Pogba’s creativity, Antonio’s xG, DCL’s threat: The key FPL stats for Gameweek 2

Football is back and we could hardly have asked for a better start from a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) perspective.

Goals were flying in all over the place, so I figured I’d start the week with a good stats dive into the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area.

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

WHICH PLAYERS CAUGHT THE EYE?

In terms of expected goal involvement (xGI), Michail Antonio (£7.5m) was the stand-out performer of the round with a 0.58 higher total than second-placed Christian Norgaard (£5.0m).

However, it is worth noting that Antonio’s non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG) total was just 0.70, and as a result, he ranks eighth in that specific metric.

No player was afforded more big chances (three) than the Hammers’ frontman, but having missed his penalty he may no longer be the designated taker moving forward.

A popular target when the game launched, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) ranks third for non-pen xG (0.94) and no player across all positions took more shots in the box than the Toffees’ striker in Gameweek 1 (five).

Only Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) created more chances than Paul Pogba‘s (£7.6m) five. However, just one of the Frenchman’s five attempted assists was a big chance created and he also fluffed a golden opportunity when put through on goal in the first half.

Adama Traore (£6.0m) really should have got on the scoresheet, too. The pacy winger took four shots in the box and was the biggest xG underperformer (0.81) of the Gameweek. He’s certainly one to monitor if he is going to be used in a similar role by Bruno Lage going forward.

Said Benrahma (6.0m) was a popular pick on the Fantasy Football Scout boards and the Algerian notched an xGI total of 0.51, which does not rank in the top 25 across all positions. He scored from his only shot on target, while the sole chance he created was converted, so he is one to monitor as well.

WHICH PLAYERS NUMBERS ARE CONCERNING?

That’s all for now! We will be delving deeper into this data and more on The FPL Wire tomorrow. All my custom stats tables used in the article can be accessed in the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, and I’ve linked them below for convenience:

always was my preferred going in - no matter how many times i tried other options.

certainly not changing it any time soon.

I would of had Benrahma over Biss
      Lose Tonney for 4.5

Of course. The 3-5-2 allowed me to get Benrahma over Toney 😉

I went 3-4-3 partly because I think I will want kane any two of Antonio/Jimenez/Everton/Wilson. Would rather go for a nailed 7.5 striker then a Jota/city/United
Unsure if I want to go for son now instead of kane

Does it have to be out of those few.

I quietly fancy Lucas Moura myself to take advantage of the kane saga but it isa bit punty.

The safest bet would be Raphinha out of that lot.

Willock mag be another punty option

Yeah, that's a great point. I need to keep telling myself that if Benrahma is actually a must roster player, then I'll still be happy getting him at 6.3 instead of 6.0.

Barnes and Benrahma are both exactly the same players we all thought they were pre GW1 deadline.

If you went Barnes over Benrahma there must have been a reason and 1 gameweek (especially as West Ham played Newcastle ) shouldn’t change anything

        1. Alan Watts
          • 5 Years
          2 years, 8 months ago

          Well, not exactly..

Barnes didn't carry his preseason from into GW1, and owners probably didn't factor in risk of changed formation and Iheanacho starting in 2 up top. Madison possible injury increases this risk

Benrahma did carry preseason form into GW1 and looks a steal at 6.0m

He should have had one certainly. Missed a big chance and tbh didn't even get close to it, he needs to go back to just putting his foot through it

          1. @persecuted_by_mods
              2 years, 8 months ago

His main issue is he could never improve as he was always in and out of the team and in a new position every other week. If he gets faith and stays up there he's simply too powerful and fast for most defenders, keeping my eye on him for sure but wary Neto podence Silva etc lurking

Sometimes a role change and trust can make all the difference, I don't think he's gonna turn into a world beater overnight but can he be value for his fpl price? Its looking intriguing if he stays upfront

Genuinely ignoring city attack all year if they don't sign a striker, yes they won the title last year without one but I don't think they can repeat the trick. Grealish again is a player that would perform better if they had a main striker

            Ings Antonio Toney

            Steele Amartey White Brownhill
            1ft 0.5

So tempting to go after the likes of benrahma and sarr, but going to stay strong. How I free up 1.5m (probably more like 2.0m) to get son the week after is the bigger headache.

