not making too many saves, averaging only 2.34 stops per 90 minutes.

Illan Meslier (£6.9m), meanwhile, was far busier: he was just two saves behind Martinez overall. Leeds are low down on the defensive ticker, though that should afford their keeper the chance to make plenty of stops.

While Alisson (£7.8m) has great fixtures, the appeal of his defensive colleagues and the lack of save bonus means the Liverpool keeper is set to be overlooked.

At the other end of the market, Daniel Bachmann (£6.3m) will be one of the cheapest starting goalkeepers in Sky Fantasy this season.

Watford kept a total of 23 clean sheets in the Championship in 2020/21, with their defence even more watertight after Xisco Munoz was appointed as head coach.

Defenders

The best mid-price and premium FPL defenders for 2021/22 1

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£10.5m) is the prime Reds candidate at the back given a potent mix of clean sheet potential, attacking returns and ability to garner tier points for shots and especially passes. The only slight issue is that Liverpool host Chelsea in Gameweek 3, though that is unlikely to put many off the right-back given his attacking prowess and opening two games against Norwich (a) and Burnley (H).

Andrew Robertson (£10.1m) marginally outscored Alexander-Arnold last season, in four more starts, by 201 to 196. The Scotsman is also a big tier-points threat in terms of passes and tackles, though shoots far less often than his full-back colleague. Robertson managed 19 goal attempts last season, compared to 55 for his teammate on the opposite wing. However, the former (57) did beat the latter (44) for total Sky bonus points in 2020/21.

Ibrahima Konate (£8.8m), incidentally, looks set to start the season at the back so offers a cut-price alternative to those flying full-backs.

While Manchester City’s first three games are not overly appealing, Ruben Dias (£10.6m) could offer an enticing captaincy option on the Saturday of Gameweek 3. The Citizens face Arsenal at home in the day’s early kick-off, meaning Sky players can see those two teamsheets before the day’s deadline.

Dias finished as the top-scoring defender in Sky in 2021/22 and was streets ahead of the competition for tier 2 passing bonus, so even when clean sheets are lacking, can more than compensate in other areas.

On the flip side, Vladimir Coufal (£8.1m) and Aaron Cresswell (£8.3m) were seldom in the mix for passing bonus – although the former was fond of a tackle or two.

Rather, their appeal came from attacking returns with eight assists apiece.

While they’re not great long-term holds in Sky because of the lack of bonus, a decent opening run of matches and the fact that they play on a Sunday/Monday in the first two Gameweeks makes them a consideration as captaincy contenders.

The Aston Villa back four all present alternatives to Martinez or potential complements for those brave enough to double up. Ezri Konsa (£7.5m) could offer great value, having been on the end of more big chances (seven) than any other defender last season.

But like Coufal and Cresswell, the lack of bonus point accumulation means that they are simply fixture-led short-term plays until the first Overhaul.

With uncertainty around the fitness of several Brighton defenders at the time of writing, Joel Veltman (£7.2m) is a cheap route into the Seagulls’ backline. The versatile Dutchman made 25 starts in 2020/21 and should garner extra game time considering the imminent departure of Ben White (£7.8m) and injury doubt surrounding Tariq Lamptey (£7.2m).

Graham Potter’s love of playing out from the back means that Albion are one of the few clubs outside the usual ‘elite’ who can offer defenders that pick up passing bonus, too.

For just that bit extra, Lewis Dunk (£8.2m) gives you an added goal threat and indeed finished seventh among Sky defenders for points last season.

If you are seeking Leicester captaincy coverage for the Monday of Gameweek 2, Wesley Fofana (£7.9m) is the cheapest option in the Foxes’ defence. However, he may have to compete with Jonny Evans (£8.3m) and Caglar Soyuncu (£8.2m) for pitch time if Brendan Rodgers uses a back four.

Soyuncu had an injury-affected season but is one to watch, having gained bonus points in more than half of his appearances in 2020/21.

Lucas Digne (£8.5m), with 121 points, was well behind Everton’s top-scoring defender Michael Keane (£8.3m) last season. He’s very much in the same boat as Cresswell and Coufal: capable of racking up attacking and defensive returns in the first three Gameweeks but having limited long-term appeal because of his bonus aversion.

Ben Chilwell (£9.6m) may prove a tad expensive before the Overhaul considering Chelsea’s opening run. However, the Blues do face Crystal Palace at home in Gameweek 1 and were the league’s meanest defence over the second half of the season.

Slightly cheaper but just as appealing is Antonio Rudiger (£9.0m), who was a regular accumulator of tier 2 passing bonus upon Thomas Tuchel’s appointment.

