Scoutcast #383 – Manchester United players among top Gameweek 2 bandwagons

Joe, Seb and Andy help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers prepare for Gameweek 2 and reveal their teams.

Already there have been significant price rises and transfer activity, even though the dust from Gameweek 1 has barely settled. But are these emerging bandwagons justified? Or will FPL managers regret making moves so early?

Our Scoutcast trio look at the key assets to generate interest, with Manchester United’s points-hauling maestros topping the bill.

Red Devils fan Andy leads the crew in a chat about the merits of hat-trick hero Bruno Fernandes (£12.1m) as Gameweek 2 captain, the sustainability of Paul Pogba (£7.6m)’s creativity and where attacker Mason Greenwood (£7.5m) fits in as other strikers start returning from injury and rest.

Seb takes a look at the biggest underachievers and overachievers according to the statistics. This includes a focus on whether Manchester City’s stars showed enough threat against Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 1 to put Norwich City to the sword this weekend.

In true dullard style, Joe considers the unfashionable scorers in the season-opening set of fixtures to find out if any could be in vogue soon.

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

This is a theme Joe carries on into the team’s differential discussion with a cheap goalkeeper firmly in his sights. Thankfully, Andy and Seb recommend more exciting, attacking options to give balance.

There are the next four fixtures to frisk, too, with Brentford emerging as having the kindest run.

Elsewhere, Joe grapples with the show’s eye-catching new graphics with mixed results, accidentally transferring Liverpool players to Manchester United at one point.

Seb, Joe and Andy’s Gameweek 1 performances are looked at, with one of them joining the exclusive ‘100 club’.

There are teams and captaincy decisions to reveal and also a chance to catch up on the Scoutcast’s management of a veteran Fantasy manager’s side, who has had to dip out of this campaign for mental health reasons. With a top 100 finish last season, the pressure is truly on to maintain his strong record.

Certainly should be, I think Newcastle were were hoping to play him last Sunday and only didn't because he was registered too late on Friday when the deal was done

Yeah - obviously it has been broken up over two seasons and him not being available for a game last season against his parent club and being fully benched in a game against Burnley but he has scored in each of the 7 PL games he has played in

Jota a small problem. Does coming off early mean he was poor or he was rested to start this week. Hard to say.

Definitely keep this week as even 30mins vs Burnley could be gold, but likely get rid for Chelsea.

BUT then again if the news is Salah and Firmino will miss games due to isolation then he is a must have again.

      It's all wait and see....

Yep. I was battling with myself not to get in Pogba for the price rise, but glad I held now. My reasoning for Pogba in was a goal next weekend and he could be close to 8m in no time, but it's just as likely Pogba has a totally anonymous game as is his nature.

Even if Pog scores and rises again, that is not predictive of future returns. Greenwood is the United option in that range with more of an FPL track record (already). But really it's all a wait and see in this price range.

              • 8 Years

Yes, but I'm planning an early wildcard. So would get Pogba in, hope he gets through 4gws in decent fashion then cash in. I don't like him as a fantasy asset but was tempted by the investment opportunity

So with Jota, I think he's always been good value - even off the bench he has a great record. But the question was would it be worth the gamble to get him over Tsimikas.

If you've gone with him, I think you should stick with him especially as Robertson is on his way back (perhaps for Chelsea if he's running already).

        1. TheTinman
          • 8 Years
          2 years, 8 months ago

Yes I went for Jota over Tsimi. I compounded it by captaining him too.

Was hoping for a brace and possibly Norwich nick a goal (which they should have).

An early season risk to get ahead of template, but in the end I only missed out on 9pts from not captaining Salah.

Yeah really enjoyable thank you. You know when every player you consider but don’t get scores? Well the opposite happens say bar having Gundo over Greenwood so it was nice to get off to a flyer as I haven’t really paid any attention to football for a couple of years. VAR kinda sucked the life out of me. But the Euros and that Brentford game has really brought this sport back in to my life so I couldn’t be happier.

If LEI switch to a back 3 and 2 up top then potentially he could make way. LEI only have Amartey, Soy and Vestergaard CBs available and after Amartey poor performance in the last game I think he will stick with a back 4

There was and still is with Daka and Nacho lurking. But he is still a quality player so I think it's unlikely.

Can he play on the RW?

        Vardy Iheanacho Barnes

Depending on how the game goes, I think it's more likely he's taken off early than benched.

I'd say there's a greater chance of a benching against Norwich as he may opt for a different formation with two forwards in the 'easier' games.

How useful are bookmakers odd in FPL and what do they actually reflect?

      In other words are they:

      A) A reflection of what they think the probability of an outcome is?

      Or

      B) A reflection of what they think their punters think the probability of an outcome is?

I would have thought the latter would make more sense from their perspective, as their job isn't to be right but rather to make money off people who are trying to be right. In which case the logical thing to do is to analyse where people are likely to place their money and set the odds accordingly so that they make money over the medium run regardless of who wins, rather than the more difficult task of trying to make money by setting odds that accurately reflect the probabilty of an outcome.

