What FPL managers can expect from new Spurs midfielder Bryan Gil

We assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) credentials of midfielder Bryan Gil (£6.0m) in our latest Scout Report.

Whilst most of the UK has basked in glorious sunshine this summer, ever-darkening clouds have continued to develop along Tottenham High Road.

The debacle that surrounded Nuno Espirito Santo’s eventual appointment as manager after a list of top European managers turned Tottenham Hotspur down was reminiscent of a cringe Love Island pieing narrative rather than a Premier League “big six” side securing their immediate managerial future.

The second coming of Gareth Bale came and went just when it seemed that the Welsh wizard was finding his groove again towards the end of last season – and we shan’t even broach the Harry Kane (£12.5m) predicament.

In all the gloom, the signing of attacking influence Gil may well offer a much-needed chink of light to Fantasy managers and Spurs faithful alike ahead of the start of a new season.

THE HISTORY

A product of Sevilla’s academy and able to count Barcelona star Ansu Fati as one of his youth team colleagues, Gil debuted for the Andalusian side in August 2019 as an 18-year-old in a home draw against Celta Vigo.

Featuring only once more in a similar half-hour cameo in the league, he was utilised with more frequency during the Europa League group stages, grabbing a single goal before a post-Christmas loan to relegation-doomed Leganés in which he made only four starts.

While Gil suffered another relegation whilst on loan at Eibar last season, he did at least establish himself as a first-team regular.

Four goals, three assists and six yellow cards doesn’t scream FPL gold and at this point, one could reasonably write him off. But in terms of his underlying stats from a Fantasy perspective, Gil offers intrigue at worst and hope at best for managers looking for a cheaper route into the Spurs attack.

UNDERLYING STATS AND SPURS COMPARISONS

The young Spaniard interchanged between left-wing and right inside-forward roles whilst at Eibar last season, with such interchangeability a massive draw in what we see as the modern-day Premier League wide-man.

In 28 La Liga appearances for a side that would eventually finish the campaign propping up the division, he conjured returns of 1.4 shots, 1.8 key passes and 2.4 successful dribbles per game. Whilst not pulling up trees, it does offer some eye-raising comparisons with what looks to be his main competition at Spurs.

The departed Bale aside, it was Lucas Moura (£6.5m) and Steven Bergwijn (£6.0m) that shouldered much of the responsibility in the attacking right position of a 4-2-3-1 last season.

Brazilian Moura disappointed in large parts throughout last season, offering only seven attacking returns in 30 Premier League games, albeit that he featured from the bench more often than not.

Dutch winger Bergwijn fared no better; four attacking returns in 21 appearances.

But it is those underlying stats comparisons that perhaps make the strongest case for the incoming 20-year-old talent.

Moura offered only 0.6 shots, 0.5 key passes and 1.1 successful dribbles per game. Bergwijn tallied 0.7 shots, 0.6 key passes and 1.0 successful dribbles per game. It won’t come as much of a surprise then, that only 28.8% of all chances created by the north Londoners came from the right flank last season.

That being said, only 29.7% originated from the left, with a league-high 41.8% coming from the Kane spearheaded central positions.

Nuno’s arrival

With Nuno’s appointment may come a distinctly different pattern to approach play this coming campaign.

The success the Portuguese had during his time at Wolves was chiefly built upon the width offered by his preferred wing-back system, and in particular, the goal and assist threat of Matt Doherty (£5.0m) – who Nuno conveniently offloaded to Spurs at the beginning of last season – down the right-hand-side.

In fact, throughout the course of the season before last, no team came close to the number of chances that Wolves created from the right-hand side, with just shy of four-in-every-ten coming from that flank. Doherty himself helped himself to four goals and eight Fantasy assists and a total of 167 points from his wide berth, during 2019/20.

There’s a strong argument to be made for deploying the same strategic template at Spurs, even if Nuno has so far preferred a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 hybrid in pre-season. Not only has he inherited quintessential wing-backs in Sergio Reguilón (£5.0m) and the already proven Doherty, deploying a back three in front of Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) may help to steady a side that has seen their goals conceded per game numbers creep to 1.18 (2020/21) and 1.24 (2019/20) from as low as 0.68 in 2016/17.

