What the FA Cup results and draw mean for FPL Gameweeks 27 and 30

We’re starting to get a better picture of the situation in Gameweeks 27 and 30 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after the latest FA Cup results and draw.

GAMEWEEK 30

Three scheduled Premier League fixtures will definitely go ahead in Blank Gameweek 30: Arsenal v Aston Villa, Leicester City v Brentford and Wolverhampton Wanderers v Leeds United.

As many as seven league matches could be postponed because of the clash with the FA Cup quarter-finals, however, after the fifth-round draw kept apart many of the top-flight teams.

The full Blank Gameweek 30 picture will be known ahead of Gameweek 28.

GAMEWEEK 27

After the weekend’s cup results, a maximum of three matches could potentially be added to Gameweek 27 to make it a ‘double’ (or a ‘single’ for Leicester).

Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool will now definitely blank in Gameweek 27.

The list of outstanding fixtures that could fall here are:

  • Burnley v Leicester City
  • Leeds United v Aston Villa
  • Aston Villa v Burnley
  • Wolves v Watford

Only Leeds v Aston Villa of that foursome was scheduled to be televised (on Amazon), so it could be that this fixture is saved for a later date to avoid a clash with the FA Cup matches on TV.

The most urgent game that needs rescheduling is Burnley v Leicester, with the Foxes having four outstanding fixtures but otherwise having no free midweeks until Gameweek 33 *if* they continue to progress in Europe.

Leicester’s elimination does, at least, majorly lower the possibility of a Triple Gameweek for Brendan Rodgers’ side, as they should have enough free windows to fulfill their fixtures.

Because it's the most pressure and he's the most comfortable taker. They lost by 2 it doesn't matter if he scored or not.

You put your best takers first to make sure it goes to the last one. Ego at the expense of the team.

No that's not how strategy is done is pens. It's very common the best taker goes last. If they missed a low pressure penalty at the start there's no chance they're scoring a high pressure pen at the end. It doesn't matter what order you score or miss, it matters who shoulders the pressure.

That's how it should be done by a good coach who can stand up against the player's egos. That's how the majority of shoot outs I have seen have worked. Or at least, in the first 3 do it definitely gets that far.

I understand it, but it still doesn't make the most sense. The best strategy is your best 5 takers going 1 2 3 4 5.

As with each miss, the chance of someone further down the order being able to even take their penalty is reduced.

                  2 years, 3 months ago

Senegal scored 4, Egypt scored 2. Salah could go first and they still only score 3 and lose. Putting your best player first is only relevant if you expect the other team to miss at the start and have weaker takers towards the back, which is silly because the conversion rate is way above 50%. Penalties are all about pressure, and the further to the back you are the more pressure there is. If you put weaker takers on higher pressure shots they're far less likely to score and your average total scored out of 5 will go down.

I don't like to refer to experts but maybe you'll take it from him, Danny Murphy said today that your best taker should go 1st or 4th. It is rarely over after 3, so 4th is pressure and 1st is a good start.

                  • 9 Years
                  2 years, 3 months ago

Why would you not like to refer to experts? Experts should absolutely be referred to for anything.

It's not black and white enough for any kind of consensus though, far too many variables and luck involved. Italy for example put Jorginho, the designated taker, 5th. Salah and Mane are both the designated takers and were 5th. Egypt won the round of 16 and semis with that order. There are plenty of other examples of experts making that decision. Believe it or not, the experts make most of the decisions not the players.

I understand some value in a good start to attempt to alleviate pressure on others if you're able to get ahead. In the event you don't get ahead though you're far worse off. The main advantage of having best takers at the start would be a smash and grab scenario where you knock the other team out fast, but again that relies on them missing multiple penalties which is statistically unfavourable. 4th doesn't make sense, unless you have an actual explanation, because if he scores the guy you just moved to 5th is just more likely to miss than he would have been at 4th so the only benefit would be if you're far enough ahead that the other team doesn't get to use their 5th.

At the end of the day it's coming down to pretty fine margins on statistics that are largely undeterminable.

Yes... It's the most pressure so you need your most relaxed player on it. It doesn't matter if he goes first and then the other two missed the 4th and 5th. If they didn't score an early one there's no way they score a late one with more on the line.

With hindsight people always think they felt stronger when they were correct... Psychology.

Definitely. This one I actually voiced my opinion to friends though which I don't normally do. It's silly to explain.

Bets were easy on this game,

Simple things like Salah 1+ shots on target, same with Mane.

I stuck that on 30secs before his penalty lol.

Lol see this one I have little faith in. Spain are improving again. Germany and France always strong. England always strong on paper. Italy (my team) have proven they have a chance. I couldn't pick a clear favourite between them.

Well….given Italy have not qualified yet now is the time to bet on them if you fancy the best odds!!

I think the heat plays a factor myself so perhaps we get a team outside of Europe this time round?

If they make it through Canada would be my ‘hope’ team (as denmark were in euros until they met my ‘actual ’ team wales) but it will be too hot.

Maybe the heat gets Argentina to a final
          Again?

Haha I'm actually Canadian through my parents so I'm really excited Canada have qualified, undefeated as well! Of course you're right I wasn't even thinking about the likes on Brazil.
