FPL transfers: The latest new Premier League signings assessed

Our latest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfer round-up looks at some more moves from the last fortnight.

The most significant players will be the subject of their own dedicated Scout Report but all the others will feature in regular round-ups over pre-season, continuing with this one.

You’ll find all the major deals on our dedicated Transfers page, while you can get a club-by-club guide to the key moves via our comprehensive Pre-Season tab.

Our sister website, Fantasy Football Community, also has a daily round-up of the latest transfer rumours.

You can find more articles on the likes of Erling Haaland, Gabriel Jesus and Ivan Perisic in our Scout Reports section.

FPL TRANSFER ROUND-UP

Lisandro Martinez (Ajax to Manchester United, £57m)

Following the arrivals of Tyrell Malacia (£4.5m) and Christian Eriksen (£6.5m) is centre-back Lisandro Martinez, who has swapped Ajax for Manchester United. Erik ten Hag knows and trusts him well enough to spend big, offering versatility at both left-back and defensive midfield.

Yet Martinez is predominantly a centre-back. Some onlookers have raised eyebrows at his 5ft 9in height and how it will adapt to the Premier League but his ‘Butcher of Amsterdam’ nickname suggests fearless aggression that will cope just fine.

“We Argentines do everything with passion – and when I go out on the pitch I fight for every ball. When I step onto the pitch, I think back on the times I couldn’t even buy shoes. This is why we are so combative. Argentinians kill to win. If I have to step over dead bodies, I do it.” – Lisandro Martinez

He makes up for his height by having great awareness and a wonderful range of passing, something which will likely endanger the starting spot of either Harry Maguire (£5.0m) or Raphael Varane (£5.0m).

He’s predominantly left-sided, too, which would seemingly further threaten Maguire’s spot, but ten Hag has given the much-maligned England international some hope by switching him to the right in pre-season.

FPL managers may prefer the more attacking £4.5m Diogo Dalot option at full-back, should he emerge as ten Hag’s first choice.

Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli to Chelsea, £34m)

After years of being linked with a major move away from Napoli, 31-year-old Kalidou Koulibaly (£5.5m) has finally departed for the Premier League. This elite centre-back begins Chelsea’s task of filling the huge void left by the departures of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and possibly Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.0m).

“He brings experience, top defending quality, height, and everything we are looking for to play in a back-three or a back-four. It’s another brilliant signing for us, and we hope Kalidou can show his quality as soon as possible.” – Thomas Tuchel

As head coach Thomas Tuchel suggests, this season could see Chelsea evolve into a back-four team rather than the wing-back system that has brought success to FPL owners of Reece James (£6.0m), Marcos Alonso (£5.5m) and Ben Chilwell (£6.0m).

Like Martinez, Koulibaly is very good with the ball at his feet. The Senegal captain is good at anticipating situations and pulling off interceptions, although gives away a few too many fouls. In attack, he has scored 13 goals over 236 Serie A appearances, at a rate of roughly two per 38 games.

FPL pre-season: £4.5m midfielder Pereira on set plays?
Andreas Pereira (Manchester United to Fulham, £10m)

Over 23% of FPL managers have already committed to Andreas Pereira being their cheap £4.5m midfielder, in the hope that his eye for goal will make him more than the usual two-point appearance machine.

He signed from Manchester United to replace new Liverpool man Fabio Carvalho (£5.5m) and has immediately grabbed set piece duty for the Cottagers.

The Brazilian developed an eye for goal whilst on loan at Flamengo, following past campaigns at Lazio, Valencia and Granada. Seven goals in 31 games made it a productive 12 months for Pereira, which newly-promoted Fulham will need after a frustrating start to the transfer window was worsened by a 5-1 friendly loss to Benfica.

Keane Lewis-Potter (Hull City to Brentford, £20m)

Over recent years, the Championship has been a fertile place for emerging attacking talents ready for Premier League progression. Names like James Maddison (£8.0m), Ollie Watkins (£7.5m), Michael Olise (£5.5m), Eberechi Eze (£5.5m) and James Justin (£4.5m) have made the step up, with Djed Spence (£4.5m) about to do the same.

