FPL Hall of Fame: Analysing the world’s best Fantasy managers

Our Hall of Fame was given a refresh at the end of 2021/22, allowing us to see how the list of best-performing Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have been affected by last season’s points.

For the uninitiated, the Hall of Fame is a ranking system applied to everyone who takes part in either of our FPL leagues. Managers’ past and present performances are then tracked to give a Hall of Fame (HoF) rating.

The Live version of our Hall of Fame can only be viewed by Premium Members but everyone can access the Career Hall of Fame by clicking here.

Further information on the Hall of Fame is included at the bottom of this article, but alternatively, you can view this movie to listen to Mark Sutherns and Rate My Team’s Chris Atkinson discuss the feature.

Following our overview of the top 10 FPL managers, we now turn our attention to how they performed in 2021/22, from chip strategy to captaincy.

HALL OF FAME FAQ

How is my rating calculated?
The “HoF Rating” is based on your points scores from previous FPL seasons, with the latest season weighted the heaviest and each corresponding season weighted at roughly 80% that of the previous season. So, in other words, those who performed best in 2021/22 will receive a bigger HoF Rating boost from those who did best in 2007/08. The “HoF Ranking” even allows for those with missing years, adapting the formula accordingly to allow rookies to rank alongside the veterans of FPL.

How do I join the Hall of Fame?
Simply sign up to our leagues next season, either the Fantasy Football Scout league or, if you’re a member, the Fantasy Football Scout Members’ league – the code for the latter will be available on the dashboard of the Members’ Area after launch.

How do I find myself in the Hall of Fame?
The search box at the top of the ranking tables allows you to search by surname or by FPL ID.

What if I don’t want to be listed?
Either notify us via support@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk or simply leave the relevant Fantasy Football Scout FPL league and you’ll be removed on the next update.

When does the Hall of Fame get updated?
The Career table is available to all and is updated at the end of each season to display the latest rankings. The Live version, accessible only to Members, is updated sporadically throughout the season to reflect the scores of the current campaign.

Bissouma going to Spurs for £25m being reported today.

Spurs signing our targets, whilst Arsenal sign nobodies from Brazil for £3m.

Arteta and Edu on holiday pissing around doing nothing. I hate the way we’re run.

The same journalist reported that Lautaro Martinez was a ‘done deal’ to Spurs last Summer. Also, Bissouma has an ongoing sexual assault claim that’s yet to go to Court…

That deal was pretty much done only for Chelsea to pay through the nose for Lukaku meaning they didn't have to sell Martinez any more.

Yeah The Times have a high threshold of evidence before reporting, so it's looking like Bissouma to Spurs is happening, unless another club matches the £25m. Only a year left on his contract, probably why it's such a good price. I'd be surprised if more aren't interested.

Big hole to fill for Brighton. xPts for Brighton players gets a debuff.

Bissouma and Eriksen backed up by Hodjberg and Bentacaur makes a pretty tasty midfield.

Yep Eriksen in particular would be very interesting from FPL perspective as he won't get a premium price, but could provide premium pts!

Doubt he will be a starter in that team. More like a backup and likely to be utilised as sub and in easy cup games.

Dunno. I can see Conte changing formation and going 2 up top with Eriksen in an AMC creative role and Bissouma a DMC enforcer, with Ben or Hoj as the MC (if you'll forgive the FM terminology)

That doesn't leave any room for Kulusevski, though. Maybe he will go 4-2-3-1? I don't know how married to the 3-at-the-back system he is.

I assume he'd be challenging Kulu for a place as a wide creative man. Used to play that role well for Spurs.

Hoping he goes to United and plays RW. I think he'd walk straight into that position, given Greenwood's not available. Add better balance to the team too. The side would often play with 3 goalscorers on the pitch at once, and they were struggling to create against lower blocks.

Think Arsenal have skipped on from needing Bissouma, they're further along the development path than expected, think Tielemans will be a much more appropriate signing for their football.

Bissouma would be a good signing for Spurs tho.

Agreed - I've done some hypothetical tinkering and it's almost impossible to fit him in if you want big at the back, Son, Haaland etc. Diaz at 4m cheaper would make it possible though. Or you could have Salah but then you'd have to scrimp on your defence, which judging by last season would be a bad idea. Decisions, decisions...

Darwin's movement could open up space for Salah. Nunez tends to drift into the left halfspace, even when starting centrally.

Salah looked leggy after AFCON, so a rest may revive him. And we all saw what he did at the start of last season... he was looking like the best player in the world. I wouldn't underestimate him.

City and Liverpool are so dominant in this league, that having the primary goalscorer from each would be a very comfy blanket, and give great captain options.

Could see this opposite. Nunez pulling left means he combines with Diaz. Trent will send crosses into him. Salah could be left relatively isolated.