In which case the bookies odds would be more about the hivemind sentiment of punters than a deep statsicial prediction by bookmakers? But then the market would probably react accordingly and shift those odds towards a probable outcome regardless? How efficient is the market?

Basically I'm trying to get a grasp of how useful a tool they actually are in terms of FPL. When I see someone post that (according to the bookmakers) Salah has a 60% chance of scoring say, is that a reflection of those bookmakers' actual assessment of his chances of scoring? Or is it a reflection of their asessment of his chances of scoring tweaked massively to account for the huge numbers of people they know will back Mo Salah.

If anyone has any insight into this I would appreciate it. I've never really used bookies' odds for FPL decisions and I'm trying to understand how they function so I can maybe take more account of them from now on.

I am not a bookie or actuary or anything. But to me the odds reflect what the punters think. The general consensus. It is never the probability of it happen. In pure probability terms if I remember my simple maths from school. Every team has an equal chance of winning the league at the start of season.
Similar to winning fpl, everyone starts off from zero.
Whether they are 'likely' to do it is another question.

Plus the bookies never true odds they always have an edge on the punters. They try and make punters place bets on teams to make sure the bookmaker comes out with more money regardless of the result. So they are constantly adjusting the odds.

Like fpl there is the 'general consensus' of casuals who go for the obvious. While the shrewd punters look for value where they think the bookies have got it wrong. Because of injury form or based on a recent head to head.

Short answer bookies odds are what punters think would happen minus the bookies edge. It is not how likely a result will happen in the future.

It's based on a probability - I wouldn't take it as an absolute probability because, of course, the bookies want to make money. But if they're offering (say) Evens on Salah scoring and 6/5 against on Bruno scoring then you can't really equate that to the chances of Salah scoring being 50%, but you can assume that they think Salah is more likely to score than Bruno. If that makes sense.

Linking to reply below - I am an actuary but that doesn’t help too much here. Just have to look at England odds every international tournament to see that B must play a huge component.

More generally my question would be is it actually useful data? I could see it being most relevant in captaincy decisions but if the decision was close the odds probably will be too and any slight difference is spurious enough to not help the decision. If Salah is down as 57% to score and Bruno 54% I personally wouldn’t see using this as any sort of edge. Odds don’t given you any sense of variance, plus would have to combine with clean sheet / assist odds plus likelihood of bps from the players which no odds will really inform.

Bottom line - If the odds had a clear pattern useful enough to inform decisions an engaged fpl manager probably already knows it. Using odds to inform marginal decisions I would say is spurious given all relevant factors. If you enjoy the process of looking up the odds go for it absolutely but I wouldn’t expect an edge from it.

To explain my engaged manager point. Bruno vs City and Salah vs Norwich will likely have quite different odds - but you knew that before you looked up the odds so haven’t come out with any new information.

Same dilemma and concluded to save transfer. We knew he would only get 60/70 mins, BR mentioned this in the pressers before the deadline. With Daka and Nacho on the bench, there is always the uncertainty BR will change formation in the 2nd half depending on how the game is going. He is still a starter imo. Having 2FTs with another GWs worth of info seems to be the better option for me.

i was thinking about that game. I have two west ham and three Leicester. I plan benching one of the defensive from each team - Schmeichel and Coufal.
I have a feeling that Leicester could get the away win but West Ham will score likely Antonio.
I watched the whole Leicester v Wolves game because I had the three Leicester lads and wanted to see how Wolves and Jimenez looked.

However, the Leicester defence will be superb when Vestergaard comes in for Amartey, Schmeichel was top notch the last day (still benching him for Sanchez).
Vardy was superb against Wolves I fancy him to score against West Ham. I am not sure what to make of Barnes he got in great positions against Wolves but he chose the wrong option.

I assume Arsenal are going to sign a striker, with Lacazette and Aubameyang unfavored by Arteta? Or am I reading too much into it?
It is tough call Saka could be great if Arsenal have a flying striker - nice fixtures gw4 ish. Sarr is extremely attacking and has nice fixtures after a couple of gameweeks.

It basically depends how much do you trust Arsenal going forwards?
You could get Sarr then get ESR in a few gameweeks instead and have both to cover yourself.

I think there's opportunity there if you happen to pick the right City player. But there's also not that much risk involved if you go without as City options are so spread that no one City player hauling will kill you. Salah and Bruno are going to massively dominate in terms of captaincy too, so the risk you're exposed to by going without is greatly reduced.

I would love to have a decent asset from City for this game but I dont see it as urgent or needing to waste my free transfer. As ever I have no idea on the starting line up, Gundo is probably injured, Torres or Jesus, has Jack settled in yet etc etc. I would though be very worried if the ownerships were enormous but its only Jack at 22.5% that would materially affect my ranking if he exploded. A risk I will take for this gamweek I think.

Not happy to go without but can't own everyone right. I'm too conservative to go for any of their fringe players. Unless it's Ederson, Dias, KDB and Gundogan you are risking your player being benched. I can't play with that sort of stress : D

I think a lot of people will do that. I'm sticking with Mo

Its a fair shout. Sticking with Salah though given its 50/50 who will do best and managing risk given majority will captain Mo.
