FPL Gameweek 1 recap: Haaland’s price rises after first City haul

Having already brought you the statistical summary of Sunday’s Gameweek 1 action, we now turn our attention to the wider Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the day’s fixtures.

WEST HAM UNITED 0-2 MANCHESTER CITY

Erling Haaland (£11.6m) netted his first ever Premier League goals against West Ham United, in a comfortable 2-0 away win for Manchester City.

The big man stepped up to convert a first-half penalty, before he timed his run to perfection to latch onto an excellent ball from Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) for his second.

Despite eyeing a Premier League debut hat-trick, Haaland was withdrawn with 12 minutes remaining, which should ensure he is fit and raring to go for City’s Etihad clash with Bournemouth in Gameweek 2.

Big chances4

Expected goals (xG)1.52

“Haaland gives us his qualities. We are not going to change much, we will adapt, we know we have a threat there. He is an incredible deep runner and finisher. He is adapting perfectly in the way we want to play. We are going to find him more and more and hopefully we can give him the opportunity to score more goals.

“When it was a penalty he immediately took the ball and I like that. The penalty is the guy who has the confidence to do it, is going to do it.” – Pep Guardiola on Erling Haaland’s performance

The Norwegian rose in price overnight and it’s no coincidence that Harry Kane (£11.4m) fell, with many managers making the sideways switch.

De Bruyne, meanwhile, delivered an all-round impressive display, creating three chances and taking two shots.

Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and Kyle Walker’s (£5.0m) inverted roles, which saw them both move into central midfield when City were in possession, meant the Belgian and fellow number eight Ilkay Gundogan (£7.5m) advanced closer to Haaland in the attacking positions.

Above: Man City’s 2-3-4-1 shape in possession, with both full-backs (Walker no2/Cancelo no7) tucking inside to join Rodri in a narrow midfield three

“Sometimes they (the full-backs) play outside it depends on the opponent. I like to have a lot of players in the middle it is like the kitchen in the apartment. We just want to create.” – Pep Guardiola on Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo

Explaining his decision to start Phil Foden (£8.0m) over Riyad Mahrez (£8.0m) on the right wing, Pep Guardiola said:

“Phil trained incredibly well this week. Phil is always fit, in terms of physicality he’s always beyond expectation. Step by step he will be in his best form.” – Pep Guardiola on his decision to start Foden

City had 76 per cent possession, which meant West Ham were left chasing shadows for large periods. As a result, Michail Antonio (£7.5m) was isolated up front and they failed to provide him with much service (their six shots carried a combined xG value of just 0.29), a theme which was also evident in pre-season.

“They were so good. I felt that tactically they completely outdid us today. They played differently than at the end of last season with both full-backs in the middle of the pitch like midfielders. We worked hard to try and replicate what we did in that game. It was a case of trying to stay in the game. It was only 1-0 at half-time with a penalty and it gave us an opportunity and a chance. We’d just started to grow into the game and their quality told. I felt like we had not played well enough so I wanted to try and change the run of the game. We got a little bit more of the ball for about five mins. They were far better than us and we couldn’t cope today.” – David Moyes

West Ham had just one centre-back available for the match, with Craig Dawson (£5.0m), Nayef Aguerd (£5.0m) and Angelo Ogbonna (£4.5m) all injured, while Issa Diop (£4.5m) did not put himself forward for selection.

The Hammers’ injury woes then worsened when Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) was forced off before the half-hour mark after colliding with Haaland and Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m), although Moyes didn’t think it was too serious.

“He got a knock on his hip, which he thinks has numbed his leg completely, so the knock makes me feel not so bad. Hopefully, it won’t be anything serious but he’s limping badly at the moment.” – David Moyes on Lukasz Fabianski

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski (Areola 29); Coufal, Johnson, Zouma, Cresswell; Soucek, Rice; Bowen (Downes 90+2), Lanzini (Benrahma 57), Fornals (Coventry 90+2); Antonio (Scamacca 57)

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Walker, Dias, Ake, Cancelo; Rodri (Phillips 88), De Bruyne (Palmer 88), Gundogan (Bernardo 78); Foden (Mahrez 88), Grealish, Haaland (Alvarez 78)

MANCHESTER UNITED 1-2 BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

Not even the second-half introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m) was enough to save Manchester United, as Erik ten Hag made a losing start in the Old Trafford dugout.