If Liverpool had a game tomorrow, I could see Nunez tripping over Diaz's feet on the left-of-centre. I'm sure Klopp will show them how to position themselves optimally, but whether it will be perfected before the season gets underway is the question.

From the limited amount I've seen of Diaz, he tends to dribble the ball into deeper positions, he doesn't seem that penetrative. I can see him underlapping Nunez often.

Who knows, we'll have to check it out in pre-season.

You create space by moving away from an area. You condense it by moving towards it.

So to help a teammate you, should move away from them. Cruyff explains it here: https://youtu.be/7NZ0byEyeOA?t=20

Nunez led the way among forwards in the ‘Big Five’ European leagues (and the equivalent Portuguese competition) for goals per minute (76), seeing off players you might just have heard of, like Erling Haaland (87), Robert Lewandowski (84) and some bloke called Karim Benzema (96).

It's certainly impressive considering he's at a team that hasn't exactly been challenging for titles this season, but similarly despite the "Bundesliga tax" applied to a lot of players, the Primeira Liga is still a bit of a ways off of the top 5 European leagues so that needs to be taken into context. That being said, on the whole I think players from there generally tend to settle in the PL fairly well and quickly.

Eye-watering conversation rate too, vastly outperforming his xG.

You'd expect a regression, but even a sizeable one would still leave him as one of the most clinical players in the world.

      Gutted Liverpool got him.

Spurs adding some well-needed depth to their squad while also signing players that will improve the side for such low sums. To think that if they sign Eriksen next they will have signed 4 players of the quality and experience of him along with Forster, Perisic and Bissouma for only £25m so far is some impressive work.

In FPL? It would have to be Kulu or Eriksen, Kulu would be preferred you'd imagine. My concern with the possibility of Eriksen joining would be the impact on Son. Having someone there like Eriksen can only be good for the prospects of the Spurs forward line but he'd surely take over setpieces from Son so it's one less avenue for points for him. That being said Son is a pretty bad setpiece taker anyway (although he still manages to get assists from some)

My take is different. I think Kulu would be dropped to accommodate Eriksen in a changed formation. I was tending towards a Son-Kulu combo, but if Eriksen joins, Son-Eriksen would be an attractive proposition (and a wingback as a third spud).

It’s been reported that a pet project of Arsene Wenger’s, the kick-in, was tabled as a potential replacement to the throw-in at the Ifab general meeting yesterday. BBC reporting no plans as yet to trial the kick-in, with other channels saying trials are in the works with the Dutch Eerstedivisie interested in giving them a go…

Wenger reckons kick-ins will make football ‘more spectacular and quicker’, and the stat accompanying the Guardian’s reporting on his kick-ins, that the average first- and second-tier football match sees fewer than 60 minutes of active play, would seem to lend credence to the idea.

But do we truly suffer for a lack of spectacle and ‘quickness’ in our football? Is the mercurial ebb and flow of football begging to be traded for the freneticism of an ice hockey game? Or does this latest proposal spell, dare we say it, #wengerout?

Kick ins will create more time wasting in my opinion. Look at how long keepers take for a goal kick already at times, even when not wasting time. If multiball is in place at every game, and they set a time limit for the kick in, then maybe it could work but how that time limit is managed is another thing.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

I read that Wenger's proposal includes a 6-second timer limit to take the kick in. Not saying it will be observed any differently to the goalkeeper's time limit, but the issue is covered.

        1. Boly Would
          • 7 Years

Is there still an official time limit rule imposed on keepers? They seem to keep the ball in hand for 20+ seconds and for me that is a bigger problem to address than replacing throw ins with kick ins (which I think is a dreadful idea).

I think a stop-clock should be implemented for injuries and substitutions, and do away with injury time, if anything.

Yes, the kick ins would be on a very short shot clock . I'm not sure how you enforce the shot clock if the ball is booted out of the ground though, or into the crowd and the fans keep hold of it, in order to give you time to get your CBs in the box.

    2. Nate(U)dog(ie)

I feel like Wenger has taken a considerable turn since joining FIFA. Perhaps I just don't know enough about the man but he wouldn't be the first if it is the case. I'm not going to immediately jump on it and say it's terrible but you might as well just call a throw-in a free kick then, and I'm not so sure I think a defending team deserves to have the opposition get that sort of an opportunity (especially if they have someone like a TAA or an Eriksen) just because they've cleared a cross or pass. If you want to fix the time-loss factor then focus on stopping the clock instead of trying to change every little thing that isn't broken.

          • 11 Years

I think the idea is they'd have 5 or 6 seconds to restart play. That's not enough to line up a free kick unless it's like Trent's initiative over that corner Origi scored from in the CL final.

Semi final I think you mean. That's the one I was thinking of earlier, that's the yardstick for a kick in that doesn't leave the ground and is without a run up.