I see tsimikas is going up and i wonna knee jerk him in for white but it’s such a waste tbh. 2 FT’s next week could he huge

If you wanted Tsimikas then it was a pretty GW1 decision.

He only has 2 weeks left so complete waste bringing him in now

why are the majority on here so eager to make transfers, especially on a monday after GW1 lmao. what kind of info have u gained from 90 mins or less of a player that makes it absolutely neccessary for u to have them in ur team today?

                  It’s honestly embarrassing

Same very year though. Desperation to get whoever scored points and remove whoever blanked.

Willian last season is the perfect example why it’s madness.

yes it screams kneejerk, i can't emphasise enough how important it is to be patient and wait for as much info as possible. i'm even seeing people bringing in players who aren't even due to rise, it doesn't even make sense!

i get it - people love this game and have spent all preseason making multiple decisions on all sorts of players - then it all stops immediately.
there is an understandable urge to do something.

and also i'm not against anyone making any move right now. what says anyone knows any better?

I agree with ur first line but have to wildly disagree with the second, FF is luck-based so u have to use all the information available where possible to ur advantage as u cannot control what happens post deadline, forcing urself into early hits by making silly transfers the day after GW1 with little to no research n not waiting for more info is a bad idea imo

sure - i don't do it either - and hits i think are dumb.
BUT a regular free transfer at this stage? i think that's entirely reasonable.

i guess i don't like the hostility towards it. let people live a little.

If it's luck based then why bother investing so much time into watching games and looking looking stats? An early transfer can get you ahead of the curve and make the difference for you over your rivals or it can help you claw back if you feel you've made a mistake by not selecting a certain player. A transfer in GW1 or GW38, they all count and can make a difference.

because I can have all the stats I want but the stats can only give me the best idea of who is going to score points, not who will score the points. its all variance and as a result u do need some luck to do well. not sure what ur point is here?

ofc an early transfer can benefit but in the same regard waiting the whole week and getting as much info as possible before making ur transfer can benefit more where possible.

My point is your point was that it was luck based but then you mentioned the importance of delving into stats and facts and how that should give you the best decisions, that's not exactly luck based is it? Yes they can't give you points but you're trying to narrow the gaps which then means luck isn't such a factor.

I agree waiting the week is best, I think a lot of the earliest risers and fallers are impacted mostly by more casual players that just chase last week's points. But maybe for some after so long planning and making up drafts the first chance to have extra info to work off of is too big a temptation to hold off on.

"90 mins or less of a player that makes it absolutely neccessary for u to have them in ur team today?"

Probably more than anyone has gained in the weeks upon weeks of research they do in 'pre-season'

Sone people get things wrong. Sone people sensibly don't pour enormous amounts of energy into pre season (you just just go on twitter and copy the template and save yourself pointless weeks of agonizing), some people just like to try to leap on a player who shows, and yeah, some people make decisions that turn out really dumb. None of this is worse than year after year after year people on here looking down their noses at people wanting to make transfers

For me, some of my more expensive gambles didn't play more than 20 mins, I had no Bruno, so made sense to rectify those problems straight away.
I agree in general, if your player played but just didn't return, then no point being kneejerky. But there are some things you can learn from just 90mins

I agree with what u have wrote to some degree, u can learn some things from 90 mins however it surely takes a lot for those 90 mins to spoil any plans u made pre season? that is what i don't understand for the majority but do for some ofc.

Price rises at this stage are a factor...

A 0.1 increase for a player you want could be equivalent to a hit, a downgrade of another player by 0.5 m or additional transfer

Pre GW1 there is no ‘top 10k’ so for GW1 that is just the average score of the first 10k teams to register.

It’ll be what you want it to be from next gameweek onwards

Top 10k is based on the IDs of people who signed up to the game first and got an ID below 10,000, not the ten thousand highest scores in the game.

no doubt there are heaps that do that - but feels like with the super high scores this week that more of the top are regulars who did well rather than one-week chasers.

i mean i got 117 with no chips and planning for the first 5-6 weeks....if I TC'd Salah I'd be laughing - and I reckon a bunch of folks are like me.