Lining up in a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 formation, Christian Eriksen (£5.5m) was deployed as a false nine in the first-half, an experiment that didn’t work and led to the introduction of Ronaldo after just 53 minutes.

“It was clear to see the second half we were better in the midfield with Eriksen down and Ronaldo up, then we created. It was a pity we didn’t score then. It all takes time, you cannot force it. He is one week in training, a little bit more now. He has to do more to get fit and this game will help him. He will be better next week.” – Erik ten Hag on Cristiano Ronaldo

Elsewhere, Scott McTominay (£5.0m) was deployed higher up the pitch than would normally be the case, while Marcus Rashford’s (£6.5m) position was the most advanced of all United players, as he racked up three shots in the box from his role on the wing.

He was also denied by a point-blank save from Robert Sanchez (£4.5m), something not captured by the stats due to a narrow offside call in the build-up.

“We have two strikers, maybe a third one with Rashford as well, you could see him as a striker. He had a really good pre-season on the left side and also today had two really good chances, coming in from the left side, so I think it was the right decision to do it like this. But we didn’t have the typical nine. He was not available today. If he was available – the striker (Martial) – I would have played him. Cristiano Ronaldo has now, for 10 days, (been) team training, that is too short for 90 minutes. That’s the reason he didn’t start.” – Erik ten Hag

A Brighton and Hove Albion win certainly wasn’t in the script, but tactician Graham Potter masterminded an excellent win for the Seagulls thanks to a Pascal Gross (£5.5m) brace.

The former Ingolstadt 04 midfielder created more chances per 90 minutes than any FPL midfielder bar De Bruyne and Eriksen last season, and may pick up a bit of Fantasy interest ahead of an appealing run of fixtures, which sees Brighton sit top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 2 to 8.

Danny Welbeck (£6.5m), meanwhile, led the line and was a real menace to his former club, with his runs down the channels causing problems for United’s backline throughout.

“It was a great performance and a deserved win. A great way to start. I thought we had an idea of how to attack and when we could we tried to press and put them under pressure. We were positive, brave and the boys gave everything. Our performance in the first-half was really strong.

It’s not easy (losing Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella) because as the transfer fees suggests they were two really key players. In any team you miss good players. We have got a good group, they are ambitious they are not perfect but they give everything and when you’re a coach it gives you a chance.” – Graham Potter

Manchester United XI (4-3-3): de Gea; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Shaw (Malacia 90); Fred (Ronaldo 53), McTominay (van de Beek 78), Fernandes (Garnacho 90); Sancho (Elanga 90), Rashford, Eriksen

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (3-4-2-1): Sanchez; Veltman, Dunk, Webster; Gross, Mac Aallister, Caicedo, Trossard (Lamptey 75); March (Colwill 90+1), Lallana (Mwepu 76); Welbeck (Undav 90+5)

LEICESTER CITY 2-2 BRENTFORD

James Maddison (£8.0m) picked up from where he left off last season with an assist for Leicester City’s opener at the King Power.

Notably, the playmaker has now been directly involved in 14 Premier League goals for the Foxes in 2022 (seven goals and seven FPL assists), only five players have had a hand in more this calendar year.

Elsewhere, Timothy Castagne (£4.5m) and James Justin (£4.5m) were extremely advanced from their wing-back roles, racking up 27 and 17 final-third touches respectively, while £4.0m ‘keeper Danny Ward started in goal.

However, Leicester’s inability to keep clean sheets, plus away trips to Arsenal and Chelsea in the next three, means owners will likely be relying on saves to boost his points tally in the coming weeks.

The 3-5-1-1 formation also allowed Youri Tielemans (£6.5m) plenty of freedom to attack, and he responded by hitting the post, one of four shots he registered on the day.