Brentford have spent £20m on Hull City’s Keane Lewis-Potter (£5.5m) in the hope that he’ll be as successful as their own Ivan Toney (£7.0m) and maybe even Hull’s previous major sale Jarrod Bowen (£8.5m).

Graphic from Transfermarkt

It remains to be seen whether Lewis-Potter gets a bedding-in period or immediately takes the place of either Yoane Wissa (£5.5m) or Bryan Mbeumo (£6.0m). The right-footed attacker prefers dribbling inside from the left flank, suggesting that Wissa is in more danger.

Thomas Strakosha (Lazio to Brentford, free)

Despite losing Christian Eriksen, it’s been a productive summer for Brentford. Both Aaron Hickey (£5.0m) and then Lewis-Potter broke their transfer record, alongside the curious free transfer of Albania goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha (£4.5m).

With David Raya (£4.5m) a key part of Brentford’s inaugural Premier League season, he has been a popular name in early FPL drafts for the upcoming campaign.

Yet now there is competition from Lazio’s number one stopper over the last six years. His 208 appearances in Rome have included two Coppa Italia wins, so it’s hard to see Strakosha arriving at Brentford in his 27-year-old prime to simply be back-up.

Raya’s contract situation and the lack of a senior reserve option perhaps forced Brentford’s arm into recruiting someone of a higher calibre than your typical back-up custodian, so it’ll be interesting to monitor the situation in west London over the rest of pre-season and into the first few Gameweeks.

Nathan Collins (Burnley to Wolverhampton Wanderers, £20.5m)

Wolves have splashed out on centre-back Nathan Collins (£4.5m) to replace the departed Romain Saiss, after the Irish international’s strong run during Ben Mee’s absence in the Burnley team.

“We’re getting someone who is physically very good, very tall, very athletic, and is very comfortable on the ball – he can step in and take the ball forward, which is what we need. He’s very good in both boxes and has real aerial strength. He comes across as expected, a humble young man who is appreciative of the opportunity, so we’re all going to be very happy.” – Wolves’ technical director Scott Sellars

The Clarets kept clean sheets in two matches versus Wolves last season and Collins played both times, impressing Bruno Lage enough to spend big.

According to our Season Ticker, Wolves rank first for fixture difficulty in the opening six Gameweeks.

Collins’ arrival dents the appeal of Max Kilman (£4.5m), especially if Wolves do indeed revert to the four-man defence they operated with in the pre-season win over Alaves, as Conor Coady (£5.0m) and Willy Boly (£4.5m) are also in the running for a starting spot.

Lewis O’Brien and Harry Toffolo (Huddersfield Town to Nottingham Forest, joint-£10m)

Less than two months after defeating Huddersfield Town in the play-off final, Nottingham Forest have taken two of their key players for a combined £10m.

In a busy summer, Harry Toffolo (£4.5m) is their second signing for the left wing-back spot following the capture of Omar Richards (£4.5m). The latter has already suffered a hairline fracture of the leg and will miss the season’s early weeks, suggesting Toffolo begins with the shirt.

Rampaging forward, he netted six times for the Terriers last season and therefore offers an attacking threat, although FPL bosses will still likely prefer the cheaper Neco Williams (£4.0m) on the opposite flank.

In central midfield, Lewis O’Brien (£5.0m) is a promising, progressive player but doesn’t score many – just eight from the last three campaigns. He has a similar style of play to James Garner, who totalled four goals and eight assists during last season’s loan at Forest.

Wayne Hennessey (Burnley to Nottingham Forest, undisclosed)

It’s hard to keep up with all of Forest’s new additions but Wayne Hennessey (£4.0m) is undisputedly arriving as back-up to loanee Dean Henderson (£4.5m) and has been priced accordingly.

Haaland Foden

FPLMarc Newcastle fan that spends far too much time thinking about FPL.