Will Watkins' return lead to more/better chances for Ings, even if Watkins himself will "steal" some potential points? As one of the articles noted, Ings was so isolated and had no shots in GW1.

depends on the system I guess. I'm honestly not sure how they are going to fit in Traore, Bailey, Buendia, Watkins & Ings so I don't really know how it will affect him

I have made one transfer, Tsimakis (spelling) for Chilwell. Could not go wrong with a 4.0 for free.

I could do Harverts to Pogba but no point. Already have Bruno lol.

You can go wrong in the sense it’s cost you a transfer to get him in and
It’ll cost you another transfer to get him out in 2 weeks time.

But he is a good option for next 2 weeks

Nah, the fact that Chilli was not even subbed in, 4.0 gaining me 2mil to use elsewhere with a chance of him keeping on playing for weeks to come, performance dependant is a no brainer. Klopp has his way with players...

Honestly I would have kept Chilwell, I'd say he'll play the next two and will have Lukaku there now to give him a bigger target when making his usual breaks down the line

Hope it works out for you though. Tsimikas is still a great option it's just using the transfer to get him in and then one to get rid in a few weeks might leave you a bit stuck once or twice for other necessary moves

Chilwell is working his way back into fitness after a short preseason - he is CLEARLY the preferred player in his position.

This move seems hilarious to me - hope it works out for ya!

What are peoples thoughts on Dennis?

Good enough to play every week in a 343 or try and get Sarr in a 352?

Changed to a 3-4-3 at the last minute and ended up with 91 pts but I reckon 3-5-2 is the way forward.

Not sure what to do this week.

                    TAA, Coufal, Shaw, (Amartey, Manquillo)
                    Salah, Fernandes, Barnes, Gundog, (Gilmore)
                    Ings, Antonio, Toney

Will Varane be in the XI this weekend?

Also regarding the Spurs 4.5's, who is most likely to retain a place in the XI? Nuno seemed very pleased with Tanganga, he was outstanding. Dier or Sanchez to give way to Romero?

if I bench gundo I've got dunk coming in which is pretty good but if he's confirmed out in the next couple of days I'm guessing he'll drop in price by the deadline and I'll be forced into the move. Instead of moving to someone like Greenwood I could downgrade to Gilmour and play dunk and then next week upgrade my 4.5 forward to DCL? (got .5 in the kitty)

Myth or Factual. Notice that a lot of players refuse to Captain a player playing first game of the day. Is this bias based on the 12:30 game having a lower goal total than the rest? Asking regarding probability of putting the "C" on Salah this Saturday. How many just avoid putting the "C" on the first game. Personally, even though I have to be awake by 4:30 A.M. to watch game, I go with who I think is best regardless of start time.

He bagged a hat trick vs Bournemouth at 12.30 a couple of seasons ago. Utd vs Leeds kicked off at 12.30 and Bruno scored 3. It’s more psychological than anything, with people not wanting to have to go through the rest of the games knowing their captain has blanked. Players bodies aren’t as used to eating earlier, preparing earlier, playing earlier etc so you do get some tepid early games but I wouldn’t let that sway your decision.

Grealish will have something to say about KDB's playing pisition..

                            *position*

Also, KDB has become very fragile, keeps on picking up injuries on a constant basis...

who knows, haven't played together yet. can't see him negatively affecting Kevin tho, grealish knows who is the main man.

Kevin could be reverted back to pep roulette DM. You cannot expect Grealish to play that position which Pep has got KDB to learn...

Curious if someone knows this, how many times has the average score been higher last season than this gameweek? My guess wouldn't be more than 5

Is Gundo > Lucas Moura a bad idea?

Son means a hit and removing Barnes to fund.

                            Son > Barnes.

                            Moura hit and miss.

he and Jesus are the only strikers in the team..so guess he will start again against a weak team.

Yes, I would give it another week or two. He was very lively, just didnt get much service

Sky reporting Barca interest in Aubameyang. Maybe those rumours about his and Lacazette's "illnesses" being made up were right