Further adding to left-footed Gil’s appeal may be how his potential inclusion on the right-hand side of a narrower front three works as a natural fit in implementing a formation characterised by the width offered by marauding wing-backs. Moreover, a propensity to dribble at defences directly in a fashion similar to that which fellow countryman Adama Traore (£6.0m) enjoyed during that 2019/20 season at Wolves and in which new teammate Son Heung-Min (£10.0m) terrorises defences weekly in the Premier League, could reap attacking reward.

Final thoughts

Gil has already been deemed good enough to represent his national side at senior level, featuring in Spain’s World Cup qualifying fixtures against Greece and Georgia back in March and despite not making Luis Enrique’s Euro 2020 squad, the youngster is currently in Japan vying for a medal with Spain’s currently unbeaten Olympics squad. No mean feat for a player that doesn’t turn 21 until next February.

His involvement in the Olympics married with his lack of experience within the Premier League, a new manager and a start to the season that sees Spurs encounter Man City, Chelsea and north London rivals Arsenal within their first six fixtures, firmly underlines his place in the “wait-and-see” column.

But given the winger’s charm as an under-the-radar differential (literally boasting a 0.0% ownership at the time of writing) in a traditional “top six” side that is crying out to add to their attacking avenues outside the over-reliance on Messrs Kane and Son, it may not be long before £6.0m looks a very silly price tag, indeed.

Let’s face it, outside the bulging outputs of Kane and Son, there isn’t much else on offer.  The attacking assets that remain at the club – Dele Alli (£6.5m), Moura and Bergwijn – combined for a total of 165 Fantasy points between them in 2020/21. Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) – despite his three names – is one man who managed the same haul on his own from a £7.0m price point.

A Spanish starlet with the name of a middle-aged accountant from Walsall. Bryan Gil. He may surprise you.

Putting Mo and Bruno as 4th and 5th mids is unusual but you're on one of the template set ups.

Heavy bench and double Liverpool defence sightly unusual but you could simply be ahead of the curve there. Most have less and a 6.5 mid more in midfield in a 3-4-3

Thanks! Makes me feel better about my choices. I went into this team wanting 3 liverpool players. I think they'll perform really well this year.

I've basically taken money out of the ESR slot and upgraded Shaw to Robertson. Who will likely perform better than a 6.5 mid. (I hope).

I feel like many of us (including myself) have blinders on with the mid-price forwards.

There are a wealth of tasty options at 7.5, as well as 6.5 in Tony and obviously DCL and Bamford at 8.

Many of these strikers have had good/decent seasons in the past (Wilson, Antonio, DCL, Bamford) but it was never at this price point. Throw in injury concerns (Wilson, Antonio, Jimi, even DCL) and suddenly you realize that it's not a no-brainer to bring them in as they are no longer 6 or 6.5 million.

Do you really think the 7.5 forwards will outscore or justifiably outscore the likes of Robertson (7 million), Raphina/ Harrison, (6.5, 6) Ruben Dias/Chilwell (6), or even someone (overlooked due to fixtures) like Mason Mount (7.5).

I like the idea of 3 forwards to try to catch the in-form striker out of the gate, but due to the premium midfield options and lack of 7.5-9 price bracket in midfield, too many funds are going to the forwards who I don't think will live up to the 7.5 million price tag. These are mainly all strikers that are typically in the 6.5 million price range.

I agree. The 7.5m-8.0m forward bracket has a lot of points in it, but not a lot of long-term value.

They need a good fixture run to be worth it.

Cheers. I looked up C. Wilson's best scoring season (at 6 million) in which he scored 168 points. 2500 minutes or so but that's what you get with him, being injury prone.

Jack Harrison scored 160 last season. 6 million this year.

I like Watkins, and to a lesser extent Antonio (too injury prone), but are DCL and Bamford going to put up 170+ to make them worth 8 million. Possibly but I have my reservations.