Liam Cooper (£6.9m) had a similar magnetism to Sky bonus as Rudiger, although in both Leeds and Chelsea’s cases, there is a little uncertainty over who gets the nod at centre-half.

Just try something different. How about this? Punt with Pepe & Alli early on?

    Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA, Digne, Coufal (White, Ayling)
    Salah, Fernandes, Alli, Raphinha, Pepe
    Watkins, Antonio (Obafemi)

Go for it mate, don't ever want to put people off from going against the template. Alli could be huge if he regains some of his early career form at just 6.5m

For me, it one of players from template did not perform GW1 and GW2, there will be massive transfer out. However, with punt like Alli or Pepe might take some time to change the price if underperform.

I'm not sure on Wood. He is in Olympic now. Kane might not start gw1. Bowen, Alli, Sarr kind of punt.

For me Wood is to pricey and I think there's better 7.5 options than Wilson.

I think dunk is also overpriced with white leaving.

Cancelo and Alli could be great picks but worry having both given rotation.

      I quite like the defense.

I think the midfield is a bit weak. Alli a real unknown at this stage, not sure if Bowen is completely nailed with Europa and esp if they sign Lingard and also Sarr is promising but hard to predict newly promoted teams/players.

Kane will be more appealing if he signs for City but the more I think about it, the more I'm coming around to the idea that he is a wait and see. He is traditionally a slow starter and takes time to get up to match fitness. He could miss GW1. If he stays at Spurs, there could be a cloud over him as he wants a move. If he does go to City, will be nailed for 90mins straight away?

Wood is at the Olympics so I think there are better options than him to start with.

It probably depends on your playing style. If you like double ups, then Buendia could be very good. Backing a team strongly can pay off if they show good form. You could get some Watkins goal Buendia assists for example. On the flip side though, if Villa don't get off to a good start, by GW4 you will want both Buendia and Watkins out of your team and will already be chasing other managers.

At this stage, and with the fixture swing so severe for Villa, I'd probably avoid the double up personally but I do think it's a valid strategy.

Ah yeah I do. It could become Sancho + Son as well.

Lots of options. But it's those two MF spots as well as one of the 4.5m defenders that I'm messing around with.

Could do Mahrez, Son, Chilwell over Bruno, Havertz, Ait Nouri something like that.

The rest of the team is pretty set tbh. Maybe Iheanacho over Antonio but we have charity shield as a nice warm-up to watch so I can decide on that.

I have something along the same lines. I think I'd go with C, then A, with B the least appealing.

Havertz and Sancho are both something of unknown quantities, and a bit of a risk at the price. It's an easy enough change to so Son or Mahrez to one of them if they are ripping it up.

Of course, Mahrez will get the odd benching so if your ok with that, I think he's a good option.

I kinda like Sterling tbh. I dunno something about his overall fitness, form at the euros and big differential status is quite appealing. He also allows me to swap to a lot of other players if he doesn't work out. 2 weeks and then if he's no good I can do Sterling > Son just in time for WAT.

I think there are worse differentials to pick up.

I do see the appeal of Sterling, he is certainly explosive on his day, but I just think his price makes him a bit unappealing. I see himself and Mahrez having similar points potential over the first few GWs. Mahrez is 2m cheaper, possibly on pens, might get more minutes if Pep wants to ease back in some of the Euros players.

If you go with Sancho and Sterling, your team is relatively risky early on imo. You have to play one of White or Ait-Nouri each week, both of whom have bad fixtures to start. Antonio is a good pick but could be an injury waiting to happen, could see Sterling getting benched, Sancho and Toney both new to the PL.

Yes but he has Chelsea and City in GWs 2 and 3.

I guess my point is, worse case scenario in GW2 Sterling is benched. Pep has been known to bench him pretty regularly against easier teams. Then you have to play both White and Ait-Nouri (if Ait-Nouri even starts) vs Chelsea and Spurs. You also have Raphinha and Digne playing each other which isn't ideal. If Sancho and/or Toney don't hit the ground running, then you are be off to a bad start.

Lots of ifs and buts there. Long story short, Sterling could be great but I personally think Mahrez or Son are equally as good and can give you money itb or money to strengthen your squad depth.

I think if there is time to own Mahrez, it is now. I wouldn't be that brave to spend transfer to get him in mid season, but on wildcard, I would (to quote Andy LTFPL there). The roulette wheel won't be spinning full speed, so I guess it's worth the risk. I have that mid spot reserved for a risk, so it will be Maherz or Jota.

TL;DR - C or downgrade defender to get Bruno and Mahrez. Havertz, I think fixtures are too difficult. Sure, mid season, you probably won't sell him even with that fixture run, but why getting him on wildcard (Andy LTFPL).