Dalot started 21 of Man utd's last 27 games in all competitions last season

Ten Hag has started Dalot in all 4 matches in pre season so far. Has linked well with Sancho going forward

Attacking RB for a top 6 side.
At 4.5 is he a bargain to start with?

I was hearing they were signing a replacement. If not, he's a decent option with how attacking he is

I dont think new signing will go straight in

Ten hag will start with the players who did well in preseason and keep them in team if playing well

Yes i think so. Only issues are:

      1. The way Ten Hag plays doesn't make me think United will keep many clean sheets initially
      2. If you have 3 premium defenders + Arsenal 4.5, would you even be starting Dalot in your team?

        I have 3 premium defenders + Dalot + Neco.

Playing 4-4-2. Dalot is more exciting option than tomiyasu/white

Tomiyasu has some threat tbh. Arsenal fixtures are better, but yes it's still a toss up.

Will switch to tommy if dalot punt fails.

Since dalot has better attacking threat his price will go up rapidly if he gets a haul early

It’s probably to replace that Arsenal defender. I’d rather go with Dalot than any of that Arsenal back line (unless Zinchenko plays OOP).

All sounds good except the top 6 side bit haha no in all seriousness he is looking like a great option but there are so many good options in defence and Shaw went horribly at the start of last season.

Trent Robbo Cancelo James Trippier Cash Tomiyasu Doherty Perisic maybe.... how do we choose?

Just because shaw failed doesn't mean dalot will be bad option.

And sure those def in isolation are better but Dalot is an enabler for me and gives me a kickass starting 11 😉

I've watched all the preseason games. There's still mistakes in the backline that can ruin a c/s. Lindelof (vs Melbourne), De Gea (vs Palace).

Think keep him on the watch list and wait for the last couple of friendlies.

Ederson for the city double up in defence, Pereira as your cheap mid and as you said Johnson from forest looks an option. How about Martial if Ronaldo doesn’t return?

It’s a big ask to take the bait with ole Tony Martial considering the history and his stroppy French attitude (a bit like every French hopeful in the tour) 😆 but worth a look if he continues to be the spearhead. I can barely believe I’m goin there at present 😮

Surprised about the lack of love for Spurs. Their first team is pretty settled now and they haven't been priced in FPL as Top 3 contenders, even though they are:

    Lloris
    Dier Romero Lenglet
    Doherty* Bentancur Bissouma Perisic
    Kulusevski Kane Son

    Forster
    Tanganga Sanchez Davies
    Spence Skipp Hojbjerg Sessegnon
    Moura Richarlison ?????

We know that Conte wants to get rid of Rodon, Reguilon, Winks, Ndombele, Lo Celso and Gil so the squad is basically there. The only question is over Doherty or Royal as one will probably leave.

Look beyond those two and Lloris.

Dier, Romero and Lenglet 1.5m cheaper than VVD and £1m cheaper than Dias and Laporte.
Perisic and Doherty much cheaper than Cancelo, TAA and Robertson.

Imagine Richarlison RW and Kulu at WB, I honestly think it’s just as good as the Chelsea team Conte won the league with - Son is still underrated by most

There was last season, but haven’t heard anything recently - I find it hard to believe Richarlison is going to be benched most of the time - and he can definitely play RW and has scored goals there

I wonder. My initial thoughts are that Rich will be a utility sub similar to Jota at Liverpool is at times. He can cover any of the front 3 so will come on each game for either Kulu or Son, occasionally maybe even for Kane. Will be hard to predict his role though when CL comes around too.

I think so. I think Ten Hag is putting out pretty strong sides in preseason to try to build up confidence and cohesion. Plus the fact that United don't actually really have anyone else if/when Ronaldo leaves other than Elanga and Eriksen.

Time for Ronaldo to go. Got rid of one stinker in Pogba. Time to get rid of the other one. Not a question of playing ability. Question of ego and attitude and team ethic.

      De Gea
      Dalot Maguire Martinez Shaw
      Fred McTominay
      Sancho Fernandes Rashford
      Martial

It is a shame they have not purchased a DM to take Fred out of the team.