I'm open to changing the rules of football but I don't really like this solution much. Throw-ins are a big part of the game and also make corners more valuable. Otherwise the ball being hooved out to the sides would be just as if not more rewarding than getting a corner.

I prefer having 30 min halves with a stopped clock personally. The amount of time wasting is ridiculous and games really should have like 15 mins of extra time if we add up all the time the ball is considered inactive.

Why? The game would last just as long once all the stoppages are factored in. Ads during the game are an inevitability as well and with a stopped clock it makes it easier to do that.

Time wasting is about breaking up the rhythm of the opposition as much as trying to make the game shorter also. If you just stop the clock when the ball goes out, I don't actually see too much changing, other than the whole time thing being more transparent.

It could be a rule that a kick in is 'along the ground' to stop Eriksson and the like making too much use of it. Besides, you have a restricted run up for a proper free kick at the edge of the pitch.

I think the stop clock should just be for subs and injuries. You're right that not much changes in the sense that players will still go down or walk off slowly to break up opponents rhythm, but at least then we get a more accurate length of 'stoppage time' with the ball in play. Currently it feels like subs and injuries could stop play for 10 minutes in total, yet they only add 4 on at the end - it just doesn't seem reflective of the actual stoppages.

You could argue though that's the ref being shite though, rather than something being fundamentally wrong with the rules of the game. Maybe take the stoppage time out of the refs hands and give it to an assigned timekeeper?

It's across the board though - can't be EVERY referee. The average the ball's in play across Europe is 55 minutes. Definitely scope for improvement without resorting to gimmicks.

I think there's a lot of ideas, some would probably end up working, some probably will not. You never know for sure until you try them. - I can't see why several things can't be trialled seperately in various different leagues.

I agree, it doesn't need a drastic overhaul and nor is it a one size fits all solution. Break down the issues and address them individually, then trial some alternatives. The one I really hate is the time goalkeepers take with the ball in their hands, and the drop to the floor when taking a catch.

I think they should just put the barriers up.
Otherwise, maybe they could bank the sides of the pitch like in Rocket League.
Or the edges of the pitch are the edges of a cliff. If they lose the ball, they don't get another one and they just have to come to an agreement or invent a new sport.
I would also like to see knee-ins.

I don't know any of these Leeds incomers, but they're getting their business done briskly and early, which is a good sign. Think I'll revise my prediction and have them survive over Forest after all (what with Forest about to lose their best player last season to Spurs). Probably finish above an Eriksen-less 2nd season Brentford too.

From what I've read they've been looking to sign Roca for a couple of seasons now. Not really sure at all about Leeds either way, Marsch never really got them plus in any particular style coming in so late and needing to simply get them to stop haemorraghing goals firstly and then just get points at any cost. Improvements are needed for sure there but it'll be a job getting them to gel. I agree about Brentford though, I've seen a lot thinking they'll have a good season but their upturn after Eriksen began starting games can't be ignored. Will have to see who they bring in but I think they were at risk of dropping near a relegation battle before that point.

Honestly think Ten Hag might be gone by October. United's summer business a total mess again, going all in for FDJ when he's not the sort of player we need and it could easily all fall apart and leave us with no other deals done.

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
          1 year, 10 months ago

Transfer window has only just opened tbf and FDJ is definitely what Man Utd need- a quality player in midfield hasn't been signed since Carrick, Pogba is the only one and it didn't go too well admittedly but him and FDJ are different types of player

That'd be super dumb of the United board. United need to give time to Ten Hag. He seems like the type to be able to turn things around unlike Moyes, Van Gaal, Mourinho, and Ole. Even Pep and Klopp didn't do well in their first few seasons here.

My first thoughts were wtf why haven't we signed anyone.. but then I realised

First season and Ten Hag has not even met the players and it's difficult for him to assess anything without meeting them..right?

We'll see more progress in the next month imo

Coming to FDJ. He's clearly the player we need. A player who can progress the ball from defence to attack. (He is Pogba's replacement)

Agree we need a lone DM too, which I am sure he will eventually sign one.

He's going to deploy a double pivot. FDJ is an important piece in that

Man Utd's problems all seem relatively obvious to solve:

          1) Buy a DM (why aren't they fighting for Bissouma, Phillips, and Rice)
          2) Get rid of Jones, Lingard, Pogba, Ronaldo, Martial and Cavani
          3) Drop the defensive line deeper
          4) Play 4-2-3-1 (assuming Greenwood is back and not guilty)

          De Gea
          Dalot Varane Maguire Shaw
          McTominay Bissouma*
          Greenwood Fernandes Sancho
          Rashford

yeah think so. Maybe 9-9.5. Should be striker. He is more central.

NZ have been really unlucky. A questionable disallowed goal, a bit harsh straight red. Both times VAR

If England had 10 Reece James' they'd would win the World Cup.

        Complete player.