Good points. Don't really agree with Andy that Mahrez can't be brought in mid-season. If he hits a really hot patch of form he will be bought.

I also really hope that one or two big City/Chelsea mids emerge as actual explosive options this year. Last year was so stale with the template Salah, Bruno, Son etc. because there was no competition from Sterling, Pulisic, Havertz, Mahrez.

I just want the steady eddys to have poor seasons this time and for some braver managers to profit. I'd also love it if a player like Werner or Aubameyang turns everything on its head.

A lot of these risk averse managers will wait way too long for fear of getting burnt.

        1. Nanoelektronicar
          • 9 Years

He said it about Havertz, I extrapolated that to Mahrez too. 🙂 The problem with Mahrez was that he always gets benched right in the middle of that hot patch. He goes back to back 15 pointers, you jump, and he gets benched. I think Pep considers him the member of a strong(er) side now, but that doesn't mean he's immune from rotation yet.

Yes, the season needs some template busters, some really risk worthy options. Going for the likes last season was differentiating just to be different.

I think Cavani will certainly be rotated with Martial and Greenwood. He has a high ceiling when on the pitch but I just think the 7.5s are more steady options.

I gave it a shot for the first time last year and had a lot of fun. It lets/makes you pick players you wouldn't even consider in FPL

Yes. The different scoring system, prices, and positions of players certainly prods you in some different directions.

Plus because less people play it you genuinely have a chance of winning it and it's a good prize unlike FPL

I've taken more to try to avoid public opinion. By reading the templates you tend to be swayed by them it's only natural. What I have come to realize is that you will never win anything with the same team as everyone else.

So I steer away mostly. Just speaking with a few close friends on the whole

I am trying to find the nice in between balance in setting up a team. 4/5 picks max who I think are unappreciated options.

I never seemed to have got into SKY at all seems very 'clunky' plus there is all the changing of captains. It is sort of messy as well and transferring captains out, looking at matchday days and so on. You end up being like a 'virtual secretary' looking at a diary/calendar imo.
Normally I lose interest by Christmas. Thinking of skipping it this year.

It's just different. You get used to it

That was my second time in the top 10 last season. It's certainly a knack you have to learn and yse you do need to be a bit disciplined.

But most of the research you already do for FPL so why not?

I have played SKY a number of years and each year I have kind of gone through the motions with it. I think part of my problem is that it is a 'different fpl language' to the fpl game different considerations have to be taken into account constantly.

That's right I would think. People automatically go for the highest scorer from last season plus Emilio has a great first fixtures so a lot of people go there.

If you look into it further you think 5.5 that's actually quite expensive and then you decide to spend some money elsewhere

You would I agree. But you need 3 forwards you only need one keeper. How many points do you reckon the next best keeper for the opening fixtures will get and how much will they cost?

I love Martinez don't get me wrong. He did very well for me last season and he may well be worth it. But it's also not hard to justify a cheaper keeper to save a little cash

    Any Wolves ITK about?

Is Gibbs White a prospect to be a starter this season? If so isn't he relatively attacking and possibly the best 4.5 about? Good heritage coming from that U17 cup winning side.

Seems to be featuring in preseason but not sure if he's getting the right minutes - ie in the competitive side and not the ones who come on to fill out minutes.

Does the guarantee still stand once Neves is sold? I'm unlikely to start with a 4.5 mid but interested to know what the options are. My guess is that the actual list is going to be a little longer than Gilmour and Brownhill.

Yes, it does. You don't go from a peripheral player one season to a player who was deemed surplus to requirements so was loaned out the next season to the cornerstone of the team the following season.

I'm a Wolves fan and haven't watched pre-season. I have heard and seen on articles that MGW has performed well over preseason and it's clear that Moutinho/Neves pair is past their sell-by-date. He is looking a better bet than Mountinho as he brings energy and goal threat. A signing in midfield will change things but he looks above Otasawie in the pecking order at the moment and can also play in a front 2 potentially. He isn't a safe 4.5M but he has a good chance of forcing his way into the first team after a few games, Lage seems a fan and he looks like he might finally make the grade. MGW is worth trying, he has massive potential vs the rest of the 4.5M.

Personally I would prefer one of the 6.5 mids, or even 5.5m the likes of Trossard, Buendia, ESR, Raphinha even Townsend and use that saving elsewhere.

In saying that Jota could work if you are willing to accept 1 point cameo's. It depends what type of fpl gamer you are.

Is Andrew Omobamidele actually looking like a genuine £4.0m option? Played 90 mins in all 3 of Norwich's preseason matches. Started all of Norwich's last 8 league matches, however they were already promoted at this point so were possibly just giving gametime to fringe players. They also played him in the EFL trophy. It must be said that their cleansheet record when he played was poor, only 3 cleansheets in 11 games.