Above: Youri Tielemans’ touch heatmap v Brentford in Gameweek 1

As for the visitors, Thomas Frank’s substitutions changed the game, with Josh Dasilva (£4.5m) coming on to net the equaliser after 86 minutes.

Brentford had a shot blocked which looped out to the budget midfielder, who then curled a peach of a strike inside the far post.

“I wanted to say something about Josh in the dressing room after the game. I almost got emotional just thinking about it. He’s been out for 18 months; almost a year then a setback and another setback. He had a very good pre-season. The last week he’s looked just that little bit sharper and I knew I wanted to put him on the pitch. In that moment – when he cut in – I just knew it was going to be a goal. I’ve seen that so many times from him. It’s a great moment and a great story.” – Thomas Frank on Josh Dasilva

Last season’s 14-goal top scorer Ivan Toney (£7.0m) was also on the scoresheet via a Rico Henry (£4.5m) assist, and is an intriguing differential given Brentford’s forthcoming fixtures, especially if they can add Mikkel Damsgaard into the mix.

“We stayed in the game and made a few changes at half-time. We wanted to go after them, but then conceded after two minutes. It was another worldie! I don’t know what they feed them here in Leicester! He’s (Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall) scored from 28 yards; a brilliant goal. We changed quickly after that to the 3-4-3 and grew into the game. We looked very fit, we worked very hard and showed the mentality that I know is in this squad. The difference between teams is small, so the mentality that the guys have is the difference. They showed it in abundance at the end – what a way to come back. It’s a deserved point and a fantastic comeback.” – Thomas Frank

Leicester City XI (3-5-1-1): Ward; Fofana, Evans, Amartey; Castagne, Dewsbury-Hall (Daka 73), Ndidi, Tielemans, Justin; Maddison; Vardy

Brentford XI (4-3-3): Raya; Hickey (Bech 84), Jansson, Mee (Lewis-Potter 59), Henry; Norgaard (Baptiste 73), Janelt, Jensen (Dasilva 59); Mbeumo, Wissa (Dervisoglu 84), Toney

Most of the reasons gotten for not picking him is because of bad fixtures? Scored vs Spurs.

LEE, LEI, MUN, CHE, WOL, BRE, AVL, EVE

    are his next 8 fixtures.

    How is this bad?

If I bench Perisic (as planned) my entire starting 11 will be playing at home in GW2, but I guess that's going to be common with City, Pool, Chelsea and Arsenal all playing in their own stadiums.

Full disclosure, I'm on Haaland C, Salah VC at the moment, but I'll reserve the right to waffle a few times this week. My guess is that anytime scorer odds will be in Haaland's favor. We'll see

anyone somewhat impressed with Sterling against Everton? Full 90, played so central, Tuchel potentially sees him as their main goalscorer this season, and even with Chelsea not creating much he still managed to score an offside goal by only a yard or 2 and was unfortunate with a blocked shot from 8 yards that trickled wide

it is an awkward price point; just trying to figure out if Son is worth the 2mil extra over Sterling. Need Sterling to stay close to his City underlying numbers for that to be the case imo, but Everton performance was promising that he's going to be very involved in Chelsea's attacks

agreed, did find it weird Havertz (and even Broja when subbed on) were playing almost LW, leaving the centre for Sterling

hopefully Kovacic/ or frenkie de jong come in and can add more of a creative spark for Chelsea's attackers

chelsea should only get better this season, but it might take some time

to an extent he does, last year (and 19/20) his PPG was far higher than seasons like in 16/17 and 17/18 where he was mainly an assister and raking them in

it's a balancing act, i guess with KDB you just need to be extremely clinical when he does get the chance to shoot(which he normally is tbf)

Very observant regarding KDB. I own him as an alternate to EH/HK and was shocked by his deep positioning today - he practically played as a second striker in preseason, which is why I chose him. I'm hoping for something different next week, but if not I'll have to make a change.

I think il just do Kane-Haaland tonight, not gonna over think it, not gonna shy away frm it either, last couple seasons I played to cautious, and finished outside top 100k.
19/20 finished inside 1k when I was ruthless and didn't hang around..