Antonio has never scored over 132 points. I'm all for hopping in/out of that price bracket based on fixtures but you don't want to have all these pre-planned fixtures which will blow up when the season starts. Watkins seems durable but should he keep a place in our starting XI wth his fixtures after GW 3? Possibly not

One you're missing is Jiminez 🙂

He's the most natural premium defender comparison player as someone who regularly just brings in points. Thought Watkins had a very Jim like season last time. Nothing sensational (after the hattie) just regular points

Watkins points were definitely not regular. As someone who owned him for 2/3 of the season, I can confirm that fact for you.

Nope. 6-6.5 mids or 5.5-7 million defenders.

I get the whole 4.5 playing defender vs 4.5 non-playing defender debate but I don't believe the 7.5 strikers have better value than 6-6.5 mids (Harrison, Raph) or 5.5-7 defenders (R James, Digne, Chilwell, Dias, Robbo (many have only TAA)

I likely wasn't clear enough in the original post. I'm referring to the idea of having 3 mid-price strikers up top which I see is very common, including in my drafts.

I'm stating that starting with just 1 or even 2 of the mid-price forwards strengthens the team much better, imo

If you only get 1 or 2 mid priced forwards who do you buy for the other slots? This is not a hard question

Mate I understand you like to play devil's advocate but I don't need to spell it out for you, as you're clearly a seasoned FPL player and I enjoy reading your posts.

I was hoping to get a small discussion going and it was successful. Original post was 40 minutes ago

Thank you everyone for the replies.

                  Ok I will be clear.

"Dont get 7.5 forwards", is a compleyely pointless statement as it is not constructive. It revolves around the idea of not doing something with zero credible alternatives. Presenting problems and not solutions. Writing a long post with limited substance.

Oh, right. I've decided that 4-4-2 is the way to go, with Obafemi as an ideal bench option.

I think the problem with the 4.5 non-playing fwds this year is Covid and the likely need for a better bench than previous seasons.

      Agreed mostly

My take though is the optimal solution there is to pick and hold and not chase fixtures with them - record last season was that they returned steadily but unevenly if you look at fixtures. I had no joy making switches there.

Not convinced that Robbo at an equivalent price at 7.0 will be any better mind - unless you really do hold for 38 weeks and even then it may be close.

Good points. But also think about it this way... is Robertson plus any 5.0m forward you can think of going to outscore one of these 7.5m forwards plus the right 4.5m defender (say, Ben White, Sierralta, Fofana, Lowton, just to name a few options)?
Not saying I disagree with you, just providing another point-of-view.

The big points are in midfield anyway, that's why we don't go for premium strikers. Plus other than Kane, none of the ones over 8.5m look at all attractive.

Cheers for the reply. I understand that debate (as pointed out above) but I feel that's one that's never been universally agreed upon, and it's like opening a can of worms debating that topic.

In your starting XI, a 7m Robbo will likely outscore any of the 7.5 forwards you choose. May one of the 7.5 options outscore Robbo? Of course, but it's hard to choose the right one. I'm all for hopping on/off a 7.5 striker with fixtures but there will likely be times you're forced to use a transfer on the likes of Antonio/Wilson due to injury. Robbo, granted he has a similar season durability wise, is a set and forget.

I do wonder if the likes of Welbeck, Benteke, Toney can match the likes or Antonio, DCL, Wilson in the short term. Not out of the realms of possibility IMO.

I'm more thinking along the lines of 5.5-6 million defenders and 6-6.5 mids, in either a 4-4-2, 5-4-1 etc. There are better value picks in midfield/defence imo in that price bracket

    7. El Presidente
      • 4 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

Well, we have a lot of good options in that price bracket, most of them are going to outscore most of the 6.5-7.5 mids. Don't think it's wise to waste a spot getting Obafemi in tbh, plus the 442 gives you 6 attacking players instead of 7.

The 3-5-2 maybe, with the right combination in midfield.

At the Brentford vs West Ham game, Benrahma just scored a cracker (had to be him!) to put West Ham ahead. Pretty even game though. Not sure how he’s been other pre-season games, but Antonio looks off the pace. Love the new stadium btw… and just being at live footy again!