They have, Kounde. What's so stupid is they sold Tomori who had a blistering season at Milan, and Guehi (sp?) to Palace, and now Zouma is surplus. Surprised Spurs aren't all over Zouma - would definitely be a scoop for Hammers.

You'd expect Spuds to be spending much of the 150m of whatever they get for Kane. I assume the reason they're not negotiating yet is because they're casting the net for his successor as well as a couple of other transfers without wanting to pay inflated prices.

So my latest draft is looking like this. 0itb.

    Sanchez
    TAA, Chilwell, Digne
    Salah, Mahrez, Jota, Raphinha
    Iheanacho, Watkins, Antonio

    (4.0, Shaw, Ait-Nouri, Brownhill)

I think that is well balanced, with a strong defence, but the main issue I see is it will be difficult to get to Bruno or Kane if they start firing.

Jota is very tenuous at this stage.

Chilwell is the interesting one in that squad for me.
Do you expect Chelsea to get off to a flyer despite the difficult enough run until gw7 (excluding Palace and Villa)

I just think Chelsea's defense since Tuchel came in is elite. An elite defense can keep CS against anybody. In the first 6 fixtures, I see 2 relatively easy fixtures, 2 medium and 2 difficult. Difficult being Liverpool and City, who they kept CS against last season.

If Chilwell nails down a run of games at wing back like I think he should, there should be goal and assist potential also.

Good logic to that. It could put you ahead of the curve if it works.

      Really nice

Have been getting tempted by Chilwell myself.

Bit dubious about spreading the Bruno cash so thinly - really tough to get a second premium back,

I don't want a second premium unless it's Kane. With just Salah above 10M you get a real tasty squad.

          Yep sure do.

May change my mind but I'm currently on a cautious double premium - a hedge against Kane move as much as anything and a way of avoiding your TDD WC strategy. The other rationale is that Bruno will be easy to trade down into whichever subprime mid hits form early aside from Son who I intend to start with.

Not comfortable as I don't really want Bruno and it feels very tame.

Mahrez + Jota to Bruno +4.5? And play 4-3-3. But getting Kane in isn't as easy.

          True

But wouldn't mind betting that by week 3 the calculation will be different if Bruno is firing he won't be 12.0.

Yes that is the problem with going with the 'spreading the cash' structure.

If I was to go with this team or similar, I think I'd have to just commit and give up on the idea of getting Bruno until much later on. His run of fixtures from GW5-13 are poor, and he generally doesn't score as well against bigger teams. I'd likely be captaining Salah in most GWs anyway. So I'm hoping Bruno carries in his relatively poor recent form into the start of the season, hope Utd don't get many penalties and if I can get away their first 4 fixtures without too much damage, it should be fine.

Is a player price protected until he has had some minutes in PL?
Let’s say Kane is transferred to City between GW1 and GW2 but only start playing (long holidays) in GW2 under his City shirt. Can he raise in price between GW1 and GW2?

    Thoughts on this team appreciated,
Have 0.5 itb so I have an option of Havertz > mahrez

    Sanchez
    TAA-Shaw-Tierney
    Salah-Raphina-Havertz-Bruno-Buendia
    Antonio-Toney

    Foster-Ayling-Manquillo-Obafemi

Havertz is one I have no seen in many teams. The rest of it is similar to most posters on here.

    Thoughts on this first draft

    Sanchez (Steele)
    TAA Shaw Targett (Ayling 4.0)
    Salah Son Mahrez Dele (4.5)
    Watkins Wilson Antonio

    Thanks!

Wilson is being ignored by many on this site and he could be a decent pick.
Mahrez I have not seen in many sides since most have gone for Sancho or Son at that price. It is risky pick as Pep loves rotation but he seems to have played Mahrez a lot last season. Would you be happy with 2/3 games ratio?
Alli is one I am not sure of at all, how will spurs with no Kane effect him? Also what ideas has Nuno?
Personally, I would prefer a number of 6.5 options ahead of Alli. But if Alli ends up 'in the hole' behind Son you could do very well.
The rest seems similar to teams on here.

We compared notes earlier - almost identical. But switch Davis for Obafemi - he might actually get decent minutes!

Love the midfield look - it'd be much the way I'd go without Bruno very likely.

Seems very ironic the ringmasters of the speculation giving out about the crowds who feed of the speculation. If I was such a journalist I would be more worried if the twitter feed stopped getting attention!

The personnel in question are narcissistic hacks who never graduated from their time at the Echo. The Athletic are the scum of the journalistic earth, who only got into football to deflect questions about their collective singledom.