If I didn't own Haaland, and had an easy route, I'd take it immediately. There are reasons to keep Kane, but more reasons to get Haaland. City were trying to make him GW1 top-goalscorer it seemed. GW3 TC? 😀

Yeah but Kane is a goal/assist machine as well, if Haaland blanks against Bournemouth and Kane scores a brace against Chelsea, then it's flipped. People are so fickle

I just don’t get what’s changed, we knew he would score goals. People completely writing off Kane and Son when they were the best players in the PL for the second half of last season is a bit strange, that’s all

Agreed. I had Kane and Haaland.
Kane going nowhere. He has been consistently smashing it since his first full season. Jesus has made way for Darwin now though.

I think he will score plenty with arsenal.. Iv only one route to Haaland and I'd planned it as to see how Haaland preformed as he hadn't a gd preseason.

    Just something to think about.

Chelsea were not tested vs Everton and struggled at times.

    Spurs are on fire.

I am sitting with Sterling and Mount and realise my mistake. I saw quite a few on here saying they were going to avoid CHE assets the 1st couple of GW's.

CHE may be at home vs Spurs but this is not Everton we are talking about.

Sterling could haul in any game imo. Everton were all about the defence, so it figures that Chelsea weren't tested. Unless you're talking about Chelsea's attack, but in that case... of course they were tested. Only scored one goal. Sterling should do better when the opponent plans to win.

      1. FOO FIGHTER
        • 4 Years

Everton have no striker at this point so that is why Everton were about defence.

Either way, it is not a good sign for CHE at this point.

They could not break Everton down and were not tested defensively.

            Spurs will attack.

Southampton are just as dire as everton imo, and everton had the home advantage/+ you could tell Tuchel had it in the back of his mind he just wanted the 3 points, as Goodison is historically a bad fixture for chelsea, by his comments after the game and the time wasting for 45mins. chelsea didn't care about knocking 3/4 in and looking stylish

See alot of Kane Haaland questions. For me it comes down to the fact that early on you need to stay with the pack, come Saturday I would not be surprised to see Haalands EO at over 100%. So even if he does blank it's not gonna hurt your rank really.

Haaland Is a must at the moment, without him and he goes large you'll suffer ... if he doesn't you won't suffer. No brainer for me

Got super lucky with the Kulu and Haaland pick. Was very close to getting and captaining Kane instead. 50/50 decisions can have such massive impact in this game. 90 points and super awesome start

    Ramsdale
    TAA Cancelo Trippier James
    Salah Martinelli Kulusevski Neto
    Haaland Jesus

Anyone remember Lukaku's first game in a Man United jersey (2017)? He was practically unstoppable, scoring two goals and looking like he could have scored four more. Looked for all the world like he would net 30+ for the campaign.

In 34 appearances that year (33 starts) he ended up with 16 goals and 7 assists. Not bad, though he actually scored 25 in the previous season with Everton.

And the PL isn't the Bundesliga. And not every team they play is going to have a busted back line like West Ham.

He's damn good, miles better than Lukaku without question, but this is still PL football.

I get it but it seems like his detractors keep adding in new things to say why he won't do well. First it was "he can only do it in a farmer's league" and "he won't get chances like that in the PL" or "he can't play against a low block". He makes shows all of these up yesterday and it's "he only scored because West Ham were missing defenders". West Ham defended extremely deep and narrow yesterday and we're doing a very good job of it until Gundogan found Haaland's run into a tiny bit of space and that's all he needed. Then in the second half they still defended very well, City only had 2 shots on target all game remember, and his superb bending run and finish got him his goal. I'm just waiting for him to score against Spurs or Liverpool and people to say something like "he won't play against attacking teams every week".

I had my doubt over time he'd need to gel and get match-fit, and only went for him over Kane in the last hour before deadline. But watching the game, there's no doubt that he's fit and sharp, and the team is very close to reading his movements consistently. Man, he's gonna smash it; my dilemma now is who to captain between him and Salah. If you still hold out on naysaying him, it's you who'll be left behind and hurting.