Agree Antonio looked pretty heavy and slow. It is a pre season game though, the point is to build up sharpness after all.

If Grealish goes to City, is it worth to have him and Foden as kinda set and forget?
You wouldn't have them necessarily playing every GW together, but if you hold onto them long enough, for example 10 GW's, the net score I thing is going to be bigger if you keep them, than to go around and switch between the likes of Pepe, Maddison, Barnes, Sancho, Greenwood, Havertz, Mount etc. hoping that you strike gold with your transfer pick.

I like your way of thinking, but they are 8 million each. Grealish doesn't strike me as a player who's got a real knack for scoring/assisting (although I did own him for much of last season). He'd rather lead the league in fouls drawn than assists.

      1. DIMITRIS
        • 5 Years

I do think that Grealish in City could be underpriced at 8.0. I think that way, because when you bring someone for 100 million pounds, you just have to play him more then other players. Otherwise, why did you spend so much for a rotation player.
I believe Pep is going to give him the same amount of game time as to Sterling. If he gets those minutes, I reckon he'll get at least 10-12 goals and 14-15 assists.

Opinions on Douglas Luiz as 4.5 bench fodder mid? Among the other go-to 4.5 options (Bissouma, Brownhill, Gilmour), he seems to have slightly higher attacking threat, and lower ownership?

Any love for Firpo at 5?

feels a lot sexier than (the admittedly reliable) Coufal, dive-bombing full back in Leed's relentlessly chaotic raiding unit,

with their first choice CB's back in action and Meslier with a year of prem footy under his belt may bag a few cleanies too,

or perhaps I am allowing my allegiance to the white rose to cloud my judgement...

    1. Andy_Social

I have a hunch he's going to be brilliant. I'll just start with Ayling at 0.4 less and maybe switch to Firpo on my WC if he lives up to my expectations.

      1. Malcolm Tucker

woke up this morning and chucked him in my team, felt exciting,

I can see him and Harrison being a devastating unit down that left side,

I think Leeds are in for a big season, be great to see us back in Europe (oh the hope, the hope)

lot of love for Ayling too, his stats suggest he should be more involved, maybe he just needs a haircut.

I've actually tripled with Bamford, Raphinha and Harrison - I don't have the goalkeeper or a defender - would if I could. But I have one concern - will Firpo enhance Harrison, or dominate the left flank to Jack's detriment. If it's the latter, my WC could see Firpo in and Harrison out.

          1. Malcolm Tucker
            • 2 Years

In the same boat, I have Meslier Firpo Raphinha,

did have Harrison in but the concern you raised about Firpo hoovering up some of his potential scared me off to the other interesting midfield options at 6-6.5, currently on Buendia and Dele Alli (I know, I know),

only concern for me is Rodrigo, firm believer that he was brought in to replace Bamford but Bielsa's demanding style saw him take a while to build the required fitness, in that time Paddy didn't put a foot wrong and deserved every start he got,

Rodrigo looks a hell of a player to me, easy on the eye, intelligent and with a sweet finish, the lad is different gravy, I can see him breathing down Paddy's neck if the goals don't come early doors,

If that happens be hard to not to get him in at his price.

Our understanding is that Bowen is injured with a minor foot injury and was not risked for West Ham today. There is no move to Liverpool lined up as we understand.

There goes my differential plan. Worth punt to Benrahma?

      I have a suspicion he'll smash it,

I lived in Dortmund for a while so had the good fortune to see him live quite a few times, and he just is really very good,

there's something about his touch, his movement, his finding it almost comical whenever a defender plucks up the courage to stick a foot in, he's a talent,

impossible to tell how well anyone will bed in but I think it is in his favour that this is effectively a homecoming, it's got the sense for me of that bullied kid from a small town who leaves for a better life and comes back a few years later with a new haircut, a six pack and a fat bank account,

we'll see how that particular movie script plays out, will he beat up his old high-school bully (Man City) and wrap his arms around the old hometown sweetheart (Prem Trophy)?