I was looking at fan forums and it seems pretty split about where Bruno will play this season. It seems to depend on Shelvey: If Shelvey starts, Bruno will be more of an 8. If Shelvey doesn't start, Bruno will go into the 6 and Willock/Longstaff will start in the 8 role.

Bruno's position is pretty fluid TBH.
He's in my team as he's incredible value, has great creativity and is amazing at finding space in the box at set pieces.

    Henderson
    TAA, Cancelo, James, Tomi
    Salah, KDB, Martinelli, Neto
    Jesus, Darwin

Have a feeling KDB outscores Haaland over first 8 wks given extra point for goal & clean sheet and assist potential as well as goals. Also Haaland doesn’t seem completely over the niggly injury he carried for most of last season. Given the respective ownership of the two I feel this simple swap provides a differential in an otherwise template team.

    Thoughts?

Personally, I don't think Zinchenko has dropped from Man City's bench to go sit on Arsenal's.
I'd expect him to start most games and I think he'll likely play midfield.

Will Arsenal play a 4-2-3-1 double pivot or more of a Man City style 4-1-2-3? Surely Odegard and Partey start which leaves one mid spot up for grabs between Zinc, Viera, and then the likes of Xhaka and Elneny?

Very hard to know where he'll play... but I can't see him being cover/competition only. If he wanted to sit on the bench most of the time AND play as an attacking wingback, he'd be far better staying at City. He's gone there either to play more often, to play in a position he favours more OR a bit of both.

            Soares Holding Mari Tavares
            Lokonga Smith-Rowe Xhaka

It is a shame we don't know more about the tactics Klopp is going to employ with Nunez. If he is going to be a true central striker then he will score a lot of goals as Liverpool will put chances to him on a plate. He will miss a fair few, but score more than enough.

Basically a player who can come up with something from nowhere. Mane would make those funny runs, or pop-up in the box, or play on the shoulder of the defender. He basically did a lot of different things that made him uncertain for defenders to play against.

No nothing like bobby. Nunez was bought to bring different options to a predictable attack that struggles against deep blocks. He transforms the way they play. Salah wide to stretch backline and isolate full back. Trent coming inside from deep to supply nunez. Thiago supplying from deep left. Robbo overlapping and crossing to nunez. Diaz ghosting inbetween the lines. Possession held a bit deeper enticing opposition out to make space for nunez to run the channels.
                Great alternate option to jota

        TAA, Cancelo, James, xxx, 4.0

        A: Chiwell
B: Dias .. double City look good for CS, but low ceiling?
C: Perisic .. hype, unproven in EPL, good bet or unnecessary bet

I think Chelsea are in trouble. Defence is overhauled and they haven't played a single game together to gel. They don't have a proper finisher (Sterling will bring something, but he isn't clinical) and midfield looks weaker than last season.

I look at Spurs vs Chelsea in FPL and Spurs win hands down to me. So why buy Chelsea when I can buy Spurs (a better team) for cheaper.

That sounds sensible to me about Chelsea. The newcomers will have a short pre-season and they will need time to gel. That settles the decision to double Chelsea.

Choice is to have Dias doubled with Cancelo for best defence, but Spurs have better fixtures. Still time to consider.

If I look at Chelsea, it seems like they want to end up with:

              Mendy
              Kounde* Silva Koulibaly
              James Kante Jorginho Chilwell
              Mount Havertz
              Sterling

Other than Kovacic, the players in the squad are a bit meh. Werner (can't score), Ziyech (can't assist), Pulisic (always injured), Alonso (defensive liability), Gallagher (hasn't shown enough), Barkley (not good enough), RLC (not good enough), CHO (not good enough), Sarr (not good enough), Chalobah (not good enough), Kepa (liability)

It affects the balance too much for my liking

Rest of the team way too flimsy for me

Zincenko is a wait and see, walker too if cucurella signs, dalot should start but utd defense doesn't seem like it'll change much, rashford could be gold but can't rely on him, Bruno G might not be able to keep up the hot streak

Isn't starting today in what seems like the strongest side, but can't read too much into that yet