He looks hungry as hell, too, in addition to being fit and sharp. He's still young and foolish enough to think he's going to conquer the world! Scary.

I thought I'd own KDB and his midfielder points instead of EH/HK and their forward points, but I can see that's probably not going to work out given KDB's meandering play yesterday plus his 0.5 premium price. He suddenly looks like lesser value.

I'm sure we'll hear a lot about Effective Ownership this week from the FFS Pro Pundits on the podcasts. That's when not owning Haaland becomes a problem - if everyone owns and captains, you're probably going to get buried. But if enough stick with Salah every week, maybe you can go without.

BTW - one of the Pro Pundits made noise about going a different direction on Pool, possibly dropping Salah (probably making Darwin his third Pool). That would push Haaland to set and forget captaincy and his EO through the roof.

Whoa, hold the presses! A thoughtful response on the FFS boards! I do appreciate it, particularly your game analysis of yesterday's action - thanks. No sarcasm.

Your previous comment about Lukaku's fast start last year - I had forgotten that, as well as the hype around his return to the PL as a "remade player" ready to tear up the league. That guy is right up there on my list of all-time least favorite players. And yet, the physical attributes, the words used to describe him - big, fast, strong, quick, explosive - are the same ones used to describe Haaland. Add in two opening day goals and now I'm remembering the last time a Beast Mode (that phrase was probably last popular when Lukaku went to Man United) player arrived on the scene and everyone went nuts.

I discovered Haaland when he was an enabler (!) for my Fantasy Champions League team a few years ago. I think he was 4.5/5.5 or some such - totally nuts. I felt pretty smart when he went off - truth is I didn't really know who he was.

I wasn't trying to dismiss him, but I was saying, "let's see more" before declaring him the greatest goal scorer/footballer of all time, which is basically where the hype meter is right now. Not rooting against him - just pushing back against the noise a bit.

It does appear, however, that his talent could make him the Tiger Woods of World football - Transformative. Cheers.

That's fair, didn't mean to lump you in with others, apologies if I did or had the assumption you were one of a few on these boards that seemed to want to put him down at any point (who shockingly I didn't see around yesterday and haven't seen since either). No harm in being sceptical or waiting and seeing I agree, I just think he was always going to fit in well here. I'm sure there will be games too where things might not work just yet while chemistry is still building and maybe a false 9 will be needed, but him doing what he did yesterday against a very compact team makes me think that those occasions will be few and far between.

I totally understand people going Kane -> Haaland

But some on FPL need to get out of their heads that Kane is a poor asset because he's now playing too deep and is trying to be creative. That's EXACTLY what he did last season, and after being Florida man for a month and a bit, he was one of the best assets in the game.

Don't try to over-justify not owning him beyond MCI-BOU

The old members area allows it in theory for 2-way comparisons, but it's screwing things up, and there's no touchmap for this season anyway. The average position this week was maybe a little deeper than last seasons entire average, but the were plenty of games in the last half of the season in which his average position was deeper. Best I can do with these shite tools.

Touch map finally loaded for this GW in the new members area. Looks like he covered all the same areas as last season.

Of course, last season he covered all those area while at times scoring lots of points, and other times, blanking for almost half a season 😀

you're right, i just think Haaland will be a more reliable captain option, for next week and for future weeks, watching kane yesterday, constantly dropping deep while Son & Kulu bombed forward was painful

I checked the heat maps and there wasn't a great deal in it. That often happened last season too and didn't hold Kane back to much.

yeah but i'm comparing him to Haaland who has the pace to constantly lead the line, unlike Kane who drops back to create space for others, a heat map only tells you where he was not what he was doing while there, Son & Kulu had the most dangerous moments by far

Bit disappointed Pep didn’t leave Haaland on earlier to give him a chance of a debut prem hat trick

I'm a bit disappointed he brought in MAHREZ for 2 minutes meaning I didn't get the bench points for Mitrovic ...

Wondered if that wasn't a test to see how he'd react. He looked a little disappointed but I think his overall reaction was to Pep's satisfaction.

Much rather be sure he's fit and improving his fitness in general than risk the extra 10/15 mins
